Tom Kim and Jordan Spieth teed off together to start the Sentry Tournament of Champions on Thursday, marking the second time in a matter of weeks that the pair has spent some quality time together.

Originally from Seoul, South Korea, Kim calls Dallas his stateside hometown, which just so happens to also be Spieth’s hometown. So when Kim didn’t have any family around for Christmas last month, the Spieth clan welcomed the 20-year-old with open arms.

“He was really nice enough to invite me for Christmas,” Kim said after Round 1 at Kapalua. “My family wasn't home, and I was kind of by myself. So I got to spend some time with the Spieths and kind of babysit Sammy, which was really cool.”

Sammy is Jordan and Annie Spieth’s 14-month-old son and, like much of the golf world, is apparently a big Tom Kim fan.

“He’s like the Sammy-whisperer. I think they’re so close in age that it actually makes it nice,” Spieth laughed.

The Christmas feast featured prime rib as the main course and, according to Golf Channel’s Smylie Kaufman, Kim wasn’t shy about going back for seconds… and beyond.

“I was told he went back for, not only thirds, but fourths at Christmas dinner,” Kaufman said.

Between two professional golfers and the rest of the Spieth clan, the group was able to clean “everything dry.”

Now, the duo is taking on the first two rounds at Sentry together, with Kim carding an 8-under 65 and Spieth a 6-under 67 in the first round.

It’s a developing bromance we didn’t know we needed, but we’re excited to see how this budding friendship develops. Maybe Kim will get to return the kind gesture soon.

Hideki Matsuyama will defend his title next week at the Sony Open, and he’ll be joined by some big names making their way from Kapalua to Waialae.

Jordan Spieth and Tom Kim – who have been in the headlines this week after spending Christmas together – will make the trip from Maui to Oahu to tee it up in the first full-field event of 2023.

When Tom Kim didn’t have any family around for Christmas last month, Jordan Spieth's family welcomed the 20-year-old with open arms.

Matsuyama chased down Russell Henley a year ago to capture the title, ultimately making eagle on the first playoff hole after hitting one of the shots of the year in 2022: a 3-wood from more than 270 yards that finished a mere 3 feet from the hole. Henley, the 2013 Sony Open champion, is in the field again this year.

Other notables include Sungjae Im, Corey Conners, Adam Scott, Billy Horschel and Keegan Bradley.

Here is the full field for the 2023 Sony Open:

Suspended Ronaldo watches on as Al Nassr win

Published in Soccer
Friday, 06 January 2023 15:59

Cristiano Ronaldo watched on from the stands as his new team Al Nassr beat Al Tae'e 2-0 on Friday in their first home match since the Portuguese star's blockbuster arrival.

The 37-year-old will miss his first two Saudi Pro League matches after being suspended by England's Football Association (FA) for knocking a phone out of a fan's hand after Manchester United's defeat at Everton in April.

- Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)

According to FIFA's Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players (RSTP), any sanction of up to four matches that has been issued to a player by their former association must be "enforced by the new association."

The game against Al Tae'e was originally scheduled for Thursday but was postponed by 24 hours due to heavy rain and weather conditions impacting the stadium's electricity.

Ronaldo, who signed a 2½-year deal worth $75 million a year at Al Nassr on Dec. 30, was not included in Al Nassr's squad for Friday's match, despite media reports that the Portugal forward was going to make his debut despite having a two-match suspension.

While he took his place in the stands and waved to fans ahead of the game, Ronaldo was also captured watching part of it from the training room.

Both of Al Nassr's goals, either side of half-time, were scored by Brazilian Talisca.

Ronaldo will also miss Al Nassr's Jan. 14 fixture against Riyadh rivals Al Shabab. His first opportunity to play for his new club will be against Al-Ettifaq at Mrsool Park on Jan. 22.

There is also the possibility that Ronaldo could feature for a Saudi Riyadh Season select team in a friendly against Paris Saint-Germain and Lionel Messi on Jan. 19 at the King Fahd International Stadium in the Saudi capital.

With Friday's win, Al Nassr extended their lead at the top of the Saudi Pro League to four points over Al Shabad, having played a game more.

Rashford stars as United beat Everton in FA Cup

Published in Soccer
Friday, 06 January 2023 15:59

Marcus Rashford set up two goals and scored another from the penalty spot as Manchester United overcame a David de Gea first-half error to beat Everton 3-1 in the FA Cup third round at Old Trafford on Friday.

