ALTON, Va. – Virginia Int’l Raceway officials have revealed the track’s lineup of events for the upcoming season, with 10 events schedule for April through November.

The season features several returning fan-favorite races, including the NASA Mid-Atlantic HyperFest, IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, Heacock Classic Gold Cup and more.

The season begins with the Hoosier Tire SCCA Super Tour taking place April 10-12, where drivers of multiple classes racing towards the SCCA championship will get to test their skills. In May, VIR’s schedule is stacked with the MotoAmerica Championship of Virginia followed by HyperFest.

Known as an “Automotive Amusement Park,” HyperFest is an annual motorsports festival featuring road racing, drifting, karting, live music performances and much more. The family-friendly weekend also gives racing fans the chance to put their own cars to the test on VIR’s 3.27-mile road course.

August brings one of VIR’s biggest races of the year – the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, Aug. 21-23. The weekend features non-stop action, family-friendly entertainment and high-speed racing, including the headlining Michelin GT Challenge race, where drivers reach top speeds close to 190 mph.

Just a few weeks later, vintage cars and sportscar legends will take over the track during the Heacock Classic Gold Cup weekend Sept. 24-27, which includes the SVRA Vintage Race of Champions Charity Pro-Am race.

“We are thrilled to announce yet another exhilarating race schedule this year at VIRginia Int’l Raceway,” said Connie Nyholm, owner and CEO of VIR. “Fans are in for an action-packed lineup of high-energy races, including events they know and love like the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and HyperFest. We’re looking forward to a great season on the track and can’t wait for the fans to experience all VIR has to offer.”

MotoGP Testing Begins In Valencia

VALENCIA, Spain – Two days after the MotoGP season finale, riders were back on track at Circuit Ricardo Tormo for the first day of testing ahead of the upcoming season.

Fabio Quartararo, fresh off completing his rookie season for Petronas Yamaha SRT, turned 76 laps and set the fastest time of the day at 1:30.163 despite a crash at speed in turn 10. He was testing a new carbon swingarm along with chassis parts.

Maverick Viñales was second fastest at 1’30.327 for Monster Energy Yamaha. The Spaniard spent the day working on tire consumption, his riding style, his rhythm and to take the new prototype YZR-M1 out for a spin.

Franco Morbidelli was third fastest on the second Petronas Yamaha SRT, followed by Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso and MotoGP champion Marc Marquez.

It was a rough day for Repsol Honda, as Marc Marquez and his new teammate, younger brother Alex Marquez, both crashed. Neither was injured and both were able to continue. Bradley Smith also crashed in turn nine, but managed to return to the track later in the day.

Lucas Oil Backing Kyle Larson’s Midget Entry

Published in Racing
Tuesday, 19 November 2019 12:01

MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Lucas Oil has extended its support of Kyle Larson Racing to include sponsorship of Kyle Larson’s self-owned No. 1k midget.

Lucas Oil will be featured on Larson’s midget in six events in addition to continuing to serve as an associate sponsor on the Kyle Larson Racing No. 2 driven by Carson Macedo with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series.

Lucas Oil will sponsor Larson’s No. 1k midget beginning with this week’s Hangtown 100 at Placerville (Calif.) Speedway and the November Classic at Bakersfield (Calif) Speedway in addition to the Turkey Night Grand Prix at Ventura (Calif.) Raceway, the Gateway Dirt Nationals at the Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis, Mo., and the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals in Tulsa, Okla.

“Dirt racing has played a pivotal role in the success of Lucas Oil and I’m thrilled that we are able to take our partnership with Kyle Larson Racing to the next level,” said Lucas Oil Director of Motorsports Tom Bogner. “I first met Kyle 10 years ago when he was racing sprint cars in Australia and I’ve always been impressed with his talent, commitment and dedication to the dirt racing community. I have no doubt that Kyle will continue to be both successful on the track and a terrific ambassador for the sport off of it and we are proud to once again be a part of his team.”

