Toss Karachi Kings chose to bowl v Islamabad United

Looking to move out of fifth place in a six-team tournament, Karachi Kings captain Imad Wasim kept with conventional wisdom and opted to chase on a ground that is expected to be good for batting. He was also happy to field an unchanged XI even though they are coming off a 52-run thumping in their last game against Multan Sultans.

Islamabad United had big news after including Dale Steyn in their XI. The South African fast bowler will be making his debut in the Pakistan Super League with England batsman Dawid Malan making way. Considering that left them a batsman down, Islamabad had to bring in Rizwan Hussain for Amad Butt to keep their balance.

Karachi Kings 1 Babar Azam, 2 Sharjeel Khan, 3 Alex Hales, 4 Imad Wasim (capt), 5 Chadwick Walton (wk), 6 Cameron Delport, 7 Iftikhar Ahmed, 8 Mohammad Amir, 9 Umaid Asif, 10 Chris Jordan, 11 Umer Khan

Islamabad United 1 Asif Ali, 2 Luke Ronchi, 3 Faheem Ashraf, 4 Colin Ingram, 5 Colin Munro, 6 Shadab Khan (capt), 7 Rizwan Hussain, 8 Musa Khan, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Ahmed Safi, 11 Rumman Raees

World champion withdraws, Liu Shiwen injured

Published in Table Tennis
Sunday, 01 March 2020 04:25

Liu Shiwen is one of the most successful of all in the history of the ITTF World Tour Qatar Open.

Notably, she has won the women’s singles title on three occasions, the only player who can match that record is her now retired colleague, Zhang Yining, the former Olympic and World champion; she won four times succeeding in 2005 and 2006, then once again in consecutive years in 2008 and 2009.

Only once did Zhang Yining lose in the final in Qatar, in 2002 she was beaten by compatriot Wang Nan.

However in terms of appearances in women’s singles finals, Liu Shiwen goes one better. In addition to winning in 2011, 2016 and 2018; she was also the runner up last year as well as in 2010 and in 2013.

Similarly, she has enjoyed women’s doubles success; always partnering Ding Ning, she was the runner up 2009, the winner in 2010 and 2016.

Also, there is one more title to add to the list, last year she won the mixed doubles partnering Xu Xin.

Withdrawals

Unfortunately, in addition to Liu Shiwen other notable names have cancelled their entries. In particular in the men’s events Germany’s Timo Boll and Dimitrij Ovtcharov have withdrawn, as has the in form Qiu Dang, the winner at the recent 2020 ITTF Challenge Series Plus Portugal Open..

Likewise, owing to the current quarantine situation in Qatar as a result of the coronavirus, players from the Korea Republic and, with the exception of Chuang Chih-Yuan, the whole of the Chinese Taipei team, have been forced to withdraw.

Effect on seeding

The effect in the men’s singles entry is that Japan’s Jun Mizutani, Hong Kong’s Wong Chun Ting, Frenchman Simon Gauzy and England’s Liam Pitchford now enter the seeding. Similarly, Japan’s Hitomi Sato and China’s He Zhuojia now appear on the women’s singles seeding.

In the men’s doubles, China’s Ma Long and Xu Xin replace Korea Republic’s Jeoung Youngsik and Lee Sangsu at the top of the list. The combination of Poland’s Jakub Dyjas and Belgium’s Cédric Nuytinck, alongside the latter’s colleagues Martin Allegro and Florent Lambiet enter the seeding as do Japan’s Shunsuke Togami and Yukiya Uda in addition to Frenchman Tristan Flore and Emmanuel Lebesson.

New to the women’s doubles seeding, following the absence of Chinese Taipei’s Chen Szu-Yu and Cheng Hsien-Tzu, is the Polish pairing of Natalia Bajor and Natalia Partyka.

Meanwhile, Jun Mizutani and Mima Ito now occupy the top seeded mixed doubles spot; the absence of Chinese Taipei’s Lin Yun-Ju and Cheng I-Ching, originally second in the order of merit means that Germany’s Patrick Franziska and Petrissa Solja, alongside the French pairing of Tristan Flore and Laura Gasnier are seeded.

Joel Makin slides into the world top ten for the first time

First Welshman in top 10 since David Evans in 2002
By ELLIE MAWSON – Squash Mad Correspondent

Joel Makin has become the first Welshman since David Evans in 2002 to break the top 10 after the PSA Men’s World Rankings for March were released today (March 1).

Makin, the 25-year-old from Pembrokeshire, rises one place to No.10 as Egypt’s Mohamed Abouelghar falls out of the top 10 for the first time since September 2018.

Makin, coached in the Midlands by Robert Owen, has risen steadily up the rankings during the past two years and, allied to his formidable fitness, he is adding the necessary elements in quality shot placement required to continue that upwards trajectory.

Tournament of Champions winner Mohamed ElShorbagy stays at the top of the World Rankings with Ali Farag (No.2), Tarek Momen (No.3), Karim Abdel Gawad (No.4) and Paul Coll (No.5) completing an unchanged top five.

