After debuting with Brooklyn for a fresh start this fall, Kyrie Irving also debuted his latest signature shoe, taking advantage of the team's muted black-and-white jerseys to make the most of his pink and blue limited-edition Kyrie 6.

Inspired by Tokyo, the sneakers are part of an 11-city exclusive pack, highlighting Irving's favorite cities around the world in a tribute to his No. 11 jersey. All throughout the past year, he and Nike designer Ben Nethongkome brainstormed on his sixth signature sneaker, mapping out framing ideas and layering in nuances and details to continue to elevate the line.

"Kyrie's a creative, on the court and even in design sessions," Nethongkome told The Undefeated. "He's not a guy who's gonna sit in the back of the room and observe from afar. He's really in the nitty-gritty."

Irving is just the sixth NBA player to reach six signature shoes with Nike Basketball during his career, a distinction that added to the effort and thought he contributed throughout the development process. Irving's Hamsa Hand tattoo is incorporated along the heel, while an "all-seeing eye" is featured along the collar and outsole pattern.

"What separates my Kyrie 6 from the rest of my line is really just the creative design behind it," Irving said. "I've had a huge, huge hand in a lot of designing processes before. But this is the one where I really, really started from being in a hotel room, having a bunch of ideas and boards, and trying to combine a bunch of my favorite shoes and favorite ideas into one."

For Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell, taking on that process for the first time became a learning experience over the past year as he worked with Adidas to develop themes and ideas for his debut D.O.N. Issue #1 sneaker.

"I wouldn't say overwhelming," he said. "I think it was just a lot. Like, 'Wow, this is all happening.'"

While a variety of colors tie back to the Jazz franchise, Mitchell's love for comic books or elements of his upbringing, his latest pair centers around Veterans Day and highlighting those who have sacrificed for the country. With a camouflage graphic standing out across the white base upper, Mitchell also added a handwritten "Thank You!" along the midsole.

The sneaker design process has become an outlet for him to highlight stories close to him, and it's a process he's looking forward to becoming more hands-on with.

"I've talked to other guys about signature shoes and their input and how they do that," he said. "They've gotten to points where they sit down for three to four hours and break down every part of the shoe to help them in every way possible. That's what I'm trying to get to."

A player much more familiar with the signature shoe design process, Vince Carter, has been celebrating his longtime connection to Nike and his most beloved sneaker during his final NBA season. It was the four-pillar Shox BB4 that he was wearing when he leapfrogged a human during the 2000 Olympics, debuting the technology in the grandest way possible while creating the most iconic highlight of his career.

"The success of the dunk started the legend of the shoes," he said. "But I myself went to another level with them, too. I became a star player in the BB4."

In the early 2000s, Carter became the face of Shox for the brand, with each of his signature shoes incorporating the cushioning pillars.

"Getting the opportunity to debut a new technology was a no-brainer to me. It made sense with how I played," he said.

All season long, he'll be wearing both original colorways and new versions of the classic Nike model as he brings his career to a close. While his new raptor-clawed pair honoring his Toronto roots turned heads, he proudly unveiled the sleek original millennium-era metallic silver and lapis blue pair that he once wore as a face of the franchise last week.

Carter's teammate and the face of the Hawks franchise, Trae Young, has been taking advantage of his own creative input with Adidas to bring life to his laceless, high-performance N3XT L3V3L model.

Styled in ice blue and red -- thanks to the league's loosened color restrictions -- Young's "Ice Trae"-themed colorway could be his best yet, with "Icee"-themed text featured throughout the ice-blue, clear rubber outsole.

Last but not least, Hornets forward Cody Zeller launched his own charity foundation and a "Kicks For Kids" program last week, which will see him wear custom-painted sneakers highlighting a handful of causes close to him. Proceeds from auctions of the game-worn sneaker and from additional donations will ultimately benefit children's hospitals in Charlotte, North Carolina, and his native Indiana, along with autism organizations and the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors.

"It'll help kids in a lot of different ways. Kids in a hospital, help with education, or kids of fallen soldiers," he said. "My brother has a 6-year-old and my other brother has a 2-year-old. I don't have any kids of my own, but I'm the cool uncle for now. Every time I'm around them, kids just have such a pure innocence."

He kicked off the program with a pair of Hornets-hued Jordans honoring former teammate Kemba Walker as the beloved point guard returned last week for the first time as an opponent with the Boston Celtics.

The pair features messages from each of the four students Walker mentored in recent years through the local Big Brothers Big Sisters chapter, highlighting his impact in the community beyond the court.

"Obviously, he did a lot on the court for our team, but he was also very active in the community, and that's what I love about Kemba," Zeller said.

