Padres' RHP Clevinger starting Game 1 of NLDS

Published in Baseball
Tuesday, 06 October 2020 12:04

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Right-hander Mike Clevinger is on the 28-player roster for the San Diego Padres for the NL Division Series and starting Game 1 against the Los Angeles Dodgers after missing the first round of the playoffs.

While Clevinger was among the 15 pitchers on the Padres roster released Tuesday, fellow starter Dinelson Lamet was again left off because of injury. Clevinger (elbow impingement) and Lamet (biceps tightness) both got hurt in their final regular-season starts and weren't on the roster for the wild-card round against St. Louis.

The Dodgers added a pitcher to their roster for the NLDS, where they will have 14 pitchers and 14 position players after carrying only 13 pitchers for the first-round series against Milwaukee.

Right-handed reliever Dylan Floro (3-0, 2.59 ERA) was the pitcher added for the longer NLDS. Floro struck out 19 with only four walks in his 25 appearances during the regular season.

Keibert Ruiz, a third catcher, isn't on the NLDS roster after being active but not playing against the Brewers. The Dodgers made one switch among position players, with rookie infielder Gavin Lux replacing Edwin Rios.

San Diego also added left-hander Ryan Weathers and outfielder Greg Allen. Right-hander Dan Altavilla and infielders Greg Garcia and Jorge Mateo were left off this round.

The Padres last week became the first team to use eight or more pitchers in three consecutive playoff games. Nine relievers combined on a four-hit shutout in the clinching Game 3 against the Cardinals.

The 28-player rosters for the best-of-five series between the Padres and Dodgers:

SAN DIEGO

Pitchers (15): RH Austin Adams, RH Mike Clevinger, RH Zach Davies, LH Tim Hill, RH Pierce Johnson, LH Adrian Morejon, RH Chris Paddack, RH Emilio Pagan, RH Luis Patino, LH Drew Pomeranz, RH Garrett Richards, LH Matt Strahm, RH Trevor Rosenthal, RH Craig Stammen, LH Ryan Weathers.

Catchers (3): Luis Campusano, Jason Castro, Austin Nola

Infielders (5): Jake Cronenworth, Eric Hosmer, Manny Machado, Mitch Moreland, Fernando Tatis Jr.

Outfielders (5): Greg Allen, Trent Grisham, Wil Myers, Tommy Pham, Jurickson Profar

LOS ANGELES

Pitchers (14): RH Pedro Baez, RH Walker Buehler, RH Dylan Floro, RH Tony Gonsolin, LH Victor Gonzalez, RH Brusdar Graterol, RH Kenley Jansen, RH Joe Kelly, LH Clayton Kershaw, LH Adam Kolarek, RH Dustin May, LH Jake McGee, RH Blake Treinen, LH Julio Urias.

Catchers (2): Austin Barnes, Will Smith

Infielders (5): Matt Beaty, Gavin Lux, Max Muncy, Corey Seager, Justin Turner.

Outfielders (5): Cody Bellinger, Mookie Betts, Terrance Gore, Joc Pederson, AJ Pollock.

Infielders/Outfielders (2): Enrique Hernandez, Chris Taylor.

Rosters have not been announced for the NL side of the Division Series round, but Braves manager Brian Snitker says his club will carry 15 pitchers and 13 position players for Atlanta's series against Miami. Snitker cited the possibility of five games in five days, combined with the youth of his starting pitchers, as the factors leading to the lopsided roster construction.

Love Back With Venturini For ARCA East Finale

Published in Racing
Tuesday, 06 October 2020 07:48

CONCORD, N.C. — After a successful first outing with Venturini Motorsports at Winchester (Ind.) Speedway, Toyota Racing Development driver Jesse Love will return to the organization for this weekend’s ARCA Menards Series East finale at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Fla.

Love, 15, will wheel the No. 15 JBL Toyota Camry at the half-mile paved oval, joining teammates Corey Heim and Mason Diaz in the Pensacola 200 presented by Inspectra Thermal Solutions, the sixth and final race of the season for the East Series.

