JTG Pair Penalized In Fontana, Crew Chiefs Ejected

Published in Racing
Sunday, 01 March 2020 10:01

FONTANA, Calif. – Both NASCAR Cup Series teams from JTG Daugherty Racing were penalized Sunday ahead of the Auto Club 400 at Auto Club Speedway.

The No. 37 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE team of Ryan Preece and the No. 47 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE team of Ricky Stenhouse Jr. each received an L1-level penalty after their respective cars were found to be out of compliance with the NASCAR Rule Book.

Both Preece and Stenhouse’s vehicles were in violation of Section 20.20 of the NASCAR Rule Book, dealing with Assembled Vehicle Overall Rules.

The section in question notes that “parts, systems, devices, omissions or component failures cannot affect what would otherwise be the normal airflow over the body of the vehicle.”

The infractions were discovered during pre-qualifying inspection.

As a result of the rule violations, both Preece and Stenhouse were forced to forfeit their starting positions for the Auto Club 400 and will start from the rear of the field. Stenhouse had qualified 10th and Preece had posted the 20th-best lap during Saturday time trials.

Both teams will also be docked 10 driver and owner points, and crew chiefs Trent Owens (No. 37) and Brian Pattie (No. 47) have been ejected for the remainder of the Auto Club 400 per the at-track penalty provisions outlined in the NASCAR Rule Book.

De Gea is the world's best despite error - Ole

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 01 March 2020 09:54

LIVERPOOL -- Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has defended goalkeeper David De Gea after his howler against Everton, branding the Spaniard "the best in the world."

De Gea's clearance cannoned in off Dominic Calvert-Lewin to give Everton an early lead before Bruno Fernandes equalised to earn United a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park on Sunday.

De Gea redeemed himself with a wonderful save to deny Gylfi Sigurdsson in the final minutes but has now made seven errors leading directly to a goal since the start of last season -- the joint-most with Martin Dubravka and Bernd Leno.

"David has shown here his reaction, the way he made amends and saved Sigurdsson's shot at the end," Solskjaer said.

"David is, for me, the best goalkeeper in the world. He went through a difficult patch last season but he has been very, very good this season.

"I can't remember any goals this season apart from the Watford one. I trust David 100%."

De Gea, who signed a new long-term contract in September, is under pressure from No. 2 Sergio Romero, who kept a clean sheet against Club Brugge on Thursday, and Dean Henderson, who is impressing on loan at Sheffield United.

Henderson is also under contract with United and has put himself in position to be named in the England squad for this summer's European Championship.

Sources have told ESPN that Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are interested in signing Henderson this summer.

"We want the best possible squad for Man United and Dean is our player," Solskjaer added.

"He is doing really well at the moment and the day he comes back he is fighting to play, but we want a squad that is full of quality and competition. If you want to survive at the top you need to bounce off competition right, left and centre."

City beat Villa to win third Carabao Cup in a row

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 01 March 2020 10:33

Manchester City edged past Aston Villa to claim their third consecutive Carabao Cup with a 2-1 victory at Wembley on Sunday.

Sergio Aguero and Rodri scored in the first half to earn Pep Guardiola's side the first domestic trophy of the season.

Mbwana Samatta grabbed a goal back for Villa but they failed to complete the comeback in their first Wembley cup final since 2015.

Aguero opened the scoring after 19 minutes when he finished off Phil Foden's headed assist from close range.

Rodri made it 2-0 when he headed home from a corner but there was controversy because Villa should have been awarded a goal kick as the ball went off Ilkay Gundogan.

City dominated possession but Villa got back into the game just before the break when John Stones slipped under pressure and Anwar El-Ghazi delivered a fine cross for Samatta to head home.

Foden almost scored City's third early in the second half but his shot went narrowly wide.

In the last three minutes, Villa came close to scoring an equaliser but Claudio Bravo tipped Bjorn Engels' header onto the post.

