Ireland coach Joe Schmidt says his side gave New Zealand "a leg up" in their 46-14 World Cup quarter-final defeat by the holders in Tokyo on Saturday.

The All Blacks ran in seven tries to Ireland's two in a comprehensive win.

"We gave them too many axis points in the game, we turned the ball over and missed opportunities to get into their zone and really put some pressure on," said departing Ireland coach Schmidt.

"They've got ball runners, guys who tactically control the game very well."

He added: "They were able to retrieve a few kicks for the line that we should have made better use of. When they kicked for the line and it was going out on the full we gave them a leg up by catching it with a foot in touch," he told ITV Sport.

"They are the sort of things that erode confidence a little bit. Once they get points ahead you're chasing the game and when you're chasing the game you're taking risks.

"Against a team like that if you're not executing perfectly they're going to capitalise on it."

The loss extends Ireland's run of never having moved beyond the quarter-finals of a World Cup, despite a series of wins over southern hemisphere sides in recent years, Six Nations successes and having enjoyed a spell as the number one ranked team in the world.

"We have been flat this year. When you reach a height I think there's always a risk you slip off that height a little bit," said Schmidt.

"I don't think there was any complacency but we made a target of ourselves - teams certainly went after us a little bit more where we were able to sneak up on New Zealand a couple of times and on a few other teams.

"A lot of teams when they have a really good year drop off a little bit.

"I know New Zealand were very much up for this game but we gave them a bit of a leg up and you can't afford to do that. We didn't make the most of field position and opportunity when we did make those chances.

"There were a few elements of our game that stood up really well - the line-out and the scrum I thought were solid - but you need more than that."

Schmidt now leaves his position as Ireland coach, while captain Rory Best retires from professional rugby after winning 124 caps during a 14-year Ireland career.

"I thought the All Blacks were fantastic. They were really, really clinical," said Best after the match.

"We felt we prepared well all week. We felt we had a gameplan and we had enough in our armoury to beat them.

"They started well, came out of the blocks hard at us and put us on the back foot. Like good sides do they never let us off that again.

"They didn't let us get on the front foot, get any momentum and this is a front-foot game, especially in knockout rugby.

"We'll look back at this and see how we can get better but you have to give enormous credit to the All Blacks."

England overcame Australia in emphatic fashion to set up a World Cup semi-final against New Zealand on Saturday.

But Eddie Jones' side will not be getting ahead of themselves just yet after watching their opponents do a demolition job on Ireland.

Standing in England's path is one of the toughest challenges in world sport, beating the All Blacks - and doing it on the grandest stage of all.

So how big is the task facing England? And what should they expect from the two-time defending champions in Yokohama next weekend?

A vintage All Blacks performance

The narrative, perhaps wishful thinking, before the tournament was that New Zealand were beatable, not the same side that won back-to-back World Cups.

Ireland contributed to that ideal by beating the All Blacks twice in the past three years, while Steve Hansen's side also lost to Australia this summer and were held by Rugby Championship winners South Africa.

But they appear to be peaking at the right time.

New Zealand passed their first test in their opening match of the tournament, seeing off second-favourites South Africa 23-13, and swatted away Ireland on Saturday with ruthless efficiency.

The All Blacks scored seven tries for the third time in the history of the knockout stages - they are the only side to have scored seven beyond the pool stages - and did so having shared the possession equally with Ireland.

The difference was the speed in which they recycle the ball, and the pace and skill of both the backs and forwards gives them a clinical cutting edge.

New Zealand made a massive 461 metres with the ball to Ireland's 251, 13 clean breaks to their opponent's two, beat 29 defenders compared to 11 and made more offloads than their Irish counterparts (16-2).

New Zealand coach Hansen was impressed by his side's fitness after they scored a late try despite going down to 14 men.

"We've worked really, really hard on it," he said. "Nic Gill is one of the better people in the world at strength and conditioning and we pride ourselves on working hard.

"Both the defence and the attack were good."

The All Blacks top the charts across the tournament, too.

Despite seeing their final pool match against Italy cancelled because of Typhoon Hagibis, they have scored the most points (203), most tries (29) and made the most clean breaks (84) of any team in the competition.

Hansen has also played down the idea his side lack experience in the backs - with centres Jack Goodhue and Anton Lienert-Brown and wing George Bridge all 24, and Sevu Reece only 22.

