Tim Paine knew explicit messages could emerge at any time

Published in Cricket
Saturday, 20 November 2021 18:15

Tim Paine has admitted he believed the texting scandal that has cost him the Australian Test captaincy was a ticking time bomb that was always going to become public at some point.

The ramifications of Paine's resignation from the captaincy are continuing to flow in Australian cricket in the Ashes lead up, with the search for a new captain to include background checks for possible integrity issues.

Paine was cleared of any misconduct in a 2018 integrity unit investigation, after he sent lewd messages and a graphic image to a Cricket Tasmania colleague.

Cricket Australia chairman Richard Freudenstein and CEO Nick Hockley on Saturday admitted they would have axed Paine as captain had they been in charge at the time. But they defended the inaction since, claiming they'd felt no need to delve deeper into the investigation after being made aware of it when they joined the organisation in 2019 and 2020 respectively.

However, Paine has conceded he always felt the issue could come to the fore, after previously being aware of other attempts for the story to be revealed publicly.

"I thought the issue was dealt with, but it always popped up around a big series, or at the start of the cricket season," Paine said in a Herald Sun interview beside his wife Bonnie. "Over the last three years, there have been numerous times where media agencies have put to us that they had evidence, yet they never chose to write it.

"But I knew it was going to come out at some point, as much as I didn't want it to."

Paine remains adamant that the 2017 messages between he and the colleague were fully consensual, and he only became aware there was an issue when a complaint was lodged six months later.

By that point he had been appointed Test captain, with the integrity unit interviews taking place before the white-ball tour to England in mid-2018. He did not believe the existence of the messages were a reason not to accept the captaincy long-term.

"Because it was a consensual exchange of messages months beforehand, I didn't think it was anything to consider," he said. "I never thought for a moment that it would become an issue. I was just excited and honoured to be asked."

He is also certain he can continue as a player in Australia's Test team, having indicated the home Ashes summer had been his target for potential retirement.

"I see that as the ultimate high, to be able to finish your Test career after winning an Ashes series in Australia," Paine said. "That's the dream. That's what I want to do."

Asked if he can play in an Ashes series, which would come huge scrutiny without a controversy hanging over him, Paine said: "Yep, I'm sure I can."

He revealed that head coach had initially tried to persuaded him to continue and that he does not believe any of his team-mates knew about the messages.

"JL [Justin Langer] told me he's devastated," Paine said. "He was pretty firm that he wanted me to continue as captain, and again, once I explained to him the reasons that I thought resigning was the best thing to do, he was with me all the way."

Regardless, Paine's admissions bring into question why new CA management did not look further into the 2018 investigation if there had always been fears the story would resurface.

In stating his board would have acted differently, Freudenstein claimed on Saturday the Australian captain should be held to the highest account for his actions. However, he defended his organisation's handover process, given the CEO, seven directors and several other key executives have changed since the 2018 investigation.

"Once you have a private matter that has been subject to a full integrity unit investigation, it wouldn't be normal for that to be part of the handover," Freudenstein said.

"All I can say is the whole current Australian cricket board, including those members that were on the board in 2018, are very clear that if the same circumstances arose today, we would make a different decision."

Perth Scorchers 2 for 131 (Piparo 50*) beat Sydney Sixers 4 for 128 (Perry 39*, King 3-18) by eight wickets

Sydney Sixers took the wooden spoon for the first in the WBBL as Perth Scorchers rubberstamped their place in the grand final, which will be hosted at Optus Stadium on November 27, with a convincing victory.

In a good sign for their title dip next week, Scorchers' middle-order again got the job done in the run chase as Chloe Piparo, with her maiden WBBL fifty off 39 balls, and Heather Graham added 74 for the third wicket.

Legspinner Alana King had been the star with the ball, knocking back a promising start from Sixers by removing Alyssa Healy and Shafali Verma with her first three deliveries. She then returned in the 15th over to claim Nicole Bolton and after two overs had 3 for 5. Angela Reakes gave the innings a bit of a late kick but the total never threatened to be enough.