Randle to join Warriors amid CBA shutdown

Published in Basketball
Sunday, 01 March 2020 10:13

Chasson Randle will sign a contract with the Golden State Warriors, his agent, Darrell Comer of YouFirst Sports, told ESPN.

Randle has reached a settlement with Tianjin of the Chinese Basketball Association, Comer said, and will be granted a FIBA letter of clearance as soon as his request is processed in Switzerland.

Two previous attempts to sign a 10-day contract were initially blocked by his Chinese team.

Randle was one of approximately 40 American players -- which include former NBA players Jeremy Lin, Lance Stephenson, Tyler Hansbrough, Ty Lawson and others -- in limbo as the CBA has indefinitely suspended its league due to the coronavirus outbreak. Randle played his last game on Jan. 21. The league is not expected to resume until early April, if at all, with most players still waiting for clarity about the status of their lucrative contracts, which are often worth in excess of several million dollars per season for top players.

The State Department issued a travel advisory on Feb. 2 advising U.S. citizens not to travel to China after the World Health Organization declared a public health emergency. Airlines around the world have suspended service to mainland China.

The viral outbreak that began in China has infected nearly 87,000 people globally, and nearly 3,000 deaths worldwide have been attributed to the virus. The World Health Organization has named the illness COVID-19, referring to its origin late last year and the coronavirus that causes it.

The coronavirus outbreak has had far reaching ramifications for basketball leagues around the world. Games in Northern Italy scheduled to be held in the pan-continental Euroleague and EuroCup this week will be held behind closed doors without fans, journalists and even non-essential club staff members, the Euroleague announced this morning.

In Lyon, France a domestic league game between ASVEL and Monaco was postponed yesterday, while Monaco's EuroCup game this week will be played behind closed doors. France has banned all indoor public gatherings of more than 5,000 people, according to the Associated Press. The EuroCup game in Turkey between Darussafaka and Virtus Bologna is in doubt after Turkish officials halted the arrival of flights from Italy, Iraq and South Korea, after previously grounding planes from Iran and China.

In South Korea, where the local Korean Basketball league has been on hiatus, the KBL has opted to hold the remainder of scheduled league games behind closed doors, opting to broadcast games on TV, ABC news reported. In Japan, leagues have been on hiatus for several weeks and a decision will come soon regarding how to proceed for the rest of the season, a source told ESPN.

Connacht claimed a bonus-point win over Southern Kings despite Peter Robb's 15th-minute red card.

Colby Fainga'a and Tiernan O'Halloran gave the province an early lead before Stefan Ungerer and Erich Cronje responded following Robb's dismissal.

However, a Jack Carty try after the break put Connacht back in control while Cronje's second score kept the Kings in touch.

A late penalty try secured the extra point for Connacht in Port Elizabeth.

The Irish visitors flew into an early lead as Fainga'a and O'Halloran both crossed inside the opening five minutes.

Having laid the platform for a comfortable victory, Connacht's plans took a turn when Robb was shown red for striking Howard Mnisi in the neck with an elbow as he tried to fend off the centre.

Kyle Godwin's yellow card shortly after temporarily reduced the visitors to 13 men with the Kings taking full advantage of the situation, nabbing quick back-to-back tries to draw level.

Carty landed a penalty to send his side into the break with a slim lead before picking a gap after the restart to extend Connacht's advantage.

Although Cronje crossed again, Connacht sealed the win with a late penalty try to give the final scoreline a more comfortable look.

Connacht are now just two points behind Scarlets in Conference B, who currently occupy the third and final play-off spot.

Wasps recovered from a slow start to secure a five-try win over London Irish and leapfrog their opponents into the top half of the table.

Ben Meehan and Ben Loader gave Irish a deserved 14-3 lead before Biyi Alo replied on the stroke of half-time.

Fellow Wasps prop Ben Harris gave the visitors the lead only for Irish's Matt Rogerson to crash over soon after.

But Wasps finished much the stronger with Marcus Watson, Dan Robson and Jacob Umaga all crossing the whitewash.

More to follow.