"A lot of our guys have been involved in championship-winning teams in Super Rugby and in big moments and that's why you select them," added Hansen.

"Their enthusiasm, excitement and ability to play the game in a formula is really important."

The brilliance of Beauden Barrett

Whether deployed at fly-half or full-back, Beauden Barrett is a sensation.

The two-time World Player of the Year put in a man-of-the-match performance at 15 against Ireland that saw him make more carries (21) than any other New Zealand player in the history of the World Cup.

His first-half try took his total tally for the All Blacks to 35, more than any other current New Zealand player, and the 28-year-old also set up younger brother Jordie with a pin-point pass to cross late on.

It came in a week the Barrett brothers - Beauden, Jordie and Scott - lost their grandfather.

"It's been an emotional week for my family," said Beauden. "We wanted to play well for him. Thinking of you up there, love you, Grandad Ted."

A vintage display from Barrett was complemented by the tempo-setting half-back pairing of Richie Mo'unga and Aaron Smith, with the scrum-half diving over for two first-half tries.

Savea and Cane to test England's 'Kamikaze Kids'

New Zealand flanker Ardie Savea was in inspired form against Ireland, making a break and finding hooker Dane Coles in support to eventually send George Bridge over.

Savea's team-high 14 tackles helped contribute to New Zealand's total of 130, compared to Ireland's 108, while the All Blacks also won almost twice as many turnovers. (17-9)

"We're working really hard to get set, that allows us to make those tackles," explained Savea.

"Back to the drawing board I guess on Monday. It's going to be another toughie against England as well. We look forward to that."

He was joined in the New Zealand pack by the returning Brodie Retallick, who only played 30 minutes in the pool stage but has 78 caps in the bank and is a former World Rugby Player of the Year.

Savea, Sam Cane and co will pose a huge test for England's young flankers Tom Curry and Sam Underhill - the 'Kamikaze Kids' who underpinned England's victory over Australia by winning the battle against David Pocock and Michael Hooper.

History on All Blacks' side

Think of England facing New Zealand at the World Cup and most - at least those old enough - will remember a Jonah Lomu-inspired All Blacks side running in six tries on the way to a 45-29 victory in the 1995 semi-final.

England have faced their Kiwi counterparts three times in total in the competition, and lost each time.

Four years earlier, England were beaten 18-12 in a pool match and in 1999 they went down 30-16 at Twickenham in the same stage.

Back in this century, and New Zealand head into Saturday's semi-final having won two World Cups on the bounce and without a defeat at the tournament since they went out to France in the last eight 12 years ago.

Can Wales avenge 2011 heartache v France? - match preview

Saturday, 19 October 2019 09:33

Wales will be looking to avenge their 2011 World Cup semi-final defeat when they face France in Oita on Sunday in the 2019 quarter-finals.

The two teams have only met once in the global tournament when France agonisingly defeated Wales 9-8 in Auckland eight years ago.

Wales almost pulled off a stunning win after captain Sam Warburton was red carded after 19 minutes for a tip tackle on Vincent Clerc.

Eight years on, Wales look far more settled then their French opponents having won seven out of the last eight matches between the two sides since that day in 2011.

Wales have proved impressive in achieving quarter-final qualification, winning Pool D by defeating Georgia, Australia, Fiji and Uruguay.

There have been reports of unrest in the French camp but Les Bleus are also unbeaten.

France finished second in Pool C behind England after victories over Argentina, Tonga and USA.

The pool decider against England was called off because of Typhoon Hagibis with both sides being awarded two points each. England topped the group after securing more bonus points in their three wins.

Team news

Wales backs Jonathan Davies, Dan Biggar and Hadleigh Parkes have all been passed fit as Warren Gatland names the same starting side that played against Georgia and Australia.

Davies has recovered from a knee injury suffered against Fiji, while Parkes picked up a shoulder problem against Uruguay having already suffered a small fracture in his hand against Georgia.

Biggar suffered separate head injuries against Fiji and Australia and was forced off in both games but has passed the return to play protocols.

Wing George North is also available after recovering from an ankle injury.

France have made five changes from the side that defeated Tonga. Scrum-half Antoine Dupont had been troubled by a back problem, but will take his place alongside half-back partner Romain Ntamack.

