Best of: Social media moments in 2019

Published in Golf
Saturday, 30 November 2019 00:00

As social media becomes a bigger part of the golf world, nearly as many stories are coming from the online platforms as there are from on the course.

Some posts  are destined to be forgotten 15 minutes later. Others can turn into national news. Just remember that what goes on social media is forever, whether you hit the delete button or not.

From the rise of Phil Mickelson’s social media superstardom to Brooks Koepka’s transition into an Instagram model, here are the social media moments that stood out in 2019, in no particular order:

DO IT FOR THE 'GRAM, BROOKS!

We saw plenty of Koepka on and (especially) off the course this year. Koepka seemed to make just as many headlines stripping down for the cameras as he did on the PGA Tour, where he won the PGA and finished the year as world No. 1.

While he officially slimmed down for an ESPN the Magazine photoshoot, a move that drew the ire of Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee, Koepka showed off his slimmer figure on several occasions throughout the year, posing in plenty of provocative Instagram photos with girlfriend Jena Sims.

After a week at the at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson have opted for a vacation with their significant others in the tropical paradise of the nearby Maldives.

HALLOWEEN SPECIAL

Sticking with Koepka for a moment, is there anything the world No. 1 can’t do? Four majors in three years, Instagram (and real) model … upstaging Dustin Johnson and Paulina Gretzky at their own Halloween party?

Koepka pulled off the impossible this year in October, when he showed up to the DJ-Paulina bash as an iconic character from “Saturday Night Live” made famous by Justin Timberlake and Andy Samberg in the mid-2000s. While there were plenty of great costumes at the party, including those worn by the hosts, it appears Koepka just has a gift for this sort of thing.

MR. CONSISTENT

In stark contrast to his golf game in recent years, Mickelson completely dominated social media in 2019. After joining Twitter and Instagram in late-2018, Mickelson made up for lost time this year, with more viral hits than can be recounted here.

The 49-year-old used the platforms as a way to give swing tips in flip flops, show off his snow-skiing skills and, most importantly, take not-so subtle jabs at other players, like he did with Matt Kuchar at the Masters.

The only thing better than a drive down Magnolia Lane? Phil Mickelson’s commentary down Magnolia Lane.

Mickelson also launched a short-form interview/storytelling series of sorts called “Phireside with Phil,” and while every video wasn’t a home run, the punchline to his debut episode was undeniably funny.

NO CALF MUSCLE LEFT BEHIND

Mickelson’s surge to the top of golf social media also coincided with a dedication to getting in shape. What started as a bit about “getting calves like Adonis” after a photo of his eye-popping lower leg muscles went viral, Lefty jumped in with both feet, getting in the best shape of his life.

The five-time major winner refused to go into specifics, but he admitted to slimming all the way down to his college playing weight by the end of the year, which led to photos like the one posted on Twitter by his sister, of Phil - at least what's left of him - going shirtless in the ocean.

Tina, Phil Mickelson’s sister, has only tweeted five times in this calendar year. But she did so on Tuesday with a photo you have to see: Phil is ripped.

WIE AND FOWLER GET MARRIED ... TO OTHER PEOPLE

This just in, those at the top levels of professional golf tend to have nice things, including weddings. And that held true for two faces of the game this year, Michelle Wie ad Rickie Fowler.

The few photos that were posted from both weddings, that occurred within a couple months of each other, looked incredible and created all sorts of buzz on social media.

A big congratulations to the happy couples, with only a hint of jealousy.

IDEA ABOUT IDEAS

The European Tour social media team has been the gold standard when it comes to viral golf content for years now, and it was no different in 2019, when they racked up millions of views with a brilliant idea about … coming up with viral ideas.

The Euro Tour’s Content Committee was born in January, with Tommy Fleetwood, Henrik Stenson, Lee Westwood, Thomas Bjorn and Eddie Pepperell brainstorming some hilariously awful concepts.

The video was so good that it inspired several spin-offs and it’s probably a safe bet that you’ll see the Content Committee next year in some capacity.

LEXI TAKES A BREAK

As great as some aspects of social media are, there’s plenty of downside to so much instant access to the game’s biggest names. Look no further than LPGA superstar Lexi Thompson earlier this year. Thompson, who has more than 400,000 followers on Instagram alone, announced that she was taking a break from social media in April after the negative comments became too much to deal with.

