Hatton takes six-man playoff under the lights in Turkey

Published in Golf
Sunday, 10 November 2019 02:22

Tyrrell Hatton made a par on the fourth extra hole to defeat Matthias Schwab and close out a wild finish to the Turkish Airlines Open, one that featured a final putt under the lights and the European Tour’s first six-man playoff in more than 16 years.

Hatton earned his second career Rolex Series win and a $2 million payday from a top-heavy purse, with the other five playoff participants each receiving $430,590. Joining Schwab in a tie for second were Erik Van Rooyen, Kurt Kitayama, Victor Perez and Benjamin Hebert. It was the circuit's first six-man playoff since the 2003 Dunhill Championship.

Hatton started the day in a tie for second, but he birdied the final hole of regulation to join the playoff, chipped in for birdie on the first extra hole to keep his hopes alive and was the last man standing when Schwab missed a 5-footer under the floodlights that would have forced a fifth extra hole.

"It's so surreal. I can't actually believe that I won," Hatton said. "It's been quite a difficult year in terms of things happening off the course, but in the last month I feel like I've really found my game again."

The scene was an unusual one in Antalya, with the six players split into two groups of three for the first playoff hole. Van Rooyen's tee shot found a bush and effectively ended his chances, while countrymen Hebert and Perez were also eliminated after failing to make a birdie, cutting the playoff field in half.

Hatton's chip-in from off the fringe meant he joined Schwab and Kitayama on the second extra hole, where Kitayama's 8-footer to win barely missed. Kitayama, who was looking to become the first European Tour rookie to win three times in a single season and just the third American to ever pull off the feat, was eliminated with a par on the third extra hole.

That left Hatton and Schwab to battle it out, with tournament officials turning on the lights as darkness enveloped the Montgomerie Maxx Royal. Schwab had led after each of the first three rounds this week, including a three-shot cushion to start the day, but his par on the 72nd hole led to the playoff and closed out a final-round 70.

Schwab drained a lengthy birdie putt on the third extra hole to extend the playoff, but while Hatton surveyed a 10-foot birdie try on the fourth extra hole the Austrian put his eagle chip over the green. Schwab received a reprieve when Hatton missed his putt by the thinnest of margins, but when Schwab's par putt to match followed a similar line his chances of a maiden European Tour win were dashed.

Hatton will now move to sixth place in the season-long Race to Dubai standings, and after starting the week 48th in the world rankings he's expected to move to 30th. It's a timely ascent given that the top 50 at the end of the calendar year will receive invites to the 2020 Masters.

"I can't wait to get that Masters invite through the post again," said Hatton, who had started the year ranked 23rd in the world and will make his fifth straight Masters appearance next spring. "It's a special feeling and obviously a bonus, but it all comes with doing well."

Sources: Enrique not an option as Emery backed

Arsenal remain behind manager Unai Emery, sources have told ESPN FC, amid reports claiming former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique could replace him.

Emery has come under increasing pressure at Arsenal after losing 2-0 to Leicester on Saturday. That result leaves the club eight points behind Manchester City in fourth place having played a game fewer, and nine points behind Leicester in second place.

Sources have also told ESPN FC that Luis Enrique would not consider a return to coaching right now after leaving the Spain job for personal reasons in June. They added that he likes to build projects and would not like to arrive at a club mid-season.

ESPN FC reported a week ago that Arsenal continued to back Emery, a three-time Europa League winner with Sevilla, despite giving up a two-goal lead to draw against Crystal Palace.

That stance has not changed after the defeat to Leicester, and he is unlikely to be sacked this season unless things deteriorate considerably.

However, despite retaining Arsenal's backing that does not mean the Gunners' head of football Raul Sanllehi is not talking to people about the club's longer-term plans.

ESPN FC's Rodrigo Faez contributed to this report.

WI captain Stafanie Taylor ruled out of India T20Is

Published in Cricket
Sunday, 10 November 2019 07:14

West Indies' captain Stafanie Taylor has been ruled out of the ongoing women's T20I series against India after sustaining a ligament sprain last week. She will be replaced in the squad by Guyanese allrounder Cherry-Ann Fraser, while Anisa Mohammed will stand in as captain for the remainder of the series.

