England have appointed Nick Evans as attack coach on a short-term deal for the 2023 Six Nations Championship.

Evans, who coaches at Premiership club Harlequins, comes into a new coaching set-up after Steve Borthwick was named Eddie Jones' successor in December.

Martin Gleeson had held the attack position under Jones and no update has been given on his future with England.

"Nick brings with him a wealth of different experiences as a player and coach," Borthwick said.

"We'd particularly like to thank Harlequins for their support in allowing Nick to work with us during this period. It's a great example of club and country working together."

Evans' deal with the Rugby Football Union is a short-term one and he will still work with Harlequins during the Six Nations fallow weeks.

The RFU confirmed he will return to his club position after the tournament.

Evans started coaching at Quins in 2017 following his retirement from rugby.

He played for Quins for nine years and internationally for New Zealand, winning 16 caps for the All Blacks.

Kraken send No. 4 overall pick Wright to juniors

Published in Hockey
Friday, 06 January 2023 09:58

Shane Wright, who went fourth in last summer's NHL draft, was sent to juniors by the Seattle Kraken on Friday.

The move comes a day after Wright captained Canada to an overtime win against Czechia at the IIHF U-20 World Junior Championships. He scored in the win against Czechia while finishing the tournament with four goals and seven points in as many games to help Canada to its record-extending 20th title.

Wright, 19, started the season with the Kraken but could never really garner consistent playing time. He was sent to the Kraken's AHL affiliate, the Coachella Valley Firebirds, for a conditioning stint and scored four goals in five games.

He returned to the Kraken and scored his first goal against the Montreal Canadiens. It became arguably the most anticipated performance of Wright's career after it was believed the Canadiens, who had the first pick in the draft, were going to take him but instead selected Slovakian winger Juraj Slafkovsky.

Sending Wright back to his OHL team, the Kingston Frontenacs, means the Kraken will not be able to call him back once Wright's junior season has ended. It also means Wright will not burn the first year of his entry-level contract, which will slide because he did not meet the required number of games played this season.

Wright had two points in eight games with the Kraken and averaged 8:29 in ice time for a team than could make the playoffs after finishing their inaugural season near the bottom of the NHL standings.

Fenway Winter Classic sets merchandise records

Published in Hockey
Friday, 06 January 2023 09:58

The 2023 Winter Classic at Fenway Park set merchandise sales records for an NHL outdoor game, according to the league.

Game-day concession merchandise sales for the Jan. 2 matchup between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Boston Bruins were the highest ever recorded for an outdoor event. They rose 61% from the 2022 Winter Classic between the St. Louis Blues and the Minnesota Wild at Target Field in Minneapolis.

Those records extended to online retail as well. The NHL said its e-commerce sales, at its U.S. and Canadian online stores as well as across the Fanatics network of sites, were the highest for a Winter Classic game and up 200% from the 2022 edition.

Winter Classic jerseys for the Penguins and Bruins accounted for 72% of total sales. Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby and Boston winger David Pastrnak had the best-selling individual jerseys.

According to Jim Haskins, NHL senior vice president of consumer products licensing, "all the stars sort of aligned" for the Fenway Park Winter Classic.

"We had amazing jerseys designed by Adidas. Some of the best design work we'd done around these games. We had a first-place team in the Boston Bruins, so the energy levels on that marketplace are super high. We had a team in the Pittsburgh Penguins that has an incredible national following and their fans travel well," he said.

Haskins said the fact that the game-time temperature was above 50 degrees Fahrenheit also helped.

"On-site, it wasn't the coldest Winter Classic but it made for a good fan experience. It allowed you to go and do the things you wanted to do instead of feeling like you're huddled under a blanket," he said.

Haskins felt that the jerseys' unique designs helped sales. The Penguins wore sweaters with a large yellow "P" on the front, a departure from previous designs and a reference to the Pittsburgh Pirates, an NHL team that predated the Penguins in the city.

The Bruins' jerseys marked the first time their outdoor game sweaters had only the city name and not the team's nickname, too. But Haskins said it was the logo underneath "Boston" that really drove interest.

"That 1976 eccentric bear ... their fans just have a love affair with that bear. You see it in all the comments online. And of course, they have a lot of nicknames for it," said Haskins, referring to the logo that Boston fans have affectionately monikered the "Meth Bear."