Lucas Oil had previously partnered with Macedo in Joe Gaerte’s No. 3G since 2017 and joined Kyle Larson Racing at the beginning of this season when the duo took over as driver and crew chief of the KLR No. 2. Lucas Oil was also an associate sponsor on the Silva Motorsports No. 57 winged sprint car piloted by Larson.

“Lucas Oil has been involved in grassroots racing for several years and I am excited to have them extend their partnership with KLR,” said Larson. “Dirt racing is a big part of my career and to have Lucas Oil support not only our World of Outlaws team with Carson [Macedo] but to join the midget program as well is pretty special.”

Exhausted Kupcho accomplishes goal, ready for break

NAPLES, Fla. – The goal for Jennifer Kupcho was to get to the CME Group Tour Championship. Now that she’s here, a big part of her can’t wait for it to end.

Even for a 22-year-old fresh out of college, Kupcho has every reason to be worn out.

“I’m looking forward to the end of the tournament,” Kupcho said. “I’m excited to play in it. It was my goal after I made it into Asia events, to get into the CME. But I’m definitely tired.”

An NCAA champion as a junior, Kupcho is best known for her back-nine charge to win the Augusta National Women’s Amateur the Saturday before the Masters. The performance was so memorable that Golf Channel has produced a one-hour retrospective to be shown Nov. 26.

Equally impressive is what brought her to Tiburon Golf Club.

Kupcho qualified for the LPGA tour last year and deferred her membership until she finished her career at Wake Forest. She was No. 700 in the women’s world ranking when she made her pro debut May 30 at the U.S. Women’s Open.

That was the start of 18 tournaments over the next five months, one fewer event than Nelly Korda played all year. The only tournament Kupcho missed was a 54-hole event in Arkansas. She also got a three-week break in September around the Solheim Cup.

While she didn’t win, Kupcho had enough big weeks – mostly her runner-up finish in the final major, the Evian Championship – to make just over $500,000, be No. 38 in the 60-player field at the Tour Championship and move to No. 52 in the world.

The hardest part?

“The stress of wanting to get my card back and having such little time to do it,” Kupcho said. “My body got tired very quickly. I wasn’t used to playing that much.”

Adding to the difficulty were all the new courses to learn. Kupcho routinely would play a practice round on Tuesday followed by the pro-am, meaning she spent six out of seven days on the golf course for 18 weeks.

Perhaps it was no coincidence that two of her best finishes – a tie for fifth in the Marathon Classic and a tie for second at Evian – were tournaments she had played before as an amateur. Her other top-10 was two weeks ago when she tied for fourth at the Toto Japan Classic. She attributed that to fatigue, having played all four events on the Asia swing to assure a spot in Naples.

“Once I got to Japan, I wanted to come home,” she said. “I think that’s why I played so well.”

Her rookie season ends, but the work continues. Kupcho will spend part of her offseason moving to Arizona, close enough to her roots in Colorado and the headquarter of equipment sponsor Ping.

Maradona out after just two months at Gimnasia

Tuesday, 19 November 2019 10:31

Diego Maradona has resigned as coach of Argentinian first division club Gimnasia La Plata after two months in charge and the club on the brink of relegation.

Gimnasia sit 22nd in the table with Maradona winning three and losing five times out of his eight games.

Maradona's decision to quit his post comes after Sunday's announcement by Gimnasia president Gabriel Pellegrino that he will not run for reelection. Pellegrino has been at the helm since 2016 and the Argentina legend's resignation is perceived by the local media as an act of loyalty to the club president.

"Maradona is no longer the coach of Gimnasia," Pellegrino told Radio La Red. "He said that he was there to add not to subtract."

The presidential elections are held every three years and will take place on Saturday. Maradona had considered remaining in charge for the last three games of the year but has decided to relinquish the reins immediately.

