Top Quotes: Na opens up, Homa throws 'em back

Published in Golf
Sunday, 13 October 2019 06:00

From Kevin Na opening up about controversy surrounding his name in Korea to Max Homa partying too hard in Las Vegas, here are the top quotes from this week in golf:

“I’m fully on call. I didn't know if I was going to come play here or not. [Alicia is] always encouraging me to play and she has all the media officials' phone numbers, so if someone has to come get me off the course this week, they will.” - Peter Malnati said after he lead the Houston Open after the second round, while his wife was due to give birth to their first child at any moment

“The moment you drew your first breath, I was a different person.” - Suzann Pettersen wrote in an emotional letter to her son, Herman

"Some of my happiest memories are spending time with my pops on the golf course having putting contests. I’m looking forward to others enjoying time with their kids at PopStroke. This is a new way for individuals to experience the game of golf. It's about bringing people together." - Tiger Woods said in a release, after announcing he was entering into a partnership with putting course company, PopStroke Entertainment Group

“There have been too many rumors and false statements and it’s been very hurtful. ... Now I have a family and I feel I need to protect them and my name.” - Kevin Na said this week, when he opened up on the controversy surrounding his name in Korea and detailed his broken engagement

“I’m very determined to play next year. There is no hard, set date for my return, but, in my heart, I really want to be back for the Tournament of Champions. … I’m doing everything I can to get there, but at the same time, I have to learn to listen to my body. If I’m not ready, I’m not ready.” - Michelle Wie said about celebrating her 30th birthday this week, and entering her next decade with optimism and curiosity

''Our vision is to bring every shot in every PGA Tour golf tournament live and on-demand to our fans, and this is the first step to making that happen.'' - Rick Anderson, the chief media officer for the PGA Tour, said  when the Tour announced to live stream every shot from the 2020 Players Championship

“X•V last week was the best yet...she’s mine...still winning.” - Rickie Fowler wrote on Instagram, announcing he and his longtime girlfriend Allison tied the knot in a gorgeous beach wedding

“I’ve changed to a later flight twice today if u guys were wondering how my missed cut Friday night in Vegas went.” - Max Homa tweeted after missing the cut in Las Vegas and apparently partying too hard

HUMBLE, Texas – With the PGA Tour’s three-week Asian Swing beginning next week in South Korea, just three players in next week’s CJ Cup field decided to tee it up at the preceding Houston Open.

Two of those players didn’t stick around for the weekend – Michael Kim withdrew during his second round while Jhonattan Vegas missed the cut. But Luke List finds himself with a quick turnaround after playing into Sunday at the Golf Club of Houston.

List began his final round at 9:15 a.m. ET and delivered a strong performance, carding a bogey-free, 6-under 66 to finish the week at 5 under. He hit his first 17 greens, finding the bottom of the cup with a hole-out eagle at the par-4 12th, before just missing the green left at the difficult par-4 finishing hole.

“I didn’t even think about that,” List said of nearly going perfect in greens in regulation. “That would’ve been nice.”

Still, List will carry some momentum with him to Asia. He found out that he got into the CJ Cup field Friday and plans to fly to Atlanta on Sunday afternoon to spend a few hours with his wife and baby before taking a 15-hour flight to Seoul. From there, List has to catch a ride to a different airport and jet over to Jeju Island.

He expects to arrive at the course shortly after lunch on Tuesday.

“Long travel day ahead but I’ve had crazier travel than that, especially in my mini-tour days,” List said. “I’m excited to get over there.”

List, who will play for a fifth straight week in South Korea before taking a break, added that he wasn’t surprised to be one of few players to play Houston and the first leg of the Asian Swing. The CJ Cup is highlighted by Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth, Jason Day, Hideki Matsuyama and last year’s Houston Open champion Ian Poulter.

“A lot of the guys that are playing probably took this week off which is understandable with the long travel,” List said. “With Japan and China after, it’s hard, you know; you can’t play every week out here.”