Rashford laid United's first goal on a plate for Antony after just three minutes and then did all the hard work before Conor Coady turned the ball into his own net to put the home side back ahead seven minutes into the second half.

The England forward then sealed the win deep into stoppage time when converting a penalty after a foul on substitute Alejandro Garnacho.

- Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)

Earlier, De Gea had made a mess of a low cross to allow Coady to equalise for Frank Lampard's struggling Everton on 14 minutes.

The visitors thought they had a second equaliser after half-time, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin's close-range finish was ruled out for offside in the buildup following a VAR check to allow United to seal a seventh straight win in all competitions.

In his first experience of the competition, Man United manager Erik ten Hag showed he was taking the FA Cup seriously by fielding an almost full-strength side, with the exception of Luke Shaw partnering Raphael Varane in the center of defence.

It was the reinvigorated Rashford, though, who stole the show, taking his run of goal contributions to five-straight games for the first time in the 25-year-old's United career.

"In terms of performances, it's probably the best that I've been so I feel good on the pitch," Rashford told ITV. "I'm getting into positions and areas to score goals. If I keep creating chances, I feel like I'll keep scoring.

"We're pleased to go through to the next round and more importantly we keep momentum going and winning games."

He was heavily involved as the home side raced into an early lead. After scoring four goals in four games since returning from the World Cup, this time Rashford played creator by breezing past a defender down the left of the box before laying the ball across the face of goal for Antony to slide in and apply the finish.

The goal will be a boost to the Brazilian, who had not found the net since scoring against the same opponents on Oct. 9.

It appeared at that stage that United would go on to cruise to victory, particularly when Anthony Martial soon shot just wide from 20 yards.

- Dawson: Man United make clear they're up for the FA Cup

But out of nothing Everton were given a gift-wrapped way back into the contest.

Only moments after catching a break when Demarai Gray's shot came back off the post and bounced inches wide off the goalkeeper's back, De Gea handed Everton an equaliser.

Amadou Onana did well to create the space to squeeze in a cross but De Gea was caught completely unaware to allow the ball to ricochet between his legs and fall for Coady to produce a simple tap-in.

United continued to threaten to go back in front. Martial was denied by Jordan Pickford when put through one-on-one while Rashford and Christian Eriksen also went close. But Everton, buoyed by leveling the score, were able to get more of a foothold in the contest as they sought to arrest a slide that saw them without a win since October.

The visitors' resolve, though, would last only a few minutes into the second half.

Right after losing Alex Iwobi to a worrying injury, Coady found the net at the Stretford End for the second time, this time sliding in and diverting the ball into his own goal.

The credit, though, goes to Rashford, who gave a full display of his renewed confidence, befuddling Seamus Coleman and getting to the byline before his cut-back was met by Coady.

Everton continued to show belief and briefly thought they had pulled level once more but Rashford's late penalty confirmed that they would be left to focus on a Premier League campaign that has seen them drop into the relegation zone.

Man United, meanwhile, seal an FA Cup fourth round spot for the ninth successive season as they seek their first trophy of any kind in six years.

Rashford 'unstoppable' right now - Ten Hag

Published in Soccer
Friday, 06 January 2023 15:59

Erik ten Hag branded Marcus Rashford "unstoppable" after the Manchester United forward scored for the fifth game in a row.

Rashford made two goals and scored the other as United progressed in the FA Cup with a 3-1 win over Everton at Old Trafford on Friday.

- Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)

It's the first time Rashford has scored in five consecutive matches for United after finding the net in every game since the restart following the World Cup.

"Marcus was the one who goes in front and showed the confidence and the belief and good movements behind, taking the players on," said United boss Ten Hag.

"I think he was 90 minutes a threat for the defending part of Everton.

"It is about bringing him in the right position so Marcus is doing very well but also the team so that he can bring his strengths in and be unstoppable with his speed and his dribbles."

Everton manager Frank Lampard was also full of praise for Rashford, adding that "nobody can stop" the 25-year-old when he's in the type of form he has shown since the World Cup.

He's on 13 goals for the season, already eight more than he managed in the whole of the 2021-22 campaign.

"As a striker, you measure goals and assists and definitely today he had two assists and one goal," added Ten Hag.

"He has fantastic skills and when he has that mental stability he can keep going, but that demands a lot from him and us, but when he keeps focus like that I am sure he can keep this process going."