Pellegrino was responsible for bringing the 1986 World Cup winner back to work in Argentina for the first time since 2010, when Maradona left the helm of Argentina's national team.

Argentinian newspaper Clarin report that Maradona is also going through a difficult personal time and also has health issues.

Earlier this month, Maradona, 59, played down concerns about his health and stated he was "more alive than ever". Maradona left his job as coach of Mexican side Dorados de Sinaloa in June after nine months in charge to focus on his health. He underwent a knee operation before deciding to take the Gimnasia job on Sept. 5.

After Sunday's game against Arsenal, Gimnasia play away to Banfield on Nov. 29 before hosting Cordoba on Dec. 8.

"Regrettably domestic results at the end of last season and beginning of this season have been extremely disappointing.

"It falls to the Board to make the difficult decisions -- this one made more so given the many memorable moments we have had with Mauricio and his coaching staff -- but we do so in the club's best interests."

Assistants Jesus Perez, Miguel D'Agostino and Antoni Jimenez have also been relieved of their duties, the club confirmed.

Pochettino, who moved to Spurs from Southampton in May 2014, led the London club to the final of the UEFA Champions League last season, where they fell to 2-0 Liverpool in Madrid.

Australia is finalizing an agreement with Philadelphia 76ers coach Brett Brown for him to return as the Aussies' national team coach, sources told ESPN.

Brown will coach the Aussies in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on a roster that could include Sixers All-Star Ben Simmons.

The Australian team includes several NBA players, including Utah's Joe Ingles and Dante Exum, Cleveland's Matthew Dellavedova and San Antonio's Patty Mills.

Brown was previously head coach of the Australian national team from 2009-2012, including a quarterfinals berth in the 2012 London Olympic Games. Brown had been an assistant coach for the Aussies from 1995 to 2003, including the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games.

He coached 14 years in the Australian professional league before joining San Antonio as an assistant in 2002. Brown is in his seventh season as the Sixers' coach, which has included consecutive trips to the Eastern Conference semifinals.

French pair Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert came from behind to win a deciding doubles tie in a 2-1 victory over Japan at the Davis Cup finals.

The Australian Open champions beat Ben McLachlan and Yasutaka Uchiyama 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 7-5 in a dramatic third set.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat Uchiyama 6-2 6-1 in the opening singles match before world number 10 Gael Monfils lost 7-5 6-2 to Yoshihito Nishioka.

Last year's runners-up France take on Serbia on Thursday.

On a more positive note for Japan, leading singles player Kei Nishikori, who was ranked eighth in the world in October when he underwent surgery on his right elbow, posted a video of himself on social media holding a racquet "for the first time" since picking up the injury.

Elsewhere in Group E, the Netherlands - Great Britain's opponents on Wednesday - lost 2-1 to Kazakhstan after Robin Haase and Jean-Julien Rojer were beaten 6-4 7-6 (7-2) in the deciding doubles match by Alexander Bublik and Mikhail Kukushkin.

Haase, ranked 163rd in the world, had earlier come from behind to beat Bublik 7-5 3-6 7-6 (7-5) in his singles match after Dutch compatriot Botic van de Zandschulp lost 6-2 6-2 to Kukushkin.

And in Group C, Argentina beat Chile 2-0 thanks to victories from Guido Pella and Diego Schwartzman in both singles matches.

Pella, ranked 25th in the world, beat Nicolas Jarry 6-4 6-3 in the opening match of the day on centre court before Schwartzman's 6-2 6-2 win over Cristian Garin.

"It's the end of the season but I think I played one of the best matches for sure of the year, maybe in my career," said Schwartzman. "I think Guido [Pella] helped me a lot to be more confident and I played unreal tennis."

Eighteen nations are split into six groups of three, with the group winners and two best-placed runners-up progressing to the quarter-finals.

The two semi-finals will be played on Saturday, 23 November with the two winners going through to the final on Sunday, 24 November.