Sun Yingsha escapes, China retains title

Published in Table Tennis

In particular the experience of Liu Shiwen, the youthful exuberance of Sun Yingsha, Miu Hirano and Mima Ito were major highlights.

The quest for the home team was to halt the dominance of China; it was not to happen. A good start vital, the good start was made by the visitors; Chen Meng and Liu Shiwen beat Miu Hirano and Kasumi Ishikawa (11-7, 11-9, 12-10) to set their team on the road to victory.

Match points saved

China ahead, by a whisker Sun Yingsha doubled the lead beating Mima Ito but it could well have been parity; Sun Yingsha escaped from the precipice of defeat.

Mima Ito captured the opening game; in second she raced into a 9-4 lead, before losing the next four points; she called “Time Out”; Sun Yingsha won the next point, level at 9-all. Tense moments but Mima Ito responded, playing bravely she captured the next two points; she led by two games to nil.

Not ready to allow Mima Ito to overpower her easily, Sun Yingsha slowed the tempo of the match, she won the third game then in the fourth led 7-1; Mima Ito reduced the deficit but the gap was too great, a deciding fifth game beckoned.

In the deciding game, the two played with caution trying to outwit each other with ball placement. Mima Ito led 5-2 when they changed ends, she extended the lead to 7-4 and at 10-7 held three match points. She was to win no more, the next five points all went to her adversary, Sun Yingsha she had escaped, China led by two matches to nil.

Experience counts

A close contest between two young players; in the engagement that brought matters to a conclusion, experience confronted youth. Liu Shiwen faced Miu Hirano.

Liu Shiwen, calm and thoroughly efficient controlled matters, she won the first game in style, in the second she recovered from a 1-4 deficit before in the third never being a danger; a straight games was recorded (11-3, 11-8, 11-6).

Once again the title belonged to China and strong hint issued when the world returns to the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Santos Streaks To Kern Co. Score

Published in Racing
Sunday, 10 November 2019 03:29

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Bobby Santos III avoided a near disaster and captured his seventh consecutive King of the Wing feature victory Saturday night at Kern County Raceway Park.

The seven-race streak dates back to 2018.

Santos started sixth and remained patient in the early laps of the race. After taking the third position away from Audra Sasselli, Santos III then set his sights on early race leader Justin Kawahata. Santos took command of the event on lap 13.

On lap 15 near disaster struck for Santos. While entering turn one, he made contact with a lapped car. Santos III got sideways, and in the process, lost momentum and rhythm as well. Kawahata took advantage of the situation and regained the lead.

Santos III quickly recovered and regained the lead on lap 20. Santos went on to capture his second consecutive George “Ziggy” Snider Classic. Following Santos across the stripe were Eric Humphries and Audra Sasselli.

“The  lapped cars were a little tricky this year,” explained Santos. “The track seemed a little narrow this year. I was being extra patient and struggled with a lapped car. We were still on the lead lap. I had to regroup and go after it. We had a great car and I just gotta thank the team for it. Another win tomorrow will make this trip all worth it.”

Santos was the evenings quick qualifier with a lap of 15.537 seconds around the high-banked half-mile asphalt oval. Heat wins went to Santos III and Austin Carter.

With his second-place finish, Eric Humphries is all but assured a second consecutive King of the Wing title.

The series will close out the 2019 season with a Sunday afternoon visit to Irwindale Speedway.

The finish:

Bobby Santos III, Eric Humphries, Audra Sasselli, Ron Larson, Cameron Neisinger, Anthony Quintana, Monty Bergener, Mike Anderson, Austin Carter, Richard Larson, Alan Beck, Justin Kawahata, Mike Straub, Justin Segura, A.J. Russell, Kyle Bergener.

Bronson Battles To Win Southern 100

Published in Racing
Sunday, 10 November 2019 03:40

MILTON, Fla. — Kyle Bronson battled hard to win his second Southern 100 trophy with the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series at Southern Raceway on Saturday night driving the Brandon Collision Rocket.

The two-day race was shortened this year to a one-day 70-lap race due to weather and electrical issues at the track.

Bronson battled early for the second spot with Mark Whitener and then early race leader Joseph Joiner taking the lead on lap 37.

“I really think Joseph had the fastest car in the race, but in lapped traffic, he got forced down into the dirty part of the track in turn four that made his car push up the track,” Bronson said. “That opened the door for me and it was time to go. The racing was really wild and we were bouncing off each other. It was some fun racing.”

The battle with Whitener for the second spot and the pass for the lead in heavy lapped traffic earned the three-time Chevrolet Performance World Championship Race winner the VP Racing Lubricants Slick Move of the Race Award.