“To read some of the hurtful things being said to me lately isn’t fair and I’m not dealing with it,” the 25-year-old wrote on Instagram.

Lexi Thompson is taking a break from her love-hate relationship with social media.

While the break was short-lived, it shows that sometimes it can be good for your mental health to put the phone down every now and then.

ALL THE PRESIDENTS MEN (AND WOMEN)

It has become rather commonplace since Donald Trump became President of the United States, but POTUS continued to tee it up with several of the games biggest stars in 2019, with photos and videos almost always making their way to social media.

Tiger Woods has recently played with Presidents Trump and Obama. But watching Jack Nicklaus putt was most impressive.

In addition to awarding Tiger Woods the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Trump played in a group with Woods and Jack Nicklaus early this year. He also hit the links with Lexi, John Daly and Pat Perez among others over the course of 2019.

SOCIAL MEDIA HAS HAD ENOUGH OF SLOW PLAY

Pace of play was a topic of conversation all year, and social media was no exception. If anything, players were louder about the issue on social media in 2019 than ever before.

With slow play questions following him from New Jersey to Illinois, Bryson DeChambeau had a colorful reply to those still hounding him about a putt he hit a week ago.

All of the comments would be impossible to collect here, but this year featured everything from Eddie Pepperell calling Bryson DeChambeau a “single-minded twit,” DeChambeau responding to the “haters” with a profane rant on Instagram and Edoardo Molinari tweeting out a list of players who have been put on the clock – and fined – on the European Tour, WGC and major events.

All this to say, if this trend of keyboard warriors continues, who knows what will change but the drama should only escalate exponentially.

JACK'D UP!

Jack Nicklaus doesn’t play much golf on TV anymore, but he had not one, but two(!), moments in the span of a week that went viral online and proved that the 18-time major winner’s still got it.

In September, the 79-year-old made two walk-off winners that social media couldn’t get enough, the second one in front of Kid Rock, because of course it was.

It was just a few short days ago that Jack Nicklaus confirmed that he’s still got it, and for his next trick, he's moved on to holing long chips to win events and a bunch of money for charity.

IT'S A WALK-OFF

Where else would the year's very best of social media moments end than with the guy who dominated social media in 2019.

Phil Mickelson had all sorts of clips go viral this year, but he only made one ace on the replica seventh hole at Pebble Beach in Jim Nantz' backyard.

As Mickelson put it so eloquently, that's how it's done!

MALELANE, South Africa – Pablo Larrazabal has kept his three-shot lead going into the final round of the Alfred Dunhill Championship.

Larrazabal's 2-under 70 Saturday in the third round of the European Tour's first tournament of the 2020 season put him 11 under par and kept him ahead of Wil Besseling (70). South African home favorite Branden Grace (71) is a shot further back in third on 7 under.

Larrazabal made five birdies but also three bogeys on another tough day at Leopard Creek Country Club, where players have faced scorching temperatures pushing 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) and gusting winds.

Those high temperatures convinced the tour to allow players to wear shorts in tournament play for the first time.

Charl Schwartzel is making a solid return after an eight-month injury layoff, with a 70 putting him 4 under and in a tie for sixth.

10-man Liverpool survive scare to go 11 clear

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 30 November 2019 09:07

Liverpool hung on after having goalkeeper Alisson sent off to beat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 and extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to 11 points thanks to two first-half headers from Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool, who also equalled their unbeaten top flight run of 31 games set between May 1987 and March 1988, have 40 points from 14 games, with second-placed champions Manchester City on 29 after they were held to a 2-2 draw at Newcastle United.

It was a nervy record-extending 14th successive Premier League win at home for Liverpool, who missed a string of chances either side of Van Dijk's double before they were forced to defend desperately in the closing stages.

The towering defender acknowledged Alisson's sending off was a blow ahead of Liverpool's Merseyside derby at home to Everton on Wednesday, which he will miss through suspension, and also praised Brighton.

"We should have done better," Van Dijk said.

"We put him in that situation but it is what it is. We have to deal with it. It is a disappointment but we go again.

"They [Brighton] are a good side. They play football and take risks. It's not easy. We should have gone better than we did in the second half but you have to give them credit as well."

Van Dijk opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a looping header after Trent Alexander-Arnold floated in a free kick from the right and the two combined again for the second goal six minutes later.

Brighton goalkeeper Mat Ryan denied Sadio Mane with a fine reflex save but was powerless when Van Dijk made his run to meet Alexander-Arnold's corner at the near post.

