Kane helps Bayern extend record UCL win streak

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 24 October 2023 12:52

Bayern Munich soaked up intense pressure from Galatasaray for more than 70 minutes before striking twice to carve out a 3-1 victory on Tuesday that kept them firmly top of their Champions League Group A.

With the victory, Bayern extended their record win streak in the Champions League group stage to 16 games. The German champions have also gone a record 37 games unbeaten in the group stage.

The Bavarians top their group on nine points, with Galatasaray in second on four.

Bayern unusually found themselves on the back foot as Galatasaray carved out 20 attacks to their six with the two sides locked at 1-1 after goals in the opening half hour.

However, Bayern striker Harry Kane scored in the 73rd minute and Jamal Musiala added another six minutes later to snap their opponents' 23-match unbeaten run across all competitions.

The Turks, brimming with confidence from their win at Manchester United in the previous matchday, showed no signs of nerves against their more illustrious opponents and had a chance with Mauro Icardi after four minutes.

The visitors silenced the fiery home crowd with Kingsley Coman rifling in for the lead in the eighth minute. Goalkeeper Sven Ulreich, however, had to come to the rescue only a minute later, spectacularly palming a Kerem Aktürkoglu shot wide.

In a frantic first half, Akturkoglu then missed a golden chance to level when Ulreich cleared a cutback into his path but the 25-year-old fired over the bar with the keeper beaten.

The hosts' pressure, however, paid off in the 30th when Icardi was brought down in the box. The Argentine coolly chipped his Panenka-style penalty into the middle of the goal as Ulreich dived to the side.

In an equally pacy start to the second half, Galatasaray had the lion's share of chances once more with Bayern defending desperately.

The hosts, however, started running out of steam after failing to score again and Bayern grew in confidence, with Kane attempting to flick in with a backheel before slotting in on the rebound in the 73rd.

That goal unlocked the game for Bayern, who were missing several players through injury, and they added another with Musiala to seal their hard-earned win.

Manchester United face FC Copenhagen in the other group game later.

South Africa 382 for 5 (De Kock 174, Klaasen 90, Markram 60) beat Bangladesh 233 (Mahmudullah 111, Jansen 2-39, Rabada 2-42) by 149 runs

South Africa continue to bludgeon all before their path when they bat first, and it doesn't seem to matter who's in the way. This time, it was Bangladesh who were the unfortunate victims, with South Africa putting them to the sword in a 149-run demolition. It was led by an enormous contribution from Quinton de Kock, whose 140-ball 174 powered South Africa to 382. At the death, to help him along, he had Heinrich Klaasen, who smashed 90 off 49 balls as South Africa racked up 144 in the final 10 overs. Bangladesh were never in the chase in response and, as with every other game of South Africa's in this tournament, all five bowlers chipped in with wickets.

South Africa opted to bat first and to begin things weren't as straightforward as the final scorecard might suggest. Bangladesh kept a lid on de Kock and Reeza Hendricks initially, and drew early blood when Shoriful Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz got rid of Hendricks and Rassie van der Dussen cheaply. By the end of the eighth over, South Africa were wobbling mildly at 36 for 2, and there was little sign this pitch would be conducive to the runfest that followed.

But Aiden Markram and de Kock are arguably the two most in-form batters this tournament and, together, they began to gradually shut Bangladesh out of the contest. The spinners were milked down the ground as Bangladesh's ability - and appetite - for wicket-taking receded. The holding pattern benefitted South Africa, given their power lower down the order, and soon enough, the boundaries began to flow. The hundred came up in the 21th over, the 100-partnership in the 26th. By now de Kock was closing in on his own hundred, while Markram had brought up a half-century.

Even the wicket of Markram - he eventually fell when he mistimed an inside-out aerial drive off Shakib - seemed to benefit South Africa. Klaasen came on at the perfect time - with 20 overs to go, he enough time to bed in before the planned carnage at the death - and a good enough platform in place. A pulled six off Shakib off his fourth ball made his intentions plain, before de Kock brought up his third hundred this World Cup.

