Juve beat 10-man Milan as 4 U.S. players start

Manuel Locatelli secured a 1-0 win for Juventus at AC Milan in Serie A on Sunday with a second-half strike, after the hosts were reduced to 10 men when defender Malick Thiaw received a direct red card.

It was a must-see game for fans of the United States as star national team players Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah started for Milan and Timothy Weah and Weston McKennie were in the XI for Juventus.

A relatively slow-paced match took a surprising turn five minutes before the break when Thiaw received his marching orders for a last-man foul on Moise Kean.

With the numerical advantage, Juve took charge and Locatelli scored in the 63rd minute with a deflected long-range shot off Rade Krunic, catching Milan keeper Antonio Mirante off guard.

Juve are now third in the table with 20 points, with Milan second on 21 points, one point behind leaders Inter Milan after the ninth round.

Milan needed to win to reclaim the Serie A summit after Inter's 3-0 victory against Torino on Saturday. However, they were without several key players, including their first-choice keeper, Mike Maignan, and defender Theo Hernandez, both of whom were suspended for the match.

The first opportunity went to Milan and Olivier Giroud, but he was denied by a reaction save from Juve keeper Wojciech Szczesny after firing a low shot towards the post from a short distance.

Shortly after Thiaw's red card, Moise Kean had an opportunity to give Juve the lead with a tap-in at the post, but he pushed it wide.

Thiaw's red card was the first such incident during the first half of a Serie A match between Juve and Milan in more than 25 years, dating back to Milan midfielder Zvonimir Boban.

Despite letting in the goal, Mirante showed his class in the final moments of the match, first denying Dusan Vlahovic and then making a remarkable double save during stoppage time.

Juve manager Massimiliano Allegri was visibly frustrated towards the end of the match, appearing unhappy with his players. The 56-year-old removed his jacket and tie and stormed off the pitch, which resulted in him receiving a yellow card.

Juve manager Massimiliano Allegri said his team could have handled the numerical advantage better.

"Once we were against 10 men, we did not start the second half well. In the final minutes, we lacked patience and kept allowing Milan counter-attacks," he told DAZN.

"If we are just content with the victory, then we will get nowhere. We need to build on this and improve where we are getting these things wrong."

Messi 'proud' of first season at Inter Miami

Lionel Messi said he is "proud" of his team's accomplishments during his first season at Inter Miami despite them missing out on the MLS playoffs.

Inter Miami ended the campaign with a 1-0 loss at Charlotte FC on Saturday, with Messi playing the entire game.

"I am proud of everything the team accomplished this season," Messi said in a post on Instagram.

"With everyone's work and effort, we were able to win the Leagues Cup, achieving the first title in the history of Inter Miami CF, we reached the final of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and we were even fighting to get into the MLS playoffs practically until the last moment.

"We are left with all the good things and above all with the desire to improve to be even more competitive next year. I would like to thank all the people at the club and the city of Miami for the support they always give us. I am sure that we will continue to live incredible moments together as has happened in recent months."

Messi, 36, finished with 11 goals in 14 matches with Inter Miami this season. The team went 8-2-4 in those games; seven of those matches were on the team's run to win its first-ever trophy, the Leagues Cup. The Argentina captain also appeared in five MLS games, starting three times and scoring one goal.

Messi played in one U.S. Open Cup semifinal, but a hamstring injury derailed his season and essentially ended Inter Miami's chances of making the postseason.

Miami went 1-3-3 in seven matches without Messi after he joined the club. He was able to play as a substitute on Oct. 7 against FC Cincinnati, but Inter Miami lost 1-0 in a defeat that sealed its elimination from playoff contention.

The Argentina forward's arrival in the United States caused a surge in ticket and merchandising sales.

Inter Milan managing owner Jorge Mas said earlier this month that "everything has changed" since Messi's arrival at the club.

The MLS club have announced their their first overseas tour earlier this month and will play two exhibition games in China on Nov. 5 and Nov. 8.

The former Barcelona star will then join up with the Argentina squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Brazil.

From goalkeeping heroics to drama at both ends of the table in Germany, these are the key talking points from the Women's Super League (WSL), along with some highlights from Europe.