It marks the latest step in a continued upward trajectory for Love, who impressed many with a fourth-place finish in his Venturini debut at Winchester.

“To be honest, I feel like this has been one of those things where I’ve really had to earn the opportunities that I’ve been given,” Love noted. “I got a really great opportunity to go run Winchester after a really great year so far in the (ARCA Menards Series) West, and because of that performance we got that opportunity for Winchester. I feel like we did pretty decent up there. There are some things that I could’ve done better that I learned from … whether it was things like restarts or communication, just things like that that you have to learn from experience.

“It’s definitely good to get a second chance and I’m just super grateful and happy that we were able to get a second chance with Venturini Motorsports to build on what we started,” Love continued. “To do it at a place like Five Flags is pretty cool; I feel like it’s one of those places that tends to suit how I would drive the race track pretty well. So that’s a good thing and we’ll see what we can do with it.”

While Love has never raced at Five Flags, he did turn laps at a somewhat-similar Florida short track — New Smyrna Speedway — in a super late model during the World Series of Asphalt Racing in February.

That experience is something that Love is hoping to lean on as he gets up to speed in Pensacola.

“Even a place like Winchester was honestly, in my opinion, pretty similar to New Smyrna and what I think Pensacola will be this weekend,” Love said. “You’re pulling a lot of G forces there, but it’s really not as much line-dependent as much as it is momentum and how you’re finding speed. I feel like that was really important at New Smyrna and is going to be really important at Five Flags too. You just have to find speed and figure out where your car is best and make it work to give yourself the best chance.

“It’s going to be a long race, but only one lap really matters. We just have to work on it and make sure we’re there at the end and in a good position to at least have a shot to win the race.”

Love has found a comfort zone for extended-distance races recently, which particularly showed at Winchester, when he had one of the fastest cars on track at the end of the longer runs.

He’ll have another opportunity to showcase that skillset this weekend.

“I think I do really well when the tires get hot and everyone is kind of struggling for grip. I feel like that’s one of my strong suits, if you will,” Love explained. “Obviously, it showed at Winchester. I wasn’t the best one on the short run, but I was really good in the long run. I felt like we were the best car as the race trended over more and more and more green-flag laps. Hopefully we’ll get some long green-flag runs in at Pensacola to where we can chip away at it and get faster and faster.”

Love knows that to win on Saturday, he’ll have to stop the likes of Sam Mayer and Ty Gibbs, who have combined to win every race this season in the East Series.

That doesn’t intimidate the California teenager, however. If anything, it motivates Love further.

“At the end of the day, you’ve just kind of got to break their momentum,” Love said of his strategy to take the fight to Mayer and Gibbs. “Obviously, you know, they’re pretty good at playing the mental game, so you just have to put yourself in a position to capitalize when they make a mistake or force them into one if the opportunity is there to do that. I’m really confident in the team. Venturini Motorsports has been really fast at Five Flags in general. So we just have to run up front and put pressure on those two guys, and make no mistakes while capitalizing on their mistakes.

“I’m really confident and we’ll just get to racing and put on some good short-track racing. I feel like that’s our best shot at beating them when it comes down to go time on Saturday.”

The Pensacola 200 presented by Inspectra Thermal Solutions goes green at 8 p.m. ET Saturday, with live coverage through Trackpass on NBC Sports Gold.

Larry McReynolds Receives Smokey Yunick Award

Published in Racing
Tuesday, 06 October 2020 08:11

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Larry McReynolds, who won 23 NASCAR Cup Series races as crew chief for drivers such as Hall of Famers Davey Allison, Dale Jarrett and Dale Earnhardt, received the Smokey Yunick Award Monday ahead of the third running of the Bank of America ROVAL 400 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Legendary car owner and mechanic Henry “Smokey” Yunick instituted the award in 1997 to annually recognize an individual who rose from humble beginnings to make a major impact on the motorsports industry. Yunick passed away on May 9, 2001, and Charlotte Motor Speedway has continued the award in his memory.