South Africa were getting as many runs as they wanted by this stage, with the game played entirely on their terms. But the trademark brutality they demonstrated against England wasn't yet in evidence; and by the end of the 37st over, they had only just brought up the 200. What followed after that, though, was a repeat dose of what England had suffered at this venue three days earlier.

A powered six and a four from Klaasen off Hasan Mahmud signalled South Africa's gear shift into sport mode, before de Kock cranked it up to 11 in an onslaught against the Bangladesh captain. Smashing two fours and two sixes in that Shakib over that went for 22, de Kock brought up his 150, and a further 17 from the following saw South Africa speed to 300. De Kock would be denied his own double-hundred though, holing out for 174 to deep backward point, but in Miller, they had the perfect man coming in yet again.

As Bangladesh were blown away by the flurry of fours and sixes they found themselves being peppered for, they swiftly ran out of ideas, seemingly going through the motions and looking to bring the innings to an end. The last five overs had 73 runs scored, and though Klaasen was denied another brilliant hundred, he had ensured the target was well beyond Bangladesh.

Bangladesh's chase never really got going. The intent up top wasn't evocative of a side that needed to hunt down such a huge total, and the quality of South Africa's fast bowling straitjacketed them anyway. A couple of boundaries off Lizaad Williams in the sixth over was the first sign of acceleration, but it was put down swiftly by back-to-back wickets for Marco Jansen in the next, with Tanzid Hassan and Najmal Shanto both squeezed down leg to the wicketkeeper.

Shakib has been short of runs this tournament, and it was a trend that continued. He poked at one from Williams that Klaasen, keeping in place of a cramped-up de Kock, grabbed onto with aplomb to leave Bangladesh reeling at 31 for 3.

South Africa have shared the wickets among their bowlers all tournament, and now it was Gerald Coetzee's turn as Mushfiqur Rahim carved one straight down deep third's throat. Rabada would then get into the act as he trapped Litton Das in front, and Keshav Maharaj removed Mehidy as Bangladesh stumbled to 81 for 6.

The game might have ended with a record defeat but for a stirring effort from Mahmudullah. Initially not even picked in Bangladesh's World Cup squad, he was the only batter who showed any degree of comfort against this South Africa attack. He had the confidence to take on Jansen, both with the bat and his attitude, giving as good as he received when the man a foot taller than him offered him a verbal spray.
South Africa have had some trouble disposing off the tail this tournament, and it's one of the few things they might reflect upon again. As with England and Netherlands, the Bangladesh lower order kept chipping away, with Mahmudullah closing in on his hundred as sloppiness seeped into the bowling and fielding. Mahmudullah farmed the strike expertly, and would get to his third World Cup hundred with a nudge into the onside.
But that fightback was simply a distraction from a game that South Africa had utterly, completely, dominated. Coetzee eventually got Mahmdullah with a full, wide ball, and soon after Williams would deliver the finishing blow as Bangladesh ultimately fell for 233, propelling South Africa to second place on the points table, and sinking Bangladesh to the bottom.

Titans may play both Levis, Willis if Tannehill out

Published in Breaking News
Tuesday, 24 October 2023 12:54

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Titans may use two quarterbacks Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons if Ryan Tannehill can't play, coach Mike Vrabel said Tuesday.

Both Malik Willis and rookie Will Levis could see snaps if Tannehill isn't available because of his high ankle sprain.

"If Ryan can't play, I would anticipate both of those quarterbacks playing in a football game," Vrabel said.

Tannehill suffered a right high ankle sprain in the Titans' 24-16 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 6. The injury is similar to the initial ankle sprain Tannehill had last season that kept him out for two games. A second injury to the same ankle required surgery and landed Tannehill on injured reserve, ending his season.

