Warner also became only the second player to score a century in both his 100th ODI as well as 100th Test, after Gordon Greenidge, and became the eighth Australian to pass 8000 Test runs during the course of his innings.

Stranded Pitt players hitch ride with UTEP coach

Published in Breaking News
Monday, 26 December 2022 20:22

Several Pitt football players and UTEP basketball coach Joe Golding and his family found themselves in a real-life version of the holiday classic "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" on Christmas Day after flight cancellations left them stranded in Dallas before embarking on a road trip more than 600 miles long.

Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi told reporters on Monday at the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas, where the Panthers will be playing No. 18 UCLA on Friday, that Samuel Okunlola, Jake Frantl and Hudson Primus were stranded when they bumped into Golding, who was in a similar predicament trying to get home to El Paso.

"Joe Golding, head basketball coach at Texas-El Paso here in town ... him and his wife and child, they picked up and took our three guys and drove them because the flight was delayed to get them here for practice," Narduzzi said. "They got here late last night. Just want to give a shoutout to those guys."

Golding spoke to KTSM in El Paso about the impromptu carpool adventure, saying Narduzzi had approved it and that the players called their parents and traded information with Golding to make sure everyone was comfortable with the situation.

Golding, whose sister, Kate, is married to TCU football coach Sonny Dykes and whose grandfather and father were both Texas high school football coaches, said he understood the pressure of travel issues that come along with sporting events and just wanted to help however he could.

"I see these guys, they have Pitt bags on. They start talking about playing in the Sun Bowl and having to get to El Paso and there wasn't any cars left. And I was like, 'Hey, if we can find a big enough car, I'll take you guys home.' And they were like, 'Who are you?'" Golding said, laughing. "[The rental car employees] showed up with a minivan first of all. It was too small, and we couldn't all fit in it. Then they had like a big Ford Explorer. I said, 'Who's using that one?' He said, 'Nobody right now. But you can't afford that one; it's too much money.' I said, 'Just give it to us; we got to get home, man.'"

Golding said his wife, Amanda, and sons, Cason and Chase, sat in the back, while Frantl got in the front seat and Okunlola and Primus took the middle seats.

"We went to the gas station and loaded up for dinner about 9:30, 10 at night," Golding said. "Made one stop in Pecos [Texas] at the Pilot for some fresh coffee and a couple Red Bulls and made it all the way back, man."

Golding said he didn't think twice about the trip and just wanted to leave a good impression on behalf of El Paso and the Sun Bowl, which has always been known for its hospitality.

"Out here in West Texas, that's what we do," he said. "I would hope someone would do that to Cason and Chase if they were stranded somewhere on Christmas night."

Golding said the players told him they had 9 a.m. meetings and a 10:30 workout and he promised them they'd be there in time. He said they arrived in El Paso at 5:58 this morning and were able to make all their scheduled events.

"They even got a two-hour nap, I think," he said.

Narduzzi said he didn't know Golding before Monday.

"Great job by Joe and we appreciate it," he said.

Chargers bolt past Colts, secure AFC playoff berth

Published in Breaking News
Monday, 26 December 2022 20:22

The Los Angeles Chargers will return to the postseason for the first time since 2018 after earning a playoff berth Monday with a 20-3 victory over the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The Chargers entered Week 16 with a direct path to the postseason after jumping into the No. 6 seed last Sunday with a win over the Tennessee Titans, however, their berth came earlier than perhaps expected after the New York Jets, New England Patriots and Las Vegas Raiders each fell in their weekend matchups.

"It means a lot for our team," Herbert said on the field after the win in an interview with ESPN's Lisa Salters. "We've been through a lot this year as a team. For the guys to battle and keep fighting the way they have, it's been great to see."

It will be the first postseason appearance for second-year coach Brandon Staley and third-year quarterback Justin Herbert, who on Monday completed 24 of 31 passes for 235 yards with an interception.

"There's a lot of room for improvement," Herbert said. "We can get better. We left a lot out there. But the story tonight was the defense."

At the outset of the season, the Bolts were among favorites to not only earn a playoff trip, but make a deep run, after bolstering their defense.