McReynolds was surprised with the award, a golden wrench, during a special presentation by Speedway Motorsports President and CEO Marcus Smith on FOX’s Race Hub.

He joins joins a long list of NASCAR greats in receiving the honor, including Cotton Owens, Banjo Mathews, Ralph Moody, Ray Evernham, Dale Inman, Richard Childress, Rick Hendrick and Waddell Wilson, among others.

“That list has a lot of great names and I think a lot of creative genius,” said Smith. “The ingenuity and the ideas that drive championship racing are what it takes to get this wrench and I’m so excited to be able to give it to you.”

“You have absolutely swept me off my feet,” McReynolds said. “Just to have my name in the same paragraph as a Dale Inman or Leonard Wood, people like that, is quite overwhelming. It starts with the people that I work with. We all know it’s about people…

“The one thing about looking at that list that makes it so fulfilling is to know that I’m on there with Hall of Famer, my best friend, Robert Yates. Honestly, if it wasn’t for Robert Yates, I probably wouldn’t be here accepting this. He taught me so much.”

Born in Birmingham, Ala., McReynolds became enthralled with the mechanical side of the local racing scene. He moved to North Carolina in 1980 to begin a NASCAR career and eventually worked his way up to crew chief.

McReynolds’ first full season as a NASCAR Cup Series crew chief was in 1986 when he called the shots for the No. 26 King Racing Buick owned by drag racer Kenny Bernstein and driven by Joe Ruttman. His first victory came at the Watkins Glen International road course in 1988 with Ricky Rudd driving the King Racing entry.

In 1991, McReynolds teamed with Yates and Allison to form one of the sport’s most potent combinations. Together, they won 11 races, including the 1991 Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, before Allison died on July 13, 1993, from injuries suffered in a helicopter crash.

Robert Yates Racing and the No. 28 team eventually rebounded from the devastating loss and McReynolds returned to Victory Lane with Ernie Irvan (seven times) and Dale Jarrett (once) before moving to Richard Childress Racing for the 1997 season.

At RCR, McReynolds was on top of the pit box in 1998 when Dale Earnhardt finally won the Daytona 500 and he spent more than two-and-a-half seasons working alongside driver Mike Skinner.

“People ask me, what are my most special wins,” McReynolds said. “Well, all of them. I won 23, but I lost 457 of them, so they’re all really special. Two Daytona 500s, and, you know there’s only one first. To get that very first win at Watkins Glen with Ricky Rudd in 1988. Donnie Allison told me when I left Birmingham; he said, it’s going to be a long time before you see a checkered flag. Well he was right, it took about eight and a half years before I got to see a checkered flag. But, they’re all special because they’re hard to come by.”

Stepping into the FOX broadcast booth in 2001, McReynolds was originally paired with legendary driver Darrell Waltrip and veteran broadcaster Mike Joy, a combination that remained for 15 years. His broadcasting role eventually evolved and today McReynolds offers his unique perspective on everything from rule infractions to pit strategy during each race.

The will be no Latin America Amateur Championship next year.

The USGA, R&A and Masters Tournament announced Tuesday in a joint statement that the 2021 championship, which was scheduled for Jan. 14-17 at Lima Golf Club in Peru, has been canceled because of "complications presented by the COVID-19 pandemic."

Future championship plans will be announced at a later date, the release said.

The LAAC, first played in 2014, annually awards its champion with invites into the Masters, Open Championship, British Amateur, U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open sectional qualifying. Argentina's Abel Gallegos is the defending champion while Arkansas junior Julian Perico was expected to be among the Peru natives to tee it up.

Arsenal's Ozil offers to pay Gunnersaurus' salary

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 06 October 2020 09:15

Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has offered to pay the salary of Gunnersaurus in an attempt to avoid the club mascot's redundancy.

Jerry Quy, the man who wore the dinosaur costume since the character's creation in 1993, has been told his job no longer exists as a result of the absence of fans at Emirates Stadium due to COVID-19.

- Deadline Day: All the rumours and done deals
- Stream FC Daily on ESPN+

The decision has prompted an angry reaction among supporters and ex-players, especially as the decision emerged on the same day the Gunners paid Atletico Madrid £45 million to sign Thomas Partey.