Vrabel said Tannehill is no longer using the walking device but won't be available to practice for Tennessee as the team began practice on Tuesday after the bye week. The Titans' plan to monitor Tannehill's progress and see where he is at the end of the week.

Tannehill was off his feet during the bye while Willis and Levis went through throwing sessions at the facility with wide receiver Treylon Burks. Burks missed the last three games with a knee injury but will practice this week.

The reps in practice will be divided between the two young quarterbacks when Tannehill is out. Tennessee traded up in the third round to select Willis in the 2022 draft. The Titans doubled down on young quarterbacks when they traded up to the No. 33 pick this year to select Levis.

"I'm confident in both and sure they're excited to get the opportunity to showcase themselves, get some practice reps, play some ball, and get ready to win," running back Derrick Henry said of Willis and Levis.

On Monday, the Titans traded safety Kevin Byard to the Philadelphia Eagles for a fifth and sixth-round pick in next year's draft along with veteran safety Terrell Edmunds. Vrabel fielded a series of questions Tuesday about trading one of the team's captains before being asked about trading any other players.

"[General manager] Ran [Carthon] and I will always look at opportunities to strengthen the roster," Vrabel said. "We'll always listen to something someone has to say but I don't think anything is imminent."

Henry is one of the remaining Titans players with trade value.

"Until I'm told different, I'm focused on winning, beating the Falcons," Henry said. "I'm here at work, ready to go practice."

NHL reverses new ban on Pride tape in warmups

Published in Breaking News
Tuesday, 24 October 2023 12:55

The NHL has reversed its policy on the use of colored stick tape to represent causes during games and in practices.

"After consultation with the NHL Players' Association and the NHL Player Inclusion Coalition, players will now have the option to voluntarily represent social causes with their stick tape throughout the season," the league said in a statement Tuesday.

The NHL announced in June that teams were no longer allowed to wear "specialty" jerseys during warmups, practices or games during nights that supported causes like Pride or military appreciation. The league further clarified that on-ice player uniforms and gear worn in warmups, official team practices and games could not be altered to reflect "specialty" theme nights.

That included the use of Pride tape, a rainbow-colored stick tape that's been used in support of the LGBTQIA+ community for several seasons. The league told ESPN that the ban on Pride tape was to prevent teams and players from using it as an "end-around" to violate the new uniform policy.

The Pride tape ban made international news and compelled NHL players, including reigning MVP Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers, to openly question the policy.

"I've expressed disappointment in not being able to wear the various jersey or the tapes ... whether that's Pride tape or pink tape," McDavid said. "Is it something that I'd like to see back into place one day? Certainly."

On Saturday, Arizona Coyotes defenseman Travis Dermott became the first NHL player to use Pride tape on his stick in defiance of the NHL's ban, wrapping the top of his stick with the tape.

"It's not like I'm shutting up and going away," he told PHNX. "I know more questions are going to be coming. We're just going to be as prepared as we can be to just spread love. That's the thing. It's gay pride that we're talking about, but it could be men's health. It could be any war. It's just wanting world peace. Everyone's got to love each other a little bit more."

The NHL, NHLPA and the NHL player inclusion coalition met early last week about the Pride Tape issue following the outrage about the ban. There was another meeting involving the coalition on Monday. On Tuesday, word began to spread around the NHL that the policy was changing.

The reversal of the policy was met with a positive response from many fans and advocacy organizations.

"I'm a big believer in freedom of choice. While I might have been disappointed, I didn't criticize any players for not wearing a [Pride] jersey, because that's their right to choose. I think it should be a player's right to use the tape they want to, that's been sanctioned by the NHL for years. For me, this is a big win for freedom of choice," said Brock McGillis, a former pro hockey player and a founder of the Alphabet Sports Collective. "That said, we need to get back to a point where we're focused on informed decision making and recognizing impact."