The starting side consists of 14 players from their opening win against Argentina with the only change being lock Bernard le Roux starting instead of Arthur Iturria.

Brunel's side shows six changes from the team that lost 24-19 to Wales in the Six Nations in February.

Full-back Maxime Medard is also the only survivor from the French team which beat Wales in the 2011 World Cup semi-final in Auckland.

Wales: L Williams; North, Jonathan Davies, Parkes, Adams; Biggar, G Davies; Wyn Jones, Owens, Francis, Ball, Alun Wyn Jones (capt), Wainwright, Navidi, Tipuric.

Replacements: E Dee, Carre, D Lewis, Beard, Moriarty, T Williams, Patchell, Watkin.

France: Medard; Penaud, Vakatawa, Fickou, Huget; Ntamack, Dupont; Poirot, Guirado (capt), Slimani, Le Roux, Vahaamahina, Lauret, Ollivon, Alldritt.

Replacements: Chat, Baille, Setiano, Gabrillagues, Picamoles, Serin, Lopez, Rattez.

Referee: Jaco Peyper (South Africa); Assistant referees: Nic Berry (Australia), Paul Williams (New Zealand); TMO: Marius Jonker (South Africa).

What they said

Wales head coach Warren Gatland: "France are a big team, a physical team. We've had a great record against them, we've won seven of the last eight games and the one we lost was the 100-minute game in Paris where they scored in the last minute.

"As coaches and players, this is what you do all the hard work and training for. It's all for big moments and to try to get to finals.

"As a coaching group, we've had a lot of success in big matches when it's really counted, whether that's been in Grand Slam games, European finals or Premiership finals with Wasps or even on (British & Irish) Lions tours as well.

"We've got a pretty good formula as a group about getting things right. It's not just about the physical preparation, it's about being mentally right and the top two inches everyone talks about."

France head coach Jacques Brunel: "Wales's confidence is higher than ours, that's obvious. Their ranking is much better. They've been consistent for a few seasons. That's undeniable.

"They're not going to change their strategy. They're going to rely on a very strong defensive screen, quality individuals, their ability to put the opposition under pressure.

"They're the favourites. We're in the role of the underdog. That's logical, normal, but it doesn't stop us believing in our chances."

The ground

Set within parkland just outside Oita City, Oita Stadium, also known as the Oita Bank Dome, hosts five Rugby World Cup 2019 matches, including two quarter-finals after England and Australia played in the opening knockout game.

This will be Wales's second match at the ground following their 29-17 Pool D win over Fiji.

It is the largest World Cup venue on the southern island of Kyushu with a capacity of 40,000 and hosted three matches in the 2002 football World Cup finals.

The stadium has a retractable dome roof with roof system driven by a wire traction system. The roof is closed for all the World Cup matches.

Upset Minded Jones Breaks Through In Kansas

Published in Racing
Saturday, 19 October 2019 15:38

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Brandon Jones roared into the race lead during a late restart and held on to earn his first NASCAR Xfinity Series victory on Saturday at Kansas Speedway.

Jones took advantage of two on-track incidents that opened the door for the 22-year-old Georgia native to score his first series victory in the Kansas Lottery 300.

The first such incident came with 15 laps left as Chase Briscoe and Christopher Bell were battling for the race lead when they came upon the slower car of Garrett Smithley.

Smithley drifted up the track coming out of turn four just as race leader Briscoe got to him, with Briscoe slamming into the back of Smithley’s car. The resulting accordion effect saw Bell make contact with Briscoe’s car and spin, leaving both leaders with damage as the caution flag waved.

Briscoe continued on from the wreck in the lead, but the contact with Bell ripped the bumper cover off his car and he was forced to pit to replace it, handing the lead to Cole Custer, with Tyler Reddick and Jones the next two cars in line.

The race resumed with 10 laps left and Custer and Reddick battled for the lead in the first two corners, with Reddick drifting up and making slight contact with Custer’s left-rear quarter panel to force him up into the wall.

Jones, meanwhile, had hugged the white line on the bottom of the track and drove by the slowing cars of Custer and Reddick to suddenly find himself in the race lead. The final caution of the race waved shortly thereafter for the damaged machine of Joey Gase.

