History makers, first titles decided in Westchester

Published in Table Tennis
Saturday, 12 October 2019 16:02

At the final hurdle Thorsten Boomhuis and Holger Teppe accounted for Nevin Kumar and Ilya Rozenblat of the United States (11-9, 6-11, 11-5), Asako Katagiri and Yurie Kato beat the combination of Croatia’s Vlatka Dragia and Denmark’s Elisabeth Ilbal (11-8, 7-11, 11-8).

Success and it was success in a quite unique atmosphere, there is feeling of unity and delight at the tournament actually being staged; it is combined with the competitive desire to be world champion.

“I don’t think I have ever been so calm before a final; Holger was there, I could play with control. Playing here is a great motivation; since playing table tennis my movement is now much better and I’m on a low medication.” Thorsten Boomhuis

Notably Thorsten Boomhuis promotes “Ping Pong Parkinson’s” in Germany via the website pingpongparkinson.de and the Facebook page pingpongparkinson.de .

However, in Westchester the focus was directed towards competition; more certainly Holger Teppe no mean player.

“We both had good focus today, even though it was one game each I was confident that we could win; however, I must say we had strong opponents in the final.” Holger Teppe

Strong opponents and opponents who most certainly merited the greatest respect; Nevin Kumar has a mechanical valve in his heart to keep him alive. Significantly he is a member of the United States Table Tennis Paralympic Programme.

“It feels really good to be here, the medal is a bonus, I’ve been promoting Parkinson’s table tennis for six years; I had the mechanical heart since I was born, I started playing table tennis when I was four years old, the condition for me is now just normal. I want to see Parkinson’s included in the Paralympic Games.” Nevin Kumar

Likewise Ilya Rozenblat was not too disappointed at second place.

“It was pretty good today, we did not expect to reach the final, we made some mistakes. It’s a ground breaking tournament, a privilege to play. I hope we can see this tournament every year; two years is too long, a person’s health can deteriorate so much.” Holger Teppe

Meanwhile, for Asako Katagiri and Yurie Kato the long journey was vindicated.

“We are very pleased to win gold but more importantly it’s about being able to play in a World Championships; it’s a great experience. Ping Pong Parkinson’s combines mind and body together. I’m a little surprised we won.” Yurie Kato

Certainly, Asako Katagiri and Yurie Kato proved a partnership in harmony even though they live miles apart, Yurie is from Nigata, Asako from Chiba.

“We had very little opportunity to practise together. Now we are really good friends.” Asako Katagiri

Success for Asako Katagiri and Yurie Kato but the overriding feeling is one of participation.

“I am really excited to play here; I must admit I was nervous before the final.” Vlatka Dragia

Significantly both Vlatka Dragia and Elisabeth Ilbal played table tennis before contracting Parkinson’s and are returning to the sport; not only are they returning they are actively promoting the concept.

“I run Curey Parkinson’s, it’s a club we organise for people with Parkinson’s; no Parkinson’s no entry! In addition to table tennis we have boxing , fitness sessions and cycling. We have some 16 table tennis players.” Elisabeth Ilbal

Doubles concluded, attention now turns to the singles events, play concludes in Westchester on Sunday 13th October.

US Open champions Ali Farag and Nouran Gohar

Gohar fights back to win from match ball down in thriller
By SEAN REUTHE – Squash Mad Correspondent

Egyptian duo Nouran Gohar and Ali Farag captured the 2019 FS Investments U.S. Open Squash Championships titles earlier today at Philadelphia’s Drexel University after overcoming compatriots Nour El Tayeb and Mohamed ElShorbagy to win the first PSA Platinum event of the 2019-20 season.

World No.5 Gohar has made it back-to-back Platinum titles after also taking the honours at the British Open in May, but the 22-year-old had to battle back from two games down and championship ball down to claim the 10th title of her career.