The unilateral ban on "specialty jerseys," approved by the NHL board of governors with no objection from the NHLPA, came after several players refused to take part in warmups when their teams wore Pride Night jerseys, citing personal or religious objections.

Defenseman Ivan Provorov, then of the Philadelphia Flyers, was the first player to opt out in January, citing his Russian Orthodox religion. Because of these objections, individual teams, including the New York Rangers, Minnesota Wild and Chicago Blackhawks, decided not to have any players wear Pride jerseys in warmups.

The ban on "specialty" jerseys goes beyond Pride nights to include those supporting causes such as Hockey Fights Cancer and jerseys commemorating Black and Latino heritage months and military appreciation.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said that the league's new policy has been "terribly misunderstood and mis-portrayed" and that the NHL still encourages "specialty nights where groups of all different types are honored and consciousness is raised."

The NHL also donates funds to groups involved in the specialty nights.

"What happened last year was that the issue of who wanted to wear a particular uniform on a particular night overshadowed everything that our clubs were doing. So what we said, instead of having that distraction and having our players have to decide whether or not they wanted to do something or not do something and be singled out, we said, 'Let's not touch that,'" Bettman told ESPN Radio's "UnSportsmanLike" in October.

The makers of Pride Tape were "extremely disappointed" that the ban extended to colored stick tape. Like the game-worn theme night jerseys, NHL players' sticks wrapped with Pride tape were auctioned off by teams to raise money for charity. Depending on the player, a game-worn autographed jersey could fetch well over $1,500.

"The league has used language in recent days that would prohibit the tape from any proximity to NHL hockey. We hope the league -- and teams -- will again show commitment to this important symbol of combating homophobia," Pride Tape said in a statement.

The league also saw one of its major sponsorship partners make a statement about Pride tape.

Canadian-based Scotiabank announced it was giving away 5,000 rolls of Pride Tape at branches across Canada to fans and players "who want to show their support for Pride and making hockey more inclusive."

Jeff McLean, a co-founder of Pride Tape, said he was told the Scotiabank promotion came together "rather quickly" and that "while it wasn't related to Travis [Dermott], it was related to the ban."

The NHL risked being an outlier in the hockey world with its ban on pride tape.

The AHL, ECHL, NCAA and the CHL, which is the major junior umbrella for the OHL, QMJHL and WHL, all told ESPN that their respective entities had no bans on Pride tape or specialty sweaters.

A CHL spokesperson said last week that the WHL's Victoria Royals were hosting a "Hockey Is For Everyone" Night and that the Royals were slated to use Pride tape.

An ECHL spokesperson said that players could "utilize their preference of tape color" as long as the tape was from the league's exclusive partner, Howies Hockey Tape. While Howies Hockey Tape does not have Pride tape, its website shows the supplier does have multiple colors that could be used to create a version of homemade Pride tape. The ECHL spokesperson also said that the league would be willing to discuss alternative options with players who felt uncomfortable participating in "certain theme-night activations" only to then state that "no player has ever come to the League with a request to not participate."

While the NCAA had no specific bans, a spokesperson told ESPN that it is up to each individual conference and its member schools to determine if they want to host specialty nights.

Division I collegiate conferences such as the Atlantic Hockey, College Hockey America, ECAC, Hockey East and the WCHA each stated they had not placed any restrictions on their teams from hosting specialty nights, wearing specialty sweaters or using Pride tape in any arenas.

"The league actively encourages and works with its teams to utilize these events to engage with their communities both on and off campus," Hockey East said in a statement to ESPN. "Some teams, including Northeastern's men's and women's programs, have already enjoyed successful Pride Nights in the early parts of this season and we're looking forward to celebrating such events at other schools as the year goes on."