Vieira upends Tate comeback with decision win

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 20 November 2021 18:28

Miesha Tate's highly anticipated comeback run has been upended.

Ketlen Vieira defeated Tate, one of the most popular women's fighters in MMA history, via unanimous decision (48-47, 48-47, 49-46) in the main event of UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.

Vieira used her counter-punching and length to win the standup battle and bloody Tate badly in the fifth and final round.

"That's what I'm here for -- I'm here to fight the best," Vieira said through an interpreter. "Respect my skills."

ESPN had Vieira ranked No. 8 in the world at women's bantamweight entering Saturday.

Tate is the former UFC women's bantamweight champion who returned after a five-year layoff in July with a TKO win over Marion Reneau. With a victory, Tate was hoping to earn a title shot against old rival Amanda Nunes, but she'll have to get back to the drawing board.

"I've always dreamed about being in a main event against a legend," said Vieira. "To be able to live that moment and get a victory, I don't have words to express."

The fight had many close rounds. Vieira admitted she was hesitant early on. Tate was the aggressor and landed hard shots in the early rounds. Vieira, though, always seemed to have an answer on the counter. The first round was a tossup, with both women landing big right hands. In the second, Vieira started to get into more of a rhythm, landing combinations.

Vieira kept that momentum in the third round, landing a beautiful right uppercut-left hook combination several times. Tate rebounded in a solid fourth round, landing a hard right hand at the round's outset and then a takedown later on. Vieira really got off again with her punching combos in the fifth round, blasting Tate and making her bloody with a big right hand. By the end of the fight, Tate had a swollen left eye, bloody nose and lumped up face.

"The real thing is about enjoying the journey," Tate said. "This is just a moment in time, you guys. We all have moments in our life. ... What else can I say? I get to go home and kiss my two kids. Life is great."

Tate was transported to the hospital after the fight for a CT Scan on her head and face, according to the UFC.

Vieira said she'll be in Las Vegas for 10 more days and would love to work with Tate in the gym while she is in town.

"I'd love to have the chance and opportunity to train with her, she's a legend," Vieira said. "I look up to her."

Added Vieira: "Miesha Tate is a world champion. She's one of the best fighters in the world."

Vieira (12-2) came in having lost two of her past three fights, most recently a unanimous decision loss to Yana Kunitskaya in February. She is now 2-2 in her past four. The Brazil native was 10-0 prior to this recent stretch. Vieira, 30, owns career wins over Cat Zingano and Sara McMann.

Tate (19-8) returned from retirement July 17 with a third-round TKO win over Reneau -- Tate's first-ever KO/TKO in the UFC. The Washington native, who lives and trains in Las Vegas, retired in November 2016 after back-to-back losses to Nunes and Raquel Pennington.

Tate, 35, won the UFC women's bantamweight title at UFC 196 in March 2016 with a fifth-round submission win over Holly Holm and lost it to Nunes at UFC 200 four months later. "Cupcake" is also known for her extremely well publicized feud with Ronda Rousey, which included two grudge matches.

Only Nunes has more wins in the UFC women's bantamweight division since 2016 than Vieira, who has six victories during that span, tied with Irene Aldana and Pennington.

Drinkwitz shows lightsaber after Mizzou's OT win

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 20 November 2021 18:28

Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz reveled in his team's 24-23 overtime win over Florida on Saturday, ending his news conference by trolling Gators' coach Dan Mullen.

Last Halloween, Mullen dressed up as the Star Wars villain Darth Vader after Florida beat Missouri in Gainesville, speaking to reporters post-game in full costume.

On Saturday night, Drinkwitz paused before he left the assembled media in Columbia. He then lifted the hood of his black sweatshirt over his head and pulled a toy lightsaber out from behind the podium.

"May the force be with you," Drinkwitz said, repeating the famous line from the Star Wars movie franchise.

Drinkwitz's Tigers trailed Florida three times in the regulation only to score in the fourth quarter and force the game into overtime.

