Sala death: No action after manslaughter arrest

Published in Soccer
Wednesday, 11 March 2020 05:14

Police have said a man will face no further action after being arrested on suspicion of manslaughter following the death of Emiliano Sala.

Sala, 28, was killed in a plane crash in January 2019 after signing for Cardiff City from Ligue 1 side Nantes.

A man was arrested in June 2019 by Dorset Police on suspicion of manslaughter by an unlawful act but will face no further action.

Detective Inspector Simon Huxter said: "We have carried out a detailed examination into the circumstances of Mr Sala's death, this has been a complex investigation involving the examination of a large amount of evidence and in liaison with a range of organisations.

"An investigation into the operation of the flight continues and this is being led by the CAA and therefore it would be inappropriate for us to make any further comment at this time."

Sala signed for Cardiff for £15 million but never played for the club. A plane carrying the Argentina striker and pilot David Ibbotson, 59, lost contact with air traffic control north of Guernsey on Jan. 21 2019, with Sala's body later recovered in February. Pilot Ibbotson's body has not been found.

A hearing at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is set for the spring regarding Cardiff's dispute with Nantes over Sala's transfer fee.

Cardiff do not believe they are liable but FIFA have ruled the Championship club must pay the first instalment of £6m.

A statement from CAS statement said: "An appeal arbitration procedure has been opened. A hearing is likely to be fixed in spring 2020. A final award is not expected before June 2020."

Man United back Prem Lge suspension - Solskjaer

Published in Soccer
Wednesday, 11 March 2020 13:39

LINZ, Austria -- Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said Manchester United would back the suspension of the Premier League and European competitions to combat the spread of coronavirus.

United will play their Europa League last-16 first leg against LASK Linz behind closed doors in Austria on Thursday, a day after the World Health Organisation labelled the outbreak a pandemic.

Games across Europe have been ordered to be played without fans and postponed and Solskjaer said he would "understand" if a blanket ban was introduced.

"I would understand, yes, under the circumstances," said Solskjaer, who revealed the players have not been tested for COVID-19.

"Of course it's up to the experts to decide and the main concern must be the health of the general public and the decision that will be made we will back.

"We don't know what's going to happen. Have to get on with it when we can. I think football is for fans. Without fans we are nothing anyway. The game should be always for them. It's still on telly, but tomorrow [Thursday] we might get a different message or in two weeks."

Linz estimate that they will lose out on €1 million after the Austrian government ordered outdoor sporting events to be played behind closed doors.

Around 900 travelling fans have had their tickets cancelled but many supporters have still made the trip.

United are looking to take a lead back to Manchester ahead of the return leg, but Solskjaer has warned his players they will need to be focused in what are unusual circumstances.

"The players are focused and concentrating on the job," said Solskjaer. "These are difficult circumstances -- not just for football, but society.

"We have to do what we're told and get on with the game if that's what authorities think we should do.

"We will have to create own atmosphere in the team and game. We're used to training with no spectators and have played behind closed doors friendlies.

"They're focused and ready to perform even with no spectators. Of course it will be strange."

United will be without Anthony Martial against Linz after the Frenchman was left behind nursing a badly cut shin following a collision with a post during the 2-0 win over Manchester City on Sunday.

Paul Pogba is also unavailable as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury but could return for the FA Cup quarterfinal with Norwich on March 22.

"Anthony hurt himself when slid into post so he's not ready," said Solskjaer. "Hopefully he'll be ready for Sunday [against Tottenham] but not sure.

"Paul is getting closer -- he's not trained with the team fully yet but by next week he'll be back."

Jack Leach will be given his chance to prove he is ready for a Test return in Galle next week, after being named in England's XI for their final warm-up match, against a Sri Lanka President's XI, which gets underway in Colombo on Wednesday.

Leach has endured a miserable winter on England's tours of New Zealand, where he was hospitalised with what began as a bout of gastroenteritis but developed into sepsis, and South Africa, where he was sent home early after failing to shake off the sickness bug that struck the team in the early weeks of the tour.