Rams release Maher after 3 missed kicks in loss

Published in Breaking News
Tuesday, 24 October 2023 12:55

LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Rams released Brett Maher on Tuesday, two days after the veteran kicker missed three crucial kicks in a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Rams are planning to sign former Indianapolis Colts kicker Lucas Havrisik off the Cleveland Browns' practice squad, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Maher missed field goal attempts of 53 and 51 yards and an extra point in Sunday's 24-17 home loss to the Steelers. He has made 73.9% of his field goals this season.

Maher said after the game that he "could have made a very positive impact on that game" but that he didn't do his part.

"Felt like I couldn't find it today," Maher said Sunday.

Rams coach Sean McVay said after the game that the team would "look at it and we'll see," and added Monday that he would talk with general manager Les Snead and that moving on from Maher is something the Rams "could possibly look into."

"He's got to be better," McVay said Sunday. "That's seven points that we missed out on that were key and critical for the momentum of the game and the type of game that it was"

The Rams signed Maher last offseason to replace Matt Gay, who signed a four-year, $22.5 million contract with the Colts during free agency.

Pistons' Bogdanovic (calf) out at least 4 weeks

Published in Basketball
Tuesday, 24 October 2023 13:18

Detroit Pistons forward Bojan Bogdanovic has a strained right calf and will start the season on the sideline.

The team announced Tuesday that Bogdanovic will be re-evaluated in four weeks.

He is only one of three Pistons who will miss Wednesday's season opener at the Miami Heat -- and beyond.

Guard Monte Morris, who had been hampered by a sore lower back, strained his right quad recently during a rehabilitation session. Doctors will re-evaluate his condition in three weeks.

Isaiah Livers, sidelined by a Grade 3 left ankle sprain, is "making progress" toward resuming basketball activities and will be re-evaluated in four weeks, the Pistons said.

Bogdanovic, 34, averaged a career-high 21.6 points along with 3.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists over 59 games last season, his first with the Pistons.

Morris, 28, played in 62 games with the Washington Wizards in 2022-23 and averaged 10.3 points, 3.4 rebounds and 5.3 assists.

Livers, a 25-year-old forward, appeared in 52 games and averaged 6.7 points and 2.8 rebounds.

The Pistons finished last season with an NBA-worst 17-65 record.

Wembanyama aiming to play 'every single game'

Published in Basketball
Tuesday, 24 October 2023 13:18

SAN ANTONIO -- The San Antonio Spurs have already been cautious with Victor Wembanyama so far.

In summer league, the 7-foot-4 rookie sensation only played in two games as he was coming off a full season in the French league, including a run to the finals. In the preseason, he -- like other Spurs' key players -- skipped one game.

But when it comes to the regular season, Wembanyama wants to make sure he's as available as he can be.

"Every game. If there's no excessive risk for my health -- of course I can't predict the future -- but I want to play every single game," Wembanyama said on Tuesday.

The Spurs have kept their plan for Wembanyama under wraps as much as possible so it is unclear when and if he will rest any games, especially as the league continues its crack down on load management with the new Player Participation Policy.

As Wembanyama said, injuries are a part of the game but he made it clear he wants to play if healthy.

His comments come on the eve of his NBA regular season debut. The Spurs are hosting the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night on ESPN.

This is Wembanyama's third NBA "debut" so far. There was his summer league opener in Las Vegas and then his preseason debut in Oklahoma City. But the next one is the one that counts in the standings. And Wembanyama said it doesn't feel like the others.

"This one feels unreal even more," Wembanyama said. "I thought maybe a month ago that some preseason games would prepare me for that moment, and it would be just another game. But it feels totally different. The fact it's an actual NBA regular season game. It's different."

Wembanyama said that he's also ready for the physicality he expects from teams that will try to push him around on both ends of the floor.

"Everyone has their strength and being physical [with me] is something I've seen my whole life basically every time I stepped on a court for the last few years," Wembanyama said. "It's not something I'm afraid of.

"Quickness beats physicality when used correctly. It's really part of the game. I'm used to it."

