Colorado unretires 3 numbers for football recruits

Published in Breaking News
Wednesday, 05 February 2020 17:50

BOULDER, Colo. -- Colorado will bring three hallowed football numbers out of retirement in response to the growing requests from recruits.

Byron "Whizzer" White's No. 24, Joe Romig's No. 67 and Bobby Anderson's No. 11 will all be worn again. The families of White, who died in 2002, Romig and Anderson approved the decision to bring back their numbers.

Those three players will still be honored through a patch that will appear on the jerseys, bearing their names and the years they played for Colorado.

"Current players and recruits ask all the time for jersey numbers, and often the retired ones have come up," Colorado athletic director Rick George said Wednesday in a statement. "It should also bring a spotlight back to those three players every time a TV camera shows them head-on or a picture appears in a newspaper or online. The names White, Romig and Anderson will be celebrated all over again."

White had his number retired after his senior season in 1937, when he became the school's first All-American in football. White played professional football, graduated from Yale Law School and was appointed by President John F. Kennedy to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1962. He retired from the bench in 1993.

"It will be an honor to watch No. 24 in action for Colorado again," his family said through his son, Charles.

Romig was an offensive guard and linebacker for Colorado. He had his jersey number retired soon after his senior season in 1961.

"It's absolutely fine that my number comes back into circulation, especially if it helps the program," Romig said. "It's an honor to be remembered."

Anderson played quarterback for Colorado before switching to tailback during the 1969 season. He set 18 single-game, single-season and career records in his three seasons with the Buffaloes. He rushed for 2,729 yards and had more than 5,000 yards of total offense.

"I've had my day in the sun, but I will appreciate and be very proud of how it will continue to be honored," Anderson said.

One number that will remain unavailable is 19 -- at least for a little while. It was worn by tailback Rashaan Salaam, who won the Heisman Trophy following the 1994 season. The number was retired in 2017. He took his own life on Dec. 5, 2016. He was 42.

The No. 19 will remain retired for at least 19 years to honor Salaam.

Pistons' Drummond not bothered by trade rumors

Published in Basketball
Wednesday, 05 February 2020 20:42

Andre Drummond wasn't about to predict where he'd be playing in a couple days.

"Your guess is as good as mine," he said. "I don't know what's going to happen. I'm going to go to sleep tonight and wake up and find out what happens."

Drummond had 31 points and 19 rebounds Wednesday night as the Detroit Pistons handed the visiting Phoenix Suns their fourth consecutive loss, 116-108. It was the 402nd double-double for Drummond, putting him in a tie with Bill Laimbeer for third on the team's career list.

There's been trade speculation about Drummond, and this was Detroit's final game before Thursday's NBA trade deadline. The 26-year-old had 20 points and 11 rebounds by halftime and finished just two points shy of his career high.

He was asked afterward if the possibility of this being his last game with the Pistons had crossed his mind.

"I've been hearing that for the past four years," he said. "It don't faze me."

Source: Rose out of Skills Challenge due to injury

Published in Basketball
Wednesday, 05 February 2020 17:02

Detroit Pistons guard Derrick Rose has dropped out of the Skills Challenge at NBA All-Star Weekend in Chicago for reasons that are "injury-related," a source told ESPN.

The 2011 MVP was scheduled to compete in front of his hometown crowd during the All-Star Showcase on Feb. 15 at the United Center.

Rose, who left the Pistons' win over Denver on Sunday with a groin issue, was ruled out of their game against Phoenix on Wednesday with a left hip abductor strain.

He previously earned the skills title as a member of the Chicago Bulls as a rookie in 2009.

Rose, 31, is averaging 18.5 points and 5.8 assists per game, his most since the 2011-12 season, while shooting a career-best 49.8% from the field.

Raptors win team-record 12th in row, stun Pacers

Published in Basketball
Wednesday, 05 February 2020 19:54

TORONTO -- Serge Ibaka hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 30 seconds remaining, and the Toronto Raptors rallied from 19 down to beat the Indiana Pacers 119-118 on Wednesday, setting a franchise record with their 12th consecutive victory.

"He deserved it because he's been working his tail off on his shooting,'' Raptors coach Nick Nurse said.