During the first overtime, Florida scored a touchdown on a trick play and kicked a successful extra point. Missouri then scored a touchdown of its own on a Tyler Badie 13-yard run. But rather than try to tie the game with an extra point, Drinkwitz opted to go for two and the win.

Drinkwitz dialed up a successful pass from quarterback Conor Bazelak to tight end Daniel Parker for the walk-off win.

Missouri improved to 6-5, while Florida dropped to 5-6.

It was the Gators' fourth straight loss against a Power 5 team. Florida is 5-9 in its last 14 games, dating back to last season, prompting questions about the long-term viability of Mullen remaining the head coach.

Mullen, who signed a contract extension in June, lamented "way too many mental mistakes" against Missouri and how his team committed nine penalties compared to the Tigers' four.

"We have to be mentally tougher," he said. "And that's on the coaches ... and our preparation."

Florida will seek to avoid finishing the season below .500 when it hosts rival Florida State next Saturday.

Mullen was asked by a reporter whether he still wants to be the head coach at Florida.

"Yeah, I love being the coach of the Gators," he said. "We're giving it everything we have every single week."

Mullen praised the attitude of the players and their work ethic all season.

He lamented how Saturday marked a seventh straight loss by a touchdown or less.

"It's pretty unfortunate and it's tough," Mullen said. "It's a play here and there. I'm looking at our guys, and that's on us."

Young shatters Tide mark with 559 yards passing

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 20 November 2021 18:28

Alabama quarterback Bryce Young on Saturday lit up the Arkansas defense for 559 yards, breaking the school's single-game passing record that had stood for more than half a century.

Young set the record when he connected with Slade Bolden for a 27-yard reception early in the fourth quarter to reach 488 yards for the game. The previous mark was held by Scott Hunter, who threw for 484 yards against Auburn in 1969.

Young's 559 yards are also the second-most in SEC history behind Mississippi State's K.J. Costello, who threw for 623 yards against LSU in 2020.

Young finished 31-of-40 with five touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed for two scores as the Crimson Tide won 42-35.

"He made really good decisions about who to throw the ball to, and I mean, he had at least four drops and he had a couple a couple overthrows," Alabama coach Nick Saban said. "But the guy had a fantastic game. He really did a good job sort of taking what they gave him."

Three of Young's touchdown passes went to Jameson Williams, including a 79-yard strike in double coverage. The two also connected for a 32-yard score and 40-yard score. Williams finished with eight catches for 190 yards.

"When you have a dynamic playmaker like that you just have to put the ball in the air and let him run under it," Young said.

With the win, Alabama clinched the SEC West to set up a showdown with Georgia in the SEC championship game.

Saban credited his players for their resiliency against a tough schedule.

"It's been difficult to play in the West. This year was very difficult," he said. "We won some close games. We won a close game today, which the resiliency of the players contributes to that. Their competitive spirit and how much it means to them contributes to that. But we do need to fix some of the things that we're not getting correct on the field."

Young, a sophomore in his first season as a starter, has thrown for 3,586 yards, 38 touchdowns and three interceptions this season.

Sources: Man Utd's Solskjaer expected to be fired

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 20 November 2021 18:28

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to be sacked as Manchester United manager following Saturday's disastrous 4-1 defeat to Watford, sources have told ESPN.

One source added that Solskjaer knew he had to win on Saturday and is now expecting the worst.

Despite humiliation at the hands of Liverpool and Manchester City, United chiefs, including co-chairman Joel Glazer and executive vice chairman Ed Woodward, were keen for Solskjaer, who signed a new three-year contract in the summer, to at least see out the season.

But the manner of the performance at Vicarage Road and United's fifth defeat in their past seven games warranted fresh discussions between Glazer and Woodward on Saturday night. Chief negotiator Matt Judge was also involved in talks.

Talks among executives late on Saturday focused on compensation costs for the manager, as well as which of his staff would stay on at Old Trafford in the event of his dismissal.

