Stream LIVE: 2020 MLS SuperDraft

Published in Soccer
Thursday, 09 January 2020 09:53

The 2020 Major League Soccer season doesn't kick off for another seven weeks (stream every out-of-market game live on ESPN+), but clubs will take their first steps toward constructing a title-winning roster in the MLS SuperDraft. The two expansion clubs joining the league this season, Inter Miami CF and Nashville SC, will pick No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.

Rounds one and two will take place on Thursday, with rounds three and four taking place on Jan. 13. Each club will have three minutes to make their selection once on the clock -- down from four minutes in the 2019 edition -- and there will be no intermission between rounds one and two.

This year's draft will be the first not held in a central location. Instead of every club's decision makers gathered in one place, surrounded by eager prospects and rowdy fans, this year's SuperDraft will be conducted over conference call and web streaming.

A pair of trades see a slight shuffle in the top 10 of this year's draft order, with Inter Miami acquiring the No. 3 overall selection from FC Cincinnati in exchange for $150,000 in General Allocation Money, and the New England Revolution will draft sixth overall, the pick coming from Sporting Kansas City as part of the 2018 trade for Krisztian Nemeth.

So, who will your team take?

Domestic first-class tournament stalls in Zimbabwe

Published in Cricket
Thursday, 09 January 2020 08:17

Zimbabwe's players have not been provided with any reason for the two Logan Cup matches that were supposed to begin on Thursday not getting underway as scheduled. The first-class domestic tournament started on December 10, after a delay to the start of the season while ZC waited for an ICC disbursement following its reinstatement as a Full Member in October.

The competition is in its fifth round and has already been disrupted once. Last week's match between Rhinos and Tuskers, due to take place at Takashinga Cricket Clun, did not happen.

ESPNcricinfo understands that the players believe there are insufficient funds to play the matches, taking into account the costs of match fees and ground preparation. An insider confirmed the players have not received any communication about the rescheduling of fixtures. ZC did not respond to a request for comment.

However, a national team camp is taking place in Harare in preparation for the two-Test series against Sri Lanka, which takes place later this month. The provisional squad includes 25 players including nine uncapped players. Among them are Brian Mudzinganyama and Kevin Kasuza, who are third and fourth on the Logan Cup run charts and Charlton Tshuma, William Mashinge and Victor Nyauchi who are sixth, eighth and ninth on the wicket charts respectively. The familiar names of Brendan Taylor, Kyle Jarvis, Tendai Chatara and Donald Tiripano are also in training with the national side.

The series against Sri Lanka starts in 10 days' time and will be Sean Williams' first as Zimbabwe's captain. Zimbabwe have not played a Test since November 2018, when they drew a series in Bangladesh. Since then, they failed to qualify for the 2019 50-overs World Cup and were unable to participate in the qualification for this year's T20 World Cup because they were sanctioned by the ICC for government interference in the game. The ICC has since reopened the door to Zimbabwe and provided a much-needed financial life-blood. ZC is dependent on the ICC's money, especially to ensure the continuation of domestic cricket.

Zimbabwe provisional Test squad: Ryan Burl, Sikandar Raza Butt, Regis Chakabva, Brian Chari, Tendai Chatara, Chamunorwa Chibhabha, Craig Ervine, Kyle Jarvis, Kevin Kasuza, Timycen Maruma, William Mashinge, Prince Masvaure, Brandon Mavuta, Peter Joseph Moor, Brian Mudzinganyama, Tapiwa Mufudza, Carl Mumba, Tinotenda Mutombodzi, Ainsley Ndlovu, Richard Ngarava, Victor Nyauchi, Brendan Taylor, Donald Tiripano, Charlton Tshuma, Sean Williams

Toss Ireland won the toss and chose to bat v West Indies

Mindful of the wear and tear on a pitch that had already been used for the first ODI of this series, Ireland have decided to bat again in Barbados. Andy Balbirnie admitted that the visitors' batting had underwhelmed, putting it down to a set of players who are still acclimatising to conditions in the Caribbean. Nevertheless, he went into the game with the same XI. That includes William Porterfield, who is playing his 300th match for Ireland.

Ravens RB Ingram (calf) returns to practice

Published in Breaking News
Thursday, 09 January 2020 09:18

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Baltimore Ravens running back Mark Ingram returned to practice Thursday, participating in his first team workout since injuring his left calf on Dec. 22.

Ingram did not appear to favor his injured calf when doing some light running and performing high knee kicks on the sideline during the special-teams portion of practice. No offensive drills were run in the 30-minute media viewing period, and Ingram's level of participation won't be known until the injury report comes out Thursday afternoon.

The top-seeded Ravens host the No. 6 seed Tennessee Titans on Saturday in an AFC divisional playoff game.