Centre back Lewis Dunk missed two chances to pull one back for Brighton, sending a shot wide from close range shortly before halftime and then glancing a header inches wide of the far post in the 54th minute.

Then came a frantic climax as Alisson was sent off in the 77th minute for handling the ball outside the penalty area.

While stand-in keeper Adrian was still yelling out instructions to the wall at the far post, Dunk took advantage and stroked a quick low free kick into the opposite corner.

Brighton pressed for an equaliser and Adrian parried an Aaron Mooy piledriver in the 85th minute as the home side held on, much to the delight of the packed crowd at Anfield.

Euro 2020: Germany, France, Portugal in Group F

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 30 November 2019 10:09

European champions Portugal have been drawn in the same group as the last two World Cup winners Germany and France.

Germany will meet France in their opening fixture in Group F, which will be broadcast live across ESPN networks from June 12-July 12.

England will kick off their campaign against Croatia at Wembley Stadium, and they have also been paired with Czech Republic.

Gareth Southgate's side were knocked out by Croatia at last year's World Cup semifinals.

Euro 2016 semifinalists Wales will face Italy, Switzerland and Turkey in Group A.

Group A: Italy, Switzerland, Turkey, Wales

Group B: Belgium, Russia, Denmark, Finland

Group C: Ukraine, Netherlands, Austria, Play-off Winner D (Georgia, Belarus, North Macedonia or Kosovo)

Group D: England, Croatia, Czech Republic, Play-off Winner C (Norway, Serbia, Scotland or Israel)

Group E: Spain, Poland, Sweden, Play-off Winner B (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Northern Ireland, Slovakia or Republic of Ireland)

Group F: Germany, France, Portugal, Play-off Winner A (Bulgaria, Hungary, Iceland or Romania)

Liverpool moved 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League table with a 2-1 win over Brighton at Anfield. The Reds seemed to be coasting to victory courtesy of two goals that were created by Trent Alexander-Arnold and finished by Virgil van Dijk.

But the home faithful were forced to endure another grandstand finish following Alisson's dismissal for a baffling handball. Lewis Dunk took advantage to tuck home the free kick with Liverpool switched off. From then on it was a nervy finale, but the hosts held on.

Positives

Liverpool made it 13 wins in 14 league games and extended their unbeaten run to 31 matches in the process. Vian Dijk, in particular, had a sensational individual performance, steering home two excellent headers to propel Liverpool to their best ever start to a Premier League season.

Negatives

The hosts were caught napping from Dunk's free kick and have now failed to keep a clean sheet in 12 league games and are yet to shut out the opposition at Anfield this season. This one came at an even bigger price, with Alisson's baffling handball ruling the Liverpool keeper out of next week's Merseyside derby.

Manager rating out of 10

6 -- Jurgen Klopp dropped Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain into midfield in the absence of the injured Fabinho, and he had a positive impact on the game, producing an energetic display and winning the free kick that allowed Alexander-Arnold to craft the opener.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best, players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Alisson, 5 - Competently beat away a decent Davy Propper strike with both hands, but will have been relieved to see his clean sheet still in-tact moments later after Dunk's shinned strike had the Brazilian scrambling. Shown a straight red in the 76th minute after a moment of madness which led to the Brighton goal.

DF Trent Alexander-Arnold, 8 - A brilliant attacking display. The young full-back produced some inch-perfect set-piece deliveries and grabbed his fourth and fifth assists of the season as a result, with the excellent Van Dijk twice the delighted recipient.

DF Dejan Lovren, 7 - Used his experience to get his body in the way of the troublesome Aaron Connolly and win a free kick for his side as the Irishman looked to make a nuisance of himself. Slightly fortunate to see Dunk's glancing header drop wide of the post, but it was a decent display from the Croatian.

DF Virgil van Dijk, 9 - The big Dutchman was a rock at the back again and sprayed the ball around like Kevin De Bruyne. He grabbed his second goal of the season with a placed, looping header into the far corner and helped himself to another with a bullet-header from another Alexander-Arnold delivery in an immense display.

DF Andrew Robertson, 6 - Fired over from a tricky half-volley on the edge of the box as Liverpool started brightly. Found his attacking freedom limited in the first half as the Seagulls fought their way back into the game, but provided more attacking support after the break with some dangerous crosses into the box.