Keating's stock on the rise as City stay top

There is certainly a precedent at Manchester City for trusting in young players. England regulars Keira Walsh and Georgia Stanway once flourished in the senior team despite their lack of experience, while Ellie Roebuck's stunning debut as an 18-year-old in February 2018, when she came on in the second minute for the injured Karen Bardsley against Chelsea, showed that trust extends to goalkeepers too.

So there should be little surprise that 19-year-old Khiara Keating has been given a chance between the sticks for City this season. And even less surprise that she has impressed in every game. Watching the teenager keep her third clean sheet in four matches, in a 1-0 win over against Leicester City decided by Chloe Kelly's 10th-minute goal, brought back memories of Roebuck standing tall against Chelsea five years ago.

In an even match (City had 51% possession and eight shots on target, to Leicester's six), Keating trusted in her abilities and, time and again, found the claim, parry or block necessary to keep the opposition out -- showing particular bravery in one frantic sequence. Much like Roebuck before her, there are still some rough edges that will naturally smooth as she grows into the role. But as City sit atop the WSL table heading into the international break, there is little reason for manager Gareth Taylor to bring in the more-experienced Roebuck or Sandy MacIver in rotation. Keating's stock is certainly on the rise.

Chelsea dominate Brighton after early scare

Goalkeepers are something of a theme this week as Brighton's Sophie Baggaley also earned plaudits for her role in goal despite a 4-2 loss to Chelsea. With loanee Nicky Evrard not involved against her parent club, Baggaley, who spent the last two years warming the Manchester United bench, pulled off a number of incredible saves to deny the Blues an even bigger scoreline.

Particularly eye-catching during a first half in which she made seven saves, Chelsea boss Emma Hayes noted after the game: "The goalkeeper was having a worldie."

In total, WSL champions Chelsea had 30 shots (12 on target) and showed their dominance despite going behind to an early goal from Pauline Bremer. Summer signing Sjoeke Nüsken scored twice, before Guro Bergsvand (own goal) and substitute Aggie Beever-Jones made it 18 successive WSL home victories for Hayes' team.

Robins show improvements, but still have no points

Ahead of their clash against Arsenal, and after a 5-0 defeat to Man City last weekend, Bristol City boss Lauren Smith spoke at length about the ways in which her team were growing and trying to be better, pulling few punches about the defensive improvements required.

Inside seven minutes, the Robins showed the same naivety that had seen City walk all over them to allow Katie McCabe too much space outside the box in her favoured shooting position as she opened the scoring. But, unlike last weekend, Bristol City didn't allow their heads to drop and they put in a strong team performance to deflect almost everything Arsenal could throw at them from thereon in. Rachel Furness' 16th-minute equaliser gave the hosts hope, but ultimately McCabe struck again with a deflected effort that third-choice goalkeeper Olivia Clark could do little about in the second half to seal a 2-1 win.

The stats (79% possession for Arsenal; 25 shots to 1) tell the story of one world-class team against one that spent last season in a semi-pro league. But, roared on by a club-record women's attendance of 12,008 fans at Ashton Gate, Bristol's performance showed a rapid improvement and gives them some hope for the future despite no points from their first four games.

Real Madrid suffer first defeat of season

With five wins from five games in Liga F, Real Madrid may have looked comfortable this season. But, having fallen into the familiar step of grinding out wins more often than is comfortable -- Signe Bruun's 90th-minute winner over Villarreal last weekend a little too recent in the memory -- Las Blancas suffered their first loss of the season, 2-1 at home to Levante.

In the driving rain on Sunday evening, the match saw plenty of individual performances to note from Madrid: from goal scorer Linda Caicedo, to midfield architect Sandie Toletti, and full-back livewire Olga Carmona. Yet the hosts could not find a response to Gabi Nunes' header in the second half after Caicedo had cancelled out Paula Fernández's opener.

It was not the first time that Real have come unstuck against Levante but it showed just how much they miss forward Caroline Weir, who is sidelined with an ACL injury. For the visitors, who remain the only unbeaten side in the league alongside Barcelona, albeit with three 1-1 draws from six games, it was exactly the type of result they needed. Although they will be ruing the timing of the international window as it stops them building momentum.