That set up one final restart with five laps left and Jones quickly shot away from the field after restart on the outside. Briscoe made a quick run through the pack in his damaged Ford to take second, but fell back into the clutches of Reddick with two laps left.

Reddick quickly dispatched Briscoe, but he was out of time to catch Jones, who held on to earn his first Xfinity Series victory in his 134th start.

The victory for Jones comes one race after he was eliminated from the NASCAR Xfinity Series playoffs following an opening lap crash at Dover (Del.) Int’l Speedway on Oct. 5.

“This is incredible. I knew this was going to happen. We were going to come here and have an amazing run like we did today, but it’s only because of those guys here (his crew). They’ve followed me for a long time now,” Jones said. “This feels way better since it has been so tough to get to this point.

“I’m not going to lie about this. My foot was literally shaking on the accelerator on that last lap. I’m not even sure I was wide open at the time I was doing it. There was a lot of nerve, a lot of emotion going through my mind.”

Reddick and Briscoe followed Jones across the line in second and third, respectively. Michael Annett and Justin Allgaier completed the top-five.

After the race Reddick and Custer confronted each other on pit road, which led to a scuffle between the two drivers and their respective crews. Neither driver was injured in the brief tussle.

Tempers Flare, Fists Fly Between Reddick & Custer

Published in Racing
Saturday, 19 October 2019 15:43

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Playoff competitors Cole Custer and Tyler Reddick were not happy with each other following Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Kansas Speedway, leading to a scuffle on pit road immediately after the race.

The pit road confrontation was the result of contact between the two during a restart that cost both men a shot at the victory in Saturday’s Kansas Lottery 300, a race eventually won by Brandon Jones.

Custer and Reddick lined up first and second for the restart with 10 laps left, with the two battling through turns one and two. Coming out of the second corner Reddick drifted up the track from the bottom, making light contact with Custer’s left-rear quarter panel to force him up into the wall.

Custer dropped back outside the top-10 as a result of the contact while Reddick lost the lead to eventual winner Jones. Reddick was able to recover following one more restart to finish second, while Custer settled for 11th.

After the race Custer and Reddick approached each other on pit road, with Custer placing his right hand on Reddick’s left shoulder first. Reddick responded by putting his right hand on Custer’s left shoulder and within seconds the conversation turned into a melee.

Multiple crew members from both teams dove in to break up the fight between the two, with Custer getting pulled clear of the melee quickly while Reddick continued to swing at members of Custer’s crew before being pulled away by his team.

Custer explained in the moments after the pit road scuffle that he just wanted to express his displeasure with Reddick, but things took a dramatic turn.

“I was just frustrated he can’t keep his car on the bottom and then runs us up into the wall. If he wants to wreck cars and put them in the wall from time to time that’s fine, but when it affects me I’m not going to be very happy with you,” Custer said.

“I went up to just yell at him, but I put my arm on his shoulder and he went berserk,” Custer added. “I thought we had a good car. I thought we had a shot to win. A lot of things went wrong.”

Reddick said that if Custer was going to place his hand on him, he was going to return the favor.

“I understand Cole’s frustration 100 percent,” Reddick said. “We’re trying to lock ourselves into Homestead and he came up to talk after the race and as soon as he put a hand on me I put a hand on him back. That’s just how it’s going to be if we’re going to have a conversation that way.

“I’m out of breath, but had a little bit of a fight there with some people. Was a little bit of fun.”

Despite the post-race melee, Reddick was still complimentary of Custer.

“I think a lot of Cole and his driving ability and a lot of that team,” Reddick said. “Just heat of the moment. We’re pissed off. I’m sure we’ll talk about it soon. Maybe today, tomorrow. Who knows, maybe we’ll have a beer over it.

“Obviously (I) didn’t want to get in his quarter panel, but if I lift I get passed.”

Parel, Tolles share Champs playoff event lead; Monty one back

RICHMOND, Va. - Scott Parel shot his second straight 6-under 66 on Saturday for a share of the lead with Tommy Tolles in the Dominion Energy Charity Classic, the first of three tournaments in the PGA Tour Champions' Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs.

Parel rebounded from a bogey on the par-4 15th with birdies on the par-5 16th and 18th holes at The Country Club of Virginia's James River Course. He won twice last season on the 50-and-overt tour.

Tolles, the first-round leader, shot a 67. He also birdied 16 and 18 after dropping a stroke on 15.

