ATP Finals: Alexander Zverev denies using his phone during match

Alexander Zverev has denied using his phone during his match against Stefanos Tsitsipas at the ATP Finals.

Zverev was asked about the incident at a news conference after he was seen touching something in his bag at a changeover during Wednesday's defeat.

The 22-year-old German, who lost 6-3 6-2 at London's O2 Arena, said: "I don't know what they saw, but it was definitely not a phone."

Rules state players cannot access any electronic devices during matches.

"My phone was in the locker room. I always leave it there," added Zverev.

Asked what he might have been touching, he said: "I mean, a water bottle? Empty water bottle maybe?"

England, Spain and Denmark impress on opening day

All the leading names on duty in the opening phase of play, Jocefina Haagensen beat Emine Ernst of the Netherlands, the no.4 seed (11-5, 11-6, 11-2), Ana Pedregosa accounted for Chile’s Mariam Ruiz, the no.7 seed (11-13, 11-6, 11-6, 11-9); likewise Luisa Pintos prevailed against Portugal’s Joana Lopes (11-9, 11-5, 11-6).

Jocefina Haagensen, Ana Pedregosa and Luisa Pintos duly remained unbeaten to top the group; Emine Ernst and Joana Lopes finished in second positions and thus advanced to the main draw. Alas for Miriam Ruiz it was third place and thus farewell.

Biggest surprise

Surprise first places but the biggest top spot surprise was in the initial stage of the junior girls’ singles event achieved by Romania’s Patricia Ianau. In her opening contest she beat Portugal’s Bruna Marcelino in straight games (11-8, 11-3, 11-6) but on her next visit to the table lost to Tunisia’s Fadwa Garci, the no.3 seed, in four games (11-2, 7-11, 11-6, 11-4).

However, in the first match in the group, Fadwa Garci had experienced a five games reverse when confronting Bruna Marcelino (6-11, 11-8, 11-6, 7-11, 11-4). Thus games ratio determined the outcome; it was first place for Patricia Ianau (4:3) followed by Fadwa Garci (5:4) and Bruna Marcelino (3-5).

Further unexpected first positions

An unexpected first place for Patricia Ianau; lower down the order it was the same for Portugal’s Matide Pinto and Patricia Santos. Notably, Matilde Pinto beat Chile’s Natasha Ruiz, the no.12 seed (11-4, 13-11, 11-4); Patricia Santos overcame Dobrila Jorgueseska of the Netherlands, the no.14 seed (11-6, 11-6, 11-8). Dobrila Jorgueseska duly finished in second position and thus advanced to the main draw, for Natasha Ruiz it was fourth place and farewell.

Surprise outcomes but at the very top of the list there was no surprise at all; Egypt’s Hana Goda and Hungary’s Helga Dari both ended the day without defeat at the head of the order.

Recorded first round wins

Meanwhile, in the junior boys’ singles, the top 16 names were not required to compete in the group stage; Miguel Angel Pantoja and Joshua Weatherby emerged the players to underline their quality. Both finished in first positions in their respective groups prior recording first round wins.

Joshua Weatherby beat Portugal’s José Magalhaes the highest rated player in his group (11-7, 11-7, 7-11, 11-6); likewise Miguel Angel Pantoja overcame Ethan Walsh, like Joshua Weatherby from England (11-7, 11-9, 11-7). Success in the group stage, in the opening round, Miguel Angel Pantoja beat Portugal’s Guilherme Paulo (11-6, 11-4, 16-14, 11-5); Joshua Weatherby ended the hopes of Puerto Rico’s Jadriel Villanueva (10-12, 7-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-1, 11-9).

Leading names in doubles action

The leading names, Croatia’s Ivor Ban, Chile’s Nicolas Burgos, Italy’s John Oyebode and Moldova’s Vladislav Ursu commence their quest for honours in round two on the second day of play.

However, they were involved on the opening day as play proceeded to the semi-final stage of the junior boys’ doubles event. In the penultimate round Ivor Ban and colleague Lovro Zovko meet John Oyebode and compatriot Tommaso Giovanetti; Spain’s Miguel Nuñez and Arnau Pons face the French pairing of Denis Dorcescu and Felix Lebrun.

Highly rated names through to the junior boys’ doubles semi-finals; it is the same in the junior girls’ doubles event. Hana Goda and Farida Badawy face Fadwa Garci and Spain’s Claudia Canay; England’s Mollie Patterson and Millie Rogove confront Helga Dari and Faith Tung of the United States.