A lack of alternatives and results in the Champions League -- United are top of Group F with two games to play -- have kept Solskjaer in the job during a miserable run of results, but there are now genuine fears the Norwegian will not be able to get the team into the top four and earn a place in the financially lucrative Champions League for next season.

United passed up the opportunity to speak to Antonio Conte following the 5-0 defeat to Liverpool at Old Trafford in October, and the Italian has since been appointed by Tottenham Hotspur.

There are varying levels of support among United executives for Mauricio Pochettino, Brendan Rodgers, Zinedine Zidane, Erik ten Hag and Ralf Rangnick to take over, but all of the candidates except Zidane are employed at other clubs.

There would be support for technical director Darren Fletcher and assistant coach Michael Carrick to lead the team in the interim, but the duo are untested as top-level coaches and United are facing a daunting run of 10 games in five weeks before the end of the calendar year.

The next break in the side's schedule is between Brighton and Hove Albion's visit to Old Trafford on Dec. 18 and the trip to Newcastle United on Dec. 27.

The latest setback against Watford has seen United slip to seventh in the table.

They face Villarreal in Spain on Tuesday before a trip to leaders Chelsea on Sunday and a home game against Arsenal on Dec. 2.

Terence Crawford-Shawn Porter live results and analysis

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 20 November 2021 17:57

Terence Crawford defends his WBO welterweight title against Shawn Porter on Saturday in the main event of a Top Rank on ESPN+ PPV card at Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas (9 p.m. ET).

Crawford (37-0, 28 KOs), 34, of Omaha, Nebraska, won the belt by stopping Jeff Horn in 2018. In his most recent fight in November 2020, he defended the title in a fourth-round TKO victory over Kell Brook, his fourth consecutive defense. But Porter is considered the toughest test of Crawford's career so far, and Crawford understand the challenge.

"I respect everything that Shawn does. Shawn is athletic, he can box, he can bang, he can move around in the ring, he can cut corners and take angles," Crawford said on Wednesday's news conference. "I'm not going to sit here and say that I don't respect anything that he does. I'm just going to say that I do a lot of things better than Shawn."

Porter (31-3-1, 17 KOs), 34, of Akron, Ohio is a two-time welterweight champion who has victories over Devon Alexander, Paulie Malignaggi, Adrien Broner and Danny Garcia, among others. He lost close fights challenging for titles against Errol Spence Jr. and Keith Thurman, and aside from being the underdog against Crawford, Porter is confident he can leave the ring with a victory.

"He is a dominant fighter. Everyone he gets in the ring with, he dominates," Porter said in a recent news conference. "I want to be the one fighter that he can't dominate. Everything that is required to beat Terence, I got it. It's time to take on this challenge."

Dogboe outpoints Diaz in all-action fight

In the buildup to Saturday night, the featherweight bout between Isaac Dogboe and Christopher Diaz was billed as the best fight on the Crawford-Porter undercard.

It lived up to the hype. In an action fight, Dogboe squeaked out a majority decision win, 97-93, 96-94, 95-95. Diaz was motionless as the scorecards were read and the crowd inside the Michelob ULTRA Arena had a mixed reaction to the decision.

Judge Tim Cheatham, who had the key 96-94 card, had Dogboe winning five of the final six rounds.

Dogboe (23-2, 15 KOs) showed why he was a former junior featherweight champion. The Ghanian pressed the action in the second half of the fight and pressed Diaz (26-4, 16 KOs), who hails from Barranquitas, Puerto Rico. Between the fifth and the eighth rounds, Dogboe landed more than 50% of his power punches, according to CompuBox.

After the final bell, Diaz jumped on the ropes and celebrated, believing he won the fight. After the decision was read, Diaz walked past the ESPN TV crew and expressed his dismay with the decision. He ultimately blamed the loss on questionable judging.

Said Diaz: "We're in Las Vegas."

Lopez-Ochoa ends in no-decision after accidental clash of heads

An accidental clash of heads left Ochoa with a nasty gash over his right eye and resulted in a no-decision in the featherweight bout. The ringside doctor stopped the fight after the second round.