Southgate warns Maddison after casino visit

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 13 October 2019 11:37

England manager Gareth Southgate has said that James Maddison has learned a lesson after the Leicester City midfielder was photographed in a casino a day after withdrawing from the squad for the Euro 2020 qualifiers against Czech Republic and Bulgaria with a virus.

Maddison, 22, had been expected to make his senior international debut against the Czechs in Prague prior to his withdrawal on the day before the Group A clash, which England went on to lose 2-1.

Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers defended Maddison last month following claims that Southgate was still to be convinced by the player's attitude, with the former Liverpool and Celtic manager saying that the midfielder "plays with a lovely arrogance but he's not like that off the field."

- Southgate says England 'not good enough' in loss
- Ogden: England midfield could limit Euro 2020 success

But speaking in Sofia ahead of Monday's encounter with Bulgaria, Southgate said that Maddison will have "learned" that representing England leads to a greater focus, on and off the field.

"Once a player has been released from a squad, it's up to them how they spend their individual time," Southgate told reporters in Sofia.

"So I guess what James has learned is that, if you are involved with England, there is an increased interest in you and an increased interest in your personal life and private life as well.

"It goes with the territory. It's a high-profile position."

Despite losing to the Czechs, England remain in control of Group A and a win in Bulgaria on Monday could secure qualification for Euro 2020 if Kosovo fail to defeat Montenegro in Pristina.

The game at Vasil Levski Stadium will go ahead with 5,000 seats closed off as punishment by UEFA for racist behaviour of home supporters during Euro 2020 qualifiers against Kosovo and the Czechs.

England's players have collectively discussed their response, should be there be a repeat of the racist behaviour by supporters on Monday, with Raheem Sterling saying on Friday that the team would put their faith in UEFA's three-step protocol, which leaves the situation in the hands of the match officials.

Southgate insisted, however, that his players remain focused on playing football and getting the victory which could seal a place at Euro 2020.

"I've always said we have as many issues to resolve as anyone else," Southgate said."So everyone wants us to be talking about football and it's the same for the players of both teams.

"But outside of that, we trust the authorities to make sure everything is in place and we are all -- everyone involved with the game -- focused on the football."

Alexis back at Inter after injury with Chile

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 13 October 2019 11:09

Chile captain Alexis Sanchez has been released from the squad to undergo further tests after suffering a left ankle injury in La Roja's friendly draw with Colombia on Saturday.

The Chile FA confirmed that Sanchez suffered "dislocation of tendons in the left ankle" during the 0-0 draw in Alicante, Spain, and will return to Milan to undergo an MRI. He will miss Chile's friendly match against Guinea on Tuesday.

Sanchez is at Inter on loan from Manchester United after a disappointing spell at Old Trafford, with Inter on the hook for £175,000 of his £390,000-a-week salary. He has scored one goal in four appearances across all competitions for the Serie A side this season.

Chile also said that Bologna midfielder Gary Medel suffered a right foot injury and will also miss the match against Guinea.

Neymar injury scare as Brazil held by Nigeria

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 13 October 2019 10:04

Neymar went off injured 12 minutes into Brazil's 1-1 draw with Nigeria in a friendly in Singapore on Sunday.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward, making his 101st appearance for the national team, touched the back of his left thigh as he left the pitch and was replaced by Philippe Coutinho.

A team spokesman said Neymar "felt discomfort" and would be examined by PSG doctors once he was back in France.

Globoesporte.com cited the Brazilian team doctor as saying the player was not in pain.

The draw extended Brazil's winless run to four games.

The Africans took the lead after 35 minutes when Joe Aribo found space in a packed penalty box to rifle in a low shot and grab his second goal in two international appearances.

Brazil equalised three minutes into the second half when Casemiro fired home from close range after he was quickest to react when a Marquinhos header came back off the woodwork.

Casemiro later smacked a header off the bar and Coutinho should have scored a cut back with five minutes remaining but the score remained at 1-1.

Since lifting the Copa America in July, Brazil have also drawn with Colombia and Senegal and lost to Peru.

Van der Sar on Man Utd role: I'm interested

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 13 October 2019 08:30

Edwin van der Sar has said that he would be interested in returning to Manchester United with the club still searching for a director of football.

