Yankees pitcher German finishes 81-game ban

Published in Baseball
Tuesday, 06 October 2020 14:18

NEW YORK -- New York Yankees pitcher Domingo German was reinstated from the restricted list by the commissioner's office on Tuesday after completing an 81-game suspension under Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy.

The 28-year-old right-hander is not eligible to pitch in the postseason because he was on the restricted list on Sept. 15, the last date for postseason eligibility. He will be eligible to pitch at the start of spring training.

German was placed on administrative leave on Sept. 19 last year while MLB investigated an alleged domestic violence incident involving his girlfriend, with whom he has at least one child.

He missed the final nine games of the 2019 regular season and nine postseason games. German accepted an 81-game suspension on Jan. 2 and was credited with the 18 games served. He missed all 60 games of the 2020 regular season and the Yankees' first-round sweep of Cleveland and their Division Series opener against Tampa Bay on Monday.

German's suspension cost him $34,153 of his $577,500 salary last year and his entire $229,509 prorated salary this year of what originally was $619,675.

He also did not accrue major league service during the suspension and at 2 years, 17 days remains shy of salary arbitration eligibility for 2021.

German was 18-3 with a 4.03 ERA at the time of his suspension, becoming the Yankees' ace while Luis Severino was sidelined. German could compete for a spot next season in a rotation set to return Gerrit Cole, Deivi Garcia and Jordan Montgomery.

Masahiro Tanaka, James Paxton and J.A. Happ could become free agents, and Severino will be rehabbing following Tommy John surgery on Feb. 27, 2020.

Jac Haudenschild: At A Crossroads

Published in Racing
Tuesday, 06 October 2020 10:00

It’s difficult to believe, but Jac Haudenschild has been thrilling sprint car fans across the country — and around the world — with his wide-open, up-against-the-fence driving style since 1974.

Think about that for a minute. That’s the year Richard Nixon resigned as president, Dick Gaines won the Knoxville Nationals, a new AMC Gremlin sold for slightly more than $2,400 and Johnny Rutherford won his first Indy 500.

But after 47 seasons of slinging clay, sprint car racing’s “Wild Child” is now 62 years old and he’s come to a crossroads in his career.

“I’m not sure yet; I’ve got to decide what I’m going to do,” Haudenschild told SPEED SPORT when asked about his plans for the future. “I’ve been running my own race car for the last three years and it’s not very profitable, so I’ve got to sit here and think about what I’m going to do down the road.

“If I decide to quit racing, I’ll probably just drive around to some Outlaws races and watch Sheldon (his son) race,” Haudenschild added. “Plus, I’ve usually got a project of some kind going on in the garage, just fixing whatever. Right now, it’s usually race car stuff that I’m working on, so when I’m done racing, I’m going to have to find something else to work on in there.”

Jac Haudenschild has enjoyed an amazing sprint car career. (Frank Smith Photo)

Born on April 7, 1958, in Wooster, Ohio, Haudenschild grew up in a racing family.

“My dad (John) raced in the ’60s and early ’70s. He raced around home and didn’t travel very much,” Haudenschild explained. “The cars were kind of like supermodifieds, but they didn’t have the supermodified bodies on them. They were all homebuilt cars.

“We grew up going to races as kids, hanging out in the pits or the grandstands. We hung around the garage all the time too, so we were pretty mechanically inclined. My dad was a truck driver and worked on semis, so he worked in the garage all the time.

“I started driving for my dad in ’74. My dad owned two race cars and me and my brother (Ed) both raced,” Haudenschild continued. “We had two race cars for quite a few years and we started at the local tracks around home — Lakeview, Wayne County and Mansfield, those were the three tracks we raced at growing up.”

Haudenschild claims he’s never had a job that didn’t involve a helmet and driving suit.

“Racing is all I’ve ever done, but I didn’t know for a while whether I could do it for a living. In the beginning, we just raced for the fun of it. I drove for my dad for a few years and then a guy right out of our hometown there, Wayne Yerian. He had that maroon No. 75 car and we drove that for a couple years. The Nickles brothers started taking me to Florida to East Bay for the Nationals and I started traveling with those guys. Then, when I was driving for Bob Hampshire, we ended up racing three and four nights a week. We raced a lot.”

