Event to be staged at the Atakoy Athletics Arena, venue for the 2012 World Indoor Championships
The 2023 European Athletics Indoor Championships have been awarded to Istanbul, Turkey.
The action will take place at the Atakoy Athletics Arena, which staged the World Indoor Championships in 2012.
“Istanbul submitted a strong bid and the Council is very pleased to award the 2023 European Athletics Indoor Championships to Istanbul,” said European Athletics interim president Dobromir Karamarinov, speaking on the second day of the 160th European Athletics Council Meeting which was held virtually because of the coronavirus pandemic.
“The facilities in Istanbul are among the best in Europe which will help the athletes to achieve their best performance.
“I’m sure all visitors will enjoy the famous Turkish hospitality as well.”
The 2021 European Athletics Indoor Championships are due to take place in Torun, Poland from March 5-7.
The first day of the Council Meeting saw the 2024 European Championships awarded to Rome.
European Athletics added that the host city for the 2023 European Athletics U23 Championships, which was initially due to be announced this week, will be allocated at a later date.