The former United goalkeeper is chief executive at Ajax but said he would consider a position at United in the future.

- VAR in the Premier League: Ultimate guide
- When does the transfer window reopen?
- Premier League winter break: All you need to know

"Besides my family, the wife, kids and friends, I have two loves in my life -- Ajax, who scouted me and gave me the chance to shine in the world of football and Manchester United, who helped me to develop even at the end of my career," he told Sports Illustrated.

"'Of course I'd be interested in a position, but at first I think I need to learn a little bit more here at Ajax and develop myself even further.

"Let's see what the future brings, United is a fantastic club, with a great following all over the world.

"I'm the chief executive at Ajax, United are looking for a different position, a director of football, it's a different role. I know a little bit about football of course."

Van der Sar spent six years at Old Trafford between 2005 and 2011, where he won four Premier League titles and the Champions League.

The former Dutch international told ESPN FC that United's struggles are down to a lack of strong characters in the dressing room.

"I think for ourselves, when I came in the dressing room we had Ryan Giggs, you had [Paul] Scholes, you had [Rio] Ferdinand, [Gary] Neville and even Roy Keane at that time," he said.

"So I think there's always been strong characters. And I think for the last couple of years the strong characters have disappeared and [are] not making a difference anymore."

Van der Sar was part of the staff that helped Ajax reach the semifinals of the Champions League last season.

He was named marketing director in 2012 before being promoted to chief executive in 2016.

It's been 12 years since David Beckham absconded to Los Angeles from Real Madrid, in the name of bringing soccer to the forefront of American sports fans' consciousness. (Hey, he tried.) There were only 13 teams in Major League Soccer then, attendance was roughly 16,770 a game, and the LA Galaxy (shocker) were the most valuable franchise at $100 million. In that decade-plus in MLS, the era of the Designated Player, few if any have been as prolific as The Lion, Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Designated Player Rule -- a stipulation that each team can acquire up to three players whose salaries don't count against the team's salary cap beyond the league's max budget charge of $504,375 -- was enacted to draw marquee global stars to America. There have been stratospheric highs like Ibra, LAFC's Carlos Vela and Atlanta United's Josef Martinez in recent memory alone. There have also been catastrophic lows. Any Denilson fans in Dallas? How do Nery Castillo jerseys sell in Chicago?

But the advent of the DP and U.S. Soccer's Development Academy have yielded an MLS in bloom: 24 teams with two more coming next year (including Beckham-owned Inter Miami), attendance up over 21,000, 11 teams worth more than $250 million, 72 DPs in 2019 with an average age of 26 and a half, up from five and more than 31 in 2007. There have only been three 30-goal seasons in MLS history, all within the past 12 months: Martinez's record-setting 2018, Vela's record-breaking 2019 and Zlatan's 2019.

At 38, the Lion, Major League Soccer's highest single-season earner in 2019 and of all time, should have lost steam years ago. Zlatan's first top-10 Ballon d'Or finish was in 2005 at the age of 24; he's the only one still on an active roster from those 10 men. Ronaldinho just retired from a futsal stint in India, Adriano last played three years ago in the fourth tier of American soccer, and the rest have long moved into managing or front office work.

In the past 12 years, a Designated Player has taken up a roster spot roughly 500 times. No one has ever been better-paid or scored as regularly, on a minute to minute basis, than Ibra, who's notched 52 goals in 56 MLS games and, logically, spawned "best-ever MLS player" discourse. We took a look at the history of Designated Players in MLS as a marker for league evolution and how The Lion matches up among men.

Zlatan's getting paid

When Becks arrived in Carson, California, the minimum salary in Major League Soccer was $12,900 -- roughly $2,700 above America's poverty line that year -- but the average salary across the league was $103,715.18. As DPs were a new creation and something of a luxury, there were only five at that time: the Chicago Fire's Cuauhtemoc Blanco, New York Red Bulls' Juan Pablo Angel and Claudio Reyna, FC Dallas' Denilson, and Beckham, combining for $12,889,572 in salary, an average of $2,577,914.40. (The, ahem, lion's share of salary was Beckham's $6,500,000, which amounts to well over $8 million in 2019 dollars.)