El Tayeb won the 2017 edition of the event alongside husband Farag as they became the first married couple in sporting history to win the same major title on the same day. And it looked like a repeat could be on the cards after a blistering start from El Tayeb saw the World No.3 power to a two-game lead.

Gohar regained her composure in the third, imposing her powerful game to earn an early lead 4-1 and remaining level with El Tayeb at 9-all.

Gohar earned her first game ball at 10-9, but an El Tayeb responded with two winners of her own to hold a championship ball at 11-10, which Gohar fended off. Pivotal extra-time rallies ensued going both ways until Gohar converted her third game ball at 14-12.

In the fourth, El Tayeb sped to a 5-1 lead, appearing to have regained her devastating form, but Gohar once again staged a comeback to pull away from 8-all and force a fifth 11-8.

The decisive fifth remained close until 7-all at which point Gohar forced two strokes and two errors to clinch the match 11-7, bringing the crowd to their feet.

“I can’t believe it,” said Gohar after the match. “It was so tough out there, I felt my legs burning and it was like I was doing court sprints with Nour out there in the first two games. I just tried to hang in there and I didn’t want the crowd to be upset about a bad final match. I was thinking ‘that’s the worst final ever’, but it turns out, and I hope, it was a good one.

“I was really nervous and I thought ‘just fight, you didn’t work that hard to just let it go’, so for each point I was just telling myself to fight. I tried to adapt, I knew that my plan wasn’t working and I thought when the opportunity came to just take a risk and see how it goes.

“The crowd was amazing and the best ever, I think even better than an Egyptian crowd. It’s really nice for us to have such a good crowd and it cheers you on when you are down.”

While El Tayeb narrowly missed out on taking the women’s crown on World Squash Day, Farag made no mistake in adding to his 17 PSA Tour titles as a masterclass of a performance saw him end ElShorbagy’s unbeaten start to the season in a free-flowing match that saw only four decisions made by the referee throughout the entirety of the 40-minute contest.

Ali Farag on top against Mohamed ElShorbagy

ElShorbagy has already won the J.P. Morgan China Open and Oracle NetSuite Open over the past month, beating Farag in the final of the former, while he was on a 12-match unbeaten run coming into today’s title decider.

But the three-time U.S. Open champion was powerless to prevent his opponent from taking a 3-0 win today. Farag was sublime as he controlled the rallies right from the off, and after claiming a comfortable 11-4 victory in the opening game, he went in for the kill in games two and three, with an off-the-pace ElShorbagy failing to lunge properly in the final game.

Farag becomes the third Egyptian to win the U.S. Open twice after ElShorbagy and the legendary Amr Shabana, while it is his first PSA Tour title of the season.

“To be winning not only a major, but the U.S. Open which is one of the most prestigious tournaments we have on the calendar, it feels amazing,” Farag said.

“It’s a good day for the family, I can’t be too disappointed but there is no one I hate more in this building than Nouran Gohar right now! I’m kidding, both Nouran and Nour played an amazing match and that’s how squash should be played.

“Obviously I’m very proud with how I played as well. Mohamed has had an unbelievable start to the season, to be unbeaten in 12 matches in a row, and I was one of the victims, so to get the win today feels amazing.”

In addition to their earnings of $25,000, both Farag and Gohar qualify for the season-ending PSA World Tour Finals, which will take place in June, 2020.

The PSA World Tour Finals features a men’s and women’s draw containing the reigning PSA World Champions and all Platinum title winners.

Remaining spots are allocated to the highest-placed players on the Road to Egypt Standings, with points on offer at all PSA World Tour events.

The next PSA World Tour event will be the 2019-20 CIB PSA Women’s World Championships, which takes place in front of Cairo’s iconic Great Pyramid of Giza between October 24 – November 1.

A men’s Platinum event – the CIB Egyptian Squash Open – will also be held alongside it.

FS Investments US Open 2019, Daskalakis Athletic Center, Drexel University, Philadelphia, USA. (PSA World Tour Platinum: Equal prize money of $185,500 for both men and women).