Haskins said the planning is already underway for the 2024 Winter Classic in Seattle between the Kraken and the Vegas Golden Knights.

"We'll go into the marketplace. We'll do sort of an audit of visuals and DNA inspirations. We'll sit with both the teams, and certainly even some fan kind of focus groups, to begin to create the design work not only for the uniforms but for the décor that we're going to bring," he said.

But the next NHL merch reveal will be for the All-Star Game next month in Sunrise, Florida. The jerseys for that event are expected to be inspired by the Adidas "Reverse Retro" jersey line that teams have worn this season.

The NHL Awards races had an upheaval since our last edition.

(Well, except for the one where Patrice Bergeron is the leader. You know, like every year.)

But the races for MVP, best defenseman, top rookie, most dominant goalie and coach of the year all have new favorites. Such are the unpredictable dynamics of an unpredictable NHL season.

Welcome to the NHL Awards Watch for January. We've polled a wide selection of Professional Hockey Writers Association voters anonymously to get a sense of where the wind is blowing for the current leaders. We've made sure it's a cross section from the entire league, trying to gain as many perspectives as possible.

Bear in mind that the PHWA votes for the Hart, Norris, Calder, Selke and Lady Byng finalists; broadcasters vote for the Jack Adams; and general managers handle the Vezina. Also keep in mind the unofficial "you gotta be in it to win it" protocol for the Hart and the Jack Adams.

USWNT's Smith wins U.S Female POTY award

Published in Soccer
Friday, 06 January 2023 10:09

Portland Thorns and United States forward Sophia Smith has been voted the 2022 U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year.

Smith, 22, won the award in a landslide, claiming 50.8% of the tabulated vote, easily outdistancing San Diego Wave forward Alex Morgan, who finished second with 18.4%.

- Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)

The award capped an outstanding season for Smith, who also won the NWSL MVP award with the Thorns -- becoming the youngest player to do so -- as well as the MVP of the NWSL final.

She was also the youngest player to lead the U.S. in scoring since 1993, and is just the fourth player to have won both the U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year, which she won in 2017, as well as the U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year, joining Tobin Heath, Julie Ertz and Lindsey Horan.

"Obviously this is surreal, and I'm super humbled," Smith said. "It's been a very exiting year, and certainly there's been some challenges, but just being able to grow and develop in the environments with the national team and the Thorns, and being surround by such amazing players, players that I have looked up to for so long, has pushed me to become a better player and person."

Smith is the 19th different player to win the award its 38-year history. and is the youngest USWNT player to win the award since 22-year-old Mia Hamm in 1994. Smith scored 11 goals for the U.S. in 2022 and started a team-high 17 matches.

At club level, she scored 14 goals for the Thorns in the regular season and then scored in the NWSL title game to help lead Portland to its third league title.

"This was a big year for Sophia, and she deserves this recognition, but I'm just excited about where she can take her game from here," U.S. Women's national team manager Vlatko Andonovski said. "She is a special player with special qualities, but the best thing is that has the humbleness, work ethic and drive to keep developing all aspects of her game.

"As coaches, she's a joy to work with because she's always looking for that edge to become better and more productive. As a person, she's a wonderful part of our team, a fantastic teammate and we're looking forward to her having another great year in 2023."

With 11 goals for the USWNT and 14 goals for the Thorns in 2022, Smith is the fourth player to score 10 or more goals for the USWNT and her NWSL club in a single year, joining Abby Wambach (2013), Sydney Leroux (2013) and Christen Press (2015).

While Smith won the award by a comfortable margin, the voting for U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year was much tighter, with the San Diego Wave's Jaedyn Shaw prevailing after receiving 35.1% of the vote to edge out Alyssa Thompson who claimed 34.4%.

"It means everything to me to be a part of the list of players who have won this award, but it also tells me I have so much work to do to keep improving and growing," Shaw said. "I just feel super honored and blessed and it's an amazing way start to the year.

"I want to say thank you to everyone who voted for me and to all the national team coaches I've worked with since the under-14 level and to my coaches on the Wave. Thanks also to all my teammates who have pushed me and will continue to push me.

"All of this makes me even more excited to get going with this NWSL season and to get back into camps with the youth national teams. I'm just excited for what's to come and I wouldn't be where I am today without God's grace and favor over my life."