Peru’s Diego Elias (No.6) and Germany’s Simon Rösner (No.7) swap places, while Egypt’s Marwan ElShorbagy stays at No.8 with Colombia’s Miguel Rodriguez rising a place to No.9 as Makin completes the top ten.

Fares Dessouky (No.12) and Saurav Ghosal (No.13) retain their spots with Mazen Hesham rising two places to No.14 and former World No.1 James Willstrop climbing three places to No.15.

France’s Gregoire Marche (No.16) and Zahed Salem both drop places (No.19), while World Junior champion Mostafa Asal rises a place to No.18 and Omar Mosaad (No.17) and Adrian Waller (No.20) remain unchanged to complete the top 20.

The biggest mover on the Men’s Tour is Egypt’s Ibrahim Elkabbani after he rises 154 places to No.263 in the world following his victory at the HCL SRFI Indian Tour – Jaipur Leg 2020.

Williams Wins, Madden Is Xtreme Champion

Published in Racing
Sunday, 01 March 2020 03:30

MOCOC, S.C. — Saturday night’s Drydene Xtreme DIRTcar Series event might have been the finale of the winter tour’s inaugural season, but it featured a few significant firsts.

The first visit to Modoc Raceway, the first Xtreme Series championship title awarded to Chris Madden and the very first feature win in a super late model for Rum Runner Racing’s newest pilot — Pearson Lee Williams.

Williams drove a great race, fending off heavy pressure from the hungry challengers behind him that included the likes of tour winner Zack Mitchell, Casey Roberts, regional favorite Brandon Overton and Joshua Bishop. Madden kept it straight and stayed out of trouble to clinch the inaugural Xtreme Series championship, worth $20,000, on the back of a 12th-place finish.

“It is definitely a good accomplishment, kicking off the season with a championship on a new series is pretty awesome,” Madden said. “We’d just like to thank the guys for putting up a series for us to run through the winter around home to make some decent money and keep us going.”

With two wins in series action over the five completed races, Madden was the only repeat winner. Clinching the title by nine points over Ross Bailes, Madden also took a moment to thank his crew at Scott Bloomquist Racing and sponsors at Drydene Performance Products for their contributions to his success.

“Without those guys, it’s impossible for me. It’s not just about me, it’s a team effort here. As long as everybody pulls their weight and plays their part, we’ve got a pretty dominant team here,” Madden said.

An overjoyed Williams commented on his big accomplishment after the race by saying, “It’s kind of a dream. This is my first year in a super late model, never raced it before. It’s different, but I can’t stress it enough… I feel I have the best crew, the best car owners. They give me the best. Hard work pays off.”

Zack Mitchell finished second.

“I’m proud of all that. We’re a little smaller team, don’t have quite the resources these other guys have. I’m not making excuses, but to run with those guys I’ve watched race my entire life, it means the world,” Mitchell said.

Casey Roberts, Brandon Overton and Joshua Bishop rounded out the top five.

Bailes clinched the runner-up spot in points by a single marker on the back of his eighth-place Feature finish, earning him the $10,000 points fund check.

Williams, Madden, Mitchell, Trent Ivey, Kyle Strickler and Tim Vance were all recipients of $1,000 bonuses for perfect attendance throughout the series.

Roczen Wins, Ties Tomac For Championship Lead

ATLANTA — The Monster Energy AMA Supercross an FIM World Championship crossed the season’s halfway point Saturday night at Mercedes Benz Stadium and when the dust cleared race winner Ken Roczen and Eli Tomac were tied at the top of the standings.

Round nine of the 17-race series was a barn burner in front of 59,743 fans. Roczen of Team Honda HRC. Roczen pulled the holeshot and disappeared from the pack to convincingly grab his third win of the season.

The victory brought the Honda rider into a championship points tie with Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Eli Tomac.

After two fourth-place finishes in the past two weekends, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Justin Barcia grabbed a podium finish the hard way – the Yamaha rider recovered from a 15th place start to steadily and aggressively push through the pack to finish in second place.

Red Bull KTM’s Cooper Webb spent all week recovering from a brutal crash seven days prior; after an eighth-place start Webb fell back a bit in the early laps but kept his head down.

Tomac also started poorly, then mis-timed a block pass on Rocky Mountain ATV/MC-KTM-WPS’s Blake Baggett, sending both riders to the ground. Tomac remounted in 14th and made the push toward the front.

With four minutes left on the clock Tomac reached Webb and started applying the pressure – at that point battling for sixth place. The two moved forward on the leader board and with two laps remaining had reached Team Tedder / Monster Energy Racing’s Martin Davalos who ran in third.

On the final lap, Webb squared up a 180-degree berm and cut under and passed Davalos with hardly an inch to spare. Tomac followed and kept the pressure on Webb, but the defending champ held strong until the end and turned what might have been a no-show event for most riders into a podium finish.

In the Eastern Regional 250SX class, GEICO Honda’s Chase Sexton brought home his second win of 2020, making it two in a row and breaking the title points tie. Sexton is now the sole owner of the Eastern Regional red No. 1 plate after three rounds of that series.

Once the Atlanta points were tallied the 450SX Class has a shared points lead between Tomac and Roczen.

All the racers will resume the battle next Saturday night as the Monster Energy Supercross series heads to Daytona Int’l Speedway in Florida.

