Fields leaves Bears' loss with injury to his ribs

Published in Breaking News
Sunday, 21 November 2021 15:13

CHICAGO -- Bears rookie quarterback Justin Fields was ruled out in the second half of Sunday's 16-13 loss to the Baltimore Ravens with an injury to his ribs.

Fields walked back to the locker room early in the third quarter after first being examined in the blue medical tent. It's unclear on which play Fields suffered the injury; the first-round draft pick was hit often by the Baltimore defense.

Fields took a sack on his final drive but stayed in the game for four more plays.

After the game, head coach Matt Nagy said he was unsure whether Fields had broken ribs, or if the injury was a result of one particular hit, or a cumulative effect.

"I have no idea," Nagy said. "I'll have to find out. We'll start getting into some of that later on."

Fields finished the afternoon 4-of-11 for 79 yards with a lost fumble.

Veteran Andy Dalton replaced Fields and promptly threw a 60-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Darnell Mooney. Dalton lost the starting job to Fields after he suffered a knee injury in Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

He also threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Marquise Goodwin in the fourth quarter and finished the game 11-of-22 for 201 yards.

The Bears (3-7) have a quick turnaround and play on Thanksgiving Day in Detroit against the Lions (0-9-1).

Dalton said he's prepared to start if Fields' ribs render him unable to play.

"I prepare the same way I've prepared this whole year," Dalton said. "So if I'm starting I'll be ready to go."

Taylor-made win: Colts RB with 5 TDs vs. Bills

Published in Breaking News
Sunday, 21 November 2021 15:13

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Jonathan Taylor didn't only carry the Indianapolis Colts back into the thick of the AFC playoff race -- he likely also carried himself into the thick of the MVP race.

Taylor had a career-high 32 carries for 185 yards, and he became just the 18th player in NFL history to score five touchdowns, doing so Sunday in the Colts' convincing 41-15 victory over the Buffalo Bills. The Colts started the season 1-4, but they've since won five of their last six games to move above .500 for the first time this season.

"He's going crazy," fellow Colts running back Nyheim Hines said. "He's sending a message to the league. It's been amazing watching him play. Great to watch him finish runs and make people miss. He's a complete back ... If there's any skill position [for MVP], Jonathan Taylor needs to be in it. Him and [Los Angeles Rams receiver] Cooper Kupp. JT is the first in line for a non-quarterback player."

The 185 yards moved Taylor to the top of the NFL's rushing leaderboard (1,122 yards), ahead of Tennessee's Derrick Henry. Taylor may stay at the top the rest of the season, especially with the possibility of Henry being out the rest of the year with a foot injury.

Taylor is the third-youngest player to have five touchdowns in a game and the third to get all five in just three quarters.

"You get a sense of his confidence," Colts quarterback Carson Wentz said. "But you never know if you walk right by him in the locker room, in the grocery store or whatever. He's a low-key guy. He knows what he can do. He's confident. ... The game he had [Sunday] honestly doesn't surprise me anymore because every single week he shows up and shows out."

Taylor, the Colts' best running back since Hall-of-Famer Edgerrin James, has taken a load off Wentz's shoulders because the quarterback doesn't have to try to carry the team as much. Taylor is only the eighth player since 1950 with 1,200 scrimmage yards in an eight-game span. Taylor also has 29 receptions for 303 yards and a touchdown.

"I love when we try to put attention on him and you can tell he's uncomfortable," Reich said about Taylor. "I love that feeling. We all like the feeling when somebody doesn't want the attention feel uncomfortable."

Reich said earlier this season that Taylor has reached the point where he deserves at least 20 carries a game. Taylor has topped 20 carries in a game just twice this season, with both coming in the past two games. The lack of Taylor being overworked is paying off because the Colts can lean on him even more down the stretch, as four of their final six games are against teams that went into Sunday with a winning record.

"We are hoping that we can just continue to build that workload like in the track and field," Reich said last week. "Really have a second half of the year that's stronger and faster than the first half of the year. That would be the goal."

Kings fire Walton, name Gentry interim coach

Published in Basketball
Sunday, 21 November 2021 12:02

The Sacramento Kings promoted associate head coach Alvin Gentry to interim head coach after firing coach Luke Walton on Sunday, the team announced.

"After a thorough evaluation of the season thus far, I decided to make a change to the head coach position," Kings general manager Monte McNair said in a statement. "I want to thank Luke for his efforts and contributions to our team."

