Multiple Tracks Renew Sanction With IHRA

Published in Racing
Monday, 06 January 2020 11:30

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The International Hot Rod Ass’n and three drag racing facilities — Dragway 42, Maryland Int’l Raceway and Palm Beach Int’l Raceway — have renewed sanctioning agreements.

Dragway 42, located in West Salem, Ohio, first opened in 1957. The facility underwent a complete ground-up restoration and reopening in 2017. Highlighted by the quarter-mile drag strip, the multi-purpose facility hosts drag racing, autocross, truck and tractor pulls, as well as concerts and music festivals.

Part of the renovation included Musco Lighting throughout the grounds and bleacher seats that were used at Daytona Int’l Speedway. Dragway 42 routinely attracts racers from neighboring states like West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Kentucky as well as Canada.

It has a strong IHRA Summit SuperSeries program and has hosted the IHRA Summit Sportsman Spectacular the past two seasons.

Maryland Int’l Raceway, in Mechanicsville, Md., opened in 1966 with the NASCAR Top Fuel Championships. It first became an IHRA track in 1992 and has also hosted IHRA Summit Sportsman Spectacular events the last two years.

With only 80 feet elevation, many records have been set at the quarter-mile track. It is the largest motorsports facility in Maryland and hosts more than 100 events annually, including some of the largest drag racing events on the East Coast.

It seats over 11,000 fans and has its own Jet Dryer with incredible track drying capabilities. In addition to its strong IHRA Summit SuperSeries program, Maryland International Raceway is home to some of the largest motorcycle drag racing events in the country.

Palm Beach Int’l Raceway, located in Jupiter, Fla., first opened in 1964. It boasts a quarter-mile drag strip, which is home to South Florida’s largest drag racing event, the Citrus Nationals.

PBIR features a tremendous IHRA Summit SuperSeries program, and with the great year-round weather, a multitude of special events. In 2019, legendary 17-time world champion Don Garlits set a world record for the fastest ever run in an electric-powered dragster.

It is another multi-purpose facility with a 2.2-mile FIA-certified road course, which has been used as an IndyCar testing track and currently serves as the Southern base for Bertil Roos Racing School. It is also the home to autocross, mud bog and has served as home for music festivals featuring such legendary acts as the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Eric Clapton.

Penske Shuffles Cup Series Crew Chief Roster

Published in Racing
Monday, 06 January 2020 13:10

MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Team Penske has announced changes to the organization’s three NASCAR Cup Series teams.

Team Penske will reposition its existing crew chief lineups across its Cup Series program as crew chief Paul Wolfe will work with Joey Logano and the No. 22 Ford Mustang team, crew chief Todd Gordon will transition to the No. 12 with Ryan Blaney and crew chief Jeremy Bullins will be paired with Brad Keselowski on the No. 2 Ford Mustang.

The road and pit crews will follow their respective crew chiefs to their new positions while the spotters that have been paired with Keselowski, Logano and Blaney will remain with their current drivers.

“As we do after the completion of each season, we evaluated what we can do to better achieve our goals and we felt it was time to make these changes to better position us to reach our potential,” said team owner Roger Penske. “We are fortunate that we have three very strong leaders in Paul, Todd and Jeremy, who work with experienced and talented crews. Pairing each of these winning teams with different drivers and cars should provide new energy and a fresh approach for the 2020 season.”

All three Team Penske teams won races and qualified for the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs last year, with Keselowski advancing to the round of 12 and Logano and Blaney to the round of eight.

Wolfe, Gordon and Bullins all have NASCAR championship pedigrees with Team Penske as Wolfe claimed the 2012 Cup Series crown with Keselowski and the No. 2 team, Gordon won the 2018 title with Logano and the No. 22 Ford team and Bullins led the No. 22 Ford team to the Xfinity Series owner’s championship in both 2013 and ’14.

The adjustments within the team will take effect immediately.

Kovalchuk to make Canadiens debut against Jets

Published in Hockey
Monday, 06 January 2020 11:51

Ilya Kovalchuk will make his Montreal debut Monday night when the Canadiens host the Winnipeg Jets, coach Claude Julien announced.

Montreal signed Kovalchuk, 36, Friday to a two-way contract for the league minimum, which will pay him $700,000 in the NHL and $70,000 in the AHL.

"I'm very excited. To see the response of the fans, it's been crazy," he said after morning skate. "I feel I have a lot of things to prove. I'm not going to do anything special, but I'm going to try to help the team win, for sure."

Kovalchuk joined the team over the weekend but did not play in the Canadiens' 3-2 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday in Montreal.

"We're not asking him to be our savior," Julien said. "He hasn't played in a while. So, I think we're going to have to gauge his ice time, and how he plays, and adjust accordingly. There could be some times where he misses some shifts, because we feel he has to catch his breath a little bit."

Kovalchuk returned to the NHL last season after a five-year stint in the KHL. The former 50-goal scorer and three-time All Star for the Atlanta Thrashers and New Jersey Devils was chased by several teams, but he ultimately signed a three-year, $18.25 million deal with the Los Angeles Kings in summer 2018.

Kovalchuk had just 16 goals and 18 assists in 64 games last season, and struggled to find a top role -- especially when the Kings made a coaching change from John Stevens to Willie Desjardins. The Kings, a bottom-feeder in the Pacific Division who are now entering a rebuild, hired Todd McLellan this offseason, and Kovalchuk still didn't fare much better with just three goals and nine points in 17 games before the Kings made him a healthy scratch for nearly six weeks and tried to trade him.

Ultimately, Los Angeles placed Kovalchuk on waivers in December, shortly after paying him a $2.65 million bonus. When no team claimed him, Kovalchuk became a free agent. He said he still had a desire to play in North America and wanted to sign with a contender for the rest of the season. Enter the Canadiens, who begin play Monday six points out of the final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference.

