Astros' Odorizzi to IL after being stretchered off

Published in Baseball
Tuesday, 17 May 2022 16:04

Houston Astros pitcher Jake Odorizzi, who was taken off the field on a stretcher Monday night, has been placed on the 15-day injury list Tuesday with what the team continues to describe only as "lower left leg discomfort."

Odorizzi fell while running to cover first base in the fifth inning of Monday's 6-3 loss to the Boston Red Sox. He underwent an MRI on Tuesday, and the team said it would provide an update when one became available.

Astros manager Dusty Baker said after Monday's game that the right-hander was on crutches, in a boot and in good spirits.

The Astros recalled Seth Martinez from Triple-A Sugar Land to take Odorizzi's roster spot.

Odorizzi (3-2, 3.13 ERA), who entered the game with a 15⅔ inning shutout streak, appeared to twist his left leg awkwardly on the delivery to Kike Hernandez. When he turned to cover first base, he took a step and then sprawled out, face down, on the grass.

He remained there after the out was recorded, and Astros staff rushed to tend to him. He was loaded onto a stretcher and wheeled off to an outfield exit. Astros teammates hovered around the infield as the stretcher arrived.

Rays' Lowe likely out at least month due to back

Published in Baseball
Tuesday, 17 May 2022 16:04

Tampa Bay Rays starting second baseman Brandon Lowe is likely to be sidelined for at least a month because of a stress reaction in his lower back, the team announced Tuesday.

Lowe, who led the Rays with 39 home runs last season, will be shut down for three weeks and then will be reevaluated to see if he can restart baseball activities. The Rays had placed Lowe on the 10-day injured list Monday.

"It's a hit, there's no doubt," manager Kevin Cash said, according to the Tampa Bay Times. "He's a big part of our club, offense, defense. Hopefully we're going to reevaluate in three weeks, see where he's at and get him back as soon as possible. But after that, I mean, there's not much. We're just going to have to make do without him."

Lowe has gotten off to a slow start this season, hitting just .212, but he leads the team with five home runs and has 12 RBIs.

Taylor Walls and Vidal Brujan are expected to man second base in Lowe's absence.

Lowe told reporters that he's "not going to force it to come back before it's ready." He said he hopes the timetable the training staff has in place for him is the right one "and I feel great in three weeks and can get baseball started and hopefully be back soon after that."

The Rays (21-15) entered Tuesday's games in second place in the American League East.

PHILADELPHIA -- Bryce Harper did not start for the Philadelphia Phillies in Tuesday's game against the San Diego Padres, and the reigning National League MVP could miss at least one more game as he recovers from a platelet-rich plasma injection in his right elbow.

Harper had the injection Sunday because of a small tear in the ulnar collateral ligament of his right elbow that forced the slugging right fielder to play only as Philadelphia's designated hitter. Harper has lingering soreness and hoped he could return Wednesday or Thursday against the Padres. Harper will remain as DH whenever he returns. Of his 34 games, he has played in his usual right field spot just eight times.

Harper said before Tuesday's game that he didn't think he would feel "an improvement for about seven to 10 days or so."

He won NL Player of the Week honors for batting .609 (14-for-23) with three homers, six doubles, eight RBIs and a 1.904 OPS in six games. Harper missed Sunday's game against the Dodgers.

"I think the biggest thing is, I can hit, as of right now," Harper said. "We're going to take our time with it. Make sure it heals properly, and hopefully takes. I think we're a little bit away from being where I can be out there playing right field, throwing a baseball the right way. The way that I want to. It helps that I can hit and we'll stick with that for now."

Harper said the "main goal" is to return to right field. The 29-year-old star is batting .305 with nine home runs, 14 doubles, 27 RBIs, and an NL-best .634 slugging percentage.

"I'm very lucky it's not my left arm," Harper said.

The Phillies returned home Tuesday from a 5-2 road trip against Seattle and the Dodgers.

Phillies manager Joe Girardi said Harper has a "number of weeks" of no throwing ahead of him.

MLB bans Harvey 60 games for oxy distribution

Published in Baseball
Tuesday, 17 May 2022 16:04

Matt Harvey, the veteran starting pitcher who has struggled to replicate his early career stardom with the New York Mets, was handed a 60-game suspension on Tuesday for distributing a prohibited "drug of abuse" and thus violating Major League Baseball's drug program.

Harvey, 33, is currently on a minor league contract with the Baltimore Orioles and is at the team's extended spring training facility in Sarasota, Florida. His suspension is retroactive to April 29 and is the result of a negotiated settlement that will allow minor league games to count towards the punishment, an industry source told ESPN.