It’s Hafertepe In Canyon ASCS Thriller

Published in Racing
Sunday, 01 March 2020 04:19

PEORIA, Ariz. — A narrow groove and slower traffic provided a race for the ages at Canyon Speedway Park with the battle to the checkered flag coming down to the final 100 feet as Sam Hafertepe Jr. edged Justin Sanders for Saturday’s SawBlade.com A-Feature win with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network.

A huge turnaround from the start of his season in Florida, Hafertepe’s goal for the weekend was to test and tune before returning to action with the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1.
While very confident in his car during feature, that Florida frustration was lingering going into the night’s races.

“We were frustrated Thursday during practice. We were frustrated last night but we finally clicked on something in the feature tonight and as soon as we took the green and I felt it going into turn one and I said this race is over,” stated Hafertepe.

Taking the lead away from Harli White on lap two, Hafertepe spent the first half of the race uncontested as the track began narrowing from the top to the bottom. Losing the lead on lap 22 to Justin Sanders, who took the point with a high line pass off the fourth turn, the No. 21k of Thomas Kennedy sat directly in front of the race for the lead.

Not able to clear Kennedy, who had been running third before going around on lap five, the advantage came back to Hafertepe on lap 28. Stalked by Sanders with Harli White racing into the picture as well, the top three raced the white flag with Sanders diving under Hafertepe through the first and second turns.

Still having to contend with lapped traffic as the final two turns came onto view, Sanders was forced to the middle groove with Hafertepe diving as low as possible.

Dead even off the final turn, both drivers mashed the throttle with the checkered flag in view and Sam Hafertepe Jr. winning by 0.116 seconds.

Back to back podium finishes for Sanders, the California shoe bettered himself by one spot as Harli White made her second career podium appearance with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network.

Moving up from seventh, Matt Covington retains the series points lead with a fourth-place finish. Dominic Scelzi completed the top five after starting 14th.

A weekend total of 51 drivers from 15 states and a trio of counties, 48 returned for Saturday’s showdown.

The finish:

Feature (30 Laps): 1. 15H-Sam Hafertepe Jr[6]; 2. 17S-Justin Sanders[8]; 3. 17W-Harli White[1]; 4. 95-Matt Covington[7]; 5. 41X-Dominic Scelzi[14]; 6. 11-Roger Crockett[9]; 7. 01-Colby Copeland[12]; 8. 83T-Tanner Carrick[2]; 9. 28-Scott Bogucki[5]; 10. 17-Seth Bergman[13]; 11. 52-Blake Hahn[22]; 12. 14-Jordon Mallett[21]; 13. J2-John Carney II[20]; 14. 5H-Michael Faccinto[16]; 15. 21K-Thomas Kennedy[3]; 16. 37-Mitchell Faccinto[17]; 17. 18S-Jason Solwold[11]; 18. 38B-Blake Carrick[10]; 19. 24D-Danny Sams III[4]; 20. (DNF) 88N-DJ Netto[18]; 21. (DNF) 41-Colton Hardy[19]; 22. (DNF) 21P-Robbie Price[23]; 23. (DNF) 41S-Giovanni Scelzi[15]

March 2: T20 World Cup - Bangladesh v Sri Lanka, Melbourne

Our XI: Nigar Sultana, Chamari Atapattu, Murshida Khatun, Umesha Thimashini, Fargana Hoque, Salma Khatun, Rumana Ahmed, Shashikala Siriwardene, Ritu Moni, Udeshika Prabodhani, Kavisha Dilhari

Captain: Chamari Atapattu

The only ray of light in Sri Lanka's campaign. Atapattu has scored 124 runs in the tournament at a strike rate of 134.78 and has also picked up a couple of wickets. She is the one who can get you the most points.

Vice-captain: Salma Khatun

The Bangladesh captain has been prolific with the ball. She has picked up six wickets at an economy rate of 6.87 and a strike rate of 10.3. In a game that is expected to be low scoring, she could get you a fair share of points.

Hot Picks

Nigar Sultana: Sultana has been the most consistent performer for Bangladesh in the tournament. She is the highest run-getter for her side with 75 runs at a strike rate of 89.28. Her glovework has also been neat and that can fetch you some points there as well.

Ritu Moni: Ritu Moni had a dream game against New Zealand, registering her career-best bowling figures (4 for 18) and also got a few runs with the bat.

Shashikala Siriwardene: She has picked up three wickets so far, though her economy rate has shot up a little bit (7.54) thanks to the pounding she took from Shafali Verma.

Value Picks

Udeshika Prabodhani: By far the pick of the bowlers for Sri Lanka in the tournament, she has been swinging the ball and has been extremely accurate. Her numbers are great: three wickets at an economy of 3.83.

Umesha Thimashini: Thimashini scored a fluent 20 against Australia but had an off day against India. She has played a couple of T20s against Bangladesh in the recent past and did well, picking up five wickets and scored 63 runs.

Point to note

  • Sri Lanka's average first-innings score in the tournament is 121. Bangladesh have not batted first yet, and their average score is 100. So expect a low-scoring game again and have enough bowling options.