The Kings have lost seven of eight games and dropped to 6-11 on the season -- leaving them 12th in the Western Conference. Several recent losses came against struggling teams like the San Antonio Spurs, Oklahoma City Thunder and Minnesota Timberwolves.

Gentry will be taking over his sixth NBA team. He will get a pay raise and already was under contract for the 2022-23 season on his assistant coaching contract, sources said. Kings assistant coach Rico Hines, meanwhile, has been promoted to the front of the bench, sources said. Hines was hired to Walton's staff as a player development coach in 2019.

The Kings are discussing potential benchmarks of success for Gentry the rest of the season that could serve as possible parameters on keeping the job on a long-term basis, sources said.

Still, this is an interim coaching job and the struggling Kings could be opening another coaching search in the offseason.

Walton was 68-93 in two-plus seasons as Kings coach.

The Kings have been one of the league's worst defensive teams under Walton, ranking 26th in defensive efficiency this season and last in 2020-21. This season, Sacramento also ranks 26th in defensive rebounding percentage, 29th in paint points per game allowed and last in second-chance points per game allowed, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

Sacramento has the longest active playoff drought in the NBA (since 2006). In those 15 years, the Kings have had 10 head coaches; Gentry will be the 11th since Rick Adelman led the Kings to their last playoff berth.

Japanese OF Suzuki up for MLB bidding Monday

Published in Baseball
Sunday, 21 November 2021 11:21

NEW YORK -- Outfielder Seiya Suzuki will be posted Monday by his Japanese club and his rights will be available for bidding by the 30 Major League Baseball teams.

MLB told its teams Sunday that the posting will start Monday morning and run through 5 p.m. ET on Dec. 22.

The 27-year-old, Japan's 2019 Home Run Derby champion, has spent nine seasons with the Central League's Hiroshima Toyo Carp. He hit .319 with 38 homers and 88 RBIs this season and has a .315 career average with 182 homers and 562 RBIs.

He won the 2019 Central League batting title, is a four-time All-Star and is a three-time Gold Glove winner.

The starting right fielder on Japan's gold-medal team, Suzuki homered off the United States' Anthony Carter as the hosts rallied to beat the Americans 7-6 during the Olympic tournament. He singled twice off Nick Martinez as Japan beat the U.S. 2-0 in the gold-medal game.

Under 2017 changes to the posting system, the posting fee will be 20% of the first $25 million of a major league contract, including earned bonuses and options. The percentage drops to 17.5% of the next $25 million and 15% of any amount over $50 million. There would be a supplemental fee of 15% of any earned bonuses, salary escalators and exercised options.

Sources: Brewers, C Pedro Severino agree to deal

Published in Baseball
Sunday, 21 November 2021 14:32

Catcher Pedro Severino and the Milwaukee Brewers are in agreement on a one-year, $1.9 million contract, sources familiar with the deal told ESPN's Jeff Passan on Sunday.

The deal is pending a physical.

Severino, 28, will join Omar Narvaez at catcher and has incentives in the deal that can earn him another $400,000.

Severino has spent the past three seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. He batted .248 with 11 home runs and 46 RBIs in 2021.

Brigham Young University seal individual titles as British runner Charles Hicks of Stanford impresses in fourth at the US collegiate division one event in Florida

Conner Mantz won his second consecutive NCAA cross-country men’s title while Whittni Orton took victory in the women’s race at the division one championship event in Tallahassee, Florida, on Saturday (Nov 20).

In the team stakes, Northern Arizona won the men’s crown for the fifth time in six years as NC State claimed the women’s competition on a rolling course in warm, sunny conditions.

Mantz, 24, made his move on “the wall” – an uphill section about 500m from the finish – but then had to see off a spirited counter-attack from Athanas Kioko before kicking away to win in a course record of 28:33 over the 10km distance.

Wesley Kiptoo of Iowa State finished runner-up five seconds behind with Kioko of Campbell a further two seconds behind in third.

Charles Hicks – a Briton studying at Stanford University – ran 28:47 in fourth as he led his team to fifth place.

Charles Hicks (David Hicks)

“It seemed like every so often, somebody new was taking the front and pushing it,” said Mantz. “It wasn’t just Kiptoo this time. I don’t know if that was better or worse for me, but it all worked out.

Northern Arizona’s winning team effort was led by Abdihamid Nur in seventh, then Nico Young and Drew Bosley in 11th and 13th respectively as they beat Iowa State and Oklahoma State.

Further down the field there was drama as Cooper Teare, the NCAA 5000m champion, staggered across the line in 247th although he was later declared healthy post-race.

