Published in Racing
Wednesday, 05 February 2020 14:59

BROWNSBURG, Ind. – Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing officials have announced a partnership with Advance Auto Parts that covers both of its sprint car entries.

With the goal of increasing its awareness as a provider of quality parts, service and solutions to the ever-growing grass roots racing community, Advance and its family of brands – including Advance Professional, Carquest and TechNet Professional Automotive Service – will be primary partners for TSR this season.

The Advance colors will be carried by 10-time World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion Donny Schatz, as well as Tony Stewart Racing team owner Tony Stewart.

“We’re excited to continue our sponsorship with Tony Stewart and TSR,” said Michael Cooper, Senior Vice President, Professional Sales, Advance Auto Parts. “Tony Stewart and TSR are synonymous with winning and we are committed to supporting this team and look forward to a successful partnership on and off the track.”

Advance Professional, a secondary partner of TSR during much of the 2019 season, will now have primary placement on the familiar No. 15 piloted by Schatz.

With plans to alternate the family of brands connected to Advance, Schatz will also represent Carquest, a network of more than 1,200 retail stores operated by independent partners servicing professional, and DIY customer and Technet, a group of elite, locally-owned shops, on an occasional basis during the season.

Schatz will carry Advance Professional during the DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla., Feb. 7-9.

In addition to World of Outlaws success, the Fargo, N.D., native is a former DIRTcar Nationals champion, including winning four of five races to claim the overall title in 2018.

“I’m very proud to be carrying the Advance Professional, Carquest, TechNet and Advance Auto Parts colors this year,” said Schatz. “The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Sprint Car Series touches many regions of our country each season and we’re proud to have the opportunity to showcase the Advance family of brands to our fans.

“These are iconic automotive brands and we’re looking forward to being part of the next chapter of their motorsports history.”

Stewart, who competed in 65 sprint car events in 2019 while accumulating 10 victories across 360c.i. and 410c.i. competition, will carry Advance Auto Parts as his primary partner during the upcoming season.

“We’re very proud to become a part of the motorsports initiatives of the Advance Professional, Carquest, TechNet and Advance Auto Parts brands,” said Stewart. “These brands have a long and storied history of success and as the audience of sprint car racing continues to evolve, we hope to aid the Advance group in writing a new chapter in marketing and consumer reach.

“This season marks the start of a new decade and Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing’s third in the sport of sprint car racing,” Stewart added. “We’re excited to begin working with everyone within the Advance family and help give sprint car racing fans a new brand to explore and utilize.”

Gorlinsky Survives To Win eNASCAR iRacing Clash

Published in Racing
Wednesday, 05 February 2020 19:49

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – In one of the wildest finishes in the history of the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series, John Gorlinsky stole an improbable victory in the Coca-Cola Clash on Wednesday night at the virtual Daytona Int’l Speedway.

After taking the white flag in 16th place, Gorlinsky somehow weaved his way through a multi-car crash on the final lap that – quite literally – involved the entire 38-car field at the end of the backstretch.

Gorlinsky slapped the outside wall twice as he was hit by other spinning cars, but kept his foot in the throttle and powered back around to the finish line to become the fourth different Clash winner in the last four years.

It was a finish reminiscent of the 2012 NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Daytona, where James Buescher was 11th with a half-lap to go and snaked his way to a victory after the top eight crashed in turn three on the final lap and chaos ensued.

Speaking after the checkered flag, Gorlinsky shook his head and admitted that “I never thought I’d be passing from 16th to first going into turn three like that; obviously, that was pure luck.”

The luck emerged halfway down the backstretch, after Malik Ray got into the outside wall at the same moment contact between Casey Kirwan and four-time series champion Ray Alfalla shot Alfalla down the track into Garrett Lowe and Bob Bryant.

The contact between Alfalla and Bryant sent Bryant up into Blake Reynolds’ path, hooking Reynolds back down the track into the right-rear fender of then-leader Kollin Keister’s Roush Fenway Racing Ford.