Today? The league minimum salary is $56,250 -- still less than that of your average engineer, but a far cry from 2007. The average salary across the league is $414,803 and 2019's 72 DPs total $120,067,247 in guaranteed compensation. The average DP salary, logically, has levelled out to $1,667,600.65. Zlatan is, unsurprisingly, 2019's highest-paid player with $7.2 million in guaranteed compensation, which is also the highest single-season guaranteed compensation of all time. Only two other players, Orlando City's Kaka and Toronto FC's Sebastian Giovinco, have banked more than $7 million in a season.

Age is just a number

At the outset, DPs were typically older European stars who felt they still had gas in the tank, looking for a fresh start and a generous salary to boot. Thierry Henry tallied 51 goals and 42 assists in five seasons as a Red Bull, while Robbie Keane amassed 83 goals and 45 assists in 125 games for the LA Galaxy. Even Andrea Pirlo limped his way to 18 assists in three seasons at Yankee Stadium.

The knock on MLS has long been that its biggest names are past-their-prime European castoffs mingling with assorted talent. That may have been the case 12 years ago, when the average age of a DP was just over 31 -- it wasn't until 2011 that there was a DP younger than 24 -- but quietly, MLS has gotten younger and more competitive.

In 2019, 26 of the 72 DPs (roughly 36 percent) were 24 or younger when the season started, or if they were transferred midseason, at the time of the move. The average DP age across the board is 26.7. Vela, who turned 30 in March, notched at least nine goals in five of his seven seasons in Spain before becoming the face of LAFC and breaking the single-season MLS scoring record, set by Atlanta United's Martinez, then 25, in 2018.

The league has lost young talent in recent years, with Atlanta United's Miguel Almiron (Newcastle), Vancouver's Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich), Red Bulls' Tyler Adams (RB Leipzig), New York City FC's Jack Harrison (Manchester City) all leaving -- you can even go back to when Matt Miazga and DeAndre Yedlin were purchased by Chelsea and Tottenham, respectively. And yet, Zlatan waves all the evidence away with a dismissive, if gloriously tattooed, shrug.

Despite recently turning 38, Ibrahimovic has banged in 52 goals and added 17 assists in just 56 games. Of all players in MLS history with 50 goals, no one scores more often than Zlatan, who manages a goal every 91.4 minutes. Martinez, at 92.8, is the only other player in that club who averages a goal every less than 128 minutes.

Performance: Zlatan is at the top of the class

When it comes to getting bang for your buck, very few have delivered more than Ibrahimovic. In fact, only two players, Martinez and Vela, have delivered a higher expected goals total (xG) than Zlatan. (Expected goals are the cumulative number of goals that would be expected to be scored taking into account shot quality and shot volume.)

In 2019, Ibrahimovic had 51 shots on target from open play, second most in the league behind Vela. Ibrahimovic was such an important part of the LA Galaxy offense that 259 possessions that he was involved in ended with a shot, and 47 possessions he was involved in ended in a goal, third most in MLS. Perhaps most important when it comes to setting up the offense, possessions involving Ibrahimovic advanced the ball 42.8 meters, most among any player with 20 or more games played.

And finally: Zlatan's the king of expected goals

Ibrahimovic's 21.16 xG total in 2019 was 14.71 higher than the average Designated Player. In fact, with Martinez and Vela recording their exceptional totals over the past two seasons, we are seeing the highest quality of Designated Player offensive play in MLS history.

In 2012, the average Designated Player averaged 3.90 xG but that total has risen steadily before it peaked in 2018, thanks to league MVP Martinez setting the MLS xG record with 34.11. Ibrahimovic's 2019 total would have led every single season before 2018, but this year he's joined at the top by Martinez's 2019 total of 23.22 and crosstown rival Vela's total of 22.75. In 2012, the average Designated Player had 33.7 shots and 4.32 goals. In 2018, those averages spiked to 59.53 and 7.86.