Arsenal announced in August that they were making 55 non-playing staff redundant as the club reacts to the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic while the first-team squad were asked to take a 12.5% pay cut which dropped to 7.5% after qualifying for this season's Europa League.

Ozil is the club's highest earner on £350,000-a-week but while he refused to join his teammates in taking a salary reduction, he has now offered to cover the cost of reinstating Quy for the next year until his contract expires next summer.

"I was so sad that Jerry Quy aka our famous & loyal mascot @Gunnersaurus and integral part of our club was being made redundant after 27 years," Ozil posted on Twitter. "As such, I'm offering to reimburse @Arsenal with the full salary of our big green guy as long as I will be an Arsenal player..."

Quy's role is part-time and therefore not counted among the 55 redundancies, although he has also been involved with the club in a supporter liaison capacity.

A club spokesman told ESPN: "Gunnersaurus is not extinct and will return to action when fans are allowed back at matches."

However, it is unclear whether Quy would be given the opportunity to resume the role and it remains uncertain when that could be as coronavirus cases continue to rise in the United Kingdom with the government shelving plans to allow supporters back from Oct. 1.

Ozil is currently frozen out of the first-team picture under manager Mikel Arteta having not featured in any competition since March 7.

He was made available in the summer transfer window but no deal could be reached with any club given the 31-year-old's determination to see out the final year of his contract.

Ozil could suffer a fresh blow in the next 24 hours with Arsenal set to finalise their 25-man squad for the Europa League group stage. UEFA rules dictate only 17 non-homegrown players can be selected but the Gunners currently have 19.

Transfer window winners and losers: Mourinho, U.S. on top

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 06 October 2020 09:14

The latest transfer window in history has finally closed and as you'd expect, some clubs and players have done better than others.

Some teams did their business early, while others left it to the last minute after scrambling around for deadline-day bargains -- although time will tell whether they are canny transfers or expensive mistakes. Big moves that were supposed happen failed to materialise, while some unexpected deals came to fruition.

So as the dust settles on deadline day, who have been the winners and losers of the 2020 summer transfer window?

- Deadline Day as it happened: Arsenal sign Partey, Man United busy
- Transfer grades: Arsenal get A- for Partey deal
- All the major confirmed deals from the transfer window

LOSERS

Lionel Messi

Football held its breath at the end of August when it became clear that Lionel Messi was ready to force a move away from Barcelona. He even sent a burofax to the club to prove his intentions.

As the days ticked by, it looked as though the unthinkable really was about to happen, with Manchester City waiting to strike a deal to reunite Messi with former Barca boss Pep Guardiola at the Etihad. But when it came to the crunch, the prospect of a lengthy legal battle over his €700 million release clause prompted Messi to back down and abandon his plan to leave the Camp Nou. However, after seeing close friend Luis Suarez forced out of the club and transferred to La Liga title rivals Atletico Madrid, the tension between Messi and Barca remains.

- Messi and Barcelona: The inside story on how everything fell apart

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

The Manchester United manager went into the window wanting Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho and a commanding centre-back but, despite saying that wealthy United could take advantage of football's financial crisis because of the coronavirus pandemic, he ended up with neither.

Solskjaer wanted quality and quantity this window. Donny van de Beek for £40m from Ajax represents good value, but the deadline-day signings of Edinson Cavani and Alex Telles were last-minute patch-up deals and teenagers Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo are unlikely to make a serious contribution anytime soon. (In Diallo's case, he won't join United until January.)

Solskjaer has been let down by those in charge of United's recruitment, just as his predecessors were before him, and the end result is a squad once again ill-equipped to challenge for top honours.

Ogden: Man United have more driftwood than a shipwreck

Mark Ogden reflects on the current predicament in the centre-half position at Man United.

Memphis Depay

The Lyon forward has rebuilt his career in France since struggling to succeed at Manchester United following a big-money move in 2015, to the extent that new Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman wanted to sign his fellow Dutchman.