"I landed some good shots and was busting him up," Lopez said after the fight. "He was looking for a way out.

"This is so frustrating. I want to get back in the ring as soon as possible. I'm still ready to take on anybody in the featherweight division."

Lopez (15-3, 6 KOs), of Glendale, California, and Ochoa (12-2, 5 KOs), from Long Beach, California, were exchanging hard shots on the inside when their heads collided. Lopez was coming on strong toward the end of the second round but didn't receive the chance to follow up. He was fighting for the first time since a majority-decision loss to Isaac Dogboe. Ochoa scored a first-round knockout in his previous outing.

Balderas overwhelms, stops Cortez in Round 4

Junior lightweight Karlos Balderas saw a chance for a stoppage and took full advantage.

Balderas landed a flurry of punches on the overmatched Julio Cortez to pick up a fourth-round TKO win. Balderas (11-1, 10 KOs) stung the Ecuadorian with a right hook that opened the window for the stoppage. The prospect out of Santa Maria, California, zipped a left uppercut through Cortez's guard and whipped a right hand over the top that forced referee Raul Caiz Jr. to stop the fight.

The mismatch was apparent from the first round when Balderas hit Cortez (15-4, 11 KOs) with a right hand that knocked out Cortez's mouthpiece. Cortez was seriously hurt in the third round as Caiz hovered over the action but let Cortez make it to the bell. One judge scored the round 10-8 for Balderas.

Balderas, a 2016 U.S. Olympian, picked up his second stoppage win in as many fights after he suffered a TKO loss against Juan Rene Tellez in December 2019.

Johnson scores TKO victory in debut

Tiger Johnson dazzled in his pro debut and poured it on late for a big first victory. The welterweight prospect unleashed some big right hands to stop Antonius Grable in the first fight of Saturday's Terence Crawford-Shawn Porter undercard.

Johnson, who fights out of Cleveland, forced a stoppage at the 1:54 mark of the fourth round. Earlier in the round, Johnson scored a knockdown when a right hand popped the fighter out of Sarasota, Florida, and Grable's gloves touched the canvas. Grable (3-2-1, 3 KOs) was hurt again seconds later and the referee jumped in to stop the fight.

After the stoppage, Tiger went over to the ESPN broadcast crew and leaned over the ropes with a message for announcer Timothy Bradley Jr.: "I'm here."

Still to come:

  • Title fight: Terence Crawford vs. Shawn Porter, 12 rounds, for Crawford's WBO welterweight title

  • Esquiva Falcao vs. Patrice Volny, 12 rounds, IBF middleweight title eliminator

  • Janibek Alimkhanuly vs. Hassan N'Dam, 10 rounds, middleweights

Yanks free roster space, trade Nelson to Phillies

Published in Baseball
Friday, 19 November 2021 16:12

NEW YORK -- Short of 40-man roster spots to protect prospects ahead of next month's winter meeting draft, the New York Yankees traded right-hander Nick Nelson to the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday along with minor league catcher Donny Sands.

New York received minor league infielder T.J. Rumfield and left-hander Joel Valdez from the Phillies.

The 25-year-old Nelson was 0-2 with an 8.79 ERA in two starts and nine relief appearances over six stints this season. He stuck out 22 in 14 1/3 innings.

Nelson was 3-4 with a 3.81 ERA in five starts and 24 relief appearances at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

He made his big league debut in 2020 and is 1-2 with a 6.43 ERA in two seasons.

Sands, 25, split the season with Double-A Somerset and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, hitting .261 with 16 doubles, 18 homers and 56 RBI.

Rumfield, 21, hit .250 with seven RBI at low-A Clearwater in his first season after he was taken by Philadelphia in the 12th round of this year's amateur draft.

Valdez, 21, went 1-1 with a 1.63 ERA in 15 starts for the DSL Phillies Red.