Kyle Lowry had 32 points, 10 assists and 8 rebounds, and Ibaka scored a season-high 30 as Toronto fought back after trailing by 11 with less than four minutes to play. The defending NBA champions scored the final 11 points of the game.

According to Elias Sports Bureau research, the Raptors are the sixth defending champions in the past 35 seasons to record their franchise's longest win streak. Four of the previous five returned to the NBA Finals, and three went on to repeat.

"We play 48 minutes,'' Lowry said. "That's how we play. We gave ourselves a chance, put the press on, made some shots, got aggressive and played better defense down the stretch.''

Toronto's closing offense was pretty good, too. A trio of Raptors scored in double figures in the fourth, led by Ibaka's 15 points.

Ibaka said a pep talk from Nurse inspired him to keep firing even after he struggled from distance early.

"Nick told me in a timeout, 'Serge, keep shooting with confidence, just push the ball,''' Ibaka said. "He gave me a lot of confidence.''

Pascal Siakam scored 25 points, Terence Davis had 11, and Fred VanVleet added 10 to help the Raptors earn their 12th straight home win over Indiana.

Malcolm Brogdon scored 24 points and Justin Holiday added 22, but the Pacers lost their third straight. Domantas Sabonis had 15 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.

The Raptors trailed 106-103 after Siakam's driving dunk with 5:05 left, but Holiday made a 3, Victor Oladipo hit a jumper, and Brogdon connected from deep to put the Pacers up 114-103 with 3:50 to go.

Siakam hit one of two at the line with 1:15 left to bring Toronto within four, then forced a steal and drove for a layup to make it 118-116 with 1:06 remaining.

The Pacers called a timeout and gave the ball to Oladipo, but his shot didn't fall, leading to Ibaka's go-ahead 3 at the other end.

Oladipo missed a 3 with 10 seconds to play, and VanVleet stripped Brogdon to seal a historic win for Toronto.

The Raptors led 30-20 after one, but Indiana scored 43 points in the second to lead 63-48 at halftime.

Lowry's steal and fast-break basket with 4:02 left in the third capped a 12-0 Raptors run that cut the deficit to 75-69. Lowry scored 11 points in the quarter, but Indiana took an 86-82 lead into the fourth.

Source: Grizzlies agree to deal Iguodala to Heat

Published in Basketball
Wednesday, 05 February 2020 17:50

The Memphis Grizzlies have agreed to a deal to send Andre Iguodala to the Miami Heat, a league source told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Iguodala agreed to the trade, and he has also agreed to a two-year, $30 million extension with Miami, sources said.

Justise Winslow is also part of the package headed to Memphis, sources told Wojnarowski. The forward has played in only 11 games this season because of injuries. He's averaging 11.3 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4 assists.

In addition, Miami, Memphis and the Oklahoma City Thunder are working on an elaborate three-team deal that would land the Heat both Iguodala and Danilo Gallinari, league sources told Wojnarowski. Talks are ongoing and could extend into Thursday, sources said.

In an interview with The Undefeated's Marc J. Spears on Wednesday night, Iguodala said he will take a physical for the Heat on Friday and will need "a couple of days" before he's ready to play.

Iguodala also said he's "really excited" to be joining the Heat and playing with Jimmy Butler.

Iguodala, 36, hasn't played for the Grizzlies this season. Last summer, the Golden State Warriors sent the veteran swingman -- who is making $17.2 million in the final year of his contract -- and a lightly protected 2024 first-round pick to the rebuilding Grizzlies because Golden State needed to shed his salary to execute a three-team, sign-and-trade deal for All-Star guard D'Angelo Russell.

On Monday, with trade speculation swirling around Iguodala, Grizzlies guard Dillon Brooks didn't mince words when asked about the rumors.

"A guy that's on our team doesn't want to be on our team," Brooks said. "I can't wait until we find a way to trade him so we can play him, and I can show him what really Memphis is about."

At least two of Brooks' teammates appeared to agree with the comments.

Star rookie Ja Morant reacted with a shouting emoji on Twitter, and guard De'Anthony Melton posted a shrugging emoji.

Iguodala was a crucial piece of the Warriors' three championships and five consecutive Finals appearances; he is considered one of the league's elite wing defenders and is an excellent passer and threat off the dribble.

