Woody Kincaid and Nico Young also seal 10,000m selection for Paris while Quincy Wilson runs under-18 world best of 44.66 for 400m

Grant Fisher led Woody Kincaid and Nico Young home as the three men nailed selection for Paris in the 10,000m on the first day of the US Olympic Team Trials in Eugene, Oregon, on Friday (June 21).

Making a break with a kilometre to go, Fisher ran away from his rivals to clock 27:49.47

It feels really good, Fisher said. Theres a lot of anticipation going into the trials. You never know whats going to happen.

Its going to be really, really hard in Paris. There are a lot of good athletes this year. Anything can happen. I want to get in there and mix it up. The 10,000m is a straight final so I just need to have one good day. Ive been close to the medals before and Ive never got them. Hopefully this is my time.

Fisher will be aiming for selection in the 5000m too in coming days.

Elsewhere, ShaCarri Richardson showed blistering form in the womens 100m with a 10.88 (0.3) win despite stumbling at the start.

Quincy Wilson, who is only 16, clocked 44.66 in the mens 400m a world under-18 best and US high school record. He was also the second fastest qualifier in the event from the first round.

The old high school record was 44.69 held by Darrell Robinson and had stood since 1982, whereas the world under-18 mark was 44.84 held by Justin Robinson since 2019.

With the US system using the cut-throat first three past the post system, there are always some shocks. On the first day of the trials the US pole vault record-holder KC Lightfoot went out after failing at 5.60m.