Shaw, who turned 18 last November, signed her first professional contract with the Wave on July 18. She scored 28 minutes into her professional debut, and went on to score in three of her first four professional matches. She also played in all three matches for the U.S. at the FIFA U20 Women's World Cup.

Votes for U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year and Young Female Player of the Year awards are collected from respective national team coaches, players who earned a cap in 2022, members of the U.S. Soccer Board of Directors, U.S. Soccer Athletes' Council, National Women's Soccer League head coaches and select media members, administrators and college coaches. Fans were also able to take part in the voting, with their portion weighted at 15% of the total.

Chelsea sign young Brazilian midfielder Santos

Published in Soccer
Friday, 06 January 2023 10:09

Chelsea have completed the signing of Vasco da Gama midfielder Andrey Santos, with sources telling ESPN the fee is in the region of £18 million.

Santos, 18, has agreed a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge in a move announced by the Brazilian club on Friday.

"Vasco da Gama agreed this Friday (01/06) the permanent transfer of the athlete Andrey Santos to European football," a club statement read.

"Born in the youth ranks of Gigante da Colina, the midfielder will defend the colours of Chelsea, from England, in the coming seasons. The youngster will end his first spell at the club from Sao Januario at the age of 18 with 38 appearances and eight goals."

- Notebook: The inside stories from world football

He becomes Chelsea's third summer signing after defender Benoit Badiashile arrived in a £34m transfer from Monaco and their acquisition of striker David Datro Fofana from Molde for £10.5m.

Santos scored eight goals in 38 games for Vasco and has already been capped at under-20 level by Brazil.

The club statement continued: "In Sao Januario since 2011, Andrey Santos started his career in futsal and it didn't take long to become the main reference of the 2004 Generation.

"In 2021, after debuting in a Carioca Championship match, Andrey Santos became the youngest player to ever play for Vasco da Gama in the 21st Century, leaving behind names like Talles Magno, Paulinho and Philippe Coutinho. The definitive promotion of Andrey Santos to the professional ranks, however, only happened last season, during the dispute of the Brazilian Championship."

Chelsea are 10th in the Premier League table and have scored the least amount of goals in the top 10.

Van Dijk out for over a month in L'pool setback

Published in Soccer
Friday, 06 January 2023 10:09

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk will be out for "more than a month" with a hamstring injury as he suffers a fresh injury blow, manager Jurgen Klopp said on Friday.

Van Dijk sustained the injury in Liverpool's 3-1 defeat to Brentford on Monday and was substituted at half-time.

- Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)

"Virgil was a surprise to us. It was a big blow," Klopp added in a news conference on Friday.

"He didn't feel a lot. I took him off, it was not clear that maybe he would have tried [to play on]. The diagnosis was pretty harsh. We talk about weeks, more than a month but I hope it goes quick. I hope it goes quick, we'll have to see. For now he's not available, that's how it is and we have other centre-halves.

"Everything is okay for the team but for Virgil it's hard for him. He's played an incredible amount of games over the years. We cannot use him on the pitch but off the pitch we will do that."

Meanwhile, Liverpool will enjoy the addition of new signing Cody Gakpo, and Klopp said he has been impressed with the winger in his first days of training.

He's a good footballer, good in small spaces, likes to shoot from distance, good finisher and dribbler," Klopp said.

"Everybody who wants to know about him could know as there are a lot of videos out there about him. It is nice to see in real life, in front of you.

"He looks really promising and fit. The sessions are intense for him because they're different. I'm very positive about him. Coming from a new league is always difficult, but we expect a positive impact."

Liverpool are in sixth place in the Premier League, seven points behind fourth-place Manchester United.

Klopp's side host Wolves in the FA Cup third round on Saturday before a trip to Brighton in the Premier League next weekend.

"There have been easier moments to sign for Liverpool," Klopp said.

"This year we can't guarantee Champions League football, but Cody never asked. He knew the decision. He can see the table. He's a guy who doesn't want to jump on a running train, he wants to push the train, that always helps."

While Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr signed 37-year-old legend Cristiano Ronaldo primarily to deliver success on the pitch, the arrival of one of the most famous sportsmen on the planet has unsurprisingly coincided with an enormous swell in the club's social media following.