He averaged 5.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.2 assists as Golden State's sixth man last regular season. Those averages increased to 9.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists during the playoffs, when Iguodala started the majority of the games.

Sources: Kings ship Dedmon to new-look Hawks

Published in Basketball
Wednesday, 05 February 2020 19:24

The Sacramento Kings are trading center Dewayne Dedmon to the Atlanta Hawks for forward Jabari Parker and center Alex Len, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Zach Lowe.

Sacramento is sending Atlanta a 2020 and a 2021 second-round pick in the deal as well.

Dedmon, 31, is averaging 5.1 points and 4.9 rebounds for the Kings. He signed a three-year, $40 million deal with Sacramento in July, but the season soured quickly, with Dedmon issuing a public trade demand in December.

The move comes a day after Atlanta acquired another center, Clint Capela, from Houston, as part of a four-team, 12-player deal. The Hawks had been determined to acquire a center, and Capela, 25, filled a glaring need for the Hawks. Atlanta is building its roster around All-Star guard Trae Young and forwards John Collins and Kevin Huerter, and Capela brings an accomplished, mature, team-first player into the organization. Dedmon can provide depth behind him.

At the time of Dedmon's demand in Sacramento, he had fallen out of the rotation in his seventh NBA season, but has played more recently because of injuries. The NBA fined him $50,000 for the comments.

"I would like to be traded," Dedmon told the Sacramento Bee on Dec. 29. "I haven't been playing, so I would like to go somewhere where my talents are appreciated."

Of the 34 games he played with the Kings, Dedmon started just 10.

"I'm not the only person struggling with my shot, so if that's a factor, then it's kind of crazy," Dedmon told the newspaper. "If you're not allowed to shoot through your slumps, I don't know how you're supposed to make shots."

Players are prohibited from making public trade demands under the collective bargaining agreement. Anthony Davis was fined $50,000 last season after his agent, Rich Paul, made Davis' desire for a trade from the New Orleans Pelicans public.

Parker, 24, is averaging 15 points and 6 rebounds in his sixth NBA season. He signed a two-year, $13 million deal with the Hawks in the offseason, and has a player option for next season.

The season has been tough on Parker, who last played Jan. 3 in a 109-106 loss to the Celtics. Four days later, Atlanta announced that he underwent a non-surgical procedure on his injured right shoulder. That follows a run of three consecutive missed games in December, because of a right shoulder impingement.

Len, 26, played in 40 games for the Hawks this season, averaging 8.7 points and 5.8 rebounds.

Aaron has college building renamed in his honor

Published in Baseball
Wednesday, 05 February 2020 18:49

ATLANTA -- Dozens of students dressed in blue excitedly welcomed Hank Aaron to their Atlanta college campus Wednesday as the school named a building for the baseball icon on his 86th birthday.

Atlanta Technical College renamed a building for the former Atlanta Braves slugger, christening it the Henry Louis "Hank" Aaron Academic Complex. Aaron, a longtime supporter of the college, donates thousands of dollars to the school every year and his Chasing the Dream Foundation awards scholarships to several students.

As the legend arrived, there was cheering all around. Aaron looked calm and smiled as students, teachers and several big names from baseball honored him on his birthday. Even former President Bill Clinton sent a video message.

"I don't feel like I'm 86," Aaron said, "but I am 86."

Aaron had 755 home runs over a career that ran 1954 to 1976. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982. Now, he serves many roles with the Braves, where he spent most of his playing career.

He also has lobbied for efforts to encourage more young African American athletes to choose baseball.

"I would like to see more blacks in baseball," he said, "and it's just a matter of them going out and playing."

He said Major League Baseball can contribute by making more resources available.

"They can build more baseball fields," he said. "No. 1, they can have more baseball equipment; 2, they can teach coaches in them and learn how to play the game."

British number two Heather Watson writes in her BBC Sport column about preparing to lead Great Britain's Fed Cup team for the match against Slovakia on 7-8 February.

This time last year I was watching the Fed Cup from my bed - it was a really bad experience for me.