Negotiations with Depay and Lyon progressed enough for Barca to believe that a deal could be done on deadline day. But Barca's failure to find a buyer for Ousmane Dembele meant they could not sign Depay, so the Netherlands international must now focus on another campaign in Ligue 1.

Mesut Ozil

Remember him? The Arsenal midfielder has not kicked a ball for the club, or even been selected for a matchday squad, since March and manager Mikel Arteta has made it clear that he has no future at the Emirates. But with a year still to run on his £350,000-a-week contract, Ozil has proved impossible for Arsenal to offload during the window as nobody will pay even half those wages for a talented, but unpredictable, 31-year-old.

With Arteta building for the future, Ozil is highly unlikely to play again for the club. He may strike a deal to move in January, but by then he will have missed 10 months of football when he could have been playing elsewhere.

Robson: Partey can do every job in Arsenal's midfield

Stewart Robson says Thomas Partey's arrival at Arsenal makes the Gunners serious top-four contenders.

Sergio Romero

The Manchester United goalkeeper is now third-choice at Old Trafford following Dean Henderson's return from loan at Sheffield United to challenge David de Gea for the No. 1 spot.

The Argentina international was desperate for a move away, but despite interest from Everton, Romero remains at United with little prospect of competitive football for the next three months.

And to make matters worse, his wife, Eliana, took to social media on deadline day to criticise United for their failure to find a club for her husband.

Max Aarons

Norwich City defender Max Aarons has a big future in the game and you will certainly be hearing plenty about him in years to come, but this was a window that saw the 20-year-old targeted by Barcelona and Bayern Munich and miss out on a move to both.

The full-back remains a Norwich player, with a season in the EFL Championship ahead of him, rather than the prospect of playing in the Champions League with, and against, the world's top clubs. His time will come, but when you are linked with Barca and Bayern and fail to get the move, it must be a tough one to swallow.

WINNERS

Everton

Until this transfer window, Everton had been of those clubs that made terrible decisions in the market by spending way too much on players whose previous club had only been too happy to bid farewell to them -- Theo Walcott, Alex Iwobi and Moise Kean being recent examples.

But under manager Carlo Ancelotti, Everton have been transformed as a club that makes smart signings for good value. James Rodriguez from Real Madrid has been Everton's headline signing this summer, but Allan, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Ben Godfrey are quality additions, with goalkeeper Robin Olsen arriving on deadline day to compete with Jordan Pickford. Everton have had a great window.

- Connelly: Everton's perfect start -- how have they done it, and how far can they go?

Jose Mourinho

Transfer windows and Jose Mourinho usually mean only one thing: trouble!

In his last two jobs, at Manchester United and Chelsea, Mourinho's frustration over summer transfer dealings triggered fall-outs with his bosses at Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge that eventually saw him lose his job. But at Spurs, despite the prospect of clashes with the notoriously parsimonious chairman Daniel Levy, Mourinho has enjoyed a summer that has seen him land a series of top targets, as well as Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale on loan. Mourinho has been a happy manager this summer and Spurs can only benefit from that.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting probably felt as though he hit the jackpot when he sealed a move to Paris Saint-Germain after a pretty unspectacular season in the Premier League with Stoke City in 2018.

But after two years winning trophies and playing with Neymar and Kylian Mbappe in Paris, the Cameroon forward has done it again by completing another dream move to Bayern Munich.

At 31, the German-born forward could not have picked a better transfer than a return home to play for the Champions League winners.

Douglas Costa's return to Bayern 'a surprise'

Archie Rhind-Tutt says Douglas Costa's return to Bayern is about getting more depth in the squad.

United States

The growing contingent of USMNT players in Europe's big leagues has continued this year, but big moves secured by Sergino Dest and Weston McKennie points to an increasing value placed on American talent. Dest's move from Ajax to Barcelona, which followed McKennie's switch from Schalke to Juventus, means that the U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter now has players at some of the biggest clubs in the world, with Christian Pulisic having already made his big move to Chelsea in 2019.