He has also been struggling with a calf injury that required him to wear a support during England's training session at the P Sara Oval on Tuesday, but as England's senior spinner, he has been cleared to play in what will be his first competitive outing since the first Test against New Zealand in Mount Maunganui in November.

"I think this game will tell us a lot about where Jack is actually at," said Joe Root, the England captain, at an event hosted by the series sponsors, Moose Clothing. "He and the medical staff have been involved in making sure he peaks for that first Test.

"There's always an element of risk when you come back from injury," Root added. "You look at someone like Jimmy Anderson who had quite a long period away and still found a way to pick up a different injury coming back into the team. You can never really replicate Test cricket."

In Leach's absence in South Africa, Dom Bess, his Somerset colleague, seized his opportunity, claiming five first-innings wickets in England's victory at Port Elizabeth. But fitness pending, the senior man remains a key part of England's plans for the next 12 months, having claimed 18 wickets in their 3-0 series win in Sri Lanka in 2018-19, and with a five-Test tour of India looming in February next year.

And with that trip in mind, Root says that England are looking to build on the gains made in South Africa earlier this year, and develop a new-look team into a hardened and experienced outfit.

"I think you want to have an element of consistency," he said. "It's never going to be perfect but as much as possible you want guys to get experience in different parts of the world.

ALSO READ: England ban selfies amid Coronavirus fears

"We have got a big tour of India not far away and could face a lot of spin out there as well, so moving forward as a team you want continuity and consistency.

"You look at all the best sides that have been consistently at the top for long periods of time, it's the same faces playing time and time again.

"We've got a responsibility to try and do everything we can to try to win these two games, but also long-term look at this team, how does it look across all conditions and everywhere we go in the world."

The XI named for the warm-up game is a very close approximation of the side that is likely to play in the first Test, starting on March 19, with only the rested Stuart Broad liable to challenge for a place, ahead of either Chris Woakes or Sam Curran.

That means that Keaton Jennings and Ben Foakes - two of the stars of England's last Sri Lanka tour - will be waiting on the sidelines for now, alongside the legspinner Matt Parkinson and the replacement quick, Saqib Mahmood. However, Root insisted that there were no passengers in England's squad.

"You want guys like Keaton and Foakesy pushing the guys in possession all the time," he said. "They performed extremely well out here last time round and are here as options."

"In a tour game you want a bit of inter-squad rivalry and competition for places keeping everyone hungry and making sure that no one gets lazy."

England team v SLBP XI 1 Dom Sibley, 2 Zak Crawley, 3 Joe Denly, 4 Joe Root, 5 Ben Stokes, 6 Ollie Pope, 7 Jos Buttler (wk), 8 Sam Curran, 9 Chris Woakes, 10 Dom Bess, 11 Jack Leach.

Jets' Anderson has dreamed of playing with Brady

Published in Breaking News
Wednesday, 11 March 2020 13:39

One day after saying he "truly" wants to re-sign with the New York Jets, pending free-agent receiver Robby Anderson pulled a stutter-step, saying he has dreamed about playing with Tom Brady.

"I just had a dream last night that we were on the same team," Anderson said Wednesday morning, appearing as a guest on ESPN's SportsCenter set. "No lie. It's so crazy."

Which team?

"The crazy thing is, I didn't see the team," he said. "I didn't see like the actual colors of the jersey, but we were literally on the same practice field at practice together."

Asked what it would be like to play with Brady, he said, "That would be a dream come true."

Perhaps sensing a backlash on social media from Jets fans, Anderson followed up with a tweet, suggesting that maybe his dream sequence occurred at the Pro Bowl.

This is the time for posturing, so fans shouldn't get too wrapped up in what players say during contract negotiations. Anderson's comment about Brady sparked interest because the New England Patriots quarterback also is on the verge of becoming a free agent, the biggest non-labor story in the NFL.