As teams have spent more money on Designated Players, they've also become more precise with the ones they sign, as 57 of the 72 Designated Players in 2019 were either forwards or attacking midfielders. -- Sachin Dave Chandan

Lamar 1st QB since Vick to run for 100 in 1st half

Published in Breaking News
Sunday, 13 October 2019 12:59

BALTIMORE -- Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson takes running the ball to another level when he plays the Cincinnati Bengals.

Jackson became the first quarterback in 13 years to gain more than 100 yards rushing in the first half Sunday, when he produced 111 against the Bengals.

This is the first time that a quarterback accomplished the feat since Michael Vick had 127 yards rushing in the first half on Nov. 26, 2006. It is also the only instance of a quarterback rushing for 100 yards in the first half of a game since at least 1991, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

In his only other meeting against the Bengals, Jackson became the first quarterback in the Super Bowl era to record at least 100 rushing yards in his first career start.

On Sunday, Jackson darted around the Bengals for 71 yards on Baltimore's opening drive, capping that first series with a 21-yard touchdown run. Many of Jackson's runs came off the run option and weren't designed ones.

Jackson cracked 100 yards on a 29-yard scramble that ended the first half. He averaged 12.3 yards on nine runs.

The Bengals entered Sunday's game with the second-worst run defense in the NFL. Cincinnati is allowing 167.6 yards rushing per game.

Last Sunday, Jackson tied the NFL record for the fastest quarterback to reach 1,000 yards rushing for a career. He and teammate Robert Griffin III each eclipsed 1,000 yards rushing in 21 games.

Through Week 5, Jackson led all quarterbacks in rushing with 308 yards. That's 100 more than any other quarterback.

This marked Jackson's third 100-yard rushing game of his career. He gained 120 yards rushing against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 2 this season, and he totaled 119 yards rushing last season against the Bengals in his first career start.

Jackson has also shown off his arm this year. On Sunday he also became the fourth quarterback in the past 15 seasons to produce 150 yards passing and 100 yards rushing in a half.

LSU jumps to No. 2; Georgia falls to 10th

Published in Breaking News
Sunday, 13 October 2019 12:25

NEW YORK -- LSU moved up to No. 2 in the Associated Press college football poll, giving the Southeastern Conference the top two teams in the country for the 29th time and putting the Tigers behind No. 1 Alabama less than a month before the rivals meet in Tuscaloosa.

The Tigers jumped from No. 5, past No. 3 Clemson and No. 4 Ohio State, after beating Florida in a matchup of unbeaten teams Saturday night. LSU received 12 first-place votes Sunday in the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank while Alabama received 30 first-place votes and is No. 1 for the third consecutive week. The Crimson Tide host the Tigers on Nov. 9.

One conference has held the top two spots 75 times since the AP poll started in 1936, none more than the SEC. The now-defunct Big Eight is next with 23.

Clemson received 11 first-place votes Sunday, and Ohio State had nine. Oklahoma was No. 5 and Wisconsin became the first new team to crack the top six after Georgia suffered the biggest upset of the season so far. The Bulldogs dropped from No. 3 to No. 10 after losing at home to South Carolina in double overtime.

Georgia is the highest-ranked team to lose to an unranked team this season. The Bulldogs had been steady at No. 3 since the preseason. They were among a season-high eight ranked teams to lose this weekend, including four to unranked teams.

Penn State moved up to No. 7. Florida's loss at LSU cost the ninth-ranked Gators two spots. Notre Dame was No. 8, two spots ahead of Georgia, which won a close game at home against the Irish last month.

Texas slipped four spots to No. 15, the highest-ranked team with two losses. The Longhorns lost Saturday to Oklahoma and fell to LSU early in the season. Both losses were to current top-five teams, each by seven points.

POLL POINTS

It is the 27th time the SEC has had the Nos. 1 and 2 teams in the rankings since 2000. The only other conferences to do it in that time are the Big Ten (eight times) and the Big 12 (once).

LSU and Alabama have been 1 and 2 (in some order) 10 times previously, including nine during the 2011 season, when they played as the top two teams in the regular season and in the BCS championship game. Alabama avenged the regular-season Game of the Century loss and won the national championship.