Whittni Orton (150) (NCAA)

In the women’s race Orton used similar tactics by making her move on “the wall”.

Unlike the men’s race, though, her rivals were unable to fight back and she stormed away to win in a course record of 19:25 over the 6km distance as defending champion Mercy Chelangat of Alabama was runner-up four seconds behind, while West Virginia’s Ceili McCabe was a close third.

Orton led BYU to silver medals in the team stakes as NC State won thanks to Kelsey Chmiel (6th), Katelyn Tuohy (15th) and Alexandra Hays (22nd).

Jacob Kiplimo captures world half-marathon record

Ugandan clocks 57:31 to take one second off Kibiwott Kandie’s mark at the EDP Lisbon Half-Marathon

Jacob Kiplimo sliced one second off Kibiwott Kandie’s near-12-month-old world record with 57:31 at the EDP Lisbon Half Marathon in Portugal on Sunday (Nov 21).

Passing 5km in 13:40, 10km in 27:05 and 15km in 40:27, the world half-marathon champion finished roughly half a mile ahead of his rivals as he became the fastest man in history over the 13.1-mile distance.

Kiplimo finished third in the 10,000m and fifth in the 5000m at the Tokyo Olympics, but on the roads of Lisbon he confirmed his status as the world No.1 at half-marathon as he beat the world record set by Kenya’s Kandie in early December of last year.

Esa Huseyidin Mohamed of Ethiopia was runner-up in 59:39, narrowly ahead of Gerba Beyata Dibaba as the top nine men broke 60 minutes.

That one-hour barrier was first broken by Moses Tanui in 1993 when the Kenyan ran 59:47 in Milan. Haile Gebrselassie the became the first man to break the 59-minute barrier with 58:55 in Tempe in 2006, although his mark was disputed due to a vehicle arguably helping him draft from the wind.

When Zersenay Tadese of Eritrea ran 58:23 in Lisbon in 2010, it was a world record that stood for eight years. But that mark has been improved upon a lot in the past three years with firstly Abraham Kiptum running 58:18 in Valencia in 2018 followed by Geoffrey Kamworor running 58:11 in Copenhagen in 2019 and then Kandie clocking 57:32 last December.

The women’s world record for half-marathon has also tumbled lately and has been broken several times this year alone. But on Sunday in Lisbon the race was won by Ethiopia’s Tsehay Gemechu in 66:06 from Daisy Cherotich’s 66:15 and Joyce Chepkemoi 66:19.

All were well outside the world record of 62:52 set by Letesenbet Gidey in Valencia last month.

But they've only raised further questions, over apparent editing and their seemingly staged nature, and so far there's been no let up in the calls from the Women's Tennis Association, a number of global tennis stars as well as governments, for proof that Peng Shuai is genuinely free to speak and acts as she chooses.

Joey Carbery has the attributes to "do what's right" for Ireland at fly-half while showing his full range of skills against Argentina on Sunday, assistant coach Mike Catt says.

With Johnny Sexton ruled out, injury-plagued Carbery will make only his ninth Ireland start after his superb late cameo in the win over New Zealand.

"Rugby's about decision-making and that's all they have to do," said Catt.

"Just make the right decisions and then bring their X-factor on top of that."

Catt added: "Joey, he's very good and it's just making sure we get the right platform for him to be able to show his point of difference. I think that's crucial for us."

Carbery's nerveless three late penalties sealed Ireland's sensational 29-20 win over the All Blacks and Catt says Sunday's game offers him another chance to show that the Irish now have genuine depth in their fly-half ranks in addition to 101-times capped Sexton.

"I never worked with him when he had his best [form], so I'm still learning about Joey myself," said Catt.

"But over the summer and the past three or four weeks we've had together, him and Harry [Byrne] and Johnny have been exceptional in how they've progressed, in how they've helped each other and how they're competing against each other for those spots.

"It's a very, very healthy environment for that to happen.

"He's hopefully going to get a few opportunities tomorrow to really do what he's good at and go out and enjoy himself."

Catt says Carbery has a different personality to Sexton, whose leadership and intensity are fundamental to the Irish side.

"They are very different characters but you need that in a team. That's what makes you a good team," said the 50-year-old former England international.

"Where Johnny's leadership comes through, maybe Joey doesn't have that just yet.

"But other people bring that, so it's just making sure that you bring what you are good at and we will grow the other aspects that need to be grown as a 10.

"If everybody is helping you and everybody else is doing their job and leading in their own way, then it's very easy to do."