"It is very disappointing to lose Stafanie at this crucial time and she will no doubt be missed but her health and recovery are of utmost importance," Ann Browne-John, the lead selector of CWI's women's and girls selection panel, said.

"We have the ICC T20 World Cup in a few months and it is critical that Stafanie gets the time to recover and return to full fitness."

Taylor had been one of West Indies' key players in the three-match ODI series that preceded the T20Is, racking up scores of 94, 20 and 79. She, however, sat out the first T20I at Gros Islet, which West Indies lost by 84 runs.

Paarl Rocks 170 for 9 (Davids 38, du Plessis 38, Nortje 3-31, Linde 3-23) beat Cape Town Blitz 84 (Shamsi 3-16) by 86 runs

After defeating the defending champions in the season opener on Friday night, the Cape Town Blitz were rudely brought back down to earth by their nearest rivals, the Paarl Rocks, on Sunday. The Blitz were dismissed for 84 - the lowest total in the competition's short history - inside 16 overs, in chase of 171. That meant the Rocks took the early Western Cape derby bragging rights, and sit at the top of the points table.

Home-boy gives the home-side a start

Henry Davids is the only member of the Rocks' XI that is actually from the area so it was fitting that he gave them what turned into a match-winning start. Davids and Cameron Delport's opening stand was worth 41 runs in 27 balls and included an impressive assault on Test players Vernon Philander and Dale Steyn. Davids took two fours and a six off Philander's opening spell while Delport took four fours off Steyn before being dismissed by another international, Anrich Nortje. Davids was then joined by captain Faf du Plessis, with whom he shared a second-wicket stand of 38. Interestingly, both Davids and du Plessis had the joint-top score, also 38.

Blitz pull it back

The Rocks raced to 107 for 3 midway through the 10th over before a suicidal attempt at a second run saw Faf du Plessis run out and sparked a collapse. In the next 9.3 overs, Rocks lost seven wickets and scored 63 runs, with George Linde playing a starring role in slowing them down. Linde had Hardus Viljoen stumped for 4, Mangaliso Mosehle trapped lbw attempting a slog-sweep and took the catch at long-off that ended Isuru Udana's innings, off Anrich Nortje. Both Nortje and Linde claimed three wickets, giving the Blitz a chaseable target.

Rocks start with short-ball trap

Viljoen, who played one Test for South Africa against England before going down the Kolpak route, is known for aggressive, quick bowling and a mean bouncer and he used that to make early inroads into the Blitz's line-up. Quinton de Kock was caught at backward point, cutting a short, wide ball in Viljoen's first over and Janneman Malan, after scoring back-to-back boundaries off Viljoen was caught behind attempting a pull off a short ball in his second. You can take the bowler away from the bounce of South African wickets but you can't take the bounce out of the bowler when he gets back on them, it seems.

Blitz spun out

At 56 for 5 at the halfway mark, it looked as though the Blitz were facing an uphill and Tabraiz Shamsi made it even steeper with his spell. He took 3 for 16 in three overs to stamp out all hope the Blitz would have had and to keep his name in the conversation when it comes to the national T20 side. Shamsi took a simple return catch off the second ball he bowled when Mohammad Nawaz chipped the ball back to him, beat Magala outside off to bowl him and had Linde stumped after coming down the track to a delivery that turned across him. The Blitz lost 5 for 27 in 27 balls to hand the Rocks a handsome, 86-run win.

Bay Giants defend 167 to pile on Stars' woes

Published in Cricket
Sunday, 10 November 2019 09:02

A bad start for the defending champions, the Jozi Stars, got worse as they lost their second match of the tournament to the Nelson Mandela Bay Giants. A typically windy afternoon in Port Elizabeth threatened to derail the home side, who dropped four catches in defense of their score of 167, but the experience of Chris Morris and Imran Tahir ensured the Giants opened their account with a 24-run win.

Hello England batsmen, it's KG

The leader of South Africa's Test attack has the opportunity to warm up for events later this summer when he came up against Jason Roy and needed only two balls to make an impression. Kagiso Rababa had Roy caught at fine-leg with the second ball of the match and though it was not a particularly menacing ball - angling down leg - or a particularly poor shot - a flick that went wrong - it may start to plant a seed of doubt for what could take place when England's tour begins next month. Rabada has already dismissed Roy three times in nine ODIs but has yet to come up against him in a Test, something that should change as the series gets underway.