"It's day-to-day, so we'll see," Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman said Wednesday. "But that's how it is in this league. You just have to be ready to adapt and adjust as it happens, like in the course of a game. It happened a couple weeks ago against Cleveland, so we had to make some adjustments there."

Ingram, 30, was selected to his third Pro Bowl this season after finishing fourth in the NFL with 15 touchdowns. In his first season with the Ravens, he was second on the Ravens with 1,018 yards rushing, which is the third time he's cracked 1,000 yards in a season.

He injured his left calf early in the fourth quarter of Baltimore's 31-15 win at Cleveland on Dec. 22. An MRI revealed a mild to moderate strain, Harbaugh said.

Ingram played a significant role in the Ravens breaking the 41-year-old NFL record for most rushing yards in a season.

If Ingram is sidelined, Gus Edwards would start in his place. Edwards set a career high with 130 yards rushing filling in for Ingram in the 28-10 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the regular-season finale.

The Titans rank No. 12 in the NFL in run defense, giving up 104.5 yards rushing per game.

Eagles part ways with OC Groh, WR coach Walch

Published in Breaking News
Thursday, 09 January 2020 09:22

The Philadelphia Eagles parted ways with offensive coordinator Mike Groh and wide receivers coach Carson Walch, head coach Doug Pederson announced Thursday.

The news comes a day after Pederson indicated they were likely to return in 2020.

"After much consideration and discussion, I have decided to make a change at the offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach positions. It was not an easy decision for me to make and I appreciate everything that Mike Groh and Carson Walch contributed to the organization and to my staff. As I said yesterday, they were a big part of our success down the stretch this past season. This is one of the most difficult parts of the job and something that weighs on me, but ultimately I have to make decisions that I believe are in the best interest of the football team moving forward," Pederson said in a statement.

"I apologize for any confusion that I created during yesterday's press conference, including my comments on Coach (Jim) Schwartz, who has done a great job as our defensive coordinator. It was my intent not to comment on any of my staff during the ongoing evaluations, because I wanted to be able to go through the process and communicate any decision directly with the individuals. I did a poor job of explaining that the first time I was asked. I will continue to evaluate everything, and consider all possibilities to improve our football team."

Groh had served as offensive coordinator for the past two seasons after joining the Eagles as wide receivers coach in 2017. Walch was the assistant wide receivers coach in 2018 and was promoted to wide receivers coach for 2019.

The Eagles ranked 14th in total offense and 11th in passing offense this season, but were decimated by injuries, particularly at wide receiver, and had to use several practice-squad players at the position as they won their final four games to win the NFC East.

The Eagles were eliminated from the playoffs on Sunday with a 17-9 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Anthony Watson is the only survivor from the weekend defeat by Gloucester as Bath make sweeping changes for the Champions Cup visit of Harlequins.

Watson captains the side from full-back while Freddie Burns replaces Rhys Priestland at fly-half.

Harlequins welcome back prop Kyle Sinckler after he missed the defeat by Sale last time out.

Alex Dombrandt comes in at number eight with Brett Herron at 10 in place of Marcus Smith.

With two games to go in the pool stages, both sides are already out of contention for the knockout rounds.

They have one win from eight games between them - Harlequins' 15-9 success at Twickenham Stoop in the reverse fixture in November.

Bath: Watson; Hamer-Webb, Wright, Willison, Brew; Burns, Green; Boyce, Walker, Judge, Garvey, Davies, Ellis, Williams, Bayliss

Replacements: Batty, Noguera, Nixon, Douglas, Merigan, Fox, Davies, De Glanville

Harlequins: Morris; Goneva, Northmore, Lasike, Ibitoye; Herron, Care; Marler, Crumpton, Sinckler, Cavubati, Lamb, J Chisholm, Robshaw, Dombrant.

Replacements: Musk, Garcia Botta, Collier, Collier, Young, Kunatani, Saunders, Penny, R Chisholm

What they said

Bath director of rugby Stuart Hooper: "It is another chance for the players to go out and grow our game. There will be players that will play that haven't had as much rugby as they would have liked, so there's an opportunity for them to play."

Harlequins head of rugby Paul Gustard: "It's important we regain our momentum, looking forward and not back. Bath represents a good opportunity for the squad to move forward and put together a complete performance based on a strong set-piece, resilient defence and attacking threat."

Saracens: Neil Golding replaces Nigel Wray as chairman

Published in Rugby
Thursday, 09 January 2020 06:44

Saracens have named lawyer Neil Golding as their new chairman as they look to recover from the salary cap scandal.

The club were deducted 35 points and fined £5.36m after an inquiry into business dealings between ex-chairman Nigel Wray and some Sarries players.

Wray retired after guiding the club to five Premiership and three European titles, but they are now bottom of the table following November's ruling.

"I recognise I am joining at a time of significant change," Golding said.