Anderson, 26, said he's drawing "a lot of interest" from teams that say they're targeting him. The Jets would like to re-sign Anderson before he hits the open market, but his price could exceed $12 million per year -- and they might not be willing to go that high.

Anderson, who caught 52 passes for 779 yards and five touchdowns last season, spoke glowingly of the Jets during a Tuesday appearance on ESPN's NFL Live.

"I truly do want to be back with the Jets," he said. "I love Sam [Darnold]. I love my teammates, Jamal [Adams] and all those guys. I feel like there's unfinished business there that I've been trying to get done since I got there. I would hope to finish out the mission, all in all, but it's a business."

Governor: No fans at Ohio NCAA tourney games

Published in Breaking News
Wednesday, 11 March 2020 14:05

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said he will issue an order regarding "mass gatherings" because of the coronavirus outbreak, and it will affect NCAA tournament games in Cleveland and Dayton.

DeWine says the order will include banning spectators from games and that he'll be asking people to make "informed decisions." During a news conference Wednesday, DeWine said he will issue an order in the next 24 to 36 hours.

Dayton will host the NCAA's First Four next week at University of Dayton Arena, and first- and second-round games will be held at Cleveland's Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

"The order will be that there cannot be spectators there," DeWine said. "There certainly will be people -- there will be TV people, there can be radio people there, there can be sports writers, certainly can be the media there. But we're not going to have the large crowd."

DeWine applauded the Mid-American Conference for closing its tournament games to the general public this week.

NCAA tournament will be played without fans

The NCAA made the unprecedented decision Wednesday to hold the men's and women's basketball tournaments without fans due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

"The NCAA continues to assess the impact of COVID-19 in consultation with public health officials and our COVID-19 advisory panel," NCAA president Mark Emmert said in a statement. "Based on their advice and my discussions with the NCAA Board of Governors, I have made the decision to conduct our upcoming championship events, including the Division I men's and women's basketball tournaments, with only essential staff and limited family attendance.

"While I understand how disappointing this is for all fans of our sports, my decision is based on the current understanding of how COVID-19 is progressing in the United States. This decision is in the best interest of public health, including that of coaches, administrators, fans and, most importantly, our student-athletes. We recognize the opportunity to compete in an NCAA national championship is an experience of a lifetime for the students and their families. Today, we will move forward and conduct championships consistent with the current information and will continue to monitor and make adjustments as needed."

The NCAA announcement came after Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said he will issue an order that would ban fans from NCAA tournament games in Cleveland and Dayton.

Sporting events around the world have been affected by the virus. States and cities have banned large gatherings, leading to teams like the Golden State Warriors to say that they would play in front of empty arenas.

Ben Simmons (back) out at least 3 more weeks

All-Star point guard Ben Simmons of the Philadelphia 76ers will be out for at least another three weeks as he continues to recover from a nerve impingement in his lower back.

Simmons continues to receive daily treatment and is gradually increasing the activities in his strength and conditioning program, the Sixers said in an update released Wednesday.

Simmons has played less than one quarter since the All-Star break and has missed eight of nine games going into Wednesday night's home matchup against the Detroit Pistons. The Sixers are 4-5 since the break.

He aggravated the injury during a Feb. 22 game against the Milwaukee Bucks while scoring a layup with eight minutes left in the first quarter.

The Sixers have given no timeline for his return, but said Wednesday that he will be evaluated in three weeks.

Simmons, 23, is averaging 16.9 points, 8.3 assists and 7.8 rebounds this season. The Sixers (38-26) are in sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

Chinese league calls Americans back to play

As sporting leagues around the world grapple with how to respond to the coronavirus outbreak, the Chinese Basketball Association has told American players to plan to return as early as this weekend and prepare for the league to resume in early April. But it's not clear if the players will comply.

Approximately 40 Americans -- including former NBA players Jeremy Lin, Lance Stephenson, Tyler Hansbrough and Ty Lawson -- are under contract with the 20 teams that make up the Chinese Basketball Association. Most foreign players were sent home over the Lunar New Year holiday in late January, with instructions to prepare to return in mid- to late February.