It was such a shame - after playing Fed Cup for all those years I had never been part of a home tie. And then we were finally at home in Bath but I was literally bed-bound for the whole week with illness, even afterwards as well.

I was live-streaming all the girls' matches every day, they just did so well. Then in April I was part of the team that won the tie against Kazakhstan at the Copper Box in London, and that was an amazing experience.

A year on from Bath, I am coming into this week's tie against Slovakia feeling really happy. It will be my 32nd tie and if we win, we will get through to April's first ever Fed Cup Finals in Budapest.

This time round I am playing as the number one player for Great Britain because Johanna Konta won't be there. I've played number one before a few times so it doesn't feel too different, and I'm just really excited about the matches this week.

I know the girls in the team really well. We're all equal and we're good friends, so being number one doesn't make it any different in that sense.

Jo is a really good friend of mine so I was sad when she said she wasn't playing this year but I totally understand her reasons. From a selfish perspective I would have loved her here but all the other girls are great and there's a brilliant atmosphere in the group.

Since August-September last year I have been playing some really good tennis, I've just been consistent with my results and have been climbing the rankings again. I'm really happy and I'm really enjoying my tennis and I think it is really showing.

I'm 74 in the world at the moment and I'm feeling super confident. I've had a lot of matches this year - including reaching the semi-finals in Hobart last month - and on the practice court I am hitting the ball well.

I feel like I'm on a good run and I hope I can carry it into our matches on Friday and Saturday.

Jet lag, lost bags and temperature drops

As a professional tennis player you do a lot of travelling and are away from home a lot, but that's one of the sacrifices you have to make.

I've just come back from Melbourne, which is 12 hours ahead of Bratislava where I am now. The jet lag hasn't been too bad though. In fact, when I come back from Australia I am always super tired at night and I wake up fresh as a daisy in the morning because I've had an early night.

It was nearly 40 degrees in Melbourne and now I'm in around eight degrees here, but even that is fine.

We are just so used to it, we bring all the right clothes and we've got a really good support team here from the LTA, who do a brilliant job on the physio, strength and conditioning and medical side of things, so we know we're going to be in the best possible shape for the matches.

I didn't lose any luggage this time round but it has happened to me quite a few times where my bags haven't arrived.

One year I flew to Australia, they lost my bag and I had to borrow my friend's clothes for the next two days. Luckily, it was just over Christmas so I just had those two days off and didn't need to find any tennis clothes. They've never lost my racquets which is lucky, it's always just my case.

Apart from the time zone and the temperature, we've also had to get used to playing on a clay court instead of a hard court, which is what we were playing on in Australia.

It's hard to adjust in a short space of time but it's the same for everyone and I'm sure the matches will be really tight come the weekend.

We hit on clay a few times in London before we got here which was a good start, but the clay is different here. The court is really nice, I like it more, so that's a good thing.

Team spirit and Craig David

There's a good team spirit naturally within the group but we do also play games in Fed Cup weeks to keep everyone laughing in the team room.

This morning we filmed a feature for LTA's social media channels where we were shown some old social media posts and we had to guess which player had posted them.

There were some shockers in there so it was really funny - apparently you could hear us laughing from next door! The best one was a picture Annie K posted from when she met Craig David a few years ago. It was very corny, so we knew it was her.

We all have a good time on the court during practice as well - the warm-ups are always good fun and get people going well. Anne has been really positive and she's been motivating us all week, so everyone's feeling good and looking forward to getting started.

We always get great support at Fed Cup both in the arenas and at home, so I'm sure we'll get that again and hopefully we can give you all something to shout about.

Six Nations 2020: Wales call up Dewi Lake and Taine Basham

Published in Rugby
Wednesday, 05 February 2020 06:09

Wales have added hooker Dewi Lake and back-rower Taine Basham to their Six Nations squad.

The former Wales Under-20 pair have been training with the squad and have now been formally called up.

This is a first senior call-up for 20-year-old Osprey Lake, while the Dragons' Basham, also 20, was in the Wales squad for last November's uncapped match against Barbarians.

No players have been released from the squad, the Welsh Rugby Union confirmed.

Wales are scheduled to name their team to face Ireland on Thursday, 6 February at 11:00 GMT.

