Using three frontline quicks remains an option for Australia on their tour of India with Pat Cummins keeping an opening mind about the balance of the side that they will need.

The last time they won in India, on the 2004 tour, their bowling attack was based around the three-pronged pace of Glenn McGrath, Jason Gillespie and Michael Kasprowicz alongside the spin of Shane Warne and then some part-time overs.

Australia have the resources to go with a similar shape of team this time although the emergence of Cameron Green has given them greater flexibility. However, Green is expected to miss the first Test in Nagpur due to his broken finger so the selectors will need to decide whether to stick with the two-quick, two-spinner method employed against South Africa or back what is traditionally Australia's strength in pace bowlers.
Mitchell Starc is also unlikely to be fit for the first Test - and things may yet be tight for the second in Delhi - due to his broken finger suffered at the MCG, but Josh Hazlewood's impressive return from injury in Sydney, where he was threatening with reverse swing, means he could get more opportunity than presented itself on last year's trips to Pakistan and Sri Lanka where he only played once.
Scott Boland was left out of the final Test against South Africa and has yet to play a game overseas, but it could be an option to field him, Cummins and Hazlewood together unless the pitch is so persuasive of including another spinner.

"Potentially," Cummins said when asked about playing the extra quick. "[When] Cam Green bats at six you've kind of got three quick bowlers which is a bit of luxury as it is. [Josh] showed his class out there. No qualms picking him, you know what you are going to get and it's quality. Each game in India we might need to chop it up slightly differently, maybe one game it's three quicks and another it's one quick. We'll get over there and see."

Australia's second spinner at the SCG was Ashton Agar who went wicketless through 22 overs in his first home Test, nearly 10 years after making his debut. Agar is assured of his place on the India tour, and Australia are keen on having a left-arm spinner in their attack, but Mitchell Swepson and Todd Murphy are also in the mix for the tour.
However, there is an option where Australia rely on a combination of their part-time spinners to supplement Nathan Lyon, with Travis Head's development of his offspin making him a viable option. Head has taken seven wickets at 13.99 in his last seven Tests having not struck before then.

"It's a real option," Cummins said. "Think the squad will have all possibilities there. Really comfortable [with the part-time spinners] especially Trav, he's a slightly different offspin bowler to Nathan, a bit flatter, which could be really helpful over there. Probably underbowled him in this game so he'll be a big part over there."

Away from the bowling, the batting options for the tour are likely to include Peter Handscomb, who was drafted into the SCG squad when Marcus Harris was released to play BBL. He is the leading Sheffield Shield run-scorer this season with 571 runs at 81.57 and coach Andrew McDonald said he was unlucky not to originally be selected for Sydney when Matt Renshaw was preferred.

"He's a huge chance over in India, he's played really well in Bangladesh, India he's been there before," Cummins said. "He's earned the right by scoring a lot of runs in Shield cricket. I'm sure come selection time he'll be there or thereabouts. Always nice having a right-hander as well, we've got plenty of left-handers."

The squad is expected to be named later this week and will depart at the end of the month. There are plans for a short training camp in Sydney with the tour itself not including a warm-up match before the opening Test in Nagpur from February 9.

Hurts toughs through injury as Eagles seal 1-seed

Published in Breaking News
Sunday, 08 January 2023 18:53

PHILADELPHIA -- Jalen Hurts' return to the lineup wasn't dazzling but proved an overall success, as the Philadelphia Eagles clinched the top seed in the NFC playoffs with a 22-16 win over the New York Giants in Sunday's regular-season finale.

With a 14-3 record, the Eagles set a new high for regular-season victories, passing their mark set in 2004 and reached again in 2017. Philadelphia made it to the Super Bowl in each of those campaigns.

A third trip largely depends on the health of Hurts, who missed the previous two games with a sprained throwing shoulder suffered at the Chicago Bears on Dec. 18.

Hurts, who carried a questionable designation on the injury report this week, ended the day 20-of-35 passing for 229 yards with an interception and added nine carries for 13 yards.