MF Jordan Henderson, 6 - It seemed like the Liverpool skipper had one of his quieter afternoons, but that may be a little harsh on the midfielder who gets through so much work off the ball. Ran his socks off for the cause when his side were really up against it late on.

MF Georginio Wijnaldum, 6 - Bravely threw his body in the way of Propper's dangerous strike away to deflect the ball away just before the break. Looked to turn the screws with a surging run at the other end, but the Netherlands midfielder slightly overhit his pass as he looked to slip in Robertson.

MF Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, 8 - Saw his early shot blocked blocked following a darting run into the penalty area. Continued to stretch the visitors' defence and drew the foul that led to the opening goal. Stung the palms of Mathew Ryan following some remarkable work by Sadio Mane down the left.

FW Mohamed Salah, 6 - Involved in some nice link-up play with Roberto Firmino in the first half, but could only fire into the side-netting after taking a heavy touch. It was evident the Egyptian is still short of match-fitness, although he almost claimed an assist when he set up Oxlade-Chamberlain, who tested Ryan again with a powerful strike.

FW Roberto Firmino, 7 - A positive performance, but should have bagged himself a goal. The Brazil forward drew an excellent, instinctive save from the right-hand of Ryan with a venomous strike from the edge of the box. Was thwarted by the latter again, this time from close range after being picked out by Mane at the back post.

FW Sadio Mane, 8 - Showed unbelievable balance and energy to drive forward down the left and find Firmino, despite receiving a clip to the ankles. Should have got on the scoresheet when Oxlade-Chamberlain's deflected strike fell perfectly at the feet of the unmarked Senegal man, but Ryan saved superbly.

Substitutes

MF Adam Lallana, 6 -- Replaced Salah in the 69th minute. The midfielder found it tough to secure a foothold in the game. Showed nerves of steel to calmly nod back to his goalkeeper under huge pressure.

GK Adrian, NR -- Replaced Oxlade-Chamberlain in the 78th minute as a result of Alisson's dismissal for a bizarre handball. Left reeling after Dunk converted the resulting free kick while the Spaniard was still organising his wall.

FW Divock Origi, NR -- Replaced Firmino in the 76th minute as the Reds looked to put the icing on the cake, but he struggled to have an impact as Brighton ended the game strongly.

LIVE BLOG

13:29 ET: Spain head coach Luis Enrique, meanwhile, says he is "happy and satisfied" after his side were drawn alongside Poland, Sweden and the Path B play-off winners In Group E. "You never know what can happen," he adds.

13:22 ET: England manager Gareth Southgate reacts with characteristic diplomacy to his side's draw. He's wary of Croatia's talent-packed midfield and says that the Czech Republic, who beat England 2-1 in qualifying, are "much improved".

13:16 ET: Terrifying/tantalising though the prospect of France, Portugal and Germany being in the same group is, it's worth remembering that all three teams could still go through to the knockout phase. The top two teams will qualify from each group, along with the four best third-place teams.

13:09 ET: [Crocodile Dundee voice] You call that a group? This is a group.

13:05 ET:

13:01 ET: Thus concludes the Euro 2020 draw. As a reminder, we won't know the final, final line-up until March 31, when the play-offs have taken place.

Some juicy match-ups there, but the clear stand-out group is Group F: reigning world champions France, reigning European champions Portugal and three-time European champions Germany, plus one of Bulgaria, Hungary, Iceland or Romania. Phwoar.

12:54 ET: Finland discover their first ever group-stage opponents at a major tournament. They're in Group B with Belgium, Russia and Denmark.

12:51 ET: Now for the Pot 4 teams, which includes the four play-off paths. Wales complete Group A along with Italy, Switzerland and Turkey.

12:49 ET: WELL THEN.

12:47 ET: Sweden go into Group E, so that means Portugal go into Group F with Germany and France. There's your Group of Death folks.

12:46 ET: Group C for Austria, Group D for Czech Republic.

12:44 ET: Turkey join Italy and Switzerland in Group A.

12:42 ET: Poland to face Spain in Group E. And world champions France go into Group F with Germany! Did someone say groupe de la mort?

12:40 ET: Croatia go into Group D alongside England.

12:38 ET: The first moment of note in the draw as Switzerland are drawn in Group A alongside Italy.

12:35 ET: I'll level with you, the first part of the draw is quite boring. The teams in Pot 1 already know which groups they're in, so this first bit will only determine which slots in their groups they will occupy (which has a bearing on their fixtures). C2 for Ukraine, E1 for Spain and D1 for England, in case you're interested.