Wembanyama excelled on both ends in the preseason. In four games, he averaged 19.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.8 blocks in just 20.9 minutes per game on .509/.318/.857 shooting splits.

Defensively, Wembanyama will be tasked with helping to improve what was the league's worst defense a season ago, one that allowed 119.6 points per 100 possessions.

Reserve forward Cedi Osman said having Wembanyama "blocking everything" certainly helps the defense but it will also help to have 6-foot-8 power forward-turned-point guard Jeremy Sochan as the point of attack defender as well.

"I think that first unit, the last two games have been doing a great job and they are the ones that set the tone," Osman said on Monday afternoon.

Osman also has been one of the Spurs who has gone up against Wembanyama the most at practice. Despite their height difference -- Osman, listed at 6-foot-7 going against the 7-foot-4 (and possibly taller) Wembanyama -- the veteran has been trying to use his weight to push the rookie around some.

"A lot of players will try and go at him," Osman explained, "and I think that he's really physically and mentally ready for that moment. He's really excited and we're really excited for him."

Sources: Melvin leaves Padres to manage Giants

Published in Baseball
Tuesday, 24 October 2023 13:22

Bob Melvin will leave the San Diego Padres to become the manager of the San Francisco Giants, sources have confirmed to ESPN.

San Diego granted Melvin permission to interview with the division rival Giants earlier this week, paving the way for the end of a contentious two-year relationship between the Padres and the three-time Manager of the Year.

The Padres said earlier this month that they intended to retain Melvin and general manager A.J. Preller, even after going just 82-80 en route a third-place finish in the National League West.

Melvin managed the Padres for two seasons, reaching the 2022 NL Championship Series but then missing the playoffs this season with a $258 million payroll, the third-highest in the majors. He will replace Gabe Kapler with the Giants, who went 79-83 this season.

The Giants' plan to hire Melvin was first reported Tuesday by The Athletic. He is expected to be introduced as Giants manager as early s Tuesday night, according to multiple reports.

Melvin will be returning to the Bay Area where he grew up, played for the Giants and then managed the Oakland Athletics from 2011-21. He went 171-153 with the Padres and will enter his 21st season as a manager next year with a career record of 1,517-1,425 in stints with Arizona, Seattle, Oakland and San Diego.

Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi had hoped to find a new manager by the start of free agency to replace Kapler, who was fired after going 295-248 over three-plus seasons and leading San Francisco to a franchise-record 107 wins in 2021.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against her four-year doping ban.

An independent tribunal determined the Romanian, 32, had committed "intentional" anti-doping violations.

Halep said at the time she would "do everything in my power to clear my name of these false allegations".

The former world number one has been suspended since 7 October 2022 after testing positive for Roxadustat.

"In her appeal to the CAS, the athlete requests that the challenged decision be set aside and that her sanction be reduced," a statement from the Swiss court read.

If her ban is upheld she will be able to play again on 7 October 2026, by which time she will be 35.

Cas, sport's highest court, said the matter will be decided by a panel of arbitrators after a hearing and it was not yet possible to indicate a time frame for the decision.

Former world number one Halep tested positive for the use of Roxadustat at last year's US Open, and was also found guilty of using an unspecified prohibited substance or method in 2022 after irregularities were found in her biological passport.

The tribunal accepted Halep's argument she had taken a contaminated supplement, but decided that would not have resulted in the concentration of Roxadustat found in her urine sample.

Roxadustat is an anti-anaemia drug which stimulates the production of red blood cells in the body.

"I take the rules that govern our sport very seriously and take pride in the fact I have never knowingly or intentionally used any prohibited substance," Halep said in September.

"I refused to accept their decision of a four-year ban."

Halep, who won the French Open in 2018 and Wimbledon the following year, is the highest-profile tennis player to fail a drugs test since Maria Sharapova in 2016.

She has won 24 WTA tour singles titles and earned 32.2m in prize money and was ranked number one in the world in 2017 and 2018.