Play in the junior boys’ singles, junior girls’ singles, junior boys’ doubles and junior girls’ doubles events concludes on Thursday 14th November.

Benedikt Duda, named at no.46 on the current world rankings beat Korea Republic’s Lee Sangsu, listed at no.18 (11-8, 7-11, 11-5, 11-9, 3-11, 11-9) to reserve his place in the main draw.

Outstanding from Benedikt Duda, it was the same from Aliaksandr Khanin; standing at no.146, he accounted for Denmark’s Anders Lind (12-10, 11-9, 6-11, 12-10, 9-11, 11-5) and Romania’s Ovidiu Ionescu (11-4, 11-7, 9-11, 11-9, 7-11, 4-11, 11-7). On the current world rankings, Anders Lind is at no.103, Ovidiu Ionescu at no.63.

Excelling expectations, it was the same for Mizuki Oikawa, ranked no.99. He ousted Germany’s Qiu Dang, listed at no.93 (11-6, 6-11, 11-9, 11-8, 5-11, 10-12, 11-9) to reserve his main event berth.

Swedish Open champion departs

Similarly, Zhou Yu, who stands at no.112 and Zhao Zihao at no.41, raised the eyebrows. In the concluding preliminary round Zhou Yu beat Russia’s Alexander Shibaev (11-7, 11-6, 7-11, 12-10, 11-6); Zhao Zihao overcame colleague, Wang Chuqin the winner earlier this year in the first week of October in Sweden. On the current world rankings, Alexander Shibaev stands at no.57, Wang Chuqin at no.15.

Surprise qualifiers and there were more; Slovenia’s Darko Jorgic, Germany’s Ruwen Filus, alongside Japan’s Maharu Yoshimura and Korea Republic’s An Jaehyun all reserved places in the main event contrary to status.

Unexpected names advance

Meanwhile, in the women’s singles qualification tournament, according to ranking, China’s Zhang Rui and Qian Tianyi in addition to Korea Republic’s Choi Hyojoo were the major unexpected names to advance.

In the concluding preliminary round, listed at no.73 on the current order of merit, Zhang Rui accounted for Germany’s Shan Xiaona, named at to no.65 (7-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-5, 11-2); at no.71 Qian Tianyi beat Wu Yue of the United States at no.37 (11-5, 11-7, 11-8, 14-12). Likewise, Choi Hyojoo ended the hopes of Japan’s Saki Shibata (11-6, 11-9, 11-6, 11-8). Presently Choi Hyojoo is listed at no.68, Saki Shibata at no.30.

Impressive from young aspiring players, it was the same from Monaco’s 31 year old Yang Xiaoxin. Following success against Romania’s Elizabeta Samara, the 2015 European champion (11-6 11-5, 9-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-5), she accounted for Slovakia’s Barbora Balazova (11-5, 11-4, 11-5, 9-11, 11-9) to reserve her main draw place. On the current world rankings, Yang Xiaoxin is at no.57, Elizabeta Samara at no.28, Barbora Balazova at no.41.

Unexpected there were more in the preliminary rounds of the women’s singles event; China’s Gu Yuting, Germany’s Nina Mittelham and Chinese Taipei’s Cheng Hsien-Tzu topped booked main draw places against the odds, as did the Japanese duo of Miyuu Kihara and Minami Ando.

England in evidence

Surprise outcomes, in the final preliminary round of both the men’s doubles and women’s doubles events, the second highest rated pair experienced defeat; England very much in evidence.

In the former Paul Drinkhall and Sam Walker beat Korea Republic’s An Jaehyun and Jang Woojin (8-11, 4-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-6); in the latter Tin-Tin Ho partnered Austria’s Karoline Mischek to success against Poland’s Natalia Bajor and Natalia Partyka (9-11, 11-7, 11-4, 11-6).

The main event commences on Thursday 14th November

The top 12 qualification positions for Zhengzhou have already been filled in both the men’s and women’s singles events, there remain four places available per category, meaning that a number of players will need to impress in Austria in order to secure their tickets to the Grand Finals.

Alongside the drama of the race to Zhengzhou, the 2019 Austrian Open also promises to boast a series of eye-catching showdowns, featuring several of the biggest names in international table tennis.

New World no.1 in action and potential clash of past champions

Returning to the World no.1 spot earlier this month, Fan Zhendong (CHN) is top seed for the men’s singles event in Linz but will face stiff opposition if he is to make it back-to-back singles titles on the ITTF World Tour after glory at October’s German Open.