Old hands, young legs

The Giants lost early wickets and were 49 for 4 in the seventh over, needing a repair job, when two of their most experienced players came together to provide the mid-innings impetus. Heino Kuhn and Farhaan Behardien, who played together at the Titans franchise and Northerns province before that, shared an 85-run fourth-wicket stand off 62 balls. They hit eight fours and a six in their partnership which means they ran the other 47 runs, often pushing for two when taking fielders on the long boundary on the leg-side. Stars' captain Temba Bavuma acknowledged that the team's fielding, against two of the quickest players between the wickets, let them down.

Another half-century for Hendricks

His team may not be in the best form but Reeza Hendricks certainly is and scored a second half-century in as many matches to set the Stars' chase up strongly and soar to the top of the run-charts. Hendricks was dropped on 3 by Onke Nyaku backward-point and on 7 by Behardien at deep square leg. Hendricks lost his opening partner Chris Gayle four balls after the Powerplay ended but surged on regardless. His cover drive remains his signature stroke and it came out twice in his 70-run second-wicket stand with captain Bavuma.

Chris Morris, the death bowler

But even with Hendricks at the crease, the Stars were scoring a touch too slowly and needed 57 runs off the last five overs. Bavuma was caught at deep mid-wicket which punctured their efforts but then Chris Morris, who opened the bowling with two overs for eight runs, gave away just two runs off the 17th over to peg the Stars back.

Hendricks was under pressure to make something happen and tried to clear long-on off Imran Tahir but was caught on the rope and the squeeze was on. Tahir gave away just six runs in his final over and took the crucial wicket of Hendricks to finish with figures of 4-0-24-1 but Morris was the hero of the last passage of play. He also bowled the 19th over, in which he dismissed Dan Christian and conceded nine runs, leaving Junior Dala to defend 31 runs off the final over.

Overall, the Stars managed just 32 runs for the loss of four wickets in the final quarter of their innings, which was too little to take them over the line.

Arkansas fires coach Morris after 4-18 start

Published in Breaking News
Sunday, 10 November 2019 08:49

Arkansas has fired Chad Morris as its football coach, and tight ends coach/special-teams coordinator Barry Lunney Jr. will finish out the season as the Razorbacks' interim coach, the school announced Sunday.

In less than two seasons, Morris was just 4-18 overall since replacing Bret Bielema in December 2017 and was winless in 14 SEC games. Arkansas suffered its second embarrassing home loss of the season on Saturday in a 45-19 setback to Western Kentucky. The Hogs also lost 31-24 at home to San Jose State on Sept. 21, triggering a seven-game losing streak.

Arkansas has an open date this coming weekend before finishing the season against LSU on the road and then Missouri at home. The Hogs are 2-8 overall this season and have lost 17 straight SEC games dating back to the end of the 2017 season.

Lunney, a former Arkansas quarterback, is in his seventh season on Arkansas' coaching staff.

"As part of my continued evaluation, I have come to the conclusion that a change in leadership is necessary to move our football program forward and position it for success," Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek said via statement. "It is clear that we have not made the progress necessary to compete and win, especially within the Southeastern Conference. Throughout our history in football, as well as with our other sport programs, we have demonstrated that the University of Arkansas is capable of being nationally competitive. I have no doubt that as we move forward, we will identify a head coach that will help lead our program to that benchmark.

"I want to express my personal and professional regard to Coach Morris and thank him for his investment in the lives of our student-athletes."

Under the terms of Morris' six-year, $21 million contract, the Razorbacks will owe him 70% of his remaining compensation, which totals about $10 million. The Razorback Foundation will make monthly payments to Morris through 2023.

The Razorbacks owed Bielema about $11.9 million when they fired him in November 2017. The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported last month that the Razorback Foundation had stopped making monthly payments of $320,833 to Bielema and asked him to return $4.2 million it has already paid him.

At issue is whether Bielema, who now works as a defensive line coach for the New England Patriots, breached his agreement by not actively pursuing another job with compensation similar to what Arkansas paid him.

The Hogs have been outscored by 138 points in their past four losses and have given up 45 or more points in all four of those losses. This will be the fourth straight year in which they've finished with a losing record in SEC play.

Morris was previously the head coach at SMU before being hired at Arkansas.