- Dawson: Man United make clear they're up for the FA Cup

Victory over Everton was United's seventh in a row in all competitions. They play Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday before back-to-back league games against Manchester City and Arsenal.

"I think we have a good belief," said Ten Hag. "First of all it is about keeping the freshness with so many games.

"Today I could see the load was high so we have to make sure we get the right balance in load and relaxation and the players keep fresh for the good challenges because you know we want to face the big challenges -- City, Arsenal and Leeds -- and your physical performance has to be top."

MANCHESTER, England -- Manchester United survived a nervy FA Cup tie with Everton to book their place in the fourth round with a 3-1 win at Old Trafford on Friday.

- Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)

Marcus Rashford was involved in all three goals for Erik ten Hag's side, first crossing for Antony to score at the back post and then forcing an own-goal from Conor Coady. He got on the score sheet himself with a late penalty to find the net for the fifth game in a row.

Coady had made it 1-1 after a mistake from David De Gea, and Frank Lampard's team thought they had equalised for a second time, only for substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin to have a goal ruled out for offside after a VAR review before Rashford made the game safe in stoppage time.

Rapid reaction

1. Ten Hag is up for the Cup

It has become a feature of Ten Hag's first season that he doesn't take any game lightly and fixtures in the Europa League and Carabao Cup have been treated with the same respect as those in the Premier League.

United have put themselves in the race to challenge for the title and have got big games to come against Manchester City and Arsenal before the end of January. That didn't stop Ten Hag from picking a strong team against Everton, though, and it will almost certainly be the same when League One side Charlton Athletic visit Old Trafford on Tuesday in the Carabao Cup quarterfinals.

De Gea, Rashford, Raphael Varane, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Bruno Fernandes and Anthony Martial all started against Everton. It paid off.

Casemiro played a key part for Brazil at the World Cup and has started each of United's five games since the tournament ended. He's probably the one player Ten Hag can't do without because there is no natural replacement in the squad, but the fact that Casemiro started against Everton three days after playing 90 minutes against Bournemouth shows how keen the Dutchman is to win a trophy -- even if his priority remains the Premier League.

2. Antony: Good or bad?

It's still very early in Antony's career at Old Trafford but already a debate is brewing about him. On one hand, the Brazilian winger has scored four goals -- including one here against Everton -- and has filled a void that has existed for years on the right side of the front three.

But there are also occasions when he frustrates the fans, particularly when he's so keen to cut inside onto his stronger left foot. It's a rarity to see him touch the ball with his right at all, and opportunities to run past defenders are missed because he doesn't trust himself on his weaker side. It's something Ten Hag has mentioned before as an area of his game that needs to be improved. Only 22 years old, he has time to do it.

Part of the problem facing Antony is the fee it took for United to prise him away from Ajax in the summer. It's not his fault that he commanded a €100 million transfer fee and that United were willing to pay it, but it also shapes the way his performances are viewed. Part of the pressure comes with the size of the transfer fee and maybe the debate wouldn't be so fierce if Ajax had settled for €50m instead.

3. Everton show much-needed spirit

An early exit from the FA Cup will only heap more pressure on manager Frank Lampard, but at least there was a bit of fight in the way they bowed out. It's now six defeats in seven games for Everton, but the performance was much improved from the disastrous 4-1 home defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion on Tuesday. Maybe it's the big games that bring the best out of Lampard's players after the 1-1 draw at Manchester City on New Year's Eve sandwiched between horror shows against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Brighton at Goodison Park.

Everton's next two games against Southampton and West Ham United -- both in the bottom four -- will go a long way to deciding Lampard's fate. If they can show the same spirit as they did at Old Trafford, then they should have enough to pick up points and move themselves out of the relegation places. But two more bad results, and particularly defeat at home to bottom-of-the-table Southampton on Jan. 14, might cost Lampard his job. He can be pleased with parts of the performance against United but he needs for it to be replicated when the pressure is on in the Premier League.

Best and worst performers

Best performer: Marcus Rashford, Manchester United. Made the first two goals with direct, dangerous running at the Everton defence, and then scored the penalty.

Worst performer: David De Gea, Manchester United. The Spaniard made a horrible mistake for Everton's equaliser when Maupay's cross bounced awkwardly through his legs.

Highlights and notable moments

This, uh, didn't go quite as De Gea may have envisioned it.