If he successfully negotiates his opening round encounter against Mizuki Oikawa (JPN), Fan could face a possible scenario which would see him need to topple the likes of Jang Woojin (KOR) and Lin Yun-Ju (TPE), while Timo Boll (GER), Jun Mizutani (JPN), Dimitrij Ovtcharov (GER) and Tomokazu Harimoto (JPN) are all potential semi-final opponents.

Boll and Mizutani’s interests are concerned with more than just silverware in Linz with both players still looking to reserve their tickets to the upcoming ITTF World Tour Grand Finals. The German and Japanese legends – currently positioned 15th and 13th respectively – will qualify if they match the progress of the chasing pack, namely Jang Woojin (KOR), Wong Chun Ting (HKG) and Koki Niwa (JPN). However, if any two of the three chasers reach the quarter-finals and Boll or Mizutani succumb to a round one exit then qualification will elude them.

The other side of the draw could produce a spectacular quarter-final contest between two of China’s finest with 2017 Austrian Open champion Lin Gaoyuan lined up to meet 2018 champion Liang Jingkun, while Hugo Calderano (BRA) could potentially lie in wait for the semi-finals.

The Brazilian star will need to negotiate an intriguing first round contest against Kanak Jha (USA) after the American hot shot sealed his first ever main draw appearance at an ITTF World Tour Platinum event, just one week after leading the USA men’s team to an historic quarter-final at the Team World Cup in Tokyo.

“I am happy, but not that surprised, as I am always focused on my tactics and very self-confident. There are more and more young American talents emerging these days and we want to make table tennis bigger and better in the USA. There are good clubs now, especially in California. I am playing in Grenzau, Germany, so I can learn the European way of playing the sport. I hope that we will keep growing and be strong and proud at the 2021 World Championships in Houston, USA.” – Kanak Jha

Women’s road to Zhengzhou intensifies and fond memories for Mima Ito

The race for the remaining women’s singles places at the ITTF World Tour Grand Finals also takes centre-stage in Linz. He Zhuojia (CHN), Hitomi Sato (JPN), Cheng I-Ching (TPE) and Jeon Jihee (KOR) are currently in pole position to claim qualification, but if two suffer round one elimination and two of the challengers in Gu Yuting (CHN), Doo Hoi Kem (HKG) and Suh Hyowon (KOR) progress to the semi-finals then the situation changes.

Out of the list of competitors heading to Linz, Japanese teenage star Mima Ito is the most recent Austrian Open champion of those participating, having tasted success in Linz in 2016.

Located in the lower section of the draw, Ito could be presented with a tricky quarter-final encounter against the experienced Cheng I-Ching – who eliminated Ito from last year’s World Tour Grand Finals in Incheon – while 2019 World and Women’s World Cup champion Liu Shiwen (CHN) is also a potential semi-final opponent for the 19-year-old Ito.

Speaking of the Women’s World Cup there is a chance of a repeat clash between top seed Zhu Yuling (CHN) and Feng Tianwei (SGP), one month on from their intense semi-final duel in Chengdu.

From Linz to Zhengzhou to Tokyo… eyes on the doubles!

Fresh from their men’s doubles heroics over Team China in Tokyo, Jeoung Youngsik and Lee Sangsu (KOR) are the top-seeded pair in Linz, however the Korea Republic aces could cross swords with the likes of Timo Boll and Patrick Franziska (GER) or Fan Zhendong and Wang Chuqin (CHN) in the semi-finals.

In the women’s doubles, the host nation’s Sofia Polcanova (AUT) will play alongside Bernadette Szocs (ROU). The competition’s other mixed nationality pairing of Barbora Balazova (SVK) and Hana Matelova (CZE) would be their likeliest opponents in the quarter-finals.

There is plenty of interest and intensity around the mixed doubles competition following news that the four semi-finalists in Zhengzhou will qualify directly to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Lining up in Linz are some blockbuster pairings: Wong Chun Ting and Doo Hoi Kem (HKG), Jun Mizutani and Mima Ito (JPN) and Lin Yun-Ju and Cheng I-Ching (TPE) to name just a few.

Live and kicking in Linz!

Sources: NFL won't give Kap reps list of attendees

Published in Breaking News
Wednesday, 13 November 2019 16:10

The NFL will not provide a list of personnel executives and coaches who will attend Colin Kaepernick's workout Saturday to the quarterback's representatives, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Sources earlier Wednesday told ESPN that the NFL had agreed to give the Kaepernick camp a list of attendees. However, an NFL source later told ESPN that the league never promised to provide that list.