Men’s Final:
[1] Ali Farag (EGY) bt [2] Mohamed ElShorbagy (EGY) 3-0: 11-4, 11-7, 11-2 (40m)

Women’s Final:
[3] Nouran Gohar (EGY) bt [4] Nour El Tayeb (EGY) 3-2: 3-11, 8-11, 14-12, 11-8, 11-7 (67m)

Wales wing Hallam Amos says he is ready to step in at fly-half during the final Rugby World Cup group game against Uruguay.

With Dan Biggar injured, Rhys Patchell is the only other recognised specialist 10 in the squad and starts in Kumamoto.

Amos is among the options to slot into fly-half if Patchell is replaced.

"Gats [Warren Gatland] has said we've got a few options there so I am happy to step in if need be," said Amos.

This is despite Amos, who also plays full-back, having never played senior rugby at 10.

Gatland has said Amos, centre Hadleigh Parkes and the two replacement scrum-halves Tomos Williams and Gareth Davies are the candidates for Patchell's cover.

"I last played 10 at Monmouth School when I was about 14 or 15," said Amos.

"So it's been a while. Hadleigh has played there too for the Scarlets. I played with Justin Tipuric for years, when he crossed to the Sevens he was one of the most talented players, so could do a job there as well.

"There are a few who can cover there. If it's my name that is chucked into the ring I will feel comfortable being there."

Warren Gatland revealed Wales have been training with Amos at 10 in the build-up to Uruguay.

"It's been good," said Amos.

"In the last couple of weeks I have been trying to emulate Bernard Foley for Australia and then Ben Volavola, the Fijian, so it's been fun.

"It is exciting because you have your hands on the ball early and have a chance to scan. It's a great place to play when teams are fatigued.

"As wings we are given licence to get in at first-receiver. It's a number on your back in the backs, you become accustomed to playing across the park.

"As soon as the first phase is done you often find yourself at first-receiver.

"I am left-footed as well so I am often there for a kicking option. It comes naturally, but hopefully Patchy [Patchell] is ready for a full 80 minutes."

Amos starts on the wing and is keen to impress as one of five players who had no part in the victories over Georgia, Australia and Fiji which put Wales into the quarter-finals.

Gatland's side are on the verge of winning Pool D and setting up a quarter-final against France in Oita on Sunday, 20 October.

Locks Adam Beard and Bradley Davies, hooker Ryan Elias and scrum-half Aled Davies have also had to bide their time.

"Gats has spoken to us about how it's an opportunity," said Amos.

"You just need to get into the game, because there are seven or eight of us who have not played a lot.

"It's Uruguay's last game and like Fiji they will come out all guns blazing, so it will be a great occasion."

Still only 25, medical student Amos has had his fair share of injuries to overcome with four shoulder operations, dislocated elbows and ankle injuries to his name.

It is also two years since his last Test start on the wing having featured at full-back in that time for Wales.

"I played all of last season on the wing for the Dragons," said Amos.

"Full-back is my preferred position, but as with 10 you often find yourself in different positions."

Aki upset by red card - Ireland coach Schmidt

Published in Rugby
Saturday, 12 October 2019 06:55

Coach Joe Schmidt said Bundee Aki was "devastated" by his first-half red card after Ireland beat Samoa 47-5 to book a World Cup quarter-finals spot.

Centre Aki's 29th-minute dismissal for a high hit on Ulupano Seuteni came when Ireland led 21-5, but they did not concede for the rest of the game.

Aki, 29, is of Samoan descent and was clearly upset as he left the pitch.

"We are happy with the result and performance but disappointed we didn't finish with 15 players," said Schmidt.

"It's devastating for Bundee. He knows the Samoan players really well."

Aki's World Cup could be over following his red card and he faces an anxious wait to see if he is handed any further sanction.