Giovanni Reyna and Tyler Adams look set to continue their progress in Germany with Dortmund and RB Leipzig respectively, making these exciting times for the U.S..

Borussia Dortmund

German giants Dortmund probably won the January transfer window by beating Manchester United to the signing of Erling Haaland from FC Salzburg and they had a pretty good summer window at the expense of United too. Not only did Dortmund deny United in the race to sign teenager Jude Bellingham from Birmingham City, they also made it clear that they would not be railroaded into selling Sancho.

Dortmund set a deadline of Aug. 10 and stuck to it. United complained of Dortmund wanting too much for the England winger, but the winners are the team that ended up with Sancho. And it wasn't United.

Frank Lampard

It is too early to say whether Chelsea's £240m summer spending spree is a blessing or a curse for manager Frank Lampard, because he will certainly have to deliver a dividend after such a big outlay on new players.

But with the attacking talents of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech arriving at Stamford Bridge along with Thiago Silva, Ben Chilwell and Edouard Mendy coming in to strengthen defensively, Lampard has been given the backing most managers can only dream of.

Every area of weakness in Chelsea's squad has been addressed, so the pressure is now on the manager to make it all come together and ensure silverware is won this season.

Andre Russell threat looms large over Chennai Super Kings

Published in Cricket
Tuesday, 06 October 2020 06:19

Big picture

Their batting looked short of power and inspiration through their first four matches of the season, but something clicked into place for the Chennai Super Kings against Kings XI Punjab on Sunday. Yes, nothing masks problems like a 181-run opening stand, but that wasn't the only encouragement the Super Kings took out of that game. With Ambati Rayudu and Dwayne Bravo back from injury, their line-up just looks a whole lot healthier, and with three No. 8s at Nos. 9, 10, and 11 - in Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar and Piyush Chawla - they have the sort of depth few other sides in the IPL can match.

This isn't to say the Super Kings have turned into a world-beating outfit overnight, or even that they can consistently beat the IPL's heavyweights. Kings XI didn't aim high enough with the bat, and their bowling attack is one of the weakest in the tournament. The Kolkata Knight Riders are likely to present the Super Kings a far stiffer challenge.

The Knight Riders haven't quite found their groove yet this season, with Sunil Narine and Dinesh Karthik looking off-colour and with Andre Russell and Pat Cummins not quite hitting peak form just yet. The law of averages, however, suggests at least one of them will come roaring back into form in the very near future, and the Super Kings will hope they aren't at the receiving end when that happens.

Likely XIs

Chennai Super Kings: 1 Shane Watson, 2 Faf du Plessis, 3 Ambati Rayudu, 4 Kedar Jadhav, 5 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Ravindra Jadeja, 7 Dwayne Bravo, 8 Sam Curran, 9 Shardul Thakur, 10 Deepak Chahar, 11 Piyush Chawla

Kolkata Knight Riders: 1 Sunil Narine, 2 Shubman Gill, 3 Nitish Rana, 4 Dinesh Karthik (capt & wk), 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Andre Russell, 7 Rahul Tripathi, 8 Pat Cummins, 9 Kamlesh Nagarkoti, 10 Shivam Mavi, 11 Varun Chakravarthy

Strategy punt

  • The one thing that makes all three of the Knight Riders' big overseas hitters - Narine at the top of the order, and Russell and Eoin Morgan lower down - uncomfortable, to varying extents, is fast, short-pitched bowling. Unlike the Mumbai Indians or the Delhi Capitals, however, the Super Kings don't have anyone in their first-choice attack who can bowl in that manner. Just for this reason, they might think of bringing back either Lungi Ngidi or Josh Hazlewood, in place of Dwayne Bravo. It wouldn't be an easy change to make, given that Bravo, apart from his death-bowling skills, adds real heft to their lower order, and just his presence helps free up the batsmen playing above him. But if there's one opposition that calls out for including at least one out-and-out fast bowler in your attack, it's the Knight Riders.