As it turns out, it was perfectly balanced for Coady, as all things should be.

After the match: What the players/managers said

Rashford on his incredible run of form: "In terms of performances, it's probably the best that I've been, so I feel good on the pitch, I'm getting into positions and areas to score goals. If I keep creating chances, I feel like I'll keep scoring."

Lampard: "Marcus Rashford was probably the difference. A top individual talent can do that to you."

Everton: The Toffees will get a full week of recovery before returning to action in the Premier League a week from Saturday, when they welcome Southampton to Goodison Park.

No. 1 Alcaraz to miss Australian Open with injury

Published in Breaking News
Friday, 06 January 2023 16:58

Top-ranked Carlos Alcaraz pulled out of the Australian Open on Friday because of an injured right leg.

The 19-year-old from Spain wrote on social media that he got hurt "through a chance, unnatural movement in training."

The year's first Grand Slam tournament begins Jan. 16 at Melbourne Park. The draw is next Thursday.

Alcaraz won the US Open last September and moved atop the ATP rankings. That allowed him to become the youngest man to finish a season at No. 1 since the computerized men's tennis rankings began a half-century ago.

His rise from No. 32 at the end of 2021 also marked the largest single-season jump to No. 1.

This is his second significant setback in recent months, though. Alcaraz cut short last season in November after tearing an abdominal muscle while competing at the Paris Masters. That forced him to withdraw from the ATP Finals and Davis Cup Finals.

Still, he closed out 2022 with a record of 57-13 and five singles titles.

"I'd worked so hard to get to my best level for Australia but unfortunately I won't be able to play" at a tuneup event in Kooyong or the year's first Grand Slam tournament, Alcaraz wrote on Twitter.

"It's tough, but I have to be optimistic, recover and look forward," he said.

With Alcaraz out, No. 2 Rafael Nadal -- the defending champion in Australia and owner of a men's-record 22 Grand Slam titles -- will move up to No. 1 in the seedings for the hard-court tournament.

The Spaniards became the first players from the same country to claim the top two spots in the ATP at the close of a season since Americans Pete Sampras and Michael Chang in 1996.

Alcaraz's departure also removes a potential hurdle for Novak Djokovic as he returns to Australia and tries to win it for a 10th time to claim what would be his 22nd major championship overall. Djokovic missed the 2022 Australian Open after being deported from the country because he was not vaccinated against COVID-19. He is still not vaccinated, but restrictions have eased.

UConn, down to 6 active players, has game ppd.

Published in Breaking News
Friday, 06 January 2023 16:58

STORRS, Conn -- The Big East game between No. 5 UConn and DePaul on Sunday at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Connecticut, has been postponed because the Huskies don't have enough healthy players available to suit up, the conference said Friday.

The conference requires schools to suit up seven scholarship players for any game, and injuries have left the Huskies with just six active players, the school said.

UConn also was expected to be without head coach Geno Auriemma, who announced Thursday that he is taking some time off to recover from an illness.

Junior Aaliyah Edwards and freshman Ayanna Patterson were injured in UConn's win at Xavier on Thursday. They join sophomore Caroline Ducharme, sophomore Azzi Fudd, junior Paige Bueckers and freshman Ice Brady on the inactive list.

Edwards suffered what was described alternately as a right foot or ankle injury in the first half of the Huskies' 73-37 victory, diving over some courtside seats for a loose ball. It was not immediately clear when or how Patterson was hurt.

The school said it would not release any further details Friday night.

"At UConn, the health and wellbeing of our student-athletes will always be our top priority," David Benedict, the school's athletic director, said in a statement. "Our women's basketball program has unfortunately been affected by an unprecedented number of injuries this season. While it's unfortunate that we need to postpone Sunday's game, it's the right call to protect the safety of our student-athletes. We will work with the Big East and DePaul on options to reschedule the game."

Bueckers and Brady are out for the season with knee injuries.

Fudd, the Huskies' leading scorer, is expected to return shortly from a knee injury that has kept her on the bench since she was injured in a collision with Edwards during a Dec. 4 loss to Notre Dame. She has participated in warmups during the last three games as part of her rehab.

Ducharme has missed two games while in concussion protocol after suffering an injury in practice.

The Huskies' currently available to play include guards Nika Muhl, Lou Lopez Senechal, Ines Bettencourt and forwards Aubrey Griffin, Dorka Juhasz and Amari DeBerry.