Way-too-early 2022 MLB awards predictions

Published in Baseball
Friday, 19 November 2021 03:53

The entire landscape of Major League Baseball is virtually guaranteed to change from one season to the next. The annual awards that were handed out over the course of this week are yet another example of that.

Just to pick one race, let's go with the AL MVP competition. Just before the season, SportsBetting.com ranked the most likely candidates as Mike Trout of the Angels and Luis Robert of the White Sox. Based on what we saw in 2020 and, for Trout, over a multiyear period, the status of favorite for both made sense. Indeed, both played like MVPs while they were on the field, but injuries kept both players off the field so often that they were never factors in the race.

Meanwhile, eventual landslide AL winner Shohei Ohtani was tied for third in the futures market with the Yankees' Aaron Judge. But the AL finalists in addition to Ohtani were further down the list, with Toronto's Vladimir Guerrero Jr. coming in tied for eighth (at 20-1) and Blue Jays teammate Marcus Semien off the board entirely, so somewhere south of 100-1.

That's just one award, but that dynamic repeats for all of them, no matter where you're getting your odds. The reason is simple: Predicting the future is hard. It's hard in life. Hard in sports. Hard when it comes to teams. It's especially hard when it comes to players.

Let's do it anyway. Here's a very early stab at the 2022 MLB awards races. How early? So early, that you might even call it way too early.

A video claiming to show Chinese player Peng Shuai out with friends is "insufficient" evidence of her safety, says Women's Tennis Association chief Steve Simon.

On Saturday, Chinese state-affiliated media posted two clips on Twitter of Peng purportedly having dinner with her coach and friends in a restaurant.

"While it is positive to see her, it remains unclear if she is free and able to make decisions and take actions on her own, without coercion or external interference," said Simon.

Peng, 35, has not been in direct contact with the WTA since making sexual assault allegations against a former China vice-premier two weeks ago.

The governing body of the women's professional tour has been told Peng is safe, and in Beijing, by the Chinese Tennis Association, although Simon said on Friday there has been no confirmation if that is true.

On Saturday, the editor of the Global Times - which is a Chinese state-affiliated media organisation - posted the clips of Peng which he said were filmed this weekend.

"The video content clearly shows they are shot on Saturday, Beijing time," said Hu Xijin.

However, the authenticity of the videos was questioned by BBC China media analyst Kerry Allen.external-link

She said it appeared a date had been blurred out of the video.

"I am glad to see the videos released by China state-run media that appear to show Peng Shuai at a restaurant in Beijing," added Simon.

"This video alone is insufficient.

"As I have stated from the beginning, I remain concerned about Peng Shuai's health and safety and that the allegation of sexual assault is being censored and swept under the rug.

"I have been clear about what needs to happen and our relationship with China is at a crossroads."

Peng is a former world number one doubles player who has won two Grand Slam titles - at Wimbledon in 2013 and the 2014 French Open, both alongside Chinese Taipei's Hsieh Su-wei.

She also achieved a career-high singles rankings of 14 in 2011 and reached the US Open singles semi-finals in 2014.

Fears for Peng's safety have continued to grow since she said on 3 November she was "forced" into a sexual relationship with former China vice-premier Zhang Gaoli.

Peng made the allegations in a post on Chinese social media site Weibo and they were soon deleted from China's internet.

It is the first time such a claim has been made against one of China's senior political leaders.

Swiss star Roger Federer has added his voice to concerns about Peng's welfare, joining Serena Williams, Novak Djokovic and many other top players in speaking out about the situation.

"I hope she is safe, the tennis world is united for her," said 20-time Grand Slam champion Federer.

"I hope good news will come from her soon."

People across tennis - including other past and present players, coaches and journalists - have been demanding answers about Peng's whereabouts, as have other high-profile sports stars, actors and politicians.

Many have been using #WhereIsPengShuai on Twitter posts, along with a photo of her.

Wimbledon said it had been "working in support of the WTA's efforts" to establish her safety and was "united with the rest of tennis in the need to understand that Peng Shuai is safe".