Keister, loose at that point, then shot up into the JR Motorsports Chevrolet of Michael Conti and sent Conti into the wall – leaving carnage behind and everyone wondering who would come through the smoke to reign victorious.

Gorlinsky, who had already slapped the wall once at that point, was coming into turn four at near-full speed and shot a narrow gap between Conti’s crashing machine and the outside wall, slapping the SAFER Barrier but making it through to win with a bruised and battered No. 97 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.

“I did the equivalent of closing my eyes and doing what I could to get through that, and somehow, I managed to pinball correctly off of everybody and get the job done,” Gorlinsky added. “That was tons of fun, though. When you’ve been away from it for a while like I was, you forget how competitive this field was, but you realize it really quickly when you’re out there in a pack at Daytona and everyone is running basically the same speed. It’s chaotic.

“I made a mistake early on and shuffled myself to the back just to catch my breath and regroup … but on that last lap, you know the next flag is going to end it and you’ve got to go,” he noted. “I saw them starting to dice up down the backstretch and chose the line I thought I was going to need to get through that. I still can’t believe the way the whole thing shook out, but it’s a cool deal to win one again.”

Christian Challiner came through the carnage to finish second in a JTG-Daugherty Racing Chevrolet, followed by Logan Clampitt’s Burton-Kligerman eSports Toyota in third.

Defending series champion Zack Novak, representing Richmond Raceway eSports, and Virtual Racing School’s Bobby Zalenski completed the top five.

Steve Sheehan finished sixth, ahead of Caine Cook, Alex McCollum, Jimmy Mullis and polesitter Nick Ottinger, Gorlinsky’s teammate who led a race-high 27 laps, filled the remainder of the top 10.

Keister, who led at the white flag, could not limp around to the checkered flag and was scored 35th.

Until the last-lap carnage, the race ran caution-free, with three-wide racing throughout the pack and one pit cycle from laps 33 to 36. The race featured 21 lead changes among nine different drivers.

The point season for the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series begins Feb. 11, back at the virtual Daytona Int’l Speedway.

Flames' top defenseman Giordano sent for MRI

Published in Hockey
Wednesday, 05 February 2020 15:41

Calgary Flames defenseman Mark Giordano, the reigning Norris Trophy winner, missed practice Wednesday to undergo an MRI, the team announced.

Giordano, the Flames' captain, sustained a lower-body injury in Tuesday's 3-1 loss to the San Jose Sharks. He left the game in the second period, after attempting a one-time shot that stretched his legs awkwardly as he fell to the ice.

Interim coach Geoff Ward said after practice the team was awaiting results of the MRI. Without Giordano, Calgary practiced with T.J. Brodie and Travis Hamonic as the top defensive pairing as it prepared to host the Nashville Predators on Thursday.

"He's good defensively, he's physical, he blocks shots," Brodie said of Giordano. "And offensively, everyone knows what he can do. He's just an all-around great player."

Giordano, 36, is in his 13th season in the NHL. He has five goals and 27 points for the Flames, but his true worth is on Calgary's back line, where he leads the team with an average of 23 minutes, 57 seconds on ice per game. He has 143 shots on net, most of them slap shots from the point.

"One of two things usually happens. You can come together as a group. Or the other way is to let it affect you in a negative way. So, we have a decision to make, obviously," Ward said. "But we're confident the guys in the lineup are capable of stepping up."

Giordano's career season was 2018-19, when he became the first Flame in franchise history to win the Norris as the league's best defenseman. He was also just the fourth player 35 or older to win the award, after finishing second among NHL players at his position with 74 points.

"Every team has to go through injuries," center Derek Ryan said. "If there is a time that he's going to be out of the lineup, that just means more opportunities for other guys to pick it up."

The Flames, who raced to the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference last season, are right at the cutoff line for the playoffs this season. As play began Wednesday, they were in the No. 2 wild-card slot, with 60 points.