"We're giving him a great opportunity," Julien said, "and hopefully, he responds."

Kovalchuk was the No. 1 overall pick of the 2001 draft by the Thrashers and has played in 897 career NHL games, scoring 436 goals and 859 points.

Ranked No. 2 in the world, McIlroy will join 12 of the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Ranking in San Diego, including notable names such as Jon Rahm, Xander Schauffele, Justin Rose and Gary Woodland.

McIlroy, who has 18 PGA Tour titles to his name, finished T-5 in his Farmers Insurance Open debut last year.

In his first start of his Tour season, he won the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai, besting Xander Schauffele in a playoff.

The field is not yet final, as the commitment deadline is Friday, Jan. 17.

Several professional golfers are doing their part to raise money for those affected by the Australian bushfires.

Cameron Smith, Marc Leishman, Nelly Korda and Jessica Korda are among those who have pledged donations based on the number of birdies and eagles they make at upcoming tournaments.

Smith, who is from Brisbane, plans to donate $500 for every birdie and $1,000 for every eagle he cards at this week's Sony Open.

“Australia is burning, and I’m lost for words!” Smith wrote on Instagram. “Have personally had family members effected by the disaster, and it’s only the start of fire season. If anyone can donate, even the smallest amounts, clothes, blankets etc, it all counts… Everyone stay safe and my thoughts are with you!! Let’s make some birdies!"

Leishman, who was born in Warrnambool, will pledged the same amount during the Sony.

The Korda sisters, whose father Petr won the 1998 Australian Open in tennis, are promising $150 for every birdie and $300 for every they make during the LPGA's two-event Florida Swing, which begins next week in Orlando, Florida.

Nelly Korda said she'll donate based on her performance for her first three starts of the new season.

As of Saturday, the fires have burned nearly 6 million acres across Australia, including more than 3.5 million in New South Wales alone. Per CNN, 24 people have died, including several firefighters, while millions of animals have also been killed, including almost a third of the koala population of NSW.

FA Cup 4th round: Man City, Liverpool learn foes

Published in Soccer
Monday, 06 January 2020 13:12

Premier League leaders Liverpool, who fielded a virtual youth side and still beat Everton in the FA Cup third round on Sunday, will travel to either Championship side Bristol City or League One Shrewsbury Town in the fourth round following Monday's draw.

- Watch all FA Cup matches and replays on ESPN+ (U.S. only)

Bristol City, who drew 1-1 at home to Shrewsbury on Saturday, pulled off one of the great FA Cup shocks last time they faced Liverpool, winning a third-round replay 1-0 at Anfield in 1994 as a second-tier side, a result that led to the resignation of the Anfield club's boss Graeme Souness.

Shrewsbury had less luck in their only ever meeting with Liverpool, losing 4-0 at home in the fourth round in 1996. The Merseysiders last won the FA Cup in 2006.

Holders Manchester City host Fulham while Manchester United or Wolverhampton Wanderers, who drew 0-0 at Molineux on Sunday, will play last year's runners-up Watford or Tranmere Rovers, who came from 3-0 down to draw their third-round tie 3-3.

Arsenal, who have won the world's oldest cup competition a record 13 times, or Championship leaders Leeds United, who meet in the last remaining third round tie later on Monday, will be away to Bournemouth.

Burnley vs. Norwich City is the only guaranteed all-Premier League match-up among the fourth round fixtures, which will be played between Jan. 24-27.

Championship side Birmingham City have been drawn away at either Bristol Rovers or Coventry City but could play on their own ground if Coventry win the replay between the third-tier sides since the Sky Blues currently share St Andrew's.

Fourth round draw:

Bristol City or Shrewsbury Town vs. Liverpool

Watford or Tranmere Rovers vs. Wolverhampton Wanderers or Manchester United

Manchester City vs. Fulham

Rochdale or Newcastle United vs. Oxford United

Hull City vs. Chelsea

Bournemouth vs. Arsenal or Leeds United

Burnley vs. Norwich City

Southampton vs. Middlesbrough or Tottenham Hotspur

Northampton Town vs. Derby County

Brentford vs. Leicester City

Queens Park Rangers vs. Sheffield Wednesday

Portsmouth vs. Barnsley

Bristol Rovers or Coventry City vs. Birmingham City

West Ham United vs. West Bromwich Albion

Reading or Blackpool vs. Cardiff City or Carlisle United

Millwall vs. Sheffield United

Spurs: No evidence of Rudiger racist abuse

Published in Soccer
Monday, 06 January 2020 10:15

Tottenham say there is no evidence that Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger was racially abused during a Premier League match between the two sides at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last month.

"The club and the Metropolitan Police have now exhausted all avenues of investigation following the reported incident at our home fixture against Chelsea on 22 December," Spurs said in a release on Monday.

"We carried out extensive reviews of CCTV images and footage, working with professional lip readers. All materials and reports have now also been reviewed by the police who have carried out their own investigation.

"The police have notified us today that, having reviewed and investigated, they have closed the crime report as they can find no evidence to support the allegation of racial abuse.

"We fully support Antonio Rudiger with the action that he took -- however there is no evidence to corroborate or contradict the allegation and as such neither ourselves nor the police are in a position to take any further action."

Rudiger, a Germany international who is black, was involved in an incident in which Tottenham's Son Heung-min was red-carded in the 62nd minute and indicated shortly afterwards that he had been the victim of a monkey gesture from the home section of the crowd.

An announcement was made over the stadium PA in the second half, saying: "Racist behaviour among spectators is interfering with the game." It was the first time FIFA's protocol for dealing with discrimination at football games was implemented in England's top division. Two further announcements, timed at 10-minute intervals, followed.