"We, as a board, are strongly committed to introducing new robust processes and working together with other Premiership Rugby Limited stakeholders in the best interests of Saracens and English rugby."

Saracens said Golding's "immediate priority" would be to "lead and oversee new governance measures including steps to ensure regulatory compliance."

Wray first invested in the club in 1995 and reclaimed full control in April 2018 by buying back a 50% stake sold to South African firm Remgro.

On Monday interim chief executive Edward Griffiths said the Saracens squad could be dismantled for the club to comply with salary cap rules this season.

Griffiths is leading a "scoping exercise" as the first step in making the club "whiter than white", and has not ruled out the possibility of letting star players go.

The London side are bottom of the Premiership on -7 points, 18 points behind 11th-placed Leicester.

Is LMP2 IMSA’s New Land Of Opportunity?

Published in Racing
Thursday, 09 January 2020 06:31

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Six cars participated in the LMP2 class in last weekend’s Roar Before the Rolex 24 At Daytona.

That’s huge for a class that had four entries in the 2019 Rolex 24 At Daytona, and just two entries for the full season last year.

It’s even more encouraging when you consider that the Rolex 24 will not even count toward IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship points, one of a few significant changes to the class for this season.

“I think it’s great,” said performance Tech Motorsports owner Brent O’Neill, whose team fielded the No. 38 ORECA in the full 2019 season and will return in 2020 with full-season co-drivers Cameron Cassels and Kyle Masson. “That’s what we look for. That’s why we race, to have some competition. At the end of the day, I think some of the moves that IMSA has made to grow the class has worked, will work.”

Collaborating with existing LMP2 teams and those who expressed interest in competing, IMSA announced a budget-friendly, six-race schedule WeatherTech Championship schedule for the class. The Rolex 24 At Daytona is a “standalone” event for LMP2, although it does count toward the IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup standings, and there are no back-to-back event weekends for the class this year.

“I think that’s magical, absolutely magical,” said 2019 WeatherTech Championship LMP2 championship-winning team co-owner Bobby Oergel with PR1-Mathiasen Motorsports, which is opening the year at Daytona with co-drivers Ben Keating, Simon Trummer, Nick Boulle and Gabriel Aubry in the No. 52 ORECA. “That was, to me, a slam dunk, to be able to limit the mileage we do at tracks that aren’t that important to most of the amateur racers.

“The bottom line is, bringing the budget down by limiting the amount of events – we still do twice as many hours as the ELMS (European Le Mans Series) does, for basically the same money. To me, that was a slam-dunk, out-of-the-park type of decision. In the end, I think it’s just beautiful. I really think it’s the thing that brings it back in this country. I mean, I couldn’t say more. I think it was the absolute right move.”

Another decision that has drawn praise from at least some LMP2 competitors was the requirement that every car have at least one Bronze-rated driver and the prohibition of Platinum-rated drivers in the class for every race except for the Rolex 24. Bronze drivers will be required to qualify and start every LMP2 race.

“With the bronze rating, I’m sure there are exceptions, but it’s fairly well matched for bronze drivers,” said Starworks Motorsport owner Peter Baron, whose team moved from the GT Daytona (GTD) class in 2019 and is fielding the No. 8 Tower Motorsport by Starworks ORECA for John Farano, Ryan Dalziel, David Heinemeier Hansson and Nicolas Lapierre in the 2020 Rolex 24. “A bronze driver can go out and race against other people that are his peers. They can be competitive.”

“I think the whole bronze thing was awesome because, really, IMSA had nothing to lose,” added O’Neill. “I mean, we were big on pushing to get the bronze driver in and I think it works. Immediately, John Farano signed up because he’s a bronze and he can come over here and run.”

Ironically, Baron was initially against the Bronze-driver requirement. He’s since changed his opinion.

“I was against it because I didn’t know any bronzes at the time,” he said. “Oddly enough, I was the only one that voted against it. Then, the rule announcement came out on a Friday and then my phone rang on Saturday from John about, ‘Hey, this bronze only makes a lot of sense for a person like him.’”

In addition to Baron’s team, DragonSpeed USA – which won the 2019 Rolex 24 At Daytona in its lone WeatherTech Championship appearance last year – has committed to running the full season with co-drivers Henrik Hedman and Ben Hanley in its No. 81 ORECA.

Era Motorsport, which has a wealth of historic racing experience, is entering the WeatherTech Championship full-time with team owner and driver Kyle Tilley and Dwight Merriman as season-long co-drivers of its No. 18 ORECA. Rick Ware Racing is also targeting a full WeatherTech Championship campaign with its No. 2 Multimatic/Riley LMP2.

“Everybody likes the prototypes, right?” says O’Neill of the interest in LMP2 from drivers. “Cameron’s a perfect example. He ran the Lamborghinis last year, he started in a Porsche and if you talk to him today, he’ll tell you that he doesn’t want to race sedans anymore. The prototypes are a cool car.”