Tony Schumacher Named Texas Motorplex Legend

Published in Racing
Tuesday, 06 October 2020 11:00

ENNIS, Texas – Tony Schumacher, the winningest NHRA Top Fuel driver in the history of the Texas Motorplex, has been named a Texas Motorplex Legend.

The award, which was first presented last year, will be presented to Schumacher during the opening ceremonies of the 35th annual AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals, Oct. 14-18. During his two and half decade career Schumacher raced in over 500 NHRA national events including over 20 FallNationals. He raced to seven final rounds and won six races and was No. 1 qualifier twice.

“Tony Schumacher is a huge piece of our history at Texas Motorplex and the AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals,” said Billy Meyer of the Texas Motorplex. “He won his first Wally here at the Motorplex and has gone on to win here more times than any other Top Fuel driver. We are honored to recognize him as this year’s Texas Motorplex Legend award recipient and are excited that he is back in the saddle and ready to win. We will have a special presentation for him during opening ceremonies and he will forever be recognized in the Texas Motorplex Champion’s Club.”

Schumacher dominated the Texas Motorplex for a decade winning the event in 2004, ’05, ’09, ’10 and ’14, but it was his first career win at the 1999 Chief Auto Parts Nationals that jump started his career. In a tight points battle Schumacher defeated Scott Kalitta for the win on the way to his first NHRA Top Fuel world championship. The first win is always special for every driver and even today Schumacher can recall the run.

“I most definitely remember that day. The win at the Motorplex is forever because it was me and Scott Kalitta in the final round,” said Schumacher. “I was getting my ass kicked and he was pulling away. It was my ninth final. I remember looking at his dragster and thinking I was getting whipped again and then his car disappeared. It was at a time that was absolutely critical because the battle for the championship was so big and so intense. There were so many people going who is that guy? Where did he come from and why is he in the damn lead?

“To have my first victory at the Motorplex and to go on have such an incredible career with so many great teams and crew chiefs is special. To be recognized by the track that kind of started it all is cool. When you look back 84 wins ago I had zero wins when I was racing there. Not only did we win but we were leading the points, we had ten teams right behind us and we had the weight of the world on us. It was an incredible day and weekend in 1999,” added Schumacher.

Being named Texas Motorplex Legend is an honor that Schumacher was surprised by and accepted with humility. Throughout his illustrious career the driver with the most wins in NHRA Top Fuel history has won many national and international awards. This recognition is a first of many lifetime achievement awards for the sure fire Drag Racing Hall of Famer.

“I have won Driver of the Year and AARBA awards during my so called ‘reign of terror.’ We won a lot of races and accolades but now to be recognized by places like the Texas Motorplex means a lot. Places like the Motorplex mean a lot to me and to be recognized is a great thing. It is where I won my first race. I have won a lot of races there. It really means the most because I live in Austin, Texas and it is the closest track to my home now. It was a track that I raced Super Comp when I was coming up. There are only a few out there that you showed up for as a young kid from Chicago. The Texas Motorplex was one of those tracks. Billy Meyer built a track that everyone had to see.”

Wings part with Abdelkader among NHL buyouts

Published in Hockey
Tuesday, 06 October 2020 11:13

NEW YORK -- NHL teams continue to clear salary cap space with free agency starting later this week.

The Detroit Red Wings placed forward Justin Abdelkader on unconditional waivers Tuesday for the purpose of buying out his contract. The Montreal Canadiens did the same with defenseman Karl Alzner, who had been relegated to the minors for much of last season.

Abdelkader had three years remaining on his contract at a salary cap hit of $4.25 million. His buyout will span six years for Detroit.

Alzner's buyout is four years since he had two years left at a $4.625 million cap hit.

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Jack Johnson cleared unconditional waivers, allowing the team to buy out the remainder of his contract. Johnson's buyout will also last six years since he had three years left on his contract.

Once they clear, Abdelkader and Alzner will join Johnson, New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, Arizona Coyotes winger Michael Grabner and Ottawa Senators winger Bobby Ryan as players bought out this offseason. They immediately become free agents.