"We didn't feel like there was more risk [of further injury] but I know he was hurting, and he was hurting bad," coach Nick Sirianni said. "But that's the kind of competitor he is, that's the kind of person he is, and kind of teammate and leader he is that he was able to go out there and tough through it."

Hurts' first pass was a 35-yard completion to good friend A.J. Brown. With that play, Hurts became the second Eagles player in franchise history with 3,500 pass yards and 500 rush yards in a season, joining Randall Cunningham, while Brown broke the team's single-season receiving yards record previously held by Mike Quick (1,409).

The coaching staff largely stayed away from designed quarterback runs with Hurts coming off an injury, and he did his best to avoid contact, mostly successfully. The offense wasn't as explosive with that dynamic missing, but it was good enough against a Giants team playing mostly backups with its playoff seeding already secured.

The Eagles clinched the NFC East title in the process, their first division title since 2019.

"I feel like coming into this game, I've been really pushing myself beyond measures to try and be available," Hurts said. "The risk-reward of playing [Sunday], whatever that was, we did what we had to do. We're the No. 1 seed and we're NFC East champs and that's the goal we set out to do. Now I can continue to recover and be ready for the playoffs."

The NFC East has now gone 18 straight seasons without a repeat champion (the most recent being the Eagles, when they wo

n four straight from 2001 to 2004). It is the longest such streak for any division in NFL history and also the longest active streak for any division without a repeat champion in the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL, according to Elias Sports Bureau research.

The Eagles are the lone NFC team with a bye in the wild-card round. With right tackle Lane Johnson (abdominal tear), cornerback Avonte Maddox (toe) and other key players dealing with various injuries, the extra time off will be welcomed.

"It's been tough, but I don't really want to make it about me. We just accomplished a great goal of ours," Hurts said of the last two weeks. "My whole thing moving forward is, let's prepare to play our best ball. It's been a great ride this year but the job isn't finished."

Nets' Durant ruled out after injuring knee vs. Heat

Published in Basketball
Sunday, 08 January 2023 17:11

MIAMI -- Brooklyn Nets star forward Kevin Durant was ruled out of Sunday's 102-101 win over the Miami Heat after injuring his knee in the third quarter.

The injury occurred with 1:05 left in the third quarter as Heat swingman Jimmy Butler went to the rim and got his shot blocked by Nets big man Ben Simmons. Butler fell back into Durant's knee, and Durant stayed on the ground for a few moments but remained in the game.

Durant kept rubbing at his knee up and down the floor and had to be taken out when the Nets took a timeout about 30 seconds later. Durant immediately walked straight back to the locker room to get checked out and did not return.

Nets coach Jacque Vaughn said an MRI on Durant's knee will likely happen Monday.

While it remains unclear how serious this injury is, this isn't the first time Durant and the Nets have dealt with a knee issue.

Durant injured the MCL in his left knee during a Jan. 15, 2022, win over the New Orleans Pelicans and had to miss over 1½ months while rehabbing the injury. During his rehab, the Nets, who were 27-15 at the time and still playing with Kyrie Irving on a part-time basis because of the New York City vaccination mandate, went on an 11-game losing streak and were 5-17 in Durant's absence.

Durant also missed over a month in 2017 when he sprained his MCL and suffered a tibial bone bruise when former Golden State Warriors teammate Zaza Pachulia accidentally fell into his knee.

Durant has vaulted himself into the MVP conversation this season after averaging 30 points, 6.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists.

White Sox's Hendriks to start cancer treatment

Published in Baseball
Sunday, 08 January 2023 18:54

CHICAGO -- White Sox closer Liam Hendriks announced Sunday that he has been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma and will begin treatment on Monday.

"Hearing the word "Cancer" came as a shock to my wife and I, as it does to millions of families each year. However, I am resolved to embrace the fight and overcome this new challenge with the same determination I have used when facing other obstacles in my life," he wrote in an Instagram post.

Hendriks, 33, is a 12-year veteran playing for his fifth organization. He has been with the White Sox since 2021, saving 75 games for them over the past two seasons. He's considered a team leader who's extremely active in charitable causes throughout the Chicago area.