12:30 ET: OK, here we go.

12:28 ET: Iker Casillas, Philipp Lahm, Ruud Gullit, Francesco Totti, Karel Poborsky, Andrey Arshavin, John Sivebaek, Marcel Desailly and Theo Zagorakis are now also on stage. Some line-up.

Nice to see the goalkeepers and defenders - very much the nerds of top-level football - getting a moment in the spotlight as well.

12:25 ET: Portugal midfielder Joao Mario is on stage in Bucharest, reminiscing about how it felt to lift the Henri Delaunay Trophy in Paris in 2016. Former Portugal centre-back Ricardo Carvalho is helping out with the draw, so there is a strong Portuguese flavour to the evening's events.

12:19 ET: Spain coach Luis Enrique has taken his seat at ROMEXPO, the exhibition centre that is staging the draw. As he prepares to discover which countries will join his side in Group E, the row about the manner in which he took his job back from interim coach Robert Moreno rumbles on.

12:12 ET: "Please, tell us about the official tournament ball!" I hear you cry. That would be the Adidas Uniforia.

Whilst it may sound like a new brand of anti-bacterial kitchen cleaner, 'Uniforia' is in fact a portmanteau of the words 'unity' and 'euphoria'.

12:07 ET: Reminder that if you're in the US, you can watch the draw live on ESPNEWS and ESPN3. ESPN's networks will be the only place to catch all the action next summer.

12:03 ET: You'd get a decent five-a-side team from the national team coaches who are currently sashaying along the red carpet in the Romanian capital: Ronald Koeman, Luis Enrique, Roberto Mancini, Ryan Giggs...

And there's Gareth Southgate, who could hand the oranges out at half-time or something.

11:58 ET: With the draw nearly upon us, allow ESPN FC's Nick Miller to guide you through the runners and riders.

11:53 ET: No country's supporters will be anticipating the draw quite as keenly as Finland's, who saw their team qualify for their first ever major tournament earlier this month. The Finns, led by Teemu Pukki, will be in either Group A or Group B.

11:48 ET: If you're not yet familiar with the official Euro 2020 mascot, allow me to introduce you to 'Skillzy'.

Skillzy is a freestyle footballer, it says here, and as you can see for yourselves, he is absolutely terrifying.

11:43 ET: There's no shortage of stars in Bucharest for the draw. The UEFA pageantry will be getting under way in a little under 20 minutes.

11:39 ET: AND THERE'S MORE. With the play-offs that will decide the final four places at the tournament not taking place until March next year, we won't know the final, final line-up until March 31.

There are four play-off paths (one for each tier of the UEFA Nations League), each of which will feature two semi-finals and a final. The new structure means that one of the four Path D minnows - Georgia, Belarus, North Macedonia and Kosovo - will definitely make it to Euro 2020.

Spare a thought for Northern Ireland, who have to play both Bosnia AND Herzegovina in their Path B semi-final, which seems a little unfair.

11:35 ET: Group of Death, anyone? The seedings for the draw are based purely on performances in qualifying, which means that world champions France find themselves in Pot 2 and reigning European champions Portugal are lurking in Pot 3.

It means that one of Italy, England, Spain or Germany could end up in a group with both France AND Portugal. So much for the group phase being a foregone conclusion. You can read more about the seedings here.

11:29 ET: Cristiano Ronaldo will head into next year's tournament looking to help Portugal defend the title they won in France in 2016.

But as ever, he will have personal objectives in his sights as well. Here's ESPN FC's Mark Ogden on CR7's quest to become the greatest goal-scorer in international football history.

11:23 ET: The quirks of the draw mean that the identities of three of the four teams that will make up Group B are already known. Belgium, Russia and Denmark are all guaranteed to face each other, with the fourth and final slot in the group going to either Wales or major tournament newcomers Finland. Games in that group will be played in Copenhagen and Saint Petersburg.

Ukraine and the Netherlands, meanwhile, are already assured to be in Group C, which is the Amsterdam/Bucharest group.

11:18 ET: If you're in the United States, don't forget that ESPN will be the ONLY place to catch the action when Euro 2020 kicks off.

You can watch today's draw on ESPNEWS and ESPN3 and the tournament itself will be shown live in the US across ESPN networks next summer.

11:14 ET: Czechs ready? Check.