Possible successors include Auburn's Gus Malzahn, whom the Hogs targeted when they hired Morris, and Memphis coach Mike Norvell.

Sources: AB not expected to return this season

Published in Breaking News
Sunday, 10 November 2019 07:32

Barring a significant turn of events, Antonio Brown is not expected to play again this season, league sources told ESPN.

Brown is continuing to push for his return to the NFL, and he is scheduled to meet with the league Thursday to address the sexual assault allegations he faces, but obstacles await the free-agent wide receiver at every step.

If Brown were to get an offer from any of the three teams that have been in contact with him, the NFL would be prepared to place him on the commissioner's exempt list, according to sources.

If Brown is placed on the commissioner's exempt list, the team that signed him would have to pay him until the league's investigation is resolved, which might not happen before the season ends.

Additionally, Brown has not turned over all of the evidence the NFL has requested to gain a broader understanding of his case, according to a source.

Brown's agent Drew Rosenhaus told ESPN that he is "confident Antonio will play again this season."

"I believe the NFL should clear him after they interview him this week, and I expect he will be signed shortly after that," Rosenhaus told ESPN.

There are teams around the league that believe that after the NFL completes its investigation, additional discipline could await Brown, further affecting his chances of playing again this season. That potential discipline could stretch well into next season.

Brown tweeted Thursday that he is "determined" to return to the NFL as soon as possible, backtracking from an earlier tweet in which he said he would "never" play in the NFL again.

Brown, 31, is being investigated by the NFL under its personal conduct policy following a lawsuit filed by his former trainer, Britney Taylor, that alleges she was sexually assaulted by Brown on multiple occasions. Brown also was accused of sexual misconduct at his home by an artist who was working there in 2017.

Brown has officially been served lawsuit papers from Taylor, sources told ESPN, and has hired attorney Camille Blanton to handle his case.

Brown has played in only one game this season -- Week 2 against the Dolphins. He was released by the Raiders before the season and by the Patriots before Week 3, after it was made known that he sent text messages to the artist accusing him of misconduct.

Brown has filed eight grievances against the Raiders and Patriots, a source told ESPN's Dan Graziano. He is seeking $39.775 million in lost salary, bonuses and guaranteed money.

Source: Stafford out with broken bones in back

Published in Breaking News
Sunday, 10 November 2019 06:25

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford has officially been ruled out Sunday against the Chicago Bears, the team announced.

Stafford has fractured bones in his back and doctors will not let him play, a source told ESPN.

Stafford was practicing Friday and throwing 60-yard passes, but doctors wanted him to have further testing on his painful back injury, according to multiple sources.

Stafford is now considered week-to-week with an injury that one source said could sideline him for "this week or 3 weeks." Stafford had started 136 consecutive regular-season games entering Sunday, the sixth-longest streak for a quarterback in NFL history.

The Lions will turn to Jeff Driskel, who will make his sixth career start Sunday, according to sources. The last Lions quarterback to start a game other than Stafford was Shaun Hill in Week 17 of the 2010 season.

Driskel started five games for Cincinnati last season and completed 59.7 percent of his passes for six touchdowns and two interceptions

Stafford's injury dates back to last season, when he played through the pain and didn't miss a game, even though those around him knew how much he was suffering.

The pain has been so bad this season that Stafford's status for Detroit's Week 4 game against the Kansas City Chiefs was in doubt nearly up until kickoff, according to sources. He passed for 291 yards and three touchdowns in that game.

The Lions have listed Stafford on their injury report as questionable five times going back to last season, including twice this year -- once before the game against the Chiefs in Week 4, and this week.

Stafford, 31, is fourth in the NFL with 2,499 passing yards and ranks second with 19 touchdowns, trailing only Russell Wilson (22).

Asked about the injury Wednesday, Stafford said he was "fine." He was officially listed as questionable on the injury report and practiced on a limited basis every day this past week.

Stafford's 136 consecutive games is the second-longest active streak among quarterbacks behind Philip Rivers' 218 and trails only Brett Favre (297), Rivers, Eli Manning (210), Peyton Manning (208) and Matt Ryan (163) on the all-time list.

With Driskell in for Stafford, the line has gone from Bears -2.5 all the way to -6.5 at Caesars Sportsbook.

ESPN's Michael Rothstein contributed to this report.