After Hendriks' announcement, White Sox senior vice president and general manager Rick Hahn expressed the team's sentiments in a statement released Sunday evening.

"Our thoughts and reactions at this time are for Liam the person, not Liam the baseball player," Hahn said in the statement. "I know the entire Chicago White Sox organization, our staff, his teammates, and certainly White Sox fans, will rally in support of Liam and Kristi during the coming months.

"Knowing everyone involved, especially Liam, we are optimistic he will pitch again for the White Sox as soon as viable. In the meantime, we all will do everything in our power to support our teammate and his family as they face this challenge, while also respecting their privacy."

Hahn said the White Sox don't expect to have an update on Hendriks' playing status "prior to Opening Day at the very earliest."

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma accounts for about 4% of all cancers, according to the American Cancer Society. The survival rate for at least five years post diagnosis is over 70%.

Hendriks, a three-time All-Star, is in the final year of a three-year, $54 million contract he signed with the White Sox after the 2020 season. He has 115 career saves and is hopeful to add to that total as soon as he's healthy.

"... I am confident that I will make a full recovery and be back on the mound as soon as possible," Hendriks wrote on Instagram. "I know with the support of my wife, my family, my teammates and the Chicago White Sox organization, along with the treatment and care from my doctors, I will get through this."

Finnlay Withington won the battle of the Brits to lift his first British Junior Open title, as Egypt’s Amina Orfi continued her superb unbeaten run in Birmingham to capture the girls’ title.

Withington and Orfi overcame compatriots Jonah Bryant and Fayrouz Aboelkheir respectively in entertaining U19 finals at the University of Birmingham Sport. Egypt won six of the 10 titles on offer in Sunday’s finals.

Withington said: “I’m really happy, I can’t put it into words. It is a bit of relief and I stuck to the game plan and just played really well.

“It’s always a hard game with Jonah, I didn’t really let him into the game. Towards the end I got a bit nervous to try and close it out but luckily I did.”

It was the first all-English final in the under-19 category since James Willstrop beat Peter Barker in 2002’s final.

Orfi, 15, found herself 2-1 down to No.2 seed Aboelkheir but as she so often does in British Junior Open finals, found a way to win.

She stepped up the court to take time away from her compatriot and stormed to victory by winning the final two games 11-2, 11-6 to claim her fourth British Junior Open title.

Orfi said; “Playing with her [Aboelkheir] is always more mental than it is tactical and physical,” said Orfi after her win.

“There’s a lot going on in Egypt and we’re main rivals and some people cheer for me and some for her, so beating her again for a second time this season is a huge win for me.”

Top-seeded Egyptian Youssef Salem claimed the boys under 17 title after he defeated compatriot Eyad Hossam in a four-game contest.

The US captured their second title of the day as Madison Ho overcame Egypt’s Malak Khafagy in straight games to lift the title.

India’s No.1 seed Anahat Singh produced a fine performance to capture the girls under-15 title as she beat Egypt’s Sohaila Hazem in four games.

All but one of the top seeds prevailed in the under 13 and 11 categories as Egyptian duo Talia Sherif and Hazem Sarwat claimed the under 11 titles.

Back rower Tom Curry faces a race against time to be fit for England's Six Nations opener against Scotland after suffering a hamstring strain.

He left the field in the 16th minute after his right leg was hurt during a tackle by prop Wilco Louw.

The 24-year-old, who has 45 caps, is now a doubt for the Scots' visit to Twickenham on 4 February.

"Even if a hamstring injury is the lowest grade, they're generally two to three weeks," said Sale director of rugby Alex Sanderson.

"I've just spoken to Tom and said get your head on for the Six Nations but don't stop being a leader for us over the next two or three weeks.

"He'll get a scan. He's walking around and it's stiffened up now. It's not one of those where he limped off the field so fingers crossed he will be available against Scotland."

Man City condemn anti-gay chants at Etihad

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 08 January 2023 14:38

Manchester City have condemned alleged anti-gay chanting during their FA Cup victory over Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The Football Association are set to investigate chants heard during the second half of the third round tie, which Pep Guardiola's side won 4-0.