The free-agent market opens at noon ET Friday. The salary cap remains flat at $81.5 million for at least the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons.

NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. – The LPGA contests its third major of the season this week at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship. Here's a quick guide to the host venue.

WHERE:

Aronimink Golf Club, outside of Philadelphia. It’s the first time the venue has hosted an LPGA major, but previously held the 1962 PGA Championship, 2003 Senior PGA and, most recently, the 2018 BMW Championship. It is slated to host the PGA Championship again, in 2026.

Specifics for the week:

  • Designer: Donald Ross (opened in 1928); redesigned by Ron Prichard (1995-2003) and then by Gil Hanse (2016-present)
  • 6,577 yards, par 70 (click for course tour)
  • Stimpmeter: 11.5

Previous winners and winning scores:

  • 2018 BMW Championship: Keegan Bradley, 20 under
  • 2011 AT&T National: Nick Watney, 13 under
  • 2010 AT&T National: Justin Rose, 10 under
  • 2003 Senior PGA: John Jacobs, 4 under
  • 1962 PGA Championship: Gary Player, 2 under

KEYS:

Hanse, who has also done design work at Pinehurst, told the KPMG Women’s PGA website that the most significant transformation he and his team did to Aronimink involved the addition of more than 100 bunkers, upping the total to 176 (per the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America).

He also said, keep an eye on the signature 393-yard, par-4 11th as a key hole. And, as for the finish …

“No. 16 is a par 5, a scoring opportunity for players near the end of the round. But they really have to be thoughtful on how they place their shots,” he told the website.

“The 17th is a medium-length par 3, but you have water to deal with there, and a sloping green. And 18, coming up the hill, is played to a great green complex. You’ve got to get your ball in the fairway if you’re going to get it home in two. And 15, that hole is a beast. It really is.”

ADVANTAGE, WHOM?

Power and distance grab headlines at every major, but Hanse believes this week’s championship will be won – or lost – around the greens.

“I think the fairways are fairly generous, so players will have to drive it well, but don’t necessarily need pinpoint accuracy,” Hanse told the website. “I think it’s going to be somebody’s creativity around the greens, the ability to get up and down. You’re going to miss greens there, and it’s the scrambling ability that will be important.”

Press, Heath shirts outsell Utd men after signing

Published in Soccer

Sales of jerseys with the names of United States stars Tobin Heath and Christen Press outsold any of Manchester United's men's players for the first three days after their signing, a club spokesperson has confirmed to ESPN.

Heath and Press joined United in September on one-year deals from the Portland Thorns and Utah Royals respectively in what was seen as a massive coup for the young English club.

They made their United debuts in the side's 3-0 win over Brighton on Sunday with Heath providing an assist. The winger picked out Jane Ross at the far post on the 90th minute and Ross headed home United's third goal.

The two-time World Cup winners are among a number of USWNT players to join the Women's Super League this season, with Sam Mewis and Rose Lavelle joining Manchester City and Alex Morgan joining Tottenham Hotspur.

"I think a lot of people were kind of surprised," Heath told ESPN of her decision to move to England. "I was itching to play football, to play in an environment where you're trying to go for titles. For me it was massive there was interest from Manchester United.

"To sign for such a club was important to me in my football career.

"Manchester United is like the American team in the Premier League, and everyone knows the weight of it back home," she said. "It is so exciting for me to wear a badge that is well known."

Press, who has 58 goals in 138 international caps, told ESPN United is an "exceptional" club.

"For me personally I will always say that I'm here to win. I think that's just the top priority," she added.

"I think here it's just going to all be about winning titles. That's the cups, it's qualifying for Champions League, I feel like that's a title in itself especially for a young club like Manchester United."

The 2019-20 season was United's maiden year in the English top flight after they had won promotion from the Championship under the management of Casey Stoney. The side are fourth in the WSL after two wins and a draw in their first three games.

