David Miller guides chase as Durban stay in contention

Published in Cricket
Saturday, 30 November 2019 06:46

Durban Heat notched up their second win in the 2019 MSL to move into fourth place on the table and remain in the mix for the playoffs. The Nelson Mandela Bay Giants suffered their second defeat of the competition, but they still remain in the top three. The Heat completed a second successful chase in three days: after hunting down 182 against Cape Town Blitz at Newlands on Thursday, they successfully chased 174 here at Kingsmead.

No third man damages Dala

Junior Dala is the MSL's second-leading wicket-taker but also one of the most expensive bowlers in the competition and his opening over would not have helped. Wihan Lubbe took 28 runs off it, all in boundaries, and three of them thanks to an absent third man. First, Lubbe cut Dala over the slips for four and then an outside edge flew there. The third ball was a pulled over deep backward square leg and the fourth edged over gully, where a fielder had still not been installed. Another six over backward square leg followed before Lubbe drilled Dala down the ground for four and put the Heat's chase on track.

Miller down but battles on

David Miller has a reputation for being a finisher, which only sometimes turns into reality for South Africa. But, for the second match in succession, he saw the Heat home, this time despite a groin injury which required on-field treatment and a let-off. Miller's running between the wickets was unaffected even though he went down during his innings and his resolve was equally intact despite being put down on 38 by Beuran Hendricks in his follow-through. Miller went on to score 50 off 39 balls, sharing in useful partnerships with Alex Hales and Dane Vilas to put the Heat on the brink, then a 28-run fifth-wicket stand with Ravi Bopara to close out the game with seven balls to spare.

Best figures in MSL 2019, again

Less than 24 hours after Roelof van der Merwe bagged the best figures in this year's edition of the MSL, Keshav Maharaj equaled his effort. South Africa's Test spinner showed he is not just a red-ball player after single-handedly pulling the Giants back from a strong start, scoring 66 without loss in the Powerplay. Maharaj (who bowled the first over) was brought back on immediately after the fielding restrictions ended and struck with his second ball when Ben Dunk tried to hit him over his head but was caught on the boundary. In his next over, Maharaj bowled Jason Roy, who missed a reverse-sweep, and had Heino Kuhn caught at backward square leg, attempting a conventional sweep, for a duck. Maharaj's final over cost only three runs to see him end with figures of 3 for 15 in four overs and pull the Giants' run rate to under eight an over.

Captain Smuts fits the bill

Jon-Jon Smuts was withdrawn from the South Africa T20 squad to tour India over conditioning concerns but has used this tournament to show that he is fit and firing as the new international season looms. His 54 off 37 balls was his second half-century of the tournament and took him to second on the run charts, behind Janneman Malan. Smuts shared in a 20-ball, 42-run fifth-wicket stand with Marco Marais, to ensure the Giants scored a total over 170.

Sources: Mizzou fires Odom after 4-year tenure

Missouri fired coach Barry Odom on Saturday, a day after the team completed its season at 6-6, sources told ESPN.

Odom went 25-25 and 13-19 in SEC play during four seasons at his alma mater, where he served as defensive coordinator before being promoted to succeed Gary Pinkel after the 2015 season. Missouri started 5-1 this fall before dropping five consecutive games. The Tigers beat Arkansas on Friday.

PowerMizzou.com first reported the news.

The NCAA on Tuesday upheld a postseason ban and other sanctions against Missouri, where a former tutor for the football team and other teams at the school admitted to completing coursework for student-athletes. Athletic director Jim Sterk strongly criticized the NCAA for upholding the ban, which he called "a really hurtful decision that's a blow because it impacts so many student-athletes."

Odom, a former Tigers linebacker, began working for the football staff in 2003 and spent 10 of the next 13 seasons in various roles before being elevated to head coach. Former athletic director Mack Rhoades hired Odom, and Sterk was hired in August 2016. Odom went 4-8 in his first season before guiding Missouri to consecutive bowl appearances and 4-4 records in SEC play.

Sterk hired two head coaches, Bill Doba and Paul Wulff, during a decade as Washington State's athletic director. He also promoted Rocky Long to head coach at San Diego State while serving as AD there.