Tolles is winless in three seasons on tour and entered the week 59th in the Charles Schwab Cup standings, with the top 54 advancing to the Invesco QQQ Championship on Nov. 1-3 in Thousand Oaks, California.

Colin Montgomerie was a stroke back at 11 under after a 67.

Bernhard Langer (65), Miguel Angel Jimenez (68) and Retief Goosen (68) were 9 under.

VAR company apologises for Spurs-Watford drama

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 19 October 2019 16:40

The company that provides VAR technology promised to work with officials and the Premier League after problems mired Sunday's 1-1 draw between Tottenham Hotspur and Watford.

Watford initially got off to a flying start when Abdoulaye Doucoure scored in the sixth minute for the visitors. The league's basement club also could have been awarded a penalty when Gerard Deulofeu was tripped by Jan Vertonghen.

However, controversy arose when Dele Alli denied Watford their first win in nine games with a late strike that was initially ruled out for handball then awarded after a VAR review, even though Harry Kane appeared to push defender Christian Kabasele in the build-up.

The moment was also shrouded in confusion when the screens at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium at first said "No Goal" before correcting itself to show the goal had been awarded.

Hawk-Eye Innovations, the company which provides the technology, apologised to both teams' fans "for the confusion caused."

"We are working together with the Professional Game Match Officials Board and the Premier League to understand the root cause of this problem and propose a series of measures to ensure it won't happen again," it said in a statement.

Watford coach Quique Sanchez Flores said he is losing his faith in VAR as a force for good in the game after the wo decisive decisions went against his side.

"I was thinking VAR is something objective but I'm starting to think it's very subjective," Sanchez Flores said after the game.

"I think it's a foul from Kane on Kabasele, he pushed him with his hands. I think we are losing something. It's very weird, you think VAR is helping football but then it's not."

Sanchez Flores was also asked about Deulofeu's appeal for a penalty.

"It's a penalty, I have no idea [why it wasn't given]," he said

The Spaniard rued the fact that his side, who remain bottom of the table, could not take all the points after a mature display against last season's Champions League finalists.

"I think we deserved the three points because in the end we didn't concede very clear chances," he added.

"It's difficult to come here and control the game. All we could do was defend well and limit the opponent and that's what we did."

Tottenham coach Mauricio Pochettino said the mistake on the VAR screen had nothing to do with his club and was a Premier League issue.

He also said the way his side managed to salvage a point might help steer them back on course after a rotten run, including a 7-2 thrashing at the hands of Bayern Munich and a 3-0 loss to Brighton and Hove Albion.

"After Bayern our confidence was on the floor. It was so important the way we achieved the point in the end, we kept fighting," Pochettino said.

"I hope this is the first step we need to build our confidence again."

Mayfield, Matthews each fined for criticizing refs

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 19 October 2019 16:41

The NFL dished out several fines Saturday to players who criticized the officiating in last week's slate of games.

Among those fined included Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield, Los Angeles Rams linebacker Clay Matthews and Detroit Lions safety Tracy Walker, who were all docked $12,500 each.

Mayfield was fined for comments he made about officiating after a 32-28 loss to the Seahawks last Sunday. He was asked about a blindside blocking penalty called on Browns wide receiver Jarvis Landry.

"The refs are never an excuse," Mayfield answered. "I will probably get fined for saying this, but it was pretty bad today. The guy is squared up with him, running at him and he is lowering his head into Jarvis. What is [Landry] supposed to do? Avoid him? This is not bullfighting. I don't know. It ticks me off."

Matthews criticized refs on Twitter on Monday, one day after the Rams dropped their third straight game, a 20-7 loss to the division-rival 49ers.

"The storyline for the 2019 season continues to be the refs inability to make the accurate and correct calls week in and week out," Matthews tweeted. "Al Riveron continues to blindly side with his refs and the current status quo. Something must change! Zero accountability."

Walker was flagged for unnecessary roughness for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Packers receiver Geronimo Allison in Detroit's 23-22 loss to Green Bay on Monday night. After the game, Walker said the call was "awful."

"I felt like I went for the ball and [it] just so happened we collided, but I was looking for the ball. It was an awful call by them. It is what it is, though," he said.

ESPN's Jake Trotter and Michael Rothstein contributed to this report.