11:10 ET: That's right, there isn't just one host country for the 2020 edition - instead there will be TWELVE host nations, who will be drawn into groups in accordance with the host city pairings.

So which stadiums will host games?

Group A: Stadio Olimpico, Rome (Italy) and Olympic Stadium, Baku (Azerbaijan)

Group B: Krestovsky Stadium, Saint Petersburg (Russia) and Parken Stadium, Copenhagen (Denmark)

Group C: Johan Cruyff Arena, Amsterdam (Netherlands) and Arena Naționala, Bucharest (Romania)

Group D: Wembley Stadium, London (England) and Hampden Park, Glasgow (Scotland)

Group E: San Mames, Bilbao (Spain) and Aviva Stadium, Dublin (Republic of Ireland)

Group F: Allianz Arena, Munich (Germany) and Ferenc Puskas Stadium, Budapest (Hungary)

Round of 16: Wembley Stadium, London (England), Parken Stadium, Copenhagen (Denmark), Arena Naționala, Bucharest (Romania), Johan Cruyff Arena, Amsterdam (Netherlands), Aviva Stadium, Dublin (Republic of Ireland), San Mames, Bilbao (Spain), Ferenc Puskas Stadium, Budapest (Hungary), Hampden Park, Glasgow (Scotland)

Quarter-finals: Allianz Arena, Munich (Germany), Olympic Stadium, Baku (Azerbaijan), Krestovsky Stadium, Saint Petersburg (Russia), Stadio Olimpico, Rome (Italy)

Semi-finals and final: Wembley Stadium, London (England)

11:05 ET: The first thing to say about today's draw is that it is sensationally confusing, chiefly because the qualified countries of the tournament's 12 host cities all have to be drawn to play at home in the group phase and because we still only know the names of 20 of the 24 finalists.

If you've been scratching your head over the various permutations, allow ESPN FC's resident human super-computer, Dale Johnson, to make sense of everything with his handy guide.

11:00 ET: Hello, hello and WELCOME to ESPN FC's live coverage of the Euro 2020 draw, which gets under way in an hour in Bucharest.

I'm Tom Williams and I'll be your guide for the next few hours to see how Europe's top national tournament shapes up.

The new golden hand: Lin Yun-Ju

Published in Table Tennis
Saturday, 30 November 2019 07:29

The no.7 seed, he accounted for Sweden’s Kristian Karlsson, the no.15 seed (11-8, 11-4, 11-7, 4-11, 11-9), prior to recording a quarter-final success in opposition to Brazil’s Hugo Calderano, the no.4 seed (5-11, 11-4, 11-6, 11-6, 11-3), the first round winner against Kanak Jha of the United States.

Occupying the no.16 seeded position; the Brazilian had to recover from a three games to one deficit to ensure success (9-11, 9-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-7, 11-5, 11-8). In what is now seven meetings in the international arena, it is the closest Kanak Jha has come to beating Hugo Calderano; we look forward with baited breath to the Universal 2019 ITTF Pan America Cup in Puerto Rico next February.

A fine effort from the 19 year old American but it was the one year younger, Lin Yun-Ju who held centre stage.

Memories of Anton Stipancic

Once again sheer talent shone; playing over the table, in the modern era, he is the match of anyone. He is the new “golden hand”, the name given to the late Croatian, Anton Stipancic, likewise left handed, in the 1970s and 1980s he represented the country then known as Yugoslavia with the greatest of pride.

It was his deft touches, incredible skill that thrilled crowds worldwide. Lin Yun-Ju is now doing exactly the same.

Youngest player

A semi-final place for Lin Yun-Ju means that he is the youngest player, competing in his first Men’s World Cup, ever to reach the semi-final stage. However, he is not the youngest player ever to reach the penultimate round, he is not the first player on debut to reach the last four and he is not the first from Chinese Taipei.

Significantly, all involved in the equation, were very much involved on the second day of play.

Lin Yun-Ju beats Fan Zhendong as youngest semi-finalist on debut by 163 days. Playing in his first ever World Cup tournament in 2015 in Halmstad, Fan Zhendong was 18 years and 268 days old, when he reached the semi-final stage on Saturday 17th October. Lin Yun-Ju is 18 years and 105 days old.