The FA are also investigating alleged anti-gay chanting aimed at Everton manager and former Chelsea player Frank Lampard during the third round tie against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Friday.

A statement issued by Manchester City on Sunday read: "Manchester City strongly condemns the behaviour of a minority of fans who engaged in discriminatory chanting at today's match. We are proud to celebrate inclusivity in football and ask all fans to join us in creating a positive environment and atmosphere, where everyone is welcomed, accepted and has a fantastic matchday experience."

An FA Spokesperson said: "We strongly condemn the use of the term 'rent boy' and we are determined to drive it out of our game. We continue to work closely with the Crown Prosecution Service, as well as the UK Football Policing Unit, in relation to the use of this term.

"Part of our work in this area has been to provide the relevant authorities with impact statements from LGBTQ+ supporters, detailing how chants of this nature affects their experience and feeling of inclusion at football matches, so that a clearer stance and understanding on the chant can be established.

"We stand firmly against all forms of discrimination and we are striving to ensure our game is a safe environment for all, which truly embraces diversity and challenges hateful conduct both on and off the pitch."

Barca top Atleti to open 3-point gap on Real

Ousmane Dembele scored the only goal of the game as Barcelona beat Atletico Madrid 1-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday.

Xavi Hernandez's side took advantage of rival Real Madrid's 2-1 loss to Villarreal on Saturday to take sole possession of first place in LaLiga with 41 points from their first 16 games.

- Marsden: Barca earn pivotal win despite inconsistent Dembele
- Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)

Barcelona dominated the early exchanges, pressuring Atletico high up in their half and forcing them into mistakes.

Dembele gave Barcelona a deserved lead just past the 20-minute mark, dispatching an assist from a Gavi with a first-time shot to beat Jan Oblak at his far post.

Atleti grew into the game after conceding and Jose Maria Gimenez's powerful header just before the half just missed levelling the score as Barca clung to a 1-0 lead at half-time.

France international Dembele left the door open for Atletico after missing two quality chances in the second half to put the game away, but the hosts failed to take advantage.

Barcelona keeper Marc-Andre ter Steigen made a crucial save three minutes before second-half stoppage time when he tipped over an Antoine Griezmann shot at full stretch.

Two minutes into stoppage time Barca's Ferran Torres and Atletico's Stefan Savic were sent off for violent conduct as the visitors held on for the narrow win and a crucial three points.

The result gives Barca a three-point edge over Real Madrid at the top of LaLiga, while Diego Simeone's Atleti are in fifth place and outside of the Champions League places.

"We have lost three big points," Simeone said after the game. "The team played well after the opening 20 minutes. What stays with me is the 70 minutes after in which we played really well, individually and collectively. But the win didn't come with that performance, which is the important thing.

"The reality is that we lost the game. It's true the team did enough to get a better result, but it didn't happen. We did more good things than bad but games are won in the boxes. If we follow the line of the final 70 minutes, the team is going to compete as we want."

Potter says Pulisic 'out weeks' with latest injury

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 08 January 2023 14:38

Christian Pulisic will be out for "weeks" with a knee injury, according to Chelsea manager Graham Potter.

The United States winger was forced off in the first half of Chelsea's 1-0 defeat to Manchester City on Thursday in the Premier League after a challenge with John Stones.

- Ogden: Chelsea fans fed up with Potter as poor results continue

He missed the 4-0 defeat to Pep Guardiola's side in the FA Cup third round on Sunday, and Potter said after the match that Pulisic is set for a spell on the sideline.

"Christian opened up his knee in the game the other day, so we're still analysing it, but it is going to be weeks," Potter said when asked about Pulisic's injury.

Potter is facing a growing injury list at Chelsea, who have lost six of their past nine games. Raheem Sterling also missed the cup tie at the Etihad Stadium after being substituted after five minutes against City at Stamford Bridge.

"Raheem had an action, first minute of the game, he felt something in his hamstring so, again, we are analysing it," Potter said.

Striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was unable to travel to Manchester because of a back injury, while Chelsea are also without Reece James, N'Golo Kante, Ben Chilwell, Wesley Fofana, Edouard Mendy, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Armando Broja.