Earlier, Samoa hooker Seilala Lam had been yellow-carded for a similar high shot, but he had tried to lower his point of contact while Aki remained upright and referee Nic Berry ruled there was "a high degree of danger".

"I rate Nic Berry and I think he is a very good referee, so it is hard to argue at the moment," added Schmidt.

Samoa were almost as distraught as the Irish over Aki's red card and coach Steve Jackson said they would willingly make representations to help the 29-year-old escape further sanction.

"I hope no further sanction goes on," said Samoa coach Steve Jackson, who lost two players to red cards through the course of the tournament.

"I've known Bundee for a long, long time, he's a great man with great character.

"Hopefully the powers that be see some sense and he gets to continue on in the tournament because he's a great kid."

Ireland captain Rory Best said they had been mindful not to panic following Aki's premature exit.

"We had to leave some defensive rucks alone and make sure we had numbers on feet," said the 37-year-old hooker.

"We've overcome red cards before. It's never ideal but it shows a lot of character about a squad that whenever you go down a man, how you adapt to that.

"Ultimately there was no panic. There was a lot of collective. We just continued to attack them."

Best said that the team's display in the seven-try win "maybe wasn't that pretty but it was effective".

"After the Japan game we knew 10 points would get us through, and we got that. The boys rolled up their sleeves.

"The big thing is that we never panicked [after the Japan game]."

Rugby World Cup 2019: Namibia-Canada off amid safety fears

Published in Rugby
Saturday, 12 October 2019 14:48

Sunday's World Cup Pool B match between Namibia and Canada in Kamaishi will not be played because of safety concerns.

Torrential rain and tornado-like winds from Typhoon Hagibis are affecting large parts of Japan in what could be the country's worst storm for 60 years.

Scotland are due to play hosts Japan in Yokohama on Sunday in Pool A and will be eliminated if the game is cancelled.

However, organisers said they "remain optimistic that Sunday's remaining matches will go ahead as scheduled".

The New Zealand v Italy and England v France games scheduled for Saturday were cancelled.

Scotland need to take four more points than the host nation to progress to the quarter-finals.

Namibia and Canada occupied the bottom two places in Pool B with only two points apiece.

Organisers said there had been "landslides and flooding" in the vicinity of the Kamaishi stadium and "along access roads to the venue following torrential rain" throughout the night.

"The safety of all involved in #RWC2019 is our primary consideration and fans are advised not to travel to Kamaishi or the venue, which will be closed.

"Ticket holders will be entitled to a full face-value refund."

Also on Sunday, United States are due to play Tonga in Hanazono, with Wales against Uruguay scheduled for Kumamoto.

Tournament Director Alan Gilpin said: "Kumamoto, Hanazono and Yokohama are much further south and therefore outside of the impact of the storm conditions this morning."

Scotland's World Cup game with Japan will go ahead on Sunday, World Rugby has confirmed.

Gregor Townsend's men would have been eliminated from the World Cup had the Pool A finale been cancelled.

The game was under threat from Typhoon Hagibis, with a switch of dates already ruled out.

The host nation lead Scotland by four points after three victories and a cancellation would have resulted in the match being declared a draw.

Group rivals Ireland have secured their place in the last eight with a bonus-point win over Samoa.

Scotland must now take four more points than Japan to progress to the quarter finals.

The pool runners-up will face New Zealand in the last eight next Saturday, while the pool winners will face South Africa next Sunday.

An inspection of the stadium in Yokohama by World Rugby took place at 22:00 BST on Saturday, with an announcement made nearly five hours later.

The New Zealand v Italy and England v France games scheduled for Saturday were cancelled.

World Rugby rules state that "where a pool match cannot be commenced on the day in which it is scheduled, it shall not be postponed to the following day and shall be considered as cancelled. In such situations, the result shall be allocated two points each and no score registered".

Vettel Leads Ferrari Japanese Front Row Lockout

Published in Racing
Saturday, 12 October 2019 20:47

SUZUKA, Japan – Sebastian Vettel earned his second pole of the Formula One season as part of a Ferrari front row lockout during qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix Sunday at the Suzuka Int’l Racing Course.