A favour from Timo Boll

Several players have reached the semi-final stage on their first appearance, it is not unusual but one name stands out, Timo Boll won on debut in 2002 in Jinan city. Furthermore, it was Timo Boll who prevented Tomokazu Harimoto becoming the youngest ever player on debut to reach the last four; last year in Paris, the German ended the Japanese teenager’s hopes at the quarter-final stage (9-11, 11-3, 13-11, 11-5, 11-9).

However, less than two hours prior to the quarter-final success recorded by Lin Yun-Ju; after beating Nigeria’s Quadri Aruna, the no.11 seed (11-7, 13-11, 12-10, 6-11, 11-6), Tomokazu Harimoto accounted for colleague Koki Niwa, the no.8 seed (11-6, 11-7, 10-12, 10-12, 12-14, 11-3, 11-8). Thus at 16 years and 156 days old, he becomes the youngest ever semi-finalist at a Men’s World Cup.

Third attempt

A first semi-final appearance for Chinese Taipei? Not so, Chuang Chih-Yuan tried 15 times but never progressed beyond the quarter-finals. However, on his third appearance in 2001 in Courmayeur, Chiang Peng-Lung, after finishing ahead of Austria’s Werner Schlager and Sweden’s Peter Karlsson on games ratio in the group stage, with Egypt’s Ahmed Ali Saleh in fourth place, beat China’s Ma Wenge to reach the last four.

The journey was ended by the champion elect, Vladimir Samsonov of Belarus, who in Chengdu competed in his 18th Men’s World Cup; thus he equals Sweden’s Jan-Ove Waldner and Belgium’s Jean-Michel Saive in having the most appearances in the competition.

Chiang Peng-Lung is now the Chinese Taipei national coach.

Semi-finals

At the semi-final stage, Tomokazu Harimoto meets the senior citizen, 31 year old Ma Long, Lin Yun-Ju confronts the ageing 22 year old Fan Zhendong. Maybe because their advancing years should we allow Ma Long and Fan Zhendong two “time outs” per match?

Focused Ma Long and Fan Zhendong both ended German hopes. Ma Long accounted for Frenchman, Simon Gauzy, the no.12 seed (11-7, 11-8, 9-11, 11-5, 8-11, 15-13), before overcoming Dimitrij Ovtcharov, the no.9 seed (6-11, 11-9, 11-4, 13-11, 11-3).

Fan Zhendong prevailed against Austria’s Daniel Habesohn, the no.19 seed (11-8, 13-11, 11-7, 11-2), before accounting for Timo Boll, the no.5 seed (11-6, 11-9, 11-5, 7-11, 12-10).

Play in Chengdu concludes on Sunday 1st December.

FONDA, N.Y. – Fonda Speedway officials have announced the Fonda 200, which returned this year for the first time in nearly two decades, will again be on the track’s schedule next season.

The Fonda 200 returned in September as a three-day racing festival highlighted by the $53,000-to-win, 200-lap big-block/small-block modified event.

For 2020, the Fonda 200 weekend is back and is even more lucrative.

Fonda Speedway’s BD Motorsports Media LLC management team has announced the 2020 edition of the 200 weekend will take place on Sept. 17-19.

Once again, the Sunoco Modifieds will race 200 laps for $53,000-plus to win. The Fonda 200 will offer $1,000 to take the green flag for each of its 40 starters, pushing the total pay structure to more than $130,000 prior to special awards and bonuses.

“We were thrilled with the energy, buzz and excitement the 200 brought to Fonda Speedway last season,” Fonda promoter Brett Deyo said. “Our entire team stepped up to the plate and put together a weekend fans are still talking about.

“This season, we are going even bigger by increasing the start money to $1,000. With the boosted payout and a complete resurfacing of the track with new clay, this event should be even more attractive and attainable to Modified competitors around the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.”

The weekend schedule of events will be similar to the ’19 edition.

Thursday night (Sept. 17) will be reserved for trailer and camper parking with open practice for teams on the half-mile track.

On Friday (Sept. 18), Sunoco Modifieds will take part in 15-lap qualifying events. Also on the docket: CRSA Sprint Cars, Pro Stocks, Street Stocks and Four Cylinder Cruisers.

Saturday (Sept. 19) is reserved for Crate 602 Sportsman, Sunoco Modified Last Chance events and the 200.

Stewart Friesen put his name on the Fonda 200 win list with his conquest in last September’s event. Friesen crossed the Sunoco checkered flags ahead of track champion Rocky Warner, Mike Mahaney, Billy Decker and Brett Hearn.