Kitchens seen wearing 'Pittsburgh started it' shirt

Published in Breaking News

A post on social media Friday night shows Cleveland Browns coach Freddie Kitchens wearing a "Pittsburgh started it" T-shirt -- a reference to the Browns-Steelers brawl that led to an indefinite suspension for Cleveland defensive end Myles Garrett and more than $730,000 in fines.

A Browns spokesman told ESPN's Adam Schefter that Kitchens' daughters gave him the shirt "as a joke" and that he wore it to see the film "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood" with his family. The Browns said Kitchens did not intend for anyone to see it and "understands it's not a good look."

GV Art & Design, which sells the shirt, was among those posting the image of Kitchens wearing the shirt while posing for a photo with another man.

Garrett was suspended indefinitely and fined $45,623 for ripping off and swinging Mason Rudolph's helmet, hitting the Steelers quarterback in the head with it during Cleveland's 21-7 victory Nov. 14. Two other players -- Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey and Browns defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi -- also received suspensions, and a total of $732,422 in fines to 33 players and both teams were handed out.

The movie features Tom Hanks playing famed television personality Fred Rogers. One Steelers official told Schefter that Kitchens' decision to wear the T-shirt could be viewed as more disrespectful, given that Mr. Rogers was from Pittsburgh.

The Browns and Steelers meet for the second time this season on Sunday.

On Monday, Kitchens had said he wanted his players to focus on the game and avoid any "fluff" surrounding it.

"I want them to go in with one thing and one thing only on their minds, and that is to do their job, and anything that overshadows that in any way is not acceptable and it is not the best for the team," Kitchens said in a conference call. "I want guys to show up ready to do their job. All of that other stuff is just fluff. It is just fluff to give people things to talk about leading up to Sunday."

Source: WR Pryor stabbed, in critical condition

Published in Breaking News

Free-agent receiver Terrelle Pryor is in critical condition following surgery after he was stabbed Friday night at his apartment, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Pryor was stabbed in the chest and shoulder, according to the source.

The incident took place at the Heinz Lofts apartment complex in Pittsburgh, according to WTAE-TV.

An unidentified woman is in police custody, according to the station.

Pryor, 30, entered the league in 2011 and has played with the Oakland Raiders, Cleveland Browns, Washington Redskins, Buffalo Bills and New York Jets.

He hasn't played this season after he was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars in September.

NEW YORK -- Black Friday offered NBA fans in the Big Apple a rare treat: the chance to take in two games in one day.

Between the Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets playing at Barclays Center on Friday afternoon and the Philadelphia 76ers and New York Knicks squaring off at Madison Square Garden on Friday night, fans could -- if they chose -- take in four of the five Atlantic Division teams simply by taking a quick subway ride.

We did just that -- and, in the process, got a chance to take a snapshot look at all four of them as the NBA season is 20% complete. Here's what we saw:

In the middle of a timeout during the Celtics-Nets game, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving stood on the court laughing and joking with one another.

Unfortunately for the Nets, though, they did so wearing suit jackets and slacks.

But while Durant, Irving and Caris LeVert continue to sit out with injuries, Brooklyn earned a 112-107 victory over Boston thanks to standout showings from Spencer Dinwiddie and Jarrett Allen -- the kind that allow the Nets to hope they can continue their recent hot streak once they begin to get their big names back on the court.

The Nets are now 6-2 without Irving after Friday's win -- a stretch during which Dinwiddie has taken on the challenge of being the team's lead playmaker with aplomb.

"Just continuing to progress every year," said Dinwiddie, who had 32 points and 11 assists Friday and is averaging 24.5 points and 7.8 assists since Irving left the lineup. "I was just trying to strike a balance tonight between passing and scoring and figure out my role as it continues to shift around when we get healthy and aren't injured."

Dinwiddie has played alongside Irving plenty so far this season, too -- just as he did alongside D'Angelo Russell last season -- and that will continue once Irving comes back. Dinwiddie's size and length at 6-foot-6 make him a perfect complement to Irving.

Allen, though, will not be playing next to DeAndre Jordan, the man he's alternated time with this season -- which is why his play during this streak, in which he's averaged 15.6 points and 12.6 rebounds while shooting 72.5% from the floor, has the Nets so excited about what lies ahead.