Vettel put down a strong lap of 1:27.064, which gave him the 57th pole of his lengthy Formula One career. Charles Leclerc qualified second, with his lap clocking in at .189 seconds slower than the lap put down by Vettel.

Qualifying, originally scheduled for Saturday, was postponed a day due to the arrival of Typhoon Hagibis.

“It’s very important to have got both our cars on the front row in qualifying in Suzuka. We haven’t done it since 2006 and it’s definitely a good start to the day. However, it’s this afternooon’s race that counts, so we must stay focussed and get on with the job in hand. We have made a step forward compared to Friday, running less rear wing to try and get more speed down the straights, which also helped with the car balance.”

Row two belonged to Mercedes, with Valtteri Bottas qualifying third ahead of his championship leading teammate Lewis Hamilton in fourth. Row three belonged to Red Bull, with Max Verstappen and Alexander Albon taking fifth and sixth.

McLaren filled the fourth row, with Carlos Sainz Jr. and Lando Norris qualifying seventh and eighth. Pierre Gasly qualified ninth for Toro Rosso, with Haas driver Romain Grosjean completing the top-10.

The only incidents during qualifying took place in round one, when Robert Kubica and Kevin Magnussen both crashed. Kubica’s car was too damaged to continue, but Magnussen was able to drive his damaged car back around to the pits.

Hafertepe Unbeatable In Creek County Fall Fling

Published in Racing
Saturday, 12 October 2019 20:55

SAPULPA, Okla. – Sam Hafertepe Jr. led from start to finish during Saturday’s John Christner Trucking Fall Fling to earn his ninth victory of the season with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series at Creek County Speedway.

Hafertepe’s 46th career National Tour victory tied the Sunnyvale, Texas, driver with Tim Crawley for fourth on the all-time ASCS win list.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve been out of the front straightaway, I don’t even remember what it feels like,” chuckled Hafertepe who reclaimed the National Tour point lead by 14 markers.

Taking lessons from the COMP Cams Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tire, Hafertepe was able to put his J&J Chassis anywhere he needed too throughout the 30-lap feature.

“This was an awesome Racecar. I don’t think there was a better car here all night,” Hafertepe said. “We didn’t touch it, we just left it alone, and we definitely got the balance back in this thing. It’s back to a dominant race car and going to Devil’s Bowl next week, that’s one of my favorite tracks in the world. I can’t wait for that.”

Taking the lead from the right of the front row, Hafertepe was trailed by Tucker Doughty for the opening lap before Matt Covington shot in second. Opening his lead to nearly two seconds, Hafertepe’s advantage dropped quickly as the leaders hit traffic on lap seven.

Caution working lap nine for debris, Covington looked for a way around Hafertepe but with no success. Opening his advantage again, lapped traffic was of little issue for the Heidbreder Foundation No. 15h.

Under caution working lap 28, slower cars in the mix shook things up behind Hafertepe as Roger Crockett moved by the No. 95 for second. With clean air to his advantage, Hafertepe raced to the finish with a 2.224-second advantage over Crockett’s Route 66 Chevrolet No. 11.

Battling a shower of power steering fluid over the final few laps that kept the No. 95 off the cushion, Matt Covington managed to hold on for his seventh podium finish of the season. Tyler Thomas in fourth was followed to the finish by Jordon Mallett.

The finish:

Sam Hafertepe Jr., Roger Crockett, Matt Covington, Tyler Thomas, Jordon Mallett, Howard Moore, Seth Bergman, Blake Hahn, Robbie Price, John Carney II, Alex Sewell, Scott Bogucki, Sean McLelland, Harli White, Brad Bowden, Garet Williamson, Lance Norick, Fred Mattox, Noah Harris, Avery Goodman, Tucker Doughty, Kyle Clark, Alex Hill.