Although multiple teams have confirmed that they will attend the workout, none has identified by name who will be going.

Several high-level NFL executives reached out as a courtesy to Kaepernick's representatives to say they couldn't attend and were caught off-guard and confused by the purpose of the NFL scheduling the workout.

The NFL informed its clubs Tuesday that a private workout would be held for Kaepernick on Saturday in Atlanta. It is set to include both on-field work and an interview with the quarterback, who has been out of football since 2016, the year he began protesting police brutality and racial injustice by kneeling during the pregame national anthem.

Sources previously told ESPN that Kaepernick and his reps were alerted to the workout at 10 a.m. Tuesday, ahead of a 4 p.m. ET personnel notice the league sent to teams. When notified, the quarterback's reps asked for the workout to be on a Tuesday, which typically is when NFL workouts take place because head coaches and general managers can attend more easily. On Saturday, almost half of the NFL teams will be traveling to games, and most of the rest of the coaches and players will be heading to their team hotels to prepare for games the next day.

But the NFL said the workout had to be on a Saturday, sources previously told ESPN. When the league was asked whether it could be the following Saturday -- by making it this Saturday, the 32 teams had only about three days to decide whether to attend and whom to send -- the NFL said no and didn't provide a reason.

Sources previously told ESPN that the league office also said none of the 32 teams had been made aware of the workout before the memo was sent. When Kaepernick's representatives asked whether a team or teams had asked for the workout, the NFL league office said, "We can't tell you that," the reps explained.

Because of the mystery around the workout and because none of the teams had been informed before Tuesday, Kaepernick's representatives began to question the legitimacy of the workout and the process and wonder whether it was a public-relations stunt by the league, sources previously told ESPN. The representatives asked the league office for a list of personnel executives and coaches who would be attending the workout because GMs and head coaches make personnel decisions, particularly given how important the quarterback position is.

As things stand now, the NFL has decided not to provide that list.

The Kaepernick workout remained a hot topic Wednesday across the league.

Coaches for the Miami Dolphins, Detroit Lions, Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers said they expected to have a representative at the Falcons' practice facility on Saturday. In addition, John Elway told 9News that the Denver Broncos will be represented, and a Washington Redskins spokesman said that organization would be there. A source told ESPN's Ed Werder that the Dallas Cowboys also plan to be at the workout.

Carolina Panthers safety Eric Reid, who was the first player to join Kaepernick in taking a knee during the pregame national anthem to protest social injustice while both were with the San Francisco 49ers, said Wednesday that "it feels disingenuous" that the NFL would schedule a workout for the QB on Saturday.

"I'll believe it when I see it," Reid said Wednesday. "At this point, it feels like a PR stunt."

Bucks send Giannis' older brother to G League

Published in Basketball
Wednesday, 13 November 2019 17:08

MILWAUKEE -- The Bucks have assigned Thanasis Antetokounmpo, the older brother of reigning MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, to the G League.

Milwaukee announced Wednesday that Antetokounmpo and Dragan Bender had been assigned to the Wisconsin Herd.

Despite snow storms in the forecast, Giannis Antetokounmpo made the 90-mile drive to the Herd's home game in Oshkosh to watch his brother play Wednesday night. The Bucks were off.

Thanasis Antetokounmpo, who signed a two-year, minimum contract with Milwaukee during the offseason, has appeared in one game for the Bucks this season. He had two points, two rebounds and one assist in six minutes in a 123-91 win at Orlando on Nov. 1.

Bender has yet to play for Milwaukee. He started the first two games of the season for the Herd and averaged 19.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.5 blocks, 1.0 assist and 1.0 steal in 29.9 minutes per game.

Both are expected to be in uniform for the Herd on Wednesday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Hayward: Injury rehab not as daunting this time

Published in Basketball
Wednesday, 13 November 2019 16:45

BOSTON -- Gordon Hayward didn't know exactly what happened when he ran into LaMarcus Aldridge late in the second quarter Saturday night, but he knew something wasn't right.

"You always think about the worst-case scenario," Hayward said Wednesday night when he addressed the media for the first time since undergoing surgery to repair a fracture of the fourth metacarpal in his left hand before the Boston Celtics hosted the Washington Wizards at TD Garden.

"Certainly on the play, I didn't know exactly what happened. But I heard it and felt it, and knew something immediately was wrong. That's why I signaled, 'Let's go check this out.'"