Joiner finished second in the Cole Services Special, and Bo Slay took the third spot in a late race charge driving the Slay’s Mobile Home Service Special. Whitener was fourth in the ULC Motorsports Special, and Durrence Layne Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series point leader Jake Knowles drove the Knowles Race Parts Special to a fifth-place finish one lap down.

The finish:

Kyle Bronson, Joseph Joiner, Bo Slay, Mark Whitener, Jake Knowles, Cruz Skinner, Oakley Johns, T.J. Brittain, Tyler Wood, Benny Boudreux, Bryant Marsh, Wil Herrington, Ryan Crane, Jordy Nipper, Jonathan Joiner, Donald Johns, Steven Jernigan, Jake Rainey, Kyle Bryant, Marcus Minga, Jeremy Shaw, Tyler Nicely, Shannon Lee, Tim Anderson.

Eddie Pepperell is one of the European Tour's more intriguing personalities and he added to his persona on Saturday at the Turkish Airlines Open by playing the role of Roy “Tin Cup” McAvoy.

Per The Associated Press:

England's Eddie Pepperell did not even finish his round and was disqualified for failing to complete the fourth hole, his 13th of the day.

Pepperell was 2 over for the round after dropping shots on the second and third and then hit his approach to the next into the water guarding the green. In a scene reminiscent of the ''Tin Cup'' film, Pepperell had several more attempts – even his caddie could not say for certain whether it was four or five – before informing playing partners Martin Kaymer and George Coetzee that he had run out of balls.

The difference between fantasy and reality, in the movie "Tin Cup", McAvoy holes out with his final ball. Pepperell did not.

"Eddie hit his shots to the green, then came over to tell us he had run out of balls," Kaymer told reporters in Turkey. "Then he walked off. I thought he lost four or five. We are about 80 percent sure it was five, 20 percent four. He was quick, so it was hard to keep track. He did not ask if he could borrow one from me or George. It did not look like he wanted to play. He did not putt with his putter on the third hole; he putted with a wedge. So there was a lot happening.

"I have never seen anything like that before. I only watched it on television, in 'Tin Cup.' This is the first time I have seen it live."

Pepperell could have borrowed a ball from Kaymer or Coetzee, but would have been disqualified if it was a different ball than the one in which he started the hole.

Pepperell entered the round 10 shots off the lead after rounds of 70-72. He is currently ranked 41st in the Race to Dubai with two events remaining this season.

WI look to complete first whitewash in five years

Published in Cricket
Sunday, 10 November 2019 05:47

Big picture

These are two sides still in the transitional phase, ranked nine and ten in the ODI charts, coming into the series with newly-appointed captains and a refreshed squad. One might have expected to see an even contest but West Indies have been superior by all means in the series.

With a mix of new talent and experience, they seem like they have the building blocks of a strong team in the future. They couldn't have asked for a better start to their tour - a strong batting display and some impressive fast bowling has handed them wins in the first two matches against Afghanistan and their first ODI series win since 2014.

Be it Shai Hope's calculative play, Roston Chase's matchwinning knock, Nicholas Pooran's rescue act or Hayden Walsh Jr's impressive spell, it has been a series for pulling it all together, especially in the aftermath of their disappointing 50-over World Cup campaign.

There were threats for West Indies coming into the series, especially with the opposition having Rashid Khan in their ranks. But they've negotiated that quite well. Not to mention that the legspinner himself has been going through a quite difficult year, having struggled in the World Cup, followed by going wicketless against West Indies for the first time in his career during the first ODI.

Afghanistan's biggest concern has been their batting. There are just a few notable performers - who have also struggled to convert - and there has been hardly any solid stands or calculated strokeplay to help them aim for bigger totals. Their display has not been quite spirited as the one in 2017, when they drew the ODI series against West Indies in their own backyard.

Form guide

Afghanistan LLLLL (completed matches, most recent first)
West Indies WWLLW

In the spotlight

Afghanistan desperately need their top order to fire, and that's exactly what's expected out of Hazratullah Zazai. But he has been misfiring, having been dismissed for 9 and 23 respectively in the first two ODIs. Since his ODI debut last year against Ireland, he has just one half-century in the format, which is also his only 40-plus score. While he might keep his place in the T20Is, where he averages 52.22 in 10 matches, Afghanistan might be forced to look for other options in ODIs if he continues to fail.

With their fast bowling unit looking in great touch, West Indies might consider throwing in an extra spinner for the final ODI. An ODI debut for left-arm spinner Khary Pierre, perhaps? He excelled in the Caribbean Premier League this year, having been Trinbago Knight Riders' go-to new-ball bower.