MLB investigated Harvey after his testimony in the February trial of former Los Angeles Angels communications director Eric Kay, who faces a minimum 20-year prison sentence related to the sudden death of pitcher Tyler Skaggs. Harvey acknowledged while under immunity to being a cocaine and oxycodone user and occasionally providing Skaggs with oxycodone pills when he played for the Angels in 2019.

Skaggs was found dead in his Southlake, Texas, hotel room on the morning of July 1, 2019, after asphyxiating from his own vomit. A medical examiner later ruled that Skaggs had fentanyl, oxycodone and alcohol in his system. At the conclusion of an eight-day trial in Fort Worth, Texas, a federal grand jury found Kay guilty on two felony counts, agreeing with the U.S. government that he distributed the deadly drug fentanyl and caused Skaggs' death.

Sentencing is scheduled for June 28.

Harvey was among five former Angels players who admitted to receiving illegal opioids from Kay during the trial, along with C.J. Cron, Cam Bedrosian, Mike Morin and Blake Parker. But those players, who also received immunity, only testified to their own opioid use and, unlike Harvey, did not admit to distributing drugs to someone else.

Those players would not face suspension under MLB's drug policy unless they previously violated the policy regarding drugs of abuse. Unlike players caught using performance-enhancing drugs, players using drugs of abuse like opioids or cocaine are referred to an evaluation treatment board for their first offense and the violation is not made public.

Harvey told federal prosecutors he had a drug source on the East coast and occasionally obtained fentanyl pills for Skaggs through that source. He added that he shared "three, maybe four" pink pills with Skaggs in June of 2019, though he didn't remember if they were oxycodone or Percocet.

Harvey was a budding star for the Mets early in his career, finishing fourth in National League Cy Young Award voting as a 24-year-old in 2013. After Tommy John surgery, he helped pitch the Mets into the World Series in 2015.

He has struggled mightily since, however, posting a 5.92 ERA in 539 1/3 innings while bouncing around with the Mets, Angels, Orioles, Cincinnati Reds and Kansas City Royals from 2016 to 2021.

Harvey went 6-14 with a 6.27 ERA in 28 starts for an Orioles team that lost 110 games last year, then returned to the team on a minor league deal that would pay him $1 million in the major leagues on April 8. He had been pitching out of the team's extended spring training facility in Sarasota, Florida.

Harvey, who was on the injured list and thus not with the team on the road on July 1, said he threw away his remaining oxycodone pills when he found out Skaggs died because he "wanted absolutely nothing to do with that anymore."

Asked if he ever warned Skaggs to be careful, Harvey said in court: "Looking back, I wish I had. In baseball you do everything you can to stay on the field. At the time I felt as a teammate I was just helping him get through whatever he needed to get through."

Olympic track and field: inside the phenomenon

Published in Athletics

AW promotion

Track and field athletes and fans tend to be a bit different to the average sports fanatic. For one, there’s the phrase ‘my sport is your sport’s punishment’, which succinctly highlights the gruelling nature of endurance and speed-based competitions. In other words, track and field tend to attract athletes and fans looking for the epitome of athletic prowess.

Despite the hard work and discipline that goes into training for track and field events, most general sports fans are busy following leagues like the Premier League in the UK or the NFL in the US. Cross country to multi-terrain to track and field events are the subject of peripheral coverage.

For example, in the US, sports betting in the state of Florida is likely to revolve around national leagues like the NFL and NBA, as well as collegiate NCAA sports for local universities like Florida State and the University of Miami. Not even the latter covers collegiate track and field events.

In fact, the average sportsbook in Florida will provide coverage for track and field for one tournament alone: the Olympics. But how did track and field become such monumental events for Olympics fans—especially when other events like the World Athletics Championships exist? Let’s take a closer look.

Something for everyone

The Olympics brings to the forefront some of the world’s most unique sports that aren’t regularly covered. In fact, primary leagues from the Premier League to the NFL take a back seat; few fans watch their national team compete in football or American football during the Olympic Games.

Instead, they’re more likely to watch ski jumping, wrestling, and track and field. This highlights the diverse nature of Olympic competition, which is designed to pull peripheral sports like track and field into the spotlight. In other words, the sports are popular because sports fans are looking to watch something different. And with clear athletic challenges, a straightforward format, and a slew of creative challenges, track and field naturally fit the bill.

Compared to other sports, track and field don’t have a championship extravaganza, teams with ultras clubs, or even a solid or universal marketing scheme. But at the Olympics, all three come together—a blowout competition with high stakes, national teams and heroes, and plenty of coverage across the globe.

A history of headlines

Track and field at the Olympics have also been the stage for larger-than-life stories, triumphs, and controversies. First, track and field have been the stage where superstars are born. Usain Bolt of Jamaica, Yelena Isinbayeva of Russia, and Jesse Owens of the US are a few athletes whose performances at the Olympic Games catapulted them and the sports to new heights.