A blockbuster trade with the Chicago Bears brought pass rusher Khalil Mack to L.A. and the Bolts signed cornerback J.C. Jackson to a five-years, $82.5 million deal in free agency, while also loading up their defensive line with Austin Johnson and Sebastian Joseph-Day.

However, the Chargers teetered through a 5-5 start, as several significant players dealt with injuries.

Herbert played several weeks through fractured rib cartilage that he suffered in Week 2, and was without wide receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, who dealt with a hamstring strain and high ankle sprain, respectively, for significant time. Allen and Williams did not play a complete game together until Week 14. The offensive line also lost left tackle Rashawn Slater to injured reserve after Week 3.

On defense, the Bolts lost edge rusher Joey Bosa, Jackson, and Johnson to injured reserve.

Bosa could still return, but the unit is otherwise hitting its stride.

The Chargers held Colts quarterback Nick Foles to 17-of-29 passes for 143 yards with three interceptions, while sacking Foles seven times. The Colts were 0-for-10 on third down.

The Chargers will take on the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday in what will be a home game for Herbert and Co.

"Limit penalties, limit turnovers, and I have to be smarter with the ball and that starts with me," Herbert said about what the Chargers need to focus on headed into the postseason. "We have to finish in the red zone. So, there's plenty of room for improvement, and we have opportunities to get better."

INDIANAPOLIS -- Two teams headed in different directions continued on their paths Monday night as the Los Angeles Chargers (9-6) won their third straight to clinch a playoff berth with a 20-3 victory over the Indianapolis Colts (4-10-1), who lost their fifth straight.

Neither offense was particularly sharp as L.A. quarterback Justin Herbert didn't throw a touchdown pass, threw an interception and lost a fumble. Meanwhile, the Colts turned to veteran Nick Foles as their third starting QB this season, replacing Matt Ryan who wasn't active Monday. Foles threw three interceptions without a TD.

The Chargers' defense was relentless, sacking Foles seven times.

Despite Indy's offense turning in another lethargic game, the Colts' defense continued to play at a high level, sacking Herbert four times.

Los Angeles Chargers

A dominant defensive performance, coupled with timely plays on offense, provided the perfect formula for the Chargers.

For the first time since 2018, the Bolts will return to the postseason, earning their first playoff berth under second-year head coach Brandon Staley.

Entering Week 16, the Chargers had a direct path to the playoffs if they won their remaining matchups. However, their postseason ticket came quicker than perhaps expected after the New York Jets, New England Patriots and Las Vegas Raiders each lost.

QB breakdown: Herbert overcame an uneven start -- which included throwing a first-quarter interception -- to find a way to get the Bolts moving in the first half. Herbert went three-of-six for 20 yards and the pick on the first three drives, then went 12-of-13 for 125 yards on the final two drives of the first half. After losing a sack fumble in the third quarter, Herbert put together a 12 play, 88-yard drive that resulted in one-yard touchdown run by Austin Ekeler that sealed a victory midway through the fourth quarter. Herbert finished 24 of 31 for 235 yards.

Promising trend: The defense struggled throughout most of the season, appearing to feel the effects of losing edge rusher Joey Bosa, cornerback J.C. Jackson and several linemen to injured reserve. But, the Staley-led unit is now peaking at the perfect time. For a fourth consecutive game, the Bolts did not allow any points in the first quarter, the longest such streak by the team since 2011. Foles was 0-for-4 with an interception and a sack on third down. Three players -- cornerbacks Michael Davis and Asante Samuel Jr. and safety Derwin James Jr. -- all intercepted passes.

Sustained excellence: Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen had 10 receptions in a game for the 16th time in his career, the fifth-most since he entered the NFL in 2013. In six games since returning from a hamstring injury that sidelined and slowed Allen for nine games, he has once again become a go-to target for Herbert. Allen caught 11 passes for 104 yards. -- Lindsey Thiry

Under the radar stat that matters: The Chargers' seven sacks were their most in a game since recording nine in 2016 against the Cleveland Browns.

Next game: vs. Rams (4:25 p.m., ET, Sunday, Jan. 1)

Indianapolis Colts

The Colts' third quarterback change of this wayward season failed to produce any meaningful offensive results, with Indianapolis continuing to struggle to move the football and put points on the board.