Mumbai Indians193 for 4 (Yadav 79*, Sharma 35, Gopal 2-28) beat Rajasthan Royals 136 (Butter 70, Archer 24, Bumrah 4-20, Pattinson 2-19) by 57 runs

An inventive 79 not out off 47 balls from Suryakumar Yadav - his highest score in the IPL - carried the Mumbai Indians to 193 for 4, setting up their fourth victory in six matches this IPL. In pursuit of a tall target, the Rajasthan Royals lost three wickets in the powerplay, including that of their captain Steven Smith and Sanju Samson. Jos Buttler then slugged a 44-ball 70, threatening a comeback, but the Royals were ultimately dismissed for 136 in 18.1 overs.

The 57-run victory - which also featured a fearsome Jasprit Bumrah spell (4-20) - meant Mumbai climbed to the top of the points table followed by the Delhi Capitals, who have played one match fewer, at No.2.

After Quinton de Kock and Rohit Sharma sped away to 49-run opening stand, Yadav, in contrast, got off to a slow start - he was on 12 off 11 balls at one point. He watched Sharma and Ishan Kishan hole out off successive balls. He then watched Krunal Pandya, who was promoted to No.5 ahead of his younger brother Hardik and Kieron Pollard, struggle to 12 off 17 balls. However, Yadav's wide range of strokes ensured Mumbai still took 68 from their last five overs and finished very strongly.

Sharma, de Kock quick off the blocks

De Kock, who regained form with 67 against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in Sharjah, set the tone in Abu Dhabi, too, with a crisp four off the first delivery from Ankit Rajpoot, who was picked ahead of left-arm seamer Jaydev Unadkat. The ball slid onto the bat in the early exchanges, with Sharma also using the extra pace of Rajpoot to his advantage. After launching him into the Royals dug out over the long-off fence, he sat back, waiting for the short ball and cracked it away to the left of sweeper cover.

Smith used as many as five bowlers in the powerplay, but it was 19-year old debutant Kartik Tyagi who produced the breakthrough when he bounced out de Kock for 23. Sharma progressed to 35 before legspinner Shreyas Gopal had him caught at long-on with a wrong'un. His first delivery to Kishan, too was a wrong'un, which he spliced to extra-cover. Mumbai were 88 for 3 in the 10th over.

A scoopful of Surya

After using his long reach to get to a pitch of a Gopal legbreak and pump it over extra-cover, Yadav hung back and placed Tyagi either side of third man for fours. Another great piece of placement - late-cut between the keeper and short third man for four brought him a fifty off 33 balls.

The Royals had reserved two overs of Jorfra Archer for Pollard and Hardik at the death, but in the end Pollard wasn't needed at all. While Hardik forced Archer down the ground for four, Yadav unfurled his ramps and scoops to pepper the 'V' behind the wicket and provide Mumbai with a fine final surge.

Injured CF Marte left off Marlins' NLDS roster

Published in Baseball
Tuesday, 06 October 2020 12:04

Starling Marte was left off the 28-man roster of the Miami Marlins for their National League Division Series matchup against the Atlanta Braves, which begins Tuesday.

The center fielder was injured when he was hit in the hand by a pitch thrown by Chicago Cubs reliever Dan Winkler during Game 1 of the Marlins' win in the wild-card round. Marte was diagnosed with a fracture of the fifth metacarpal of his left hand.

He remained on the Miami roster for the decisive Game 2 of the series against the Cubs, but was not used.

Marlins manager Don Mattingly said, "We weren't comfortable with what [Marte] was going to be able to do."

Magneuris Sierra will start in center field for Game 1 against the Braves.

The Marlins added two pitchers to their roster from the wild-card round, including left-handed starter Daniel Castano and right-handed reliever Nick Vincent. Left-handed reliever Stephen Tarpley was left off the LDS roster, with Mattingly citing the right-handed slant of the Atlanta offense as the reason for the bullpen switch.

The Braves will include 15 pitchers and 13 players on their roster for the LDS. Manager Brian Snitker cited the compressed schedule -- a possible five games in five days -- as the main reason for the lopsided roster construction, along with the youth of his starting pitchers. Game 1 starter Max Fried is 26, while Game 2 starter Ian Anderson is 22 and has thrown just six regular-season games in the majors.

Marte, 31, acquired at the trade deadline from the Arizona Diamondbacks, hit .245 with four homers, 13 RBIs and five stolen bases. Marte previously played in three straight postseasons for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2013 to 2015.