Auriemma has missed four games this season due to illness, and it is not clear when he might return.

"It's been an extremely difficult month for me, and I've been feeling under the weather and run down," Auriemma said in a statement Thursday. "I thought I was ready to return, but I need a little more time. I'm going to take a step back to focus on my health and will return when I feel ready."

Despite the injuries, the Huskies have won six straight.

The school says those with tickets to Sunday's game will be able to use them when the game is rescheduled.

UConn is next scheduled to play at St. John's on Wednesday, while DePaul is scheduled to host Villanova that evening.

Browns' Garrett disappointed by Clowney's barbs

Published in Breaking News
Friday, 06 January 2023 16:58

BEREA, Ohio -- Myles Garrett said Friday that he was "disappointed" and "a little bit confused" by comments from fellow defensive end Jadeveon Clowney that prompted the Cleveland Browns to send Clowney home before Friday's practice.

"I knew he was frustrated. We've all been frustrated; we're not winning," Garrett said. "I wish we could've talked about this man-to-man. ... I wish he would have handled it a little bit differently."

On Thursday, Clowney told Cleveland.com that he was "95 percent sure" he would not be re-signing with the Browns, in large part because he believes the team has favored Garrett over him.

"You're all trying to get [Garrett] into the Hall of Fame instead of winning games," Clowney said. "I don't even think [Garrett] notices. I ain't trying to say it's him. I try to get along with everybody I play with. Me and him don't have a problem. It ain't his fault, and it's B.S., and I don't have time for it."

Clowney added that the Browns have "got their own guys, and I ain't one of them, so it's time for me to get my exit slip."

After Friday's practice, Browns coach Kevin Stefanski wouldn't say whether he would sit Clowney for Cleveland's final game Sunday at the Pittsburgh Steelers.

"I'm not going to get into my discussions with any of our players throughout the course of the season," said Stefanski, who declined to answer several other questions about Clowney. "We're all human. We all have things that come up throughout the season that we talk about, but I'm not going to get into the specifics on this one."

Defensive ends coach Chris Kiffin, however, confirmed later Friday that at one point this season -- Week 7 against the Baltimore Ravens -- Clowney refused to play on first or second down. Kiffin said Clowney initially had indicated to him that he couldn't play on non-third downs because of an injury. But Clowney was upset with how the Browns had planned to use him in the game.

"We practiced all week, and we get in the game and they want to move me. I'm not doing that s---. I'm old. I done my job. I don't have time for that," Clowney had told Cleveland.com. "I've made my money. I'm doing this because I love the game, but keep [doing things like that] and making me not love the game."

Clowney did not play on the opening series the next weekend on "Monday Night Football" against the Cincinnati Bengals, although he entered the game on Cincinnati's second possession.

Garrett said he didn't even realize Clowney was refusing to play on first or second down against Baltimore until the next week.

"I assumed he was hurt," Garrett said. "I just assumed something was holding him back."

Clowney has had a disappointing second season for the 7-9 Browns, who were eliminated from the AFC playoff picture two weeks ago.

After racking up nine sacks with the Browns last season, Clowney has only two sacks this year. He also sat four games with ankle and concussion injuries.

Clowney is a free agent again this offseason, having signed back-to-back one-year deals with the Browns.

Garrett, meanwhile, has a team-high 15 sacks, fourth-most in the NFL, and was named to a fourth Pro Bowl.

Garrett also has faced the highest double-team rate (31.3%) of any edge rusher in the league this season. Despite that, he's second among edge rushers in pass rush win rate (27.8%); Clowney's pass rush win rate is just 16.5%.

"If I'm the most double-teamed guy, it's hard to say I'm getting the most favorable matchups," Garrett said. "What I've done speaks for itself. Of course they're going to put me in positions to make plays. But they're also going to be positions where I'm going to get double-teamed. I move all over the line. [Clowney] has moved, as well. We're both moved to be put in favorable matchups. He's getting those same looks, at least that's what I see. And I wish we could have talked about it."

Garrett said his relationship with Clowney had always been "cordial" and that he didn't take the comments personally.

But when asked whether he'd welcome Clowney back, Garrett said he wants "volunteers, not hostages" on the Browns.

"If you feel like no one believes in you here," Garrett said, "then go where you feel like you're wanted and loved and appreciated."