The Colts were again stagnant on offense, producing 173 total yards and being held to 10 points or less for the fourth time this season. Remarkably, the Colts finished 0-for-10 on third downs in the game. It was just Foles' second start since November 2020, and it will be remembered for misfires and an inability to escape defensive pressure. Foles threw three interceptions, completed just 17 of 29 pass attempts for 143 yards and was sacked seven times.

Biggest hole in the gameplan: The Colts came out firing the ball with an aggressive passing attack, despite playing a quarterback who had the benefit of only minimal practice time with the starting offense since training camp. Foles said after he was promoted last week that he had not thrown to the starting wide receivers and tight ends since the preseason, having spent most of the past several months working on the scout team. That showed up almost immediately, with Foles and his receivers struggling to connect, with a number of miscommunications.

The Colts are missing injured running back Jonathan Taylor, but the Chargers are also one of the worst rushing defenses in the NFL. The Colts didn't attempt to lean into the running game until the third quarter.

Troubling trend: The Colts again showed promise on defense, harassing Herbert and limiting Los Angeles in the running game. But something that has continued to occur in recent weeks is the unit running out of gas in part because of the ineffectiveness of the Indianapolis offense. The Colts' failure to sustain drives and score consistently has put undue pressure on the defense, and the unit hasn't been able to maintain its performance for four quarters. It happened two games ago in Dallas, when the Colts committed turnovers on four straight possessions. And it happened last week at Minnesota, when Indianapolis crossed the 50-yard line just twice in the second half. That resulted in a historic comeback win as the Vikings overcame a 33-0 halftime deficit.

Describe the game in two words: More disappointment. The Colts have lost seven of eight and five of six since replacing former head coach Frank Reich with Jeff Saturday. Specifically, Indianapolis has given up 113 points in its past three games. -- Stephen Holder

Under-the-radar stat that matters: Foles was 4-of-10 for 57 yards with three interceptions on throws of 10+ air yards.

Next game: at Giants (1 p.m., ET, Sunday, Jan. 1)

Blazers' Winslow sidelined by grade 2 ankle sprain

Published in Basketball
Monday, 26 December 2022 18:42

Portland Trail Blazers forward Justise Winslow will miss at least two weeks with a grade 2 ankle sprain, the team announced Monday.

Winslow injured his left ankle during a 101-98 loss at Oklahoma City on Wednesday and left the game in the third quarter. He will be re-evaluated in two weeks, according to the team.

A eighth-year pro out of Duke who played last season for the LA Clippers and Trail Blazers, Winslow is averaging 6.8 points, 5 rebounds and 3.4 assists through 29 games.

Winslow owns career averages of 8.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists over 344 games (128 starts) with the Miami Heat, Memphis Grizzlies, Los Angeles and Portland.

Leinster secured an impressive 20-19 away win over rivals Munster in a tight game at Thomond Park.

Gavin Coombe's converted try put Munster ahead 7-6 in the first half.

Tries in the second half from Scott Penny and Dan Sheehan edged the United Rugby Championship leaders ahead.

Munster were awarded a penalty try and a score from replacement Patrick Campbell set up a tense finale, but it was not enough to rescue the game for the hosts.

The win cements Leinster's position at the top of the URC table after an unbeaten start to the season, with Leo Cullen's men eight points clear of the Stormers after 10 matches.

The interprovincial derby was back in its traditional festive slot for the first time in three Covid-interrupted years, with a full house and electric atmosphere at Thomond Park.

After a frantic start, fly-half Ross Byrne settled the game down with a successful penalty to put the visitors ahead.

An arm-wrestle of a first quarter followed, with back-and-forth action as both sides struggled to gain the ascendancy.

Byrne added to his side's tally with another penalty just before the end of the first quarter.

A spell of territory for Munster in the Leinster 22 was rewarded with a try from number eight Coombes, who powered over from a short distance. Carberry added the extras to put his side ahead by a point.

The final action of the first half was an unsuccessful penalty attempt from Byrne. The game went into the break on a knife-edge, with the hosts 7-6 ahead.

Munster gained the ascendancy at the start of the second half and several acts of Leinster indiscipline culminated in a penalty try for Munster and a yellow card for number eight Max Deegan, who was judged to have illegally prevented Niall Scannell from grounding the ball.