  • This becomes even more imperative when you consider how destructive Russell has been against the Super Kings in recent seasons. Since 2018, he's scored 98 runs in the slog overs (16-20) against the Super Kings without being dismissed. And why leave out Bravo? Maybe because Russell has hit him for 78 runs in 30 balls across four innings in the IPL, without being dismissed.

  • Why bowl fast and short to Russell? Well, since the 2018 season, fast bowlers have dismissed him significantly more times while bowling short (9) than any other length, according to ESPNcricinfo's data, with the traditional good length (4) a distant second. His control percentage against short balls (53.25) is his lowest against any length, and his strike rate against short balls (170.13) is the second-lowest behind yorkers (110.53). Yorkers come with very little margin for error, though, with Russell striking at 228.95 against full-tosses and 337.50 against full balls. Short balls have a greater margin for error, with Russell striking at 175.32 against short-of-good-length balls.

  • The key wicket for the Knight Riders, meanwhile, could be Shane Watson. The Australian opener has made ten 40-plus scores for the Super Kings, and nine of them have come in wins. How can the Knight Riders rein Watson in? Narine hasn't been the force he used to be with the ball, but he has excellent numbers against Watson: 28 balls over six innings, conceding just 29 runs and dismissing him four times. It wouldn't be a bad idea to hand Narine the new ball.

Stats that matter

  • In Sam Curran, the Super Kings have a genuine lower-order asset they could look to promote more often. Of all batsmen who've faced at least 60 balls in the IPL since the 2019 season, Curran's strike rate of 197.29 is the third-highest behind Jofra Archer (198.46) and Russell (197.87). Even more impressively, Curran's strike rate of 177 over the first 10 balls of his innings is better than anyone else in IPL history.

  • MS Dhoni has famously never hit a boundary off Narine in the IPL. That run of no fours and sixes extends to 12 meetings, which have produced 29 runs off 59 balls, and one dismissal.

  • Dhoni needs one six to reach 300 in T20 cricket.

  • Russell needs two wickets to reach 300 in T20s.

  • Pat Cummins needs one wicket to reach 100 in T20s.

The BCB has announced a one-day competition between three teams - to be led by Tamim Iqbal, Mahmudullah and Najmul Hossain Shanto - between October 11 and 23 to build up towards the return of domestic cricket in Bangladesh. The three teams will play each other twice in the league stage, with the top-two teams meeting in the final. All players, support staffers, match officials and others connected to the matches, which will be day-nighters, are going to be placed in a bio-secure bubble during the course of the tournament.

Most members of the 15-man squads are players who were part of the two-leg training camp held since September 20 in preparation for the now-aborted Sri Lanka tour. To that group, the selectors have added some members of 2020 Under-19 World Cup-winning squad, including captain Akbar Ali, as well as players from the BCB's high-performance programme; one specialist legspinner has been added to each team too. The senior team management has also mandated that all 45 players must be selected for at least two matches.

Once the tour of Sri Lanka was postponed, the BCB had announced that the players would continue to train at their camp in Dhaka, during which the players would play two intra-squad two-day games and one three-day game. The two-dayers are done, and the three-day contest now stands cancelled.

Mashrafe Mortaza, who resigned from ODI captaincy in March this year, was not included in any of the squads. "Mashrafe will be playing the T20 tournament but not this one-day tournament," BCB president Nazmul Hassan said. "It is not that he doesn't want to play. [But] he has to be quarantined [after having been treated for Covid-19] and will need time to regain fitness."

The T20 tournament Hassan referred to is likely to be a five-team affair, to be held in mid-November. The BCB is yet to decide whether it will sponsor the event on its own or bring corporate houses to own the teams.

"We have to decide if it will be a corporate league or a BCB-sponsored event," Hassan said. "We also want to see if we can allow foreign players. It is likely to be a five-team event, which will involve 75 local players. All we need is to ensure who will manage the teams and how they will manage social distancing in this pandemic. Whether they will send the players home after the games, we just want to ensure these things first."

Abu Jayed, who had tested positive for Covid-19 on September 23 - the same day Saif Hassan, who had earlier tested positive too, returned a negative test - has since tested negative, and both players were included in the squads.