"[Nets coach] Kenny [Atkinson] challenged him in film one game to not be as up and down, but to just be up, and to play at that level," forward Garrett Temple told ESPN. "'We see that you can and we need you to be at that level to be successful,' and he's taken that challenge head on and he's been amazing.

"I think he understands what he can do, and he's stepped into that role. 'I can be this dominant inside and my team needs me to be dominant so I'm going to be dominant like that.'"

The Nets still have plenty to sort out. The offense will inevitably look different whenever Irving comes back -- which, after he returned to on-court work Friday, appears to be getting closer. LeVert's return will come a couple weeks after that. But, as they wait for those guys to return, the Nets have to feel good about what they are seeing in their absence.

On the first two possessions of the second half of Celtics-Nets, Boston center Daniel Theis missed a short runner in the lane, then watched Allen go right past him for an offensive rebound and a putback dunk.

Celtics coach Brad Stevens had had enough. Enes Kanter checked into the game for Theis 33 seconds into the third quarter, and Theis remained anchored to the bench for the remainder of the game.

"He was available," Stevens said when asked about Theis after the game.

"We've talked about it all year, we're going to have a rotating center spot. Now that Enes is getting healthier, I thought that Enes was really good in the first half, and so we went with Enes early."

Later, in reference to a question about Allen, Stevens made his true feelings known.

"I think we started three of the four halves we played in the last three days with a Jarrett Allen dunk," Stevens said, "which is not a good way to start from the Celtics' [point] of view."

Theis has been a significant part of why Boston has gotten off to such a strong start, but his benching Friday was just the latest example of the game of musical chairs Stevens has been playing with his supporting cast all season, in an effort to find usable rotation pieces.

So far, it has been a mostly barren pursuit.

Of the players behind the team's perimeter stalwarts -- Kemba Walker, Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, Gordon Hayward and Marcus Smart -- the one option who has been serviceable is Brad Wanamaker, who has capably handled the team's backup point guard minutes. But Grant Williams and Carsen Edwards -- two of the team's three rookies drafted among the top 33 picks in June -- have struggled mightily. The third, Romeo Langford, made a 14-second cameo Oct. 30 and hasn't been seen in a game since. Semi Ojeleye, a third-year forward, remains an at-best inconsistent spot-up shooter on the perimeter.

The struggles by the rookies have stood out. After going 0-for-2 against the Nets, Williams is now just 12-for-49 (24.5%) from the field -- including 0-for-21 from 3-point range. There might not be a person better suited to dealing with such a slump, however, than Williams, who is equally both a sunny personality and a very confident one. But that can do only so much.

"Sometimes, you just miss them," he said, referring to his oh-fer streak from 3-point range. "But eventually they'll start falling, and I feel like they'll fall when the team needs them, especially. So I've got the utmost confidence in it to keep shooting them and let it fly."

Edwards also isn't shy. He also has struggled mightily. He is now 23-for-73 (31.5%) on the season, and 14-for-43 from 3-point range. More than half of his total made baskets this season came in just two games, against the porous defenses of Washington and Cleveland. Take out those two games and Edwards is shooting 20% (11-for-55) overall and 20.6% (7-for-34) from 3.

"It's a tough adjustment," Edwards said Friday. "I'm still trying to learn. At the end of the day, I'm just learning and trying to do the best I can."

The same can be said for all of Boston's young players. And, at 13-5, the Celtics are exceeding expectations. But for a team that has aspirations of a deep playoff run, these final rotation spots all bear watching.

During a timeout in the fourth quarter at Madison Square Garden, the in-arena camera showed singer Mary J. Blige sitting on celebrity row as her song "Family Affair" blared through the arena's speakers.

The Knicks' season, however, hasn't exactly been percolating.

The Knicks built up a 16-point first half lead Friday, only to watch it immediately evaporate after halftime. The far more talented Sixers, who looked completely unmotivated in the first half, decided it was time to wake up and start playing, and went on to win 101-95.

Losing a big lead to the 76ers for the second time in two weeks isn't nearly as disconcerting as the haphazard way the Knicks are progressing through this season.