It turned out Hayward, 29, would need surgery, which he successfully underwent late Monday afternoon in New York. While he will have to sit out for approximately another six weeks because of it, Hayward said he was relieved his absence wouldn't be significantly longer.

"It's hard to know [how long you'll be out]," Hayward said. "After looking at the X-ray, it was clear as day that it was broken. Nowadays, you don't know what that necessarily means ... it depends on where the break is and how long it can be.

"I'm just happy that I relatively got good news, and I shouldn't be that long."

Hayward has been Boston's most consistent player to start the season, averaging 18.9 points, 7.1 rebounds and 4.1 assists in eight games this season for the Celtics, while shooting 55.5% overall and 43.3% from 3-point range. He has been praised by scouts who've seen him play in the early going and has benefited from an offseason fully dedicated to working on his body and game, rather than rehabbing as he was last summer.

That rehab was necessary because of the extended absence Hayward dealt with from the gruesome leg and ankle injuries he suffered six minutes into his first game as a Celtic -- the season opener of the 2017-18 campaign in Cleveland against the Cavaliers. That injury led to two different surgeries and the better part of a year battling just to get back onto the court -- followed by an uneven 2018-19 season as he tried to shake the rust off from his extended time away.

After going through that, Hayward admitted that this recovery -- while certainly not fun -- isn't nearly as daunting to have to face.

"It's a drop in a bucket for sure," he said. "Obviously frustrated. It's going to ... it sucks watching, and not being able to go out there and play, especially with the start that we've had.

"I think this time around, I'll be able to run around, use my legs still, maintain my conditioning, which I'm very thrilled about, and then be around the team, too. And kinda stay involved, which is good."

Hayward was sporting a colorful splint -- as well as being adorned with stickers of puppies and unicorns -- thanks to the artistic talents of his daughters. But he said he was happy that he didn't have to wear a cast, and that he'll be going back to New York on Friday to make sure everything is healing as expected. But he said he was happy about the fact it was his left hand, so he could continue shooting while he's out, and that he can also keep his conditioning in place while he waits to return to the court.

He also said that a pin and plate were put in his hand in order to help speed the process up -- and even cracked a joke about that being a good thing, after he needed a second surgery on his ankle last year.

"They put a pin and a plate in there, but that supposedly makes it stronger and makes it heal faster," he said, before adding with a smile, "I think that's a good thing this time around."

As for how long Hayward will actually be out, he said he isn't focusing on a timetable, but rather sticking to the plan the Celtics have laid out for him to recover and get back on the court.

"I think we'll take it, as cliché as it sounds, we'll take it day by day and week by week," he said. "It's one of those things that once the bone is healed, then it's kind of how much can you tolerate and how well does my body handle with the swelling, kind of how well it takes ramping up activities and doing different basketball things.

"Honestly, looking at the plan that we set up today and just kind of attacking each day. Hopefully I'll be back sooner rather than later."

Kawhi to play Wed.; PG-13 likely to debut Thu.

Published in Basketball
Wednesday, 13 November 2019 16:10

HOUSTON -- Kawhi Leonard will play against the Houston Rockets on Wednesday in the first of a back-to-back set, and Paul George is expected to make his LA Clippers debut on Thursday at New Orleans.

Clippers head coach Doc Rivers ruled George out before the game against the Rockets and said the All-Star swingman probably will play his first game this season against the Pelicans, barring something unexpected.

"Maybe tomorrow or whenever we play after that," Rivers said of George, who is making his way back after having offseason surgeries on both of his shoulders.

Rivers said Leonard was ready to go against the Rockets but did not commit to the All-Star's status against New Orleans. In the Clippers' two previous back-to-back sets of games, Leonard sat out the first game due to load management for a patella tendon injury in his left knee. This is the first back-to-back set in which Leonard is playing in the first game.

Rivers admits that it has been more challenging than expected to not only incorporate two new stars on the team but also adjust to not having one for the first 11 games of the season and having the other sit twice already.

"Honestly, it has probably been harder than we thought because we are still in the process of getting Kawhi right 100 percent, and then you don't have Paul at all," Rivers said. "Then you have a select few practices, and you have to make a choice every practice: Do you put Paul in the lineup even though he's not playing, but then you got to play tomorrow with another group, or do you put Paul in the second group, and we have chosen the second group, even the third group at times. I don't think he's yet to play even one minute with the starting lineup yet. It's just going to take time."

Rivers has been running three to four plays designed strictly for George every day in practice, despite not having George available in games in preparation.