Frauen-Bundesliga delivers drama at both ends of the table

Before this season's promotion to the Bundesliga, FC Nürnberg had only spent one previous campaign in the top flight: in 1999-2000 when the team [still over two decades from being integrated into the main club] managed just nine points from their 22 games. Four games into this campaign and last-placed Nürnberg had yet to get any points on the board, but goals at either end of the match proved enough as they scooped all three in a 2-0 win against an inconsistent Freiburg team to move up to 11th.

At the other end of the table, top side Wolfsburg found themselves two goals down at home to second-placed Hoffenheim inside 45 minutes. After a stinker of a week that saw them knocked out of the Champions League by Paris FC on Wednesday, things looked bleak at half-time on Sunday afternoon. But thanks to a penalty from Dominque Janssen and last-gasp equaliser from Alex Popp, they managed to avoid defeat at the hands of a Hoffenheim team looking to jump above their rivals.

Damallsvenskan title heads towards the wire

With just two rounds left of the Swedish season, Yuka Momiki's stoppage-time strike was enough for Linköping to snatch a 1-1 draw from title rivals Hammarby, after Ellen Wangerheim had opened the scoring for the hosts on Saturday.

And, fresh off a Champions League win over Twente in midweek, Häcken took advantage to open up a three-point lead at the top with a 1-0 win against Uppsala on Sunday. Their next match, a trip to Hammarby, is one that could settle the title with a game to spare.

Goal-scoring goalkeeper in the Toppserien

In Norway, Arna-Bjørnar's No. 1 (okay, their No. 24), Hanne Larsen, stepped up in the 86th minute against Avaldsnes to hammer a penalty beyond her opposite number, Siri Ervik, to equal the scores at 2-2.

Unfortunately for Larsen, she then had to pluck Susan Ama Duah's matchwinner out of the back of her net three minutes later as Arna-Bjørnar remained rooted to the bottom, two points below Avaldsnes.

And finally ... Miedema returns for Arsenal

After 11 months on the sidelines recovering from an ACL injury, Arsenal striker Vivianne Miedema came on for her first minutes of the season deep into stoppage time as Arsenal saw out a 2-1 win away to Bristol City. The Netherlands international, who is the WSL's all-time record scorer with 74 goals, entered the fray half an hour after Beth Mead who also returned from an ACL injury last weekend for the Gunners.

"She's worked so hard over the last few months," matchwinner McCabe told Sky Sports after the game. "It was a really special moment for Viv."

Next up for Arsenal is leaders Man City on Nov. 5, so they will need everything they have at their disposal.

Former Test batter and New South Wales captain Kurtis Patterson has been dropped from their Sheffield Shield team for the match against Victoria after another winless start to the season.
It is the second time this year that Patterson has been dropped after he was left out for the final game of last season when he was replaced as captain by Moises Henriques. Since last November Patterson has averaged just 14.92 in the Shield and has started this season with scores of 32, 4 and 10.
Blake MacDonald, who made his first-class debut in the final game of last season against South Australia and scored 61, comes into the squad.
However, in a boost for their hopes against Victoria at the MCG they will have Nathan Lyon available with the offspinner set to play his first four-day game of the season as he continues his comeback after the Ashes-ending calf injury.

For Patterson, this latest omission continues a difficult few years after he had reached the Australia Test side against Sri Lanka during the 2018-19 season and scored a maiden century in Canberra.

Since that season, where he hit three first-class centuries and another brace for a CA XI against Sri Lankans in Hobart which ultimately earned him his Test call, he has made three hundreds and averaged 27.19 in first-class cricket.

New South Wales squad vs Victoria Jackson Bird, Ben Dwarshuis, Jack Edwards, Matthew Gilkes, Chris Green, Ryan Hackney, Moises Henriques (capt), Daniel Hughes, Nathan Lyon, Blake Macdonald, Jack Nisbet, Jason Sangha, Chris Tremain

"Shane is one of the greatest fast bowlers of modern day cricket, and brings with himself a wealth of experience and knowledge having mentored some of the best in the business," Royals' director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara said. "He has served in the IPL and in India for a number of years and is well versed with the processes involved within the franchise ecosystem. He is someone who has a keen eye for helping the best become even better and we are delighted to welcome him to the franchise, and look forward to seeing the impact he can make towards moulding us into a title-winning team."
England hope that Brydon Carse can replicate Liam Plunkett's success in the middle overs after drafting him into their World Cup squad as a replacement for the injured Reece Topley.