Second, certain athletes, such as Jesse Owens, weren’t just competing to be named the world’s greatest. They were also battling social challenges. Owens, who won four gold medals back in the 1936 Berlin Games, became one of the most memorable athletes of the 20th century for his courage. He was named on the short-list for BBC’s Sports Personality of the Century for his bravery and vision on the track.

A long roster of unforgettable characters

Clearly, track and field athletes at the Olympics take on a larger-than-life reputation. Jesse Owens is a prime example, as his actions in track and field helped change the sports and the world. But even less influential names will still be remembered for decades to come because of the unique obstacles they faced and for their jaw-dropping feats.

Haile Gebrselassie won’t just be remembered for his record-breaking long-distance running or his two Olympic gold medals. Gebrselassie has also become a cultural ambassador for Ethiopia and Africa, especially for other track and field hopefuls.

Jackie Joyner-Kersee of the US, meanwhile, remains a cultural mainstay for her role as Sports Illustrated’s top Female Athlete of the 20th Century. But she’s also remembered because she used her fame to help transform the impoverished area where she grew up; many locations still bear her name today.

British number one Cameron Norrie continued his preparations for the upcoming French Open with a straight-set win at the ATP event in Lyon.

Top seed Norrie, ranked 11th in the world, won 6-4 6-4 against Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo to reach the quarter-finals.

The 26-year-old had been troubled by a foot injury in Rome last week.

Meanwhile, Liam Broady was one of three British players to win their first-round French Open qualifying matches.

Broady, 28, started his bid for consecutive appearances in a Grand Slam main draw - which he has never done - with a 6-0 4-6 6-0 victory against Argentina's Renzo Olivo.

Fellow Britons Paul Jubb and Yuriko Miyazaki also progressed in Paris, with Jubb beating American Christopher Eubanks 6-2 6-7 (6-8) 7-6 (10-4) and Miyazaki winning 6-3 6-3 against Swiss opponent Ylena In-Albon.

The trio have two more rounds of qualifying to get through to reach the main draw, which starts on the Roland Garros clay on Sunday.

However, Katie Swan and Ryan Peniston are out after losing their respective matches against Bulgaria's Viktoriya Tomova and Russian Andrey Kuznetsov.

Jay Clarke, who was Britain's other representative in qualifying, was beaten on Monday,

Elsewhere, British women's number two Heather Watson lost 6-1 6-1 to Poland's Magda Linette at the WTA tournament in Strasbourg.

Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth are grouped together for the opening two rounds of the PGA Championship, the PGA of America announced on Tuesday. They will go out at 9:11 a.m. ET on Thursday and 2:36 p.m. ET on Friday at Southern Hills.

This is the first time that the three players have been grouped together in a PGA Tour event, according to Tour stats.

They all, however, have experience competing against one another. Here’s how the three players have fared head-to-head in PGA Tour stroke-play events:

Woods vs. McIlroy, 24 rounds:

Woods leads, 12-9-3. Woods also defeated McIlroy in the quarterfinals of the 2019 WGC-Match Play. This is the third time that these two have been grouped in the first two rounds of this major (2018, 2020). Woods leads in PGA rounds, 2-1-1.

Woods vs. Spieth, 15 rounds:

Spieth leads, 8-6-1. They played together in the first two rounds of the 2019 U.S. Open, with Woods shooting 70-72 and Spieth shooting 72-69. Their other major battle was Round 3 of the 2014 Open Championship. Spieth shot 69 to Woods’ 73.

Spieth vs. McIlroy, 33 rounds:

Dead heat, 14-14-5. They have been grouped five times previously in majors: 2018 U.S. Open, 2016 Masters, 2015 PGA, 2014 Open Championship, 2014 Masters. Prior to Woods and Spieth playing Rd. 3 together at Hoylake in ’14, Spieth and McIlroy played the first two rounds alongside one another. McIlroy shot 66-66 to Spieth’s 71-75, as McIlroy went on to claim the claret jug.

The Amundi Evian Championship announced this week an increase in the major championship's prize money to $6.5 million – up $2 million from last year.

One of the five major tournaments in women's golf, the tournament will now offer its winner a $1 million prize, with the remainder distributed to the entire field.

By comparison, Minjee Lee earned $675,000 for her first major win at the 2021 championship.

Players who do not make the cut will also receive unofficial earnings.

In an official release from the LPGA Tour, the association said, "The Amundi Evian Championship has continually asserted its ambition to promote women’s performance in sport and take part in growing women’s golf."

The purse increase comes after other LGPA majors have increased their purses in recent years. The USGA recently doubled the U.S. Women's Open prize to $10 million for 2022, and last summer, the AIG Women's British Open announced a $5.8 million prize fund – both unprecedented in women's golf.

