Jacob Denney Has Found The Pace

Published in Racing
Saturday, 19 April 2025 08:15

SAPULPA, Okla. Jacob Denney was like many aspiring dirt midget drivers, dreaming that legendary car owner Keith Kunz would one day call with an offer to drive for his team.

The difference is his phone rang.

Five months since answering, the Ohioan has already found his pace with the Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports team after capturing his first career Xtreme Outlaw Midget Series presented by Toyota feature win at the season-opening World of Outlaws Illini 100.

I was super pumped in the moment, and it was a dream come true, really, Denney said. Im really happy to be where Im at in this stage with them. Kaleb (Wyrick) has been giving me a great car every night, so everyone helping around me has really been a blessing. I cant thank Keith (Kunz), Pete (Willoughby), Toyota, and JBL enough for really taking a chance with me and allowing me to drive their car.

Denney built his name on the national midget stage with Malloy Motorsports in 2023 and 2024, picking up six combined feature wins between USAC and POWRi. Denney finished seventh and fifth in the USAC National standings both years.

He made his first start for KKM at the 2024 Xtreme Outlaw Midget Series finale at Jacksonville Speedway in a No. 68 LynK Chassis, finishing seventh the first night and 11th in the finale. Then, he made three additional starts for KKM at the POWRi finale, picking up his first win with the team, before he was officially announced to take over the JBL Toyota from Ryan Timms.

The first night of Creek County for the POWRi opener, I was so comfortable, Denney said. I wasnt really phased; I just went in and found my limit. But from the first lap, Ive been super comfortable. It takes a lot to be fast, so finding it comfortable really helps. (At Farmer City) it helps in times where its treacherous but finding that trust in yourself and running up to the wall makes it rewarding.

Most tracks on the 2025 Xtreme Outlaw Midgets schedule are facilities the Galloway, Ohio, driver has never visited. The upcoming swing of races in Oklahoma and Kansas will see his first visits to Humboldt Speedway (Friday, May 9) and 81 Speedway (Saturday, May 10), respectively.

Denney is not worried by the lack of experience, as the Illini 100 win at Farmer City marked the first time he raced at the quarter-mile bullring.

I mean, you have to feel prepared, or cant be confident when something new is next, Denney said. I mean, it was my first night at (Farmer City) and we did just fine, so you just gotta dive into it. (The tracks) are all kind of the same, they all have their little tricks and things that make you faster at every place, so as long as there is confidence going into it and we do our normal thing, we can keep things going.

As he chases his first national midget title with the Xtreme Outlaw Midgets in 2025, Denney is blocking out any unneeded thoughts that might distract him from competing in the best racing opportunity hes earned.

I dont think theres been so much pressure, Denney said. You just gotta go in and do your job. You dont know whats gonna happen, so thinking about it or adding pressure when nothings happened doesnt help you at all. Racings all about confidence, so you gotta be confident in yourself, your car, trust yourself, and things will all work out.

Lightning's Bjorkstrand out for series vs. Panthers

Published in Hockey
Saturday, 19 April 2025 11:25

Tampa Bay Lightning forward Oliver Bjorkstrand will not play in the team's Eastern Conference first-round series against the Florida Panthers, coach Jon Cooper announced Saturday.

Bjorkstrand is considered week-to-week with a lower-body injury that he sustained during Tampa Bay's 4-3 overtime loss to the Detroit Red Wings on April 11.

Bjorkstrand, 30, has nine points (five goals, four assists) in 18 games with the Lightning since the club acquired him from the Seattle Kraken before the NHL trade deadline. He recorded 37 points (16 goals, 21 assists) in 61 games with the Kraken in 2024-25.

A third-round pick by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2013 NHL draft, Bjorkstrand has totaled 384 points (172 goals, 212 assists) in 624 career games with the Blue Jackets, Kraken and Lightning.

Stars' Heiskanen skates, out for Game 1 vs. Avs

Published in Hockey
Saturday, 19 April 2025 11:03

Dallas Stars defenseman Miro Heiskanen participated in the morning skate on Saturday but will not play in Game 1 of Western Conference first-round series against the visiting Colorado Avalanche.

Stars coach Pete DeBoer said Heiskanen is taking a step in the right direction as he looks to turn the corner following knee surgery. Heiskanen, who wore a noncontact jersey on Saturday, is labeled day-to-day by DeBoer.

"Definitely a step in the right direction from where we've been in the last 2 months," DeBoer said.

DeBoer said the next step is for Heiskanen to participate in a full-contact practice session.

Heiskanen, 25, has been sidelined since Jan. 28 after his left knee was injured in a collision with Vegas Golden Knights forward Mark Stone.

Heiskanen has 25 points (five goals, 20 assists) in 50 games this season while logging a team-best 25:10 of ice time per game.

Since being selected by Dallas with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2017 NHL draft, Heiskanen has recorded 283 points (58 goals, 225 assists) in 475 career games over seven seasons.

The 2024-25 NHL season is officially in the rearview mirror. Sixteen of the league's teams have made the postseason bracket, and 16 have been eliminated.

Before the first-round series begins, ESPN's experts have identified their picks for each matchup, along with the team that will win the Stanley Cup in June and the player who will win the Conn Smythe Trophy (playoff MVP).

I fully admit that most of my 2024-25 NHL preseason predictions were a waste of pixels: a collection of bad calls, faulty logic and the bold prediction that the Buffalo Sabres would make the playoffs -- which should qualify me for some sort of cognitive examination.

But I got something right: The two teams I predicted would battle in the Stanley Cup Final are part of the 2025 NHL postseason bracket. However, after 82 games of data, results and analysis, I've decided to punt on one of those picks while remaining ride-or-die on the other one -- most likely to my detriment, given their current predicament.

Here is how the Stanley Cup playoffs will play out, from the opening round through the last game of the Final. I apologize in advance for spoiling the next two months for you, as obviously all of this is going to happen exactly to script and none of these picks will be incorrect.

Let's all enjoy the best postseason in sports together, no matter how it goes.