Carse will arrive in Bangalore ahead of England's match against Sri Lanka on Thursday, though is unlikely to be considered for selection having last played competitively four weeks ago. He featured in one of England's four ODIs against New Zealand last month after impressing in the T20I series, and also played for their second-string side against Ireland.

Carse, 28, was born in South Africa but is a UK passport-holder who plays for Durham and Northern Superchargers in domestic cricket. A tall, powerful seamer who can also contribute with the bat from the lower order, he has won 12 ODI caps and three T20I caps since making his debut in 2021.

"He's a brilliant all-round package," Joe Root said on Monday. "He can score some handy runs for you, is very dynamic in the field and has a unique wicket-taking ability. He's got that [Ben] Stokes element to him where sometimes, you feel like nothing is happening and he'll pick up wickets."

England had swiftly and unceremoniously moved on from Plunkett after the last World Cup, when he was 34, and Carse is the closest like-for-like replacement that they have used in the four years since. "He almost feels like a junior Plunkett," Root said. "He's very similar. Pudsy [Plunkett] might not like me saying this, but he's probably got even more to offer with the bat as well."

Root also expressed his sympathy for Topley, who was officially ruled out of the World Cup on Sunday after scans confirmed a fracture in the index finger of his bowling hand. "The poor lad, it just doesn't seem to stop for him," he said. "Every time he does extremely well and gets a string of performances together where he's playing good cricket, he just seems to get a setback."
England travelled from Mumbai to Bengaluru on Sunday afternoon following their 229-run thrashing by South Africa. They will train on Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon before playing Sri Lanka at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Thursday, the first of five must-win group fixtures as they aim to reach the semi-finals despite three defeats in their first four games.

"The situation we find ourselves in now, we've got to make sure that we're ready and in the best possible place to perform well in the next game," Root told Sky Sports. "We'll look at that as a World Cup final now - then do the same for the game after that, and the game after that. All we've got to do is really focus on Sri Lanka.

"I've played in a number of different England teams, good ones and bad ones," Root said. "This is one of the very best. It's a very together team. We know what we need to do We've got some very simple messaging in front of us right now: we have to go out and win. In some ways, that unshackles us and frees us up to do what we do."

Shami has no regrets sitting out earlier World Cup games

Published in Cricket

Mohammed Shami didn't "feel bad" sitting and watching the first four games from the sidelines. He was only focusing on preparing as if he was going to play, and grab opportunities when they come his way.
On Sunday, an injury to Hardik Pandya forced India to alter their balance. Out went Shardul Thakur and Shami had the chance he'd been after. He struck with his very first delivery to remove Will Young and then made a mark later in the innings, with an excellent spell of death bowling to finish with 5 for 54, his second World Cup five-for.

Also, among his wickets were those of the well-set Rachin Ravindra and Mitchell Santner. Shami's spell helped India pull New Zealand back from an expected 320 to a below-par 273. In bowling the way he did, Shami gave the Indian team management more food for thought as far as team composition goes.

"When you come back after a long time to the XI, it is important to get confidence early," Shami said at the post-match presentation. "My first game in the World Cup helped me regain that confidence. It's not too hard (waiting on the sidelines) if your team is doing well."

Shami was asked of the frustration of sitting outside seemingly for no fault of his. He only lost out to Shardul for the sake of team balance, with the side preferring a bowling allrounder to occupy the No. 8 position, one they deviated from in the wake of Hardik's injury. It left India run the risk of having no back-up bowlers, but it didn't cost them in Dharamsala.

"They are your team-mates and if they are doing well then you should be supporting them," Shami said when asked about warming the bench. "If it's in the team's interest, I am okay with it. The wickets were important as it came against an opponent, which was sitting top of the points table going into this clash."