Lake has made two appearances as an Ospreys replacement this season, one in the Heineken Champions Cup and the other in the Pro14.

Basham has made 29 appearances for the Dragons over three seasons.

In his latest BBC Sport column, Wales centre Hadleigh Parkes discusses try-scoring machine Josh Adams, the new caps' success against Italy and attempting to beat Ireland in Dublin.

What an opening Six Nations weekend. You don't get many starts like that. Five tries, a bonus-point win and the keeping of a good Italian side pointless.

One of the pleasing aspects was the manner of the tries, especially those off set-piece.

It is a good step in the style we want to play going forward and there was no better example of that than the glorious pass from Dan Biggar between his legs for Josh Adams' second try.

I was slightly surprised and am not sure where it came from. Dan was getting a bit of stick from the boys, but he takes it pretty well and gives as good as he gets.

He has backed himself to do that and it has come off, so good on him, and it was another smart finish by Josh.

Awesome Adams

It is such a positive when you have a world-class finisher in your side. Just like a top football team with a lethal striker, it is heartening to know you have someone like that at your disposal.

He is not only scoring tries, but scoring hard tries as well. You want your wingers to finish well, but defensively he is going well and has a huge work-rate in attack and is a threat all over the park.

He is coming off his wing and making dents and that is what you want from players who are in form. The boys are enjoying watching and playing with him.

It is nice knowing if you give him half an opportunity there is a good chance he will come away with a try, or a good break that could lead to a try.

It is about him trying to get his hands on the ball as much as possible and our job as midfielders is to give our wingers as much space as possible to do what they are good at.

Saturday was also a special moment for Johnny McNicholl, the other wing, as he won his first cap.

His wife and daughter were watching at the stadium with my wife and daughter and I am told they were extremely excited.

His daughter was loving the crowd. It was awesome because we got down on to the pitch with our wives and kids after the game and had a little run around.

It was great for him and his family to have that. Those moments, which people don't always see, are so special. To get a win on your first cap was also great and I am really stoked for him.

Centre conundrum

Nick Tompkins was the other new cap and he managed to score a superb try on his debut after coming on as a replacement.

I played against him a couple of times with Saracens, but the first time I met him was in here at the Wales camp and he seems like a lovely bloke. He is a lot of fun, a bit of a character, and he came on and played extremely well.

I know he had a lot family and friends in Cardiff as well. To get a try on your debut is pretty special and he performed his role extremely well.

It just shows how much competition there is for places now with Nick and George North putting their hands up for selection and Owen Watkin coming back from injury.

You want internal competition because it pushes you. Not just at centre, but throughout the squad.

It puts pressure on you to perform not only on the playing park but also the training ground. I would like to think if somebody is pushing you that you are also helping them as well.

We all want Wales to do well and be successful and whoever takes the field, that is the main goal.

We want to be a successful side and whether you are playing a supporting role or starting, it doesn't matter. You just want a good team environment to succeed.

Mixed memories

Whoever is picked in the Welsh midfield against Ireland will be up against Bundee Aki and Robbie Henshaw, with Garry Ringrose missing out through injury.

Regular readers of this column will know that Bundee is a guy I go way back with, to battles we have had at New Zealand provincial level, Super Rugby and in the Pro14 with the Scarlets against Connacht.

Bundee and Robbie are both powerful boys who run hard and straight and have good skill sets as well. They are key to getting Ireland on the front foot and are good defensively.

Ireland also have big forwards who give them go forward. The half-backs ensure they have a strong kicking game, which will put you under the pump.

So they are a well-drilled side with class players across the park and will be better for their hard-fought win over Scotland.

It is going to be a different story for us going over there and trying to get a result at a stadium I have mixed memories of.

In 2017, Scarlets won the Pro12 final against Munster which was a culmination of a great end to that season.

The following year we lost to Leinster twice, in the Pro14 final and Champions Cup semi-final, and Wales lost to Ireland in the Six Nations.

I am told that is the last time we lost in the Six Nations - and that Wales have had not had a victory in this tournament there since 2012.

It is a cool stadium and Dublin is an awesome city to visit and has a good party atmosphere.

Hopefully on Saturday both sides can put on a performance supporters can be proud of, with Wales celebrating at the end.