New York is tied with the Atlanta Hawks for the worst record in the Eastern Conference at 4-15. But it appears the team is still more focused on trying to win than trying to see what it has in its young players. That is the only explanation for Kevin Knox, the No. 9 pick in last year's NBA draft, getting a DNP-CD Friday night.

"The flow of the game," Knicks coach David Fizdale said afterward when asked why Knox didn't play.

"But by no means is Kevin buried. He's going to have to fight his way out of it. I got a lot of confidence that he will."

There isn't a ton of evidence thus far in his career that Knox is going to be a good NBA player. He is shooting 38% from the field this season (though, to be fair, he's also shooting that from 3-point range, where it is a respectable mark). But whether there is evidence or not should be irrelevant for a Knicks team that wasn't expected to be competitive this season by anyone outside the organization.

The team's goal should have been to find out what it has in Knox, Mitchell Robinson, RJ Barrett and Frank Ntilikina. Nothing should get in the way of that -- especially after the dreadful start should have eliminated from the equation the faint notion that this team would be good.

But, in Fizdale's defense, this is the position the team put him. After a loss to the Cavaliers earlier this month, team executives Steve Mills and Scott Perry -- at the behest of owner James Dolan -- held an impromptu news conference and declared, "We think the team is not performing to the level that we anticipated or we expected to perform at, and that's something that we think we collectively have to do a better job of delivering the product on the floor that we said we would do at the start of this season."

There is still plenty of time for the Knicks to shift their priorities to the things that should matter: fully focusing on the development of those young players. Until they do, however, an ugly season will only continue to get uglier.

Simmons, Embiid lead 76ers' comeback win vs. Knicks

Joel Embiid racks up a game-high 27 points and 17 rebounds while Ben Simmons adds 15 points and eight assists as the 76ers beat the Knicks 101-95.

There is one theme that has been consistently obvious about Philadelphia's start to its season, and it was on display again Friday, even in a halfhearted victory over an overmatched Knicks team. It's been something Sixers coach Brett Brown has said repeatedly, including before Friday's game: The offense has to catch up with the defense.

The numbers bear that out. The Sixers now have the NBA's third-best defensive efficiency, and are within a half-point of having the top-ranked unit. Offensively, however, Philadelphia ranks just 18th in the league.

"We just really have to find our flow," forward Tobias Harris said. "We have to move our bodies a little more and just execute.

"Some games we do one of the three, or two of the three. But when it's good, and we're clicking, it looks real good. We're not going to be perfect, but we have some strides to make at that end."

It was always going to be a work in progress for the Sixers at that end of the court. Unlike almost every other team in the league, the Sixers are relying on size and strength to produce points, rather than spacing and shooting. It's a mix that is going to need time to be sorted out.

But there are signs that it will work. That starting five, in the limited minutes it has played together, has impressed, outscoring opponents by 21.3 points per 100 possessions. But the fact that the group has appeared in only nine of Philadelphia's 19 games -- and for a total of 102 minutes -- is a familiar development. The Sixers had similar issues getting their best players on the floor together last season.

"I feel like we got into a good flow," said guard Ben Simmons, who had 15 points and eight assists Friday. "There's ups and downs, which happens, but we're kind of finding it."

There have been flashes of what the Sixers can be -- like their opening night win against the Celtics and last Saturday's demolition of the Miami Heat, both coming in Philadelphia. The 13-6 record isn't bad, either. But there's still much work to be done if the Sixers are going to be the team they hope to become.

Wales women beaten by Barbarians

Published in Rugby
Saturday, 30 November 2019 05:37

Wales women's autumn series ended in defeat by the Barbarians despite a spirited second-half comeback.

Jo Yapp's Baa-Baas did all the damage in the first half, running in five unanswered tries.

Wales responded through Lisa Neumann, Keira Bevan and Alex Callender but could not claw back the deficit.

The game was the first of a historic double header at Principality Stadium, with more than 12,600 fans there before the men's game (14:45 GMT).

Under a closed roof in Cardiff, Wales went into the game with momentum having beaten Ireland, Scotland and Crawshays, but rarely left their own half in the first 40 minutes.

The Barbarians, coached by Yapp and Wales' Rachel Taylor, were picked from 10 nations and showed the attacking flare synonymous with their brand.