Shami was probed further. He was asked how he kept his motivation high. His response gave you a peek into his thought process, one that needs clarity and clear communication from the team management. This one, led by Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma, have been big on it. Very early on, Shami, and the rest of the playing group, was spoken to of their roles within the setup.

"Personally, my outlook is simple: you keep enjoying," he said. "This is the biggest sport, biggest place in cricket. You have 15 players. Four of them have to stay out. So, by being positive and enjoying the moment, you will get results. I always think to myself, I may not be here today, but I will be here tomorrow. If not tomorrow, then the day after tomorrow. We will definitely come in at some stage with rotation. And when your time comes, you contribute for the team. I think that way."

Shami glanced a look towards his colleague Mohammed Siraj, who was waiting to speak at the mixed zone soon after the press conference, when asked of the team culture and how the bowling group works together.

Shami had seen Siraj leapfrog him to become India's bowling spearhead during the period Bumrah spent in the sidelines with a back injury. It meant Shami was consigned to being the third frontline pacer in a XI where only two could feature due to team dynamics.

"We have a good package," he said of the bowling group. "You get to see it. You get the pace. You get to see the aggression. As far as enjoying is concerned, I have told you before, that if you enjoy the success of others, you will get better results. And the medal of the dressing room as well [for the best fielder], I believe we will get one today as well once we return to dressing room."

Did he have any favourites among the five wickets?

"All dismissals are my favourites," he said, "It is difficult to pick one, it is like making a building, every brick matters and so is the case with every wicket, they all matter a lot."

Melbourne Renegades 167 for 3 (Webb 49*, Harmanpreet 43*) beat Adelaide Strikers 86 (McGrath 31, Harmanpreet 2-11, Hayward 2-18)

A decisive 93-run stand between Courtney Webb and Harmanpreet Kaur followed by a crafty bowling display led by Ella Hayward and Hayley Matthews helped Melbourne Renegades to a thumping upset win over defending WBBL champions Adelaide Strikers at the Junction Oval.

Webb made 49 not out and Harmanpreet remained unbeaten on 43 as the pair controlled the second half of Renegades' innings against an impressive Strikers bowling unit to post a competitive 167 for 3 after being sent into bat.

Renegades spinners, led by Hayward and Matthews in the powerplay, as well as Sarah Coyte strangled Strikers in the chase. The trio picked up two wickets each and Coyte produced a stunning direct-hit run out off her own bowling to dismiss Bridget Patterson as Strikers' chase never gained any momentum against the disciplined bowling performance.

Renegades' batting display was steady without being spectacular. They were aided by some shoddy Strikers fielding with Jemma Barsby spilling two catches.

Strikers started well with Georgia Adams removing Matthews for 12, but she strangely only bowled one over for the innings. Tammy Beaumont and Josie Dooley both made starts and threatened to break free at times during a 51-run stand but neither were able to kick on. Both fell within an over of each other to leave Renegades precariously placed at 74 for 3 in the 10th over.

Harmanpreet and Webb assessed the situation and did not panic despite both scoring at less than a run-a-ball through the first 40 runs of their partnership, including only taking 14 runs off the power surge. But they scored 39 runs off the last 14 balls of the innings finding the boundary eight times against Amanda-Jade Wellington, Danielle Gibson and Megan Schutt. Webb struck five of them and Harmanpreet three.

The chase never got going as Hayward bowled four of the first nine overs of the innings and picked up the key wickets of Laura Wolvaardt and Katie Mack. Hayward's lengths and lines were superb as she rarely gave the stumps away. Wolvaardt was stumped trying to launch over long-off but was completely deceived in flight. Mack was also beaten in flight as she miscued to mid-off.

Coyte dropped an easy catch in the deep off Tahlia McGrath that threatened to be costly but she more than made up for it with a stunning run out. Patterson drove a ball towards long-on and took off for a single, Coyte dived full length to her right, gathered in the right hand and threw in the one motion while laying on her stomach and produced a direct hit as Patterson tried to scramble back at the striker's end.

McGrath holed out off Matthews and the chase fell apart from there. Strikers lost their last seven wickets for just 21 runs. Harmanpreet and Georgia Wareham chimed in with two wickets each as India's captain was named player of the match.