Ronaldo left Manchester United on a free transfer in November and signed a 2½-year deal worth $75 million a year at Al Nassr. He was unveiled in Riyadh three days ago, since when Al Nassr have seen their Instagram follower count rocket up from 853k to well above the 10 million mark.

In fact, at current count, the club can boast 10.2 million followers on the platform -- which is more than every English Premier League club outside the traditional Big Six.

The growth was sparked by a collaborative post between Al Nassr and Ronaldo himself to formally announce the transfer on Dec. 30, which received 33.6 million likes and thus became Ronaldo's third most-liked Instagram post ever, as well as the eighth most-liked post ever shared on the social media site.

Al Nassr's official Twitter account, which has risen from 3.4 million followers to 3.8 million followers in the space of just a few days, also got a boost.

Ronaldo has yet to make his debut for Al Nassr as he completes a two-match suspension imposed by the English Football Association in November for knocking a phone out of an Everton fan's hand after a game with Manchester United at Goodison Park last season. But already he has helped them score an early victory over Saudi rivals Al Hilal, who had previously been the most-followed club in the Middle East with 3.6 million followers on Instagram.

- Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)

Perhaps the impressive scale of Ronaldo's social media impact shouldn't come as too much of a shock given that the Portugal international is the most-followed person on Instagram, with almost 530 million followers to his name.

However, it's strange to think that the Saudi club can now boast more Instagram followers than the likes of established European heavyweights such as Napoli (3.3m), Ajax (7.9 m), Marseille (2.6 m) and Inter Milan (8.8 m.)

Al Nassr are certainly capitalising on their new superstar when it comes to their social media output, with 29 of their 37 most recent posts featuring Ronaldo front and centre. You can hardly blame the club for hyping him up but we can't help but feel slightly sorry for the other players in Rudi Garcia's squad.

Big picture: SL eye first T20I series win in India

The last time India lost a bilateral T20I series at home was in 2019 when Australia beat them 2-0. Since then they have been on an 11-series unbeaten streak. But that could change on Saturday.
After running India close in the first T20I, Sri Lanka beat them by 16 runs in the second to make it 1-1. A win for Sri Lanka in Rajkot will not only snap India's streak but also give the visitors their first T20I series win in India in six attempts.

Sri Lanka's batters may not put fear in the opposition's mind, but they understand the grammar of the format. Throughout their innings in the second T20I, Sri Lanka had at least one batter in the middle - Kusal Mendis in the first half and Dasun Shanaka in the second - taking the attack to the bowlers. In Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana, they have two have the wiliest spinners going around. If their fast bowlers click, as they did in Pune, they can compete with any side.

India, on the other hand, had two top-order collapses in as many games. Deepak Hooda and Axar Patel rescued them in the first T20I, and Suryakumar Yadav and Axar tried to keep them in the game in the second. Apart from that, their bowling unit as a whole hasn't clicked either. After the first T20I, Hardik Pandya spoke about putting his players in tough situations. In the form of a must-win game, he has got exactly that.

Form guide

India LWTWL (last five completed T20Is, most recent first)

Sri Lanka WLLWL

In the spotlight: Arshdeep Singh and Dasun Shanaka

Despite making his T20I debut only six months ago, Arshdeep Singh was supposed to be the leader of the pace attack in this new-look Indian squad. He missed the first T20I with illness, and then bowled five no-balls in two overs, which cost India 37, in the second. Overstepping has been an old issue with Arshdeep, and it is high time he fixed it.
Dasun Shanaka loves playing against India. In the opening game, his 47 off 27 balls kept Sri Lanka in the contest. On Thursday, he smashed the fastest T20I half-century by a Sri Lanka batter before picking up two wickets in the final over of the game to seal the win. His last five T20I knocks against India are 56* (22), 45 (27), 33* (18), 74* (38) and 47* (19). With ball, he has taken more than half of his T20I wickets (14 out of 23) against them. If he continues in the same vein, it will not be easy for India to keep their unbeaten streak intact.

Team news: Will India, SL make changes?

After the second T20I, Rahul Dravid said that India were not looking to make too many changes unless there was an injury. So expect them to go with an unchanged XI.