Leinster hit back shortly after, with Penny crashing over following patient build-up from Leinster who started to dominate in terms of territory and possession.

The visitors went ahead with a try from hooker Sheehan, who tapped a penalty and used his powerful leg-drive to burrow over the line. Byrne added the extras with an impressive conversion from the corner.

Munster continued to battle and hit back with a try from replacement full-back Campbell, assisted by an excellent 20-yard pass from Craig Casey to put him into space in the corner.

Munster: Daly; Nash, Frisch, Crowley, Earls; Carbery, Murray; Kilcoyne, N Scaannell, Ryan, Kleyn, Beirne, O'Donoghue, O'Mahony (capt), Coombes.

Replacements: Barron, Wycherley, Salanoa, McDonald, Kendellen, Casey, R Scannell, Campbell.

Leinster: Keenan; Larmour, Ringrose (capt), Osborne, Lowe; R Byrne, N McCarthy; Porter, Sheehan, Healy; Baird, J McCarthy; Ruddock, Penny, Deegan.

Replacements: McKee, Milne, Abdaladze, Molony, Conan, McGrath, H Byrne, Turner.

Sabres' game at Blue Jackets postponed by NHL

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Buffalo Sabres' game at the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday was postponed by the NHL on Monday because Buffalo International Airport remains closed due to a severe winter storm that has paralyzed the region.

A makeup date has yet to be determined.

A travel ban is in place in Buffalo, and the airport won't open until at least Wednesday morning as a result of a storm that's dumped close to 50 inches of snow on the area since Friday. The Sabres were scheduled to travel to Columbus on Tuesday morning following the NHL's mandatory Christmas break, which runs through Monday night.

Buffalo has won four straight but hasn't played since closing a three-game road trip with a 3-2 victory at Vegas on Dec. 19. The Sabres' home game against Tampa Bay on Dec. 23 was postponed as a result of the storm.

Buffalo is next scheduled to play Thursday night, when it hosts the Detroit Red Wings.

Arsenal thrash West Ham to extend PL lead

Arsenal padded their lead in the Premier League with a barnstorming, come-from-behind 3-1 win over West Ham United at the Emirates on Monday night.

Arsene Wenger looked on from the stands in north London for the first time since leaving the club in 2018 following his 22 years as Gunners manager, as table-topping Arsenal moved to 40 points from 15 games this season.

- Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)

Second-half goals from Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Eddie Nketiah cancelled out a first-half penalty by Said Benrahma to keep Arsenal seven points ahead of Newcastle United in second.

"We were very dominant today, we were just lacking that final pass," Nketiah said. "But we kept going and once we got one we knew we'd get more because we could feel the atmosphere behind us.

"There's a real unity and connection with the fans and we want to build on it."

Arsenal looked lively in the opening 20 minutes, but it was West Ham that struck first with a penalty kick as Benrahma dispatched an effort from the spot following William Saliba's foul on Jarrod Bowen in the area.

Mikel Arteta's side spent much of the remainder of the first half in West Ham's defensive third -- showing off plenty of tidy one-touch passing -- but could not find an equaliser and went into the break trailing 1-0.

Arsenal quickly went from one down to one up before the hour mark when Saka settled Martin Odegaard's mishit shot and rolled it home past Lukasz Fabianski, and Martinelli lashed a tight-angled blast in at the near post to give his team the lead.

Nketiah provided Arsenal's third to cap a delightful team move, cleverly turning to his left after Odegaard picked him out in the area and finding the back of the net at Fabianski's far post to all but secure the points with 20 minutes to play.

Arsenal were playing their first match since the season paused for the World Cup and their first since key striker Gabriel Jesus was ruled out of action for three months with a knee injury while playing for Brazil in Qatar.

Any concerns the injury could derail Arsenal's push for a first title since 2004 would have been heightened when they found themselves trailing at half-time, but a high-flying display in the second half put those fears to bed.

West Ham, who have not won away in the league since August, had done well to keep Mikel Arteta's side largely out of the area in the first half but their defence gave way once Arsenal found their groove after the break, helped by some fantastic service from Odegaard.

Next up for Arsenal, who maintained their 100% record at home this season, is a New Year's Eve trip to Brighton & Hove Albion, while David Moyes and West Ham host Brentford on Dec. 30.