Colts rue late penalties that keyed Browns' win

Published in Breaking News
Sunday, 22 October 2023 23:41

INDIANAPOLIS -- A pair of controversial officiating calls in the final minute of Sunday's Browns-Colts matchup helped set up Cleveland's dramatic 39-38 victory and left Indianapolis wondering aloud whether they'd been wronged.

Cornerback Darrell Baker Jr. was on the unfortunate end of an illegal-contact penalty and, shortly after, a defensive pass-interference call that put the ball at the 1-yard line and set up the winning touchdown. The illegal-contact call negated a would-be sack-fumble by Colts linebacker E.J. Speed that was recovered by Indianapolis defensive tackle DeForest Buckner. The play would have, effectively, ended the game.

The interference call came in the end zone on a pass that was high and, arguably, uncatchable. The penalties were drawn by receivers Amari Cooper and Donovan Peoples-Jones, respectively.

"I don't agree with the penalties at all," Baker said. "When those balls are uncatchable, they usually throw those flags out. Especially when they're initiating the contact with the cornerback. You can put hands on him as long as you're looking for the ball. I'm not impeding their [progress]. I don't know what else I could do better on that."

On the interference call, which occurred along the back line of the end zone, Baker added, "I know [People-Jones] initiated contact with me. And then I saw the ball in the air so if we're both hand fighting, that's all right. And we're both looking for the ball. So, I definitely don't see a reason why it's pass interference."

Baker was only in the game because starter JuJu Brents went down with a quad injury. Baker started in Week 1 but was benched the following week.

The interference call resulted in the ball being placed at the 1-yard line with 33 seconds remaining. The Colts successfully defended on the next three Cleveland plays before running back Kareem Hunt scored on a tough run on fourth-and-goal from 1 yard out with 19 seconds left.

Ultimately, there were other culprits for the Colts (3-4) to point to beyond the pivotal pair of penalties. Quarterback Gardner Minshew threw for 305 yards but committed four turnovers. That makes eight giveaways for Minshew in his past two starts since starter Anthony Richardson suffered a season-ending right shoulder injury earlier this month.

Browns defensive end Myles Garrett produced two fumbles on sacks of Minshew, including one in the end zone that resulted in a Cleveland touchdown.

"It all comes down to winning the turnover battle," coach Shane Steichen said. "We're 3-0 when we win the turnover battle. When we don't, obviously, we've lost four. We've got to be better taking care of the football."

Running back Jonathan Taylor, who had 120 all-purpose yards for his best performance of the season, took a similar view.

"[The penalties were] a dagger because you've seen how the defense has played and you've seen the fight and all that they've given," he said. "The best thing you can do is to not let the refs get involved in the game."

Sources: Texas QB Ewers (shoulder) to miss time

Published in Breaking News
Sunday, 22 October 2023 23:41

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers is expected to miss time after suffering a grade 2 AC joint sprain in his right shoulder, sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel, confirming a report by Orangebloods.com.

An MRI on Sunday revealed the sprain in Ewers' throwing shoulder, which occurred during the No. 7 Longhorns' win over Houston on Saturday night.

The injury is not expected to be season-ending. A more finite timetable should emerge this week.

Ewers was hit hard on a third-down scramble by Houston's David Ugwoegbu, also injured on the play. Ewers was replaced by 6-foot-5, 238-pound redshirt freshman Maalik Murphy, who won the backup job in the spring.

Murphy completed 1 of 2 attempts for 7 yards as the Longhorns held on for the 31-24 win.

Murphy's backup, freshman Arch Manning, was the No. 5 overall recruit in the 2023 ESPN 300.

"I thought Maalik showed great poise and composure," Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said Saturday night. "He's got a lot of belief in himself, and he understands our system. If it's him this week, I know he'll prepare really well and he'll get the majority of those reps, and I think he'll play good football. And I think Arch will be ready.

"We'll have the utmost confidence in them to play good football."

Last year, Ewers suffered a severe sprain of his SC joint, where the sternum meets the clavicle, on a big hit against Alabama in Week 2. He missed the next three games, returning just about a month later against Oklahoma.