And Baron believes even more will feel that way as time goes on.

“If you’re really a true gentleman out there and want to go professional racing, it seems like the LMP2 class is going to become the home of it,” he said. “Since we’ve been down this path and even since our announcement came out, it’s like my phone’s been ringing like crazy.

“Our announcement said we’re full. We have our four people, this is our program, and it’s still ringing. If I had another car, we could get another car out there. That’s good news about the growth of the series.

“I think now people see the talk of maybe five or six cars coming, and we’re going to surpass that for 2020. That’s just going to act as catalyst for ’21. I think 10, 11 cars on the grid for ’21 is a completely realistic number at this point based on the phone calls I’ve been having.”

GT Celebration Requiring Maglock Air System

Published in Racing
Thursday, 09 January 2020 06:42

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – The GT Celebration Race Series, a new 12-event U.S. sports car racing tour, has made the mandatory ruling that all drivers in the six-weekend sports car campaign must utilize the Maglock Air System for the competitors’ racing helmets.

Last month, GT Celebration Race Series announced the new series for Bronze-rated and below sports car drivers as well as retired FIA GT3 race cars. The inaugural GT Celebration Race Series will be competing ats racing facilities throughout portions of North America. Each event will consist of a three-day weekend of racing with two 40-minute sprint races over Saturday and Sunday.

The new Maglock Air driver system was inspired for the dust and heat of off-road racing and is a revolutionary concept for racers to connect to forced air systems into their helmets. With the new invention, rare earth magnets are carefully sourced and machined to create a solid and completely sealed bond between the air hose and helmet.

The power of magnetism fastens Maglock Air’s components with more than 20 pounds of tensile force. Solid enough to endure the roughest rides, the connection can be easily broken by a single and small amount of pressure from any oblique angle, making the Maglock Air the first of many new products to bring quick-release speed and safety to this essential link between driver and vehicle.

Designed for fast driver changes and to break away in the event of a hot extract, Maglock Air has been tested in the toughest environments in open wheel, closed wheel, off-road racing and rally cars. A complete Maglock Air system is easy to install and comes with roof-dock and dust cap. All GT Celebration competitors will receive one free Maglock Air system when they enter an event in 2020.

“Having been a driver in sports cars and truck competition over the years, I felt it is vital to have all drivers utilize the Maglock Air driver system in the GT Celebration Race Series,” said Rob Morgan, GT Celebration CEO & Founder. “The Maglock Air® has proven to be a great asset in off-road racing with the sport’s biggest names using this unique product, and now Maglock is expanding into the sports cars, NASCAR and World Rally cars as well as other racing forms. We believe the safety factor is very important for the drivers.”

“We are excited to have our Maglock Air system as a mandatory item in the new GT Celebration Race Series,” said Ed Jaeger, CEO of Rainmaker Solutions, Inc., producers of Maglock Air and FluidLogic. “After debuting our Maglock Air in Baja for numerous years, the success of the system has moved into a variety of racing forms in recent seasons. We believe this new magnet ‘quick-release’ system is the optimum way for the racers in making quick driver changes and fast extractions from their vehicles. Thank you to Rob and the GT Celebration Race Series for making the Maglock Air mandatory.”

Merced Added To World Of Outlaws Calendar

Published in Racing
Thursday, 09 January 2020 07:35

CALISTOGA, Calif. – The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series will return to Merced (Calif.) Speedway on April 10.

With the addition of Merced to the calendar, the previously scheduled event at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, Calif., will now be held on April 11. The changes are the result of the Spring Calistoga Speedway event being canceled due to local governance matters.

Those who purchased tickets to the originally scheduled Saturday, April 11, Calistoga Speedway event will receive a credit to their MyDirtTickets.com account to be used towards any World of Outlaws event available at WorldofOutlaws.com/tix. If a credit to your account does not work for you, then you have 30 days to request a refund. For more details call 844-DIRT-TIX to speak with a customer service representative about your options.

The scheduled Saturday, Sept. 19, Wine Country Outlaw Showdown at Calistoga Speedway is unaffected by the matters. Tickets for that event are now on sale.

A delay in the finalization of a purchase agreement by the City of Calistoga and Napa County has extended the due diligence period to May 1 – not allowing racing at Calistoga Speedway until that time.

The World of Outlaws’ return to the three-eighths-mile Merced Speedway will be the series’ first time back to the track since 2014 and fifth visit overall. David Gravel won the last series race there. Sammy Swindell holds the most wins at the track with three.

The Ocean Outlaw Showdown at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, Calif., was originally scheduled for Friday, April 10, but has been shifted to Saturday, April 11, due to the venue changes. Tickets are already on sale for the event. If you already purchased a ticket to the event, it will be honored for the new date.