India (probable): 1 Ishan Kishan (wk), 2 Shubman Gill, 3 Rahul Tripathi, 4 Suryakumar Yadav, 5 Hardik Pandya (capt), 6 Deepak Hooda, 7 Axar Patel, 8 Shivam Mavi, 9 Umran Malik, 10 Arshdeep Singh, 11 Yuzvendra Chahal

Sri Lanka might be facing a selection conundrum. Do they retain the winning combination, or try to improve it further by replacing an out-of-form Bhanuka Rajapaksa with Sadeera Samarawickrama? In the recently concluded LPL, Samarawickrama was the second-highest run-getter with 294 runs at an average of 58.80 and a strike rate of 131.25.

Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Pathum Nissanka, 2 Kusal Mendis (wk), 3 Dhananjaya de Silva, 4 Charith Asalanka, 5 Sadeera Samarawickrama/Bhanuka Rajapaksa, 6 Dasun Shanaka (capt), 7 Wanindu Hasaranga, 8 Chamika Karunaratne, 9 Maheesh Theekshana, 10 Kasun Rajitha, 11 Dilshan Madushanka

Pitch and conditions: Run-fest in Rajkot?

The Rajkot pitch is often compared to the adjacent national highway, so be ready for another run-fest. The teams will be looking to bowl first after winning the toss as this venue favours the chasing team. It's expected to be a cool evening with clear skies; the temperature should be around 17°C.

Stats and trivia

  • Yuzvendra Chahal (88) needs three wickets to overtake Bhuvneshwar Kumar (90) as the highest wicket-taker for India in T20Is.
  • Hardik has captained India in seven T20Is so far. Thursday was the first time he finished on the losing side.
  • Sri Lanka have never played an international match in Rajkot.
  • In his last ten T20Is, Rajapaksa has 137 runs at an average of 15.22 and a strike rate of 115.12.

"They [Sri Lanka] have got a pretty experienced T20I side in this series. From the World Cup, they haven't made too many changes to their playing XI. They've got some class players. They've got a couple of very good spinners, they have got power-hitters at the backend of the game. I think Dasun Shanaka is playing really well. They might have had some tough periods but certainly they are not a side you would take lightly at any stage."

"It's not about the mystery, it's always about the right line and length. If I don't hit the right line and length, they [batters] will go after me. So while bowling, I always try to focus on that. That's why I have been continuously doing well in this format.

Sarfaraz Ahmed has said that his fifth-day century that almost helped Pakistan pull off an epic chase against New Zealand in Karachi on Friday was the best in his Test career.
Speaking at the post-match presentation after bad light forced a draw with Pakistan needing 15 more runs to chase down 319 and New Zealand a wicket away from victory, Sarfaraz said that batting in the fourth innings is always a difficult task.

"Definitely I have more hundreds, but this was a fourth-innings hundred and in the fourth innings, it is not easy to bat anywhere in the world. So I think this is my best hundred," he said.

Sarfaraz came in to bat with Pakistan four down for 77, at the fall of Babar Azam's wicket. Two overs and three runs later, Shan Masood was also gone.
Sarfaraz went on to score 118, batting close to five hours, to take Pakistan to the brink of victory before he gloved one down to leg slip off Michael Bracewell.
The century capped a remarkable comeback for Safaraz. Having lost his place in the XI in January 2019, for four years he was on the fringes of the Test set-up but could not break back in. Now, picked ahead of the out-of-form Mohammad Rizwan, he notched scores of 86, 53 and 78 before registering his fourth Test century.

"I have been there with the team for four years and unfortunately I did not get a chance but whatever cricket came my way, my effort was to keep playing my game and keep giving performances and if Allah wants then I would get an opportunity and I did get an opportunity," he said.

Sarfaraz said he was very tense, but captain Babar and his team-mates gave him confidence.

"My state of mind wasn't very good when I came to bat the first time [in the series]. I was very tense, there was a lot of nerves," he said. "But the captain gave me a lot of confidence and the boys in the team gave me a lot of confidence.

"I backed my form from domestic cricket and had a good performance."

Sarfaraz played the role of aggressor as he put on a 123-run partnership with Saud Shakeel. Once Shakeel fell, he put on a 70-run stand with Agha Salman, but he said that once those two got out, he had to go on the back foot.

"The effort was that when there were 140 runs left, the message from the team management and the captain was that you go after the ball," Sarfaraz said on the team's tactics on the final day. "But when the two wickets fell, I had to go a little on the back foot. But if those wickets hadn't fallen then, the result could have been a better one for us."