Exiled Russell may return for Scotland tour

Published in Rugby
Sunday, 01 March 2020 07:06

Finn Russell could return for Scotland's July tour after holding positive talks with head coach Gregor Townsend.

Russell has been absent for the Six Nations to date after a breach of team protocol in January.

The pair have mutually agreed that he will remain unavailable for the final two fixtures.

But BBC Scotland has learned Russell will call into the coaches' meeting ahead of Sunday's visit of France.

The Paris-based play-maker will share his insight into the French squad and coaches to help his international team-mates prepare to face their grand slam-chasing opponents.

Russell was not considered for Scotland's opening defeats by Ireland and England after reportedly ordering a third beer at the team hotel, breaching the squad's pre-agreed limit of two.

In a newspaper interview, the fly-half subsequently said he did not have a "personal relationship" with Townsend, who coached him at Glasgow Warriors and the national team.

Townsend told BBC Scotland that Russell's media comments proved he was not yet willing to "align himself" to Scotland's standards.

Despite relations appearing strained, the player and coach have since spoken positively, and Russell is expected to be available for the July fixtures against world champions South Africa and New Zealand, where he could win his 50th cap.

Meanwhile, Townsend has added Edinburgh lock Lewis Carmichael to his Six Nations squad in place of Worcester Warriors back-row Cornell du Preez, while wing Darcy Graham's knee injury will keep him sidelined for the remaining championship games.

Scott Russell Named Daytona TT Grand Marshal

Published in Racing
Sunday, 01 March 2020 08:00

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – American Flat Track officials have confirmed that Scott Russell will serve as the Grand Marshal for the season-opening Daytona TT on March 14 at Daytona Int’l Speedway.

Perhaps no motorcycle racing icon and venue anywhere in the world are so synonymous with one another as Russell and Daytona. Russell would still go down as one the greatest American roadracers in history even without his Daytona exploits; during the course of his decorated career he racked up World and AMA Superbike titles, 500GP podiums, a victory in the prestigious Suzuka 8-Hour, and was named AMA Pro Athlete of the Year in 1992.

That said, there’s no question it’s his five Daytona 200 triumphs that he’s most fondly remembered for. His Daytona legend was earned not only based on the sheer volume of his successes (he’s tied with Miguel DuHamel for the most wins in the race’s glittering history) but also the stunning manner in which he won them, even when pit up against seemingly insurmountable odds.

Russell took his first Daytona 200 victory in 1992 in a photo finish over fellow World Superbike king Doug Polen despite getting fuel dumped all over him during a pit stop. And then in 1995, he memorably crashed on the opening lap only to remount and chase down his fierce rival, World Superbike all-timer Carl Fogarty, for the win. And in other years, he was simply in a class of his own, destroying fields stacked with national and world championship-caliber contenders.

It’s worth noting that the Georgian’s five wins could have easily been seven; he fell a combined .06 seconds short of garnering two additional victories in narrow defeats at the hands of AMA Superbike ace DuHamel and 500GP superstar Eddie Lawson.

Beloved for his flashy riding and gritty substance, Russell endeared himself to legions of fans all over the globe with his cocky “Ru$$el” persona and “Screamin’ Chief” helmet design that’s still popular among racers to this day. His presence is certain to further underline the momentus nature of the inaugural Daytona 200/Daytona TT doubleheader.

“I’m really proud to be able to named Grand Marshal for the Daytona TT and have the opportunity to come back and be involved again,” Russell said. “I watched the TT last year and thought it was really cool. And I hear they are making some improvements to the layout that should make it even better this year.

“It’s awesome to see everybody excited about flat track again and the sport is definitely on the rise. I made it out to the Atlanta Short Track last year, and I could see there are a lot of young, fast guys in the sport that are easy to root for. And it’s probably no surprise that JD Beach is one of my favorites coming from road racing. I expect he’ll be right there in the mix at the Daytona TT.

“It’ll be a great day. Running the Daytona 200 and Daytona TT together is going to be really cool. It reminds me of back in the day when they ran the Supercross and 200 all on the same weekend.”