Team news

With the opening pair struggling, will Afghanistan hand a debut to 17-year old Ibrahim Zadran? The youngster has an average of 40.23 in List A games and earlier this year scored a half-century on his Test debut against Bangladesh.

Alzarri Joseph followed up his expensive spell in the first ODI with a frugal one in the second. But considering he has gone wicketless in both the ODIs and also in four of his last five ODI appearances, West Indies, who already have a well-rounded pace attack, might consider Keemo Paul for the game.

Pitch and conditions

While matches in India in the recent times have been clouded by atmospheric issues, the second ODI in Lucknow was interrupted by a moth invasion in the stadium. West Indies players were even seen sporting masks. But weather-wise, clear skies are expected on Monday.

Stats and Trivia

  • The last time West Indies whitewashed a team was also when they won an ODI series, against Bangladesh in 2014

  • This has been Rashid's worst year in ODIs. His bowling average in 2019 is 50.92

Toss Bangladesh opt to bowl v India

Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah elected to field first after winning the toss against India in the series deciding third T20I in Nagpur. Mahmudullah said that they want to field first as India likes to chase in this format. Rohit Sharma, his opposite number, said that he would have wanted to bowl first too.

For the visitors, Mosaddek Hossain has been ruled out due to a groin injury, with Mohammad Mithun replacing him. The home side have strengthened their batting by bringing in Manish Pandey in place of allrounder Krunal Pandey.

India: 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 KL Rahul, 4 Shreyas Iyer, 5 Rishabh Pant (wk) 6 Shivam Dube, 7 Manish Pandey, 8 Washington Sundar, 9 Deepak Chahar, 10 Khaleel Ahmed, 11 Yuzvendra Chahal

Bangladesh: 1 Liton Das, 2 Mohammad Naim, 3 Soumya Sarkar, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 5 Mahmudullah (capt), 6 Afif Hossain, 7 Mohammad Mithun, 8 Aminul Islam, 9 Shafiul Islam, 10 Al-Amin Hossain, 11 Mustafizur Rahman

Paralympic champion leads British one-two at the World Para Athletics Championships as Kare Adenegan secures T34 100m silver

Hannah Cockroft secured her 11th world title in style on Sunday morning as she stormed to a world record time of 16.77 ahead of her British team-mate Kare Adenegan.

Adenegan had broken Cockroft’s global record mark with 16.80 in London last year but the five-time Paralympic champion regained the record in Dubai with the 100m performance of her life.

Adenegan was second in 17.49 and USA’s Alexa Halko finished third in 18.83.

“I think number 11 is probably the best yet. It was definitely the hardest to win,” said Cockroft. “They mean more and more.

“Kare is the biggest rival I’ve ever had; she’s a fantastic athlete. It’s great that I’ve come out on top here, but you know that can switch around at any time. You’ve got to take the gold when you can and keep working hard.

“I really wanted to come and win the gold. I would have been happy with silver because I know Kare has been working hard and is strong and was the world record holder. I haven’t dipped below 17 seconds ever in my career, not even in training, so I have no idea where that came from, but I’m so pleased it did on race day.

“I just about managed to hold back the tears when I crossed the finish line, so it is going to be an emotional moment on the podium.”

Teenager Adenegan, who has been balancing her athletics with starting university and talked about Plato and being able to flourish in her post race interview with AW (video below), said: “The silver means a lot.

“I’ve had a really long year so I wasn’t sure what kind of form I would come into the world championships with, but the fact I’ve done a season’s best shows I’m improving and getting back to the shape I need to be in.”

Another medal for GB was claimed in the men’s F41 shot put as world record-holder Kyron Duke bagged bronze, throwing 13.82m in a competition won by Uzbekistan’s Bobirjon Omonov with a 14.03m championship record.

Reigning world champion Niko Kappel of Germany was second after a throw of 13.87m.

The first world record of the day came in the men’s F12 shot put, with Ukraine’s Roman Danyliuk throwing 16.69m. Spain’s Kim Lopez Gonzalez got silver with 15.69m and Elbek Sultonov from Uzbekistan bronze with 15.39m.

Poland’s Barbara Niewiedzial won her sixth world title with victory in the T20 1500m in 4:36.10 as GB’s Hannah Taunton fifth in 4:45.01 on her international debut.

Another multiple world champion is USA’s Lex Gillette and he won his fourth consecutive men’s T11 long jump title with a leap of 6.45m.

“Tokyo is always in mind, but now I will go home, take a few days off and enjoy this,” he said.

In the heats, Germany’s Johannes Floors broke the men’s T62 100m world record with 10.54 and South Africa’s Mpumelelo Mhlongo improved his own T44 100m world record with 11.09, while GB’s Ben Rowlings was sixth in heat two of the T34 100m in a time of 16.87.