This year, the British Open is increasing its prize by $1 million to $6.8 million.

The LPGA has assembled a record prize fund of more than $90 million for the 2022 season, with the winner of the CME Group Tour Championship set to receive the biggest check in women's golf: $2 million.

“Elevating the purse of this major championship makes a powerful statement about the value and status of the women’s game and the strong commitment of Amundi, Danone, Evian and Rolex to advancing the LPGA and our world-class athletes," said LPGA Commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan.

The 2022 Amundi Evian Championship will be held at the Evian Resort Golf Club from July 21-24 in Evian-les-Bains, France.

The Chicago Fire FC's Gabriel Slonina, an 18-year-old viewed as a goalkeeper of the future for the U.S. national team, was listed on Poland's 39-man roster announced by coach Czesław Michniewicz on Tuesday ahead of four Nations League matches next month.

Sources have told ESPN that there is "no update yet" on whether Slonina will accept the call-up.

- MLS on ESPN+: Stream LIVE games, replays (U.S. only)

Slonina, who turned 18 on Sunday, became Major League Soccer's youngest starting goalkeeper last Aug. 4 at 17 years, 81 days, in a 0-0 draw against New York City. He started 11 league matches last season. including the final 10, and has started the first 11 this year.

Born in Addison, Illinois, and of Polish descent, Slonina attended U.S. national team training camps in December and January but did not get into any matches. He has played for the U.S. at several youth national team levels.

Under FIFA rules, a player may appear into up to three matches for a national team before turning 21 without being tied to the team.

Slonina is among five goalkeepers on Poland's roster, joining starter Wojciech Szczesny of Juventus and Bartłomiej Drągowski of Fiorentina, Kamil Grabara of FC Copenhagen and Lukasz Skorupski of Bologna.

Zack Steffen of Manchester City and Matt Turner of New England, who is transferring to Arsenal this year, shared the U.S. starting job during World Cup qualifying, and Ethan Horvath and Sean Johnson also were on the roster.

Poland hosts Wales on June 1 and Belgium on June 14, and is at Belgium on June 8 and the Netherlands on June 11.

Shaqiri edges Chicharito as MLS' top-paid

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 17 May 2022 11:24

The Chicago Fire FC's Xherdan Shaqiri is Major League Soccer's highest-paid player with a guaranteed compensation of $8.15 million, according to salary data published Tuesday by the MLS Players Association.

Shaqiri beat Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez of the LA Galaxy for the top spot, with the Mexico international guaranteed $6m. Inter Miami's Gonzalo Higuain ($5.79m), Toronto FC's Alejandro Pozuelo ($4.69m), the New England Revolution's Jozy Altidore ($4.26m), Atlanta United's Josef Martinez ($4.14m) and LAFC's Carlos Vela ($4.05m) -- the highest paid player this time a year ago -- rounded out the top six earners.

- MLS on ESPN+: Stream LIVE games, replays (U.S. only)

All data is as of April 15, 2022, so it doesn't include already announced acquisitions -- such as Toronto FC's signing of forward Lorenzo Insigne from Napoli -- that will arrive when the summer transfer window opens on July 7.

The MLSPA said the average base salary for senior roster non-Designated Players increased from $397,753 in 2021 to $438,728 in 2022, an increase of 10.3 percent. This figure doesn't include players making the senior minimum ($84,000) or reserve minimum ($65,500) salaries.

The average guaranteed base compensation for the entire player pool is $472,008 up 11.5 percent from the May, 2021 mark of $423,232. The salaries of players at the bottom of the wage scale continues to improve, as the league's median guaranteed base compensation was $248,333, up 18.25 percent from the May 2021 mark of $210,000.

MLS and the MLSPA are in the second year of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) that was agreed upon in February of last year. That deal was the third such agreement in roughly a year due to MLS invoking a force majeure clause as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The current CBA runs through the end of the 2027 season.

In terms of team payroll based on guaranteed base compensation, Atlanta United's is the highest at $21m, with the LA Galaxy ($20.13m), Inter Miami CF ($18.88m), the New England Revolution ($18.14m) and Chicago ($17.65m) completing the top five. Real Salt Lake ($10.48m) had the lowest payroll, followed by expansion side Charlotte FC ($10.71m), the Portland Timbers ($11.31m), the Colorado Rapids ($11.39m) and Orlando City ($11.51m).

It's worth noting that New England's numbers are inflated because Altidore's previous club, Toronto, is paying a portion of the player's salary after the Reds used their one-time buyout of a guaranteed contract on him last February.

The Seattle Sounders FC -- recently crowned winners of the CONCACAF Champions League -- ranked sixth at $16.98m, while reigning MLS Cup champions New York City FC were seventh at $15.54m.