The Tigers and Tide were also 1-2 for a week in September 2013.

IN

Three teams moved into the rankings for the first time this season, and a fourth is back after a week out.

  • No. 20 Minnesota (6-0) is off to its best start since 2003. The Gophers are the only unbeaten team from a Power Five conference that had not yet been ranked.

  • No. 22 Missouri has won five straight since losing its opener at Wyoming.

  • No. 24 Appalachian State is in the Top 25 for the second time in school history. The Mountaineers will try to hang around a little longer this time. Last year, App State was ranked for the first time since moving to the FBS in 2014, but the Mountaineers lost their first game as a ranked team and never returned.

  • No. 25 Washington (5-2) fell out last week after losing at Stanford, but it bounced back with a decisive road win against Arizona on Saturday.

OUT

  • Texas A&M had been lingering at the bottom of the ranking despite September losses to Clemson and Auburn. After the Aggies got routed by Alabama, voters finally bailed on them.

  • Virginia is out after losing at Miami on Friday night.

  • Wake Forest lost for the first time this season and dropped out after falling 62-59 to Louisville.

  • Memphis lasted only a week in the Top 25 after losing at Temple.

CONFERENCE CALL

The Atlantic Coast Conference is down to one ranked team: Clemson. The last time the ACC had only one team in the Top 25 was Sept. 28, 2014, when Florida State was No. 1.

SEC -- 6 (Nos. 1, 2, 9, 10, 11, 22).

Big Ten -- 6 (Nos. 4, 6, 7, 16, 20, 23).

Pac-12 -- 4 (Nos. 12, 13, 17, 25).

Big 12 -- 3 (Nos. 5, 15, 18).

American -- 2 (Nos. 19, 21)

ACC -- 1 (No. 3).

Mountain West -- 1 (No. 14)

Sun Belt -- 1 (No. 24)

Independent -- 1 (No. 8).

RANKED vs. RANKED

No. 16 Michigan at No. 7 Penn State. Happy Valley whiteout greets the Wolverines.

No. 17 Arizona State at No. 13 Utah. Major Pac-12 South implications.

No. 12 Oregon at No. 25 Washington. Major Pac-12 North implications.

Popovich: Prefer Silver's leadership to Trump's

Published in Breaking News
Sunday, 13 October 2019 13:26

San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich on Sunday responded to criticism from Donald Trump, praising NBA commissioner Adam Silver's handling of the ongoing China issue as compared to the president's relationship to a number of foreign leaders.

"[Silver] stood by our nation and its principles. That's pretty huge in these days," Popovich told reporters before the Spurs' preseason game against the New Orleans Pelicans. "Sometimes, it's kind of Orwellian. You think we're living in a place where, 'Is this really happening?' But that comparison was pretty stark when you put our president up against those leaders when he's with them or talking to him and how reacts compared to the way Adam Silver reacted. I was proud of him. It was great."

On Wednesday, Trump had criticized Popovich and the Golden State Warriors' Steve Kerr -- two coaches who have critiqued the president a number of times during his administration. Trump was harsher toward Kerr but said Popovich also was weak in responding to questions about China.

"They talk badly about the United States, but when it talks about China, they don't want to say anything bad," Trump said. "I thought it was pretty sad, actually. It'll be very interesting."

Popovich was initially dismissive when asked about Trump's comments, saying "I'm too busy. I have things to do."

But Popovich then went on.

"All I did was make a comparison between Adam Silver's show of principle and courage in a tough situation, as opposed to how our president reacts when in the company of authoritarian figures, whether it's Saudi Arabia, North Korea, Russia or Turkey, whatever it is," Popovich said. "It comes off as really feckless, impotent, cowardly by comparison."

The NBA's relationship with China has been tenuous ever since Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey's tweet Oct. 4 that showed support for protesters in Hong Kong.

Silver, speaking in Japan on Tuesday, said he and the league are "apologetic" over the reaction that followed Morey's tweet but noted that "we are not apologizing for Daryl exercising his freedom of expression."