The tourists opened the scoring through New Zealand's Charmaine McMenamin. The number eight finished off a move started by a cheeky through-the-legs pass by fellow Black Fern and 2017 World Cup winner Eloise Blackwell.

They were in again straight after the restart, with Dyddgu Hywel coming out of international-level retirement to tear down the wing and score against her former Wales team-mates.

Scotland's Lauren Harris, also persuaded to brush off her boots, latched onto a floated pass to cross for the third as pressure mounted on the home defence.

Ireland duo Jenny Murphy and Anna Caplice added their names to the scoresheet to round off a one-sided half.

Wales fight back after the break

Wales came out firing after the break, boosted by breaks from autumn debutant Paige Randall, who has been a revelation on the wing, and returning scrum-half Bevan.

But it was Neumann who found the whitewash to keep up an impressive international scoring record on the wing, holding off defenders to touch down in the tightest of spaces at the corner.

Bevan, who had been lively all match, got her reward 10 minutes from time, taking advantage of the blind-side, while Callender stole a late interception to score in front of a cheering crowd.

Despite the outcome, Wales will be encouraged by the number of new players blooded during the autumn campaign.

With head coach Rowland Phillips taking some time away, 14 players were given debuts, half of which came in this match.

Wales coach Coach Gareth Wyatt told BBC Sport Wales:

"I'm so pleased for the group with the way they've conducted themselves and shown how tight they are in that second half.

"The autumn campaign is about developing depth in the squad and we've achieved that with three wins from five.

"It was a huge test today against some of the best players in the world, so it's also a benchmark of where we want to get to.

"In the Six Nations we know how strong England and France are, that's the sort of level that game today was at, and we're going in the right direction in closing that performance gap."

Broken Axle Can’t Stop Anton Hernandez

Published in Racing
Saturday, 30 November 2019 05:37

VADO, N.M. – Anton Hernandez refused to quit on Friday at Vado Speedway Park.

Hernandez clipped an infield tire with three laps to go in the Griffin’s Propane Non-Wing feature, lost the lead, then got the lead back on the final lap as his left-front tire dangled in the wind to claim victory on night one of the Turkey Bowl.

“I guess I just needed to give myself a challenge,” said Hernandez with a laugh. “I can’t thank everyone enough for getting me here to race this weekend. I still don’t know how I held on to it, much less finished, but that was a crazy finish.”

Trailing the lead the opening laps, Hernandez pulled even with early race leader Kyle McCutcheon several times, but was not able to take the point. Dropping to third on Lap 5, Don Grable took over the runner-up spot in traffic and began closing on McCutcheon for the lead. Caution on Lap 8, the restart saw Grable shoot to the lead as McCutcheon swapped his line.

Short-lived, however, Grable snagged a rut in the fourth turn, giving Anton Hernandez the run and the lead. Surviving numerous cautions, and finally, the busted front axle, the race for the lead was three deep with Charles Davis Jr. nearly getting by Hernandez and Grable with Grable holding onto second by inches at the line. Charing forward 14 positions, Rick Ziehl grabbed fourth with Josh Hodges in fifth.

In other action, Johnny Herrera was the winner of the 305 winged sprint car feature.

Herrera Cowboys Up During Vado’s Turkey Bowl

Published in Racing
Saturday, 30 November 2019 05:38

VADO, N.M. – With nearly an inch of rain dropping on the Vado Speedway Park surface prior to the inaugural Turkey Bowl, wily veteran Johnny Herrera rode the ruts and flew threw traffic to grab the win in his first visit to the southern New Mexico oval on Friday.

“I’m really glad my family was able to be here tonight. They don’t get to see me race very often, and I have to thank Royal Jones. This is his engine in the car, and without him, we couldn’t be here,” said Herrera after winning the Lucas Oil POWRi 305 Winged Sprint Car feature.

Chasing the lead early, slower traffic and a rut played to the advantage of Herrera to work around early race leader, John Carney II who hooked the rut in the first turn; nearly sending the No. J2 into the fence. Taking advantage, Herrera shot between the bouncing No. J2 and slower traffic. Back after the No. 45x with Wes Wofford also in the mix, the trio worked for several laps with anyone in position to win.