As positive signs have emerged in China in recent weeks regarding containment of the virus, CBA team officials are discussing several formats for how to resume play, sources told ESPN, including hosting all 20 teams in one or two cities and playing a truncated regular season and playoff schedule, without fans.

American players have been informed that they will be required to spend 14 days in quarantine upon return to China, sources told ESPN, although details remain sparse regarding where and how that process would be conducted.

A memo dispersed to CBA teams by the league, a translated copy of which was acquired by ESPN, reads as follows:

"To all CBA clubs,

"In January 2020, the new coronavirus broke out in many places across the country. According to the requirements of national epidemic prevention and control, we postponed the subsequent games of the 2019-2020 CBA season scheduled to be held on February 1. At present, the situation of epidemic prevention and control in CBA cities is basically stable. In order to better respond to the national requirements on precise prevention and control, solid and orderly promotion of return to work and production, shoulder the mission and task of sports confidence, warm people's hearts and gather people's hearts, according to the relevant requirements of China Basketball Association on the restart of the league, the rest of the games of the 2019-2020 CBA season will restart from the beginning of April.

"All clubs and teams are requested to prepare for the restart of CBA League as early as April 2. At the same time, all teams should comply with the relevant requirements of the national and local epidemic prevention and control departments, continue to strengthen the epidemic prevention and control work, do a good job in making detailed and solid security measures such as epidemic prevention and control, and ensure the health and safety of club and team members. Details of the restart will be notified separately."

Conversations with players and representatives for around half of the Americans in the league revealed a significant amount of trepidation for how to proceed, with many players flatly stating at the moment that they do not plan on getting on a plane to China anytime in the near future due to safety concerns, at least not without significantly more information in hand.

The U.S. Department of State issued a travel advisory on Feb. 2 advising U.S. citizens not to travel to China after the World Health Organization declared a public health emergency. Some, but not all airlines have suspended service to mainland China. Players ESPN spoke with have expressed concerns about whether they will be allowed to return to the U.S. after the conclusion of the league, and whether they will be forced to undergo another process of being quarantined upon arrival.

The viral outbreak that began in China has infected more than 120,000 people in over 100 countries, and more than 4,000 deaths worldwide have been attributed to the virus. The World Health Organization has named the illness COVID-19, referring to its origin late last year and the coronavirus that causes it. It was officially declared a pandemic on March 11.

Sources: NBA, union mulling games without fans

Published in Basketball
Wednesday, 11 March 2020 14:39

In a meeting with the National Basketball Players Association on the coronavirus crisis Wednesday, the NBA and union discussed ways to continue the season without the cancellation or loss of games -- while conceding the sport was trending toward a period of time without fans in attendance at arenas, sources told ESPN.

The NBA/NBPA discussions were a prelude to a larger conference call set with the league's Board of Governors later on Wednesday, sources said.

The NBA is exploring solutions to allow them to continue playing and televising games during the coronavirus crisis, even with it increasingly likely that the league will do so in empty arenas, sources said. The NBA is bracing for the losses in the hundreds of millions of dollars across the sport, sources said.

As reported on Wednesday, league sources told ESPN that one scenario introduced into the league's conversation about enacting temporary measures in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak involves moving some games to NBA cities that have yet to suffer outbreaks.

If the virus clusters and forces a team out of its city and arena for a period of time, there has been discussion about moving games to the away opponent's arena if that city hasn't suffered an outbreak -- or even moving games to neutral cities and sites, league sources told ESPN.

Meanwhile, the Golden State Warriors announced earlier Wednesday that they will play Thursday's game against the Brooklyn Nets with no fans inside the Chase Center in response to coronavirus concerns.

The team's decision followed an order from the San Francisco Health Office prohibiting events where 1,000 or more people assemble. The Warriors tweeted that other events at the Chase Center through March 21 -- consisting of three concerts and a G League game -- would be canceled or postponed.