MANCHESTER, England -- Manchester City sent Chelsea crashing to a fifth defeat in seven games and out of the FA Cup as goals from Riyad Mahrez, Julian Alvarez and Phil Foden sealed an easy 4-0 win at the Etihad Stadium.

Chelsea failed to reach the FA Cup fourth round for the first time in 25 seasons. The third-round defeat means Chelsea's only hope of silverware this season is in the Champions League -- they face Borussia Dortmund in the round of 16 -- but on this evidence, Chelsea won't be lifting the European Cup in Istanbul in June.

Man City, meanwhile, advance to the fourth round of the FA Cup for the 11th consecutive time, facing the winner of the Monday match between Arsenal and League One side Oxford United.

Rapid reaction

1. Man City rest their big stars and still cruise past struggling Chelsea

Manchester City made easy work of Chelsea to book an FA Cup fourth-round tie against Arsenal or Oxford United, and they didn't even need prolific striker Erling Haaland to help them.

Despite the strength of the opposition, City manager Pep Guardiola started this match with Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne and goalkeeper Ederson on the bench. John Stones, Ilkay Gundogan and Joao Cancelo were also left out of the starting line-up.

But in an ominous warning of the depth that City have in their squad -- and of the lack of confidence within Chelsea's -- the home side had the game won before half-time by scoring three times to kill off Chelsea's hopes of a positive result.

- Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga & more (U.S.)
- Read on ESPN+: Ranking who will win 2022-23 leagues

Guardiola's teams throughout his career -- Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Man City -- have never suffered elimination at the first hurdle of a domestic cup competition, but Chelsea could have threatened that record had they been able to take advantage of City's weakened lineup.

But Chelsea team had lost four of their past six games prior to this fixture and, even before Riyad Mahrez's opening goal, it appeared to be inevitable that the Blues were heading for another defeat at the Etihad.

Chelsea played like a team of strangers without any kind of plan, while City performed as if they were being put through a routine training drill by Guardiola. It was all too easy, and the 4-0 winning margin flattered Chelsea more than City.

Unless League One team Oxford pull off a major shock against Arsenal on Monday, City are likely to face a much tougher test against the Gunners in round four. Although Chelsea were so bad here that even lowly Oxford could give City more of a game if they get through to face Guardiola's side.

2. Potter is becoming Chelsea's version of Moyes when he flailed at Man United

Graham Potter is fighting for his future as Chelsea manager.

The former Brighton boss might limp on until the end of the season, having only been appointed at Stamford Bridge in September, but with every defeat, the 47-year-old is beginning to resemble David Moyes during his disastrous season in charge of Manchester United. Moyes's downfall at Old Trafford was due to multiple factors, but Potter is repeating many of the mistakes made by the Scot at United.

The leap from Everton to United was too big for Moyes, and Potter now looks like he also needed a stepping stone between Brighton and Chelsea, rather than making such a huge move without the required experience.

Just like Moyes, Potter has stayed loyal to assistants and coaches from his previous job, taking them all the Chelsea, but they also lack the credentials required. And Potter is also repeating the Moyes mistake of being too honest and negative when speaking to the media -- after all, sometimes a manager has to talk things up, even when the situation is bleak.

But ultimately, the biggest comparison is results. Potter is losing all of his big games, just like Moyes, and his players are beginning to switch off. Chelsea's players appeared to shrink once Julian Alvarez put City 2-0 up from the penalty spot on 30 minutes and whatever message Potter is trying to get across, it isn't working.

Potter's lack of big-time pedigree, both as a coach and a player, always threatened to work against him if results went awry at Chelsea and that is proving to be the case. It happened to Moyes at United and it is happening to Potter. From this point onward, it is tough to see how he turns his situation around.

3. Chelsea fans cheer for Tuchel and Abramovich, signaling more troubles ahead

Chelsea's defeat at the Etihad consigned the club to their first FA Cup third round exit since 1998 -- a time before the days when trophies were expected at Stamford Bridge.