"We'll figure it out," Rivers said. "It will take time, especially late-game stuff, ATO stuff, but you'll take it. You'll just take the talent. You know no matter what, you can run a play for Paul George. No matter what, you can run something for Kawhi. What I don't know is the rotations, the lineups that we can throw out on the floor.

"They are similar in the way they play. Paul comes off of more pin downs and screens, which actually adds to your offense because guys that do that create an offense in itself. JJ Redick, we used him running around and [also] Ray Allen [in Boston]. But it also created another offense for everyone else because of that, and Paul George can do that as well."

George, who had surgery in May to repair a partially torn tendon in his right shoulder and another procedure to repair a partial tear of his left labrum a month later, went through his first full live practice on Saturday.

"My shoulders haven't been this good in a long time," George told ESPN in early October during Clippers training camp. "I shot the ball pretty well last season, so I'm excited for what's to come."

Giants' Kapler: 'I was naive' during 2015 incident

Published in Baseball
Wednesday, 13 November 2019 16:55

SAN FRANCISCO -- New San Francisco Giants manager Gabe Kapler said Wednesday that he should have sought the guidance of experts four years ago when dealing with a 17-year-old girl who contacted him about an assault reportedly witnessed by Los Angeles Dodgers minor leaguers.

The teen later accused one of the players of a sexual crime, something Kapler said he didn't know in 2015, when the Dodgers organization opted not to contact police. Kapler was the Dodgers' farm director at the time.

In hindsight, Kapler and Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi, who was then the Dodgers' general manager, said they wished they had been more supportive of the young woman and asked for advice from the outside.

"I think this is the right time to say that I'm sorry that I didn't make all the right moves," Kapler said as he was formally introduced by the Giants. "Everything that I did I acted on from a place of goodness and from my heart and wanting to do the right thing, but I was naive. I was in over my skis and trying to do things on my own when it was very clear that I needed counsel."

The Washington Post reported in February that Kapler did not alert police of the alleged assault in 2015. The newspaper said Kapler received an email from the 17-year-old saying she had been assaulted by two women during a night of partying with two Los Angeles minor leaguers. The girl later told police that she was also sexually assaulted by one of the players. Kapler tried to arrange a dinner with the girl and the two players and engaged in discussions with the girl's grandmother, but he never alerted authorities.

Kapler posted on his personal website earlier this year that he didn't know about the sexual assault allegation, saying, "There was no allegation of sexual assault made to me during my handling of this incident."

Kapler said Wednesday that he is taking responsibility for his past error in judgment.

"I don't think that I did enough, and we've talked about some of the ways that I could have been better in those situations," Kapler said. "I have a lot of remorse for that. I wish I would have been more informed, I wish I would have gotten more informed, and I take responsibility for not taking those steps. ... My responsibility in the issue was my responsibility in the issue, and that was to ask more questions, it was to get more counsel. It was to not naively think that I was in a position where I could help in the specific ways that came up."

Kapler acknowledged the challenges of having to explain himself and his actions from the start in a new job, especially following in the footsteps of the retired Bruce Bochy, who won World Series championships with San Francisco in 2010, '12 and '14.

The 44-year-old Kapler said he will eventually gain the trust of the fan base. Some of his first conversations with the players might be about what the Giants stand for, rather than between-the-lines baseball talk.

He realizes he is not the most popular hire.

"Yes, I feel like I'm in a little bit of a hole, and yes, that means something to me," he said. "I think I would probably just use it as an opportunity to roll up my sleeves a little bit more, to dig in a little bit more to really find out what the issues are, to find out why I have had some of those issues and why so far I have not been a popular hire and then be responsive to those things."

The Philadelphia Phillies fired Kapler on Oct. 10 after he went 161-163 in two seasons. Zaidi chose Kapler to lead the Giants over Astros bench coach Joe Espada and Rays bench coach Matt Quatraro.

Zaidi said the incident involving the minor leaguers didn't come up before the Giants hired him last offseason. He said, "There was never an attempt to cover anything up."

"We need to do better in this area. We're talking incident management and not really talking about why these incidents happen in the first place," Zaidi said. "As I think back to not just the past year but my 15 years in baseball, I realize I haven't done enough. I haven't done enough on the side of preventing those things from happening at all rather than what the right thing is and what the right protocol is for how to handle them. "We know that we're going to be on notice," he added. "We want to be on notice because this is something we want to be better at and, I think, we as an industry and a sport have to be better at."
