ShaCarri Richardson wins US Olympic trials 100m in 10.71

World leading mark for Richardson in Eugene, Oregon, on Saturday as Ryan Crouser also secures selection for Paris

ShaCarri Richardson stormed to a world leading time of 10.71 (0.8) to win the womens 100m at the US Olympic Trials in Eugene. The 24-year-old beat her training partners Melissa Jefferson and Twanisha Terry, all of whom are in the same group coached by Dennis Mitchell.

Richardson pounded her chest as she crossed the line nine hundredths of a second ahead of Jefferson. She is now expected to race the 200m in coming days too.

Three years ago Richardson won the same trials race but did not compete at the Tokyo Olympics after testing positive for marijuana.

This year she looks unlikely to make the same mistake and will go into the Paris Games as the reigning world champion after winning in Budapest last summer in 10.65.

I feel honoured, said Richardson. I feel every chapter Ive been through in my life designed and prepared me for this moment. I cannot wait to go to Paris and represent.

Slow out of the blocks, she accelerated to take the lead at halfway before surging to victory, with Jefferson clocking 10.80 and Terry 10.89.

Ryan Crouser, the shot put world record-holder, won his event with 22.84m ahead of Joe Kovacs (22.43m) and Payton Otterdahl (22.26m).

Jasmine Moore won the womens triple jump with her final attempt of 14.26m ahead of Keturah Orji and Tori Franklin.

Heath Baldwin won the decathlon with 8625 ahead of Zach Ziemek and Harrison Williams.

In the rounds, Noah Lyles led the 100m qualifiers with 9.92, while Yared Nuguse equalled Matt Centrowitzs trials 1500m record of 3:34.09 with a front-running performance in his semi-final.