Getting some breathing room through the mid-point of the feature, Herrera’s advantage began to disappear as Carney worked the low line of the Vado Speedway Park. Diving the bottom with seven laps to run, a little too much steam sailed the No. J2 hard into a rut, sending Carney flipping from the bottom of the first turn to the top of the second turn. John was ok.

Putting Wes Wofford to second with Buddy Tubbs in third, the chase was on with Herrera working middle to top to hold off the late-race charge of Wes Wofford. Colorado’s Buddy Tubbs grabbed third with Kyle McCutcheon picking up seven spots to fourth. Working from the 16th starting spot, Lorne Wofford made it up to fifth.

In other action, Anton Hernandez overcame a broken axle in the final laps to win the 360 non-winged sprint car feature.

Michael Page Gobbles Up $5,000 Payday

Published in Racing
Saturday, 30 November 2019 05:46

COCHRAN, Ga. – Michael Page inherited the lead from Michael McDowell and went on to win night one of the Gobbler 100 for super late models Friday at Cochran Motor Speedway.

McDowell dominated the first 25 laps, but a sour engine sent him pitside and handed the lead to Page on the 26th lap. Page would lead the remainder of the 30-lap distance to collect a $5,000 payday.

The race was originally scheduled for 40 laps, but was shortened to 30 laps by event organizers.

Austin Horton finished second, followed by Brandon Overton, Steven Roberts and Ahnna Parkhurst. Parkhurst was victorious in the companion crate late model feature.

Anderson Claims S-X Open Supercross Championship

Published in Racing
Saturday, 30 November 2019 05:54

MELBOURNE – American Jason Anderson claimed the prestigious Monster Energy S-X Open International FIM Oceania Supercross Championship, with Justin Brayton and Chris Blose claiming the Australian Supercross Championships on Saturday at Australia’s Marvel Stadium.

Luke Clout started off the night in perfect fashion, as he laid down the fastest lap in the Boost Mobile Superpole. When the SX1 Finals came around, Brayton kicked things off positively with a win, however his title rival Clout ran into drama straight away, going down multiple times to finish way down the order.

Anderson claimed the race two victory over Brayton and did so again in the third main, granting him the S-X Open International FIM Oceania Supercross Championship and Brayton the Australian Supercross Championship.

“I’m stoked I got the win – the last few weeks have been so tough, so to get this championship means a lot. I love this country, thank you so much for welcoming me, and I hope that I’ve done your country proud coming over here and winning four straight,” commented Brayton.

For Anderson, claiming the FIM Oceania Championship is a big tick off the list, and something that’ll reside front and centre on the trophy mantle.

“This title is sweet, it’s rad I was able to get it done. The track was slick, racing was tight, but my Rockstar Husky was locked in. Thanks to all the AME boys for putting this on. I love coming down under, and really plan on doing it for sometime to come,” commented Anderson.

The SX2 Class was once again full of insane racing, with the Triple Crown offering up some incredible action that resulted in Honda’s Mitchell Oldenburg taking the overall victory. In P4 was Australian prodigy Jett Lawrence, who claimed two Knobby Holeshots.

The star of the show however in SX2 was American Chris Blose; as he took home the Australian Supercross Championship.

“Oh man; I can’t explain this. I’m so pumped, the Penrite Honda team worked so hard for this, I did too, and we walk out of here with a number one plate. Thanks to everyone involved, it’s a dream come true to be crowned champion,” commented Blose.

Jordan De Goey took out the Yamaha Celebrity Challenge, as he put his previous motocross skills to the test and eventually stretched his lead to five seconds in the two-lap affair. His AFL rival, Jack Riewoldt, finished in second to last, with 2019 Supercars Champion Scott McLaughlin claiming the wooden spoon.

The Polyflor International showdown was taken won by the Australian Team, with Dan Reardon, Clout and Reed taking out the USA trio of Anderson, Josh Hill and Ricky Carmichael.

“I made a career out of passing Ricky in the whoops, so I knew that when that’s what it was going to come down to, I made it happen and flew down the inside,” commented Reed post race.

The Monster Energy Best Trick contest saw Melbourne young gun Jayo Archer land his first double backflip in competition, and subsequently, the crowd decided he deserved the gold by popular demand. For Boost Mobile Best Whip, Tyler Wakeford beat some heavy hitters to take gold.