Since that 5-3 defeat against Manchester United 25 years ago, Chelsea have grown accustomed to success in all of the major competitions, so their supporters are growing increasingly restless at the prospect of no silverware this season.

But when they started to sing the names of former owner Roman Abramovich and former manager Thomas Tuchel during the second half, it pointed to trouble ahead for the new regime at the club.

Tuchel was fired as manager in September less than 18 months after winning the Champions League for Chelsea. The former Paris Saint-Germain coach had also taken the team to last season's FA Cup and Carabao Cup finals, losing both on penalties to Liverpool.

He was popular with the fans, but new owner Todd Boehly chose to dismiss Tuchel after a poor start to this season and replace him with Brighton boss Graham Potter. And Boehly, who has overseen a spending spree in excess of £300m since buying the club from Abramovich, is hearing his predecessor's name being sung by fans because they regard many of his decisions as making the team and organisation weaker.

Abramovich, a Russian oligarch, was forced to sell the club due to sanctions imposed by the British government because of his connections to Russian president Vladimir Putin -- but the Chelsea fans haven't forgotten how he transformed the club into serial winners. Boehly, an American and part owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, completed his takeover of Chelsea in May.

Both Potter and Boehly seem a long, long way from emulating their predecessors and if the team doesn't start winning soon, the noise from the fans will only get louder.

Best and worst performers

BEST: Riyad Mahrez, Manchester City

Scored a stunning free kick to give City the lead and was the best attacker on the pitch.

WORST: Kai Havertz, Chelsea

Gave away a penalty and did little else other than drift around the pitch making little or no contribution before being substituted.

Highlights and notable moments

There were lots of highlights -- as long as you're a Man City fan.

Riyad Mahrez started the scoring off with a sensational free kick in the 23rd minute.

A pretty blatant handball from Chelsea's Kai Havertz went unnoticed in the moment, but video replays don't lie.

After a brief stoppage, Julián Álvarez stepped up to the spot and scored.

This is about the time when it looked like Chelsea were out of it with no hope to wage a comeback.

Man City's Phil Foden made sure of it in the 38th minute.

After those goals, there was a whole second half left to be played, but this one was already decided by half-time. Mahrez added one more penalty in the 85th minute for the 4-0 score.

After the match: What the players and managers said

Chelsea manager Graham Potter on the result: "I thought we were second-best to a very good side. Obviously, we're not in a great moment ourselves and even though it was a cagey first 20 minutes we couldn't attack the back line well enough or attack as well as we'd like. Manchester City did really well in terms of stopping us do that but at the same time, we struggled. It's a fantastic first goal in terms of a strike from a free kick and then there was the strange penalty and it's then 2-0. We then had to chase the ball against Man City and we were caught between trying to commit more men forward and not being opened up. The first half was painful and tough for us all."

Potter on the fans chanting for former manager Thomas Tuchel and former owner Roman Abramovich: "We can't do anything apart from do our jobs better and work harder. We understand the supporters' frustration, that is understandable and we'll respect that. Our job is to do our jobs, to keep working, see the situation for what it is, and of course there are always other opinions, negativity and criticism because the results haven't been positive. That's part of the job and the challenge."

Potter on injuries for Christian Pulisic, Raheem Sterling, and why Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang didn't play: "Christian opened up his knee in the game the other day. We're still sorting of analysing it but it's going to be weeks I would say for him. Raheem had an action in the first minute of the game, a back-heel that was a bit strange and felt something in his hamstring. Again we're analysing that. Aubameyang had a tight back yesterday so was unable to travel."

Man City manager Pep Guardiola on Potter previously asking for patience from fans: "I would say to Todd Boehly, it was a pleasure to meet him, but give him time. I know results are important in big clubs but I would say give him time. I think the second half today is what he is and what he did in Brighton was outstanding. All the managers need time and he was right. We need time in the first season. I had results in Barcelona in the first season but we had Lionel Messi so one season was enough. But yes, everyone is an idiot [when it comes to managing a football team]. To play against Man City at the level we are at in the Carabao Cup or FA Cup is not easy. Not for Graham, Chelsea or any team."