Maple Leafs acquire Campbell, Clifford from Kings

Published in Hockey
Wednesday, 05 February 2020 20:32

The Toronto Maple Leafs couldn't wait any longer to solidify their goaltending.

After two poor performances from backup goalie Michael Hutchinson, the Leafs announced Wednesday that they have acquired goaltender Jack Campbell and forward Kyle Clifford from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for forward Trevor Moore, the Columbus Blue Jackets' third-round pick in the 2020 NHL draft and a conditional third-round pick in 2021.

Campbell is 8-10-2 with a .900 save percentage and a 2.85 goals-against average. Clifford has six goals and eight assists in 53 games. Moore had two goals and three assists in 26 games for Toronto.

Clifford, 29, is a gritty forward who played on the Kings' 2012 and 2014 Stanley Cup championship teams. He's an unrestricted free agent this summer, and the Kings are picking up 50% of his $1.6 million cap hit to make the deal work.

Campbell makes $675,000 against the salary cap this season, but he signed a two-year contract extension last September worth $1.65 million against the cap through 2022.

The Leafs are 28-19-7 for 63 points, two points out of the final wild-card spot and one point behind the Florida Panthers for third place in the Atlantic Division. But they lost starting goaltender Freddie Andersen for an undetermined amount of time with a neck injury suffered in a loss to the Florida Panthers on Feb. 3. Hutchinson took over in that game and gave up three goals on 13 shots, before giving up four goals on 35 shots in a loss to the Rangers on Wednesday night.

This is actually the second time Toronto general manager Kyle Dubas has traded for Campbell. He dealt for the goalie in 2011 while serving as general manager of the Soo Greyhounds junior hockey team.

The Jackets' third-round pick in the deal was previously acquired from Ottawa in July 2019.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Dustin Johnson is leaving little doubt he’s focused on reasserting himself as a factor on the game’s biggest stages after coming back from knee surgery late last year.

He let media know just how much he’s avoiding cluttering his mind with distractions when he was asked Wednesday for his reaction to the release of the USGA and R&A’s Distance Insights Project.

He was brutally and comically honest.

“I saw the e-mail, and then I looked at how long it was, and I did not read it,” he said. “It was like 18 pages or something, and I said, 'Yeah.’ I didn't even try to read it.”

Johnson’s painful finish to 2019 wasn’t so funny. He missed the final three months while recovering from arthroscopic surgery to repair cartilage damage in his left knee. After a second-place finish at the PGA Championship in May, he didn’t have another top-10 finish the rest of the year.

“I blame it on my knee hurting,” Johnson said.

Johnson said the knee no longer hurts, but he can feel the repair when his left leg braces hard, as it does when he’s hitting a shot off an uphill lie. He said even though there’s no pain, his brain tells him to ease off.

“It’s just with awkward stances,” he said.

From Dustin Johnson’s return to Jason Day’s swoon, here are the burning topics ahead of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Johnson is working through that nicely, with a T-7 finish in his 2020 debut at the Sentry Tournament of Champions and his second-place finish at the Saudi International last week.

With Wayne Gretzky back as his playing partner this week, Johnson is eager to add to his success at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He won in 2009 and ‘10. In 12 starts in the event, he has eight top-10 finishes, with five finishes of third or better.

“It's one of my favorite events we play all year,” Johnson said. “I like all the golf courses. This year, they're probably in the best shape I've ever seen them. It looks like we're going to have a little bit better weather than last year, so that's a plus.

“I enjoy playing here, got a good partner, so we have a good time.”

Despite that knee injury and swoon in the second half last year, Johnson is still No. 5 in the world. He’ll be looking to make a move back toward the No. 1 ranking. In five different stays, he has held the top spot for 91 total weeks.

Haris Rauf could be the man to end the Stars' losing streak

Published in Cricket
Wednesday, 05 February 2020 18:51

February 6: BBL Challenger - Melbourne Stars v Sydney Thunder, Melbourne

Our XI: Peter Handscomb, Alex Hales, Callum Ferguson, Usman Khawaja, Marcus Stoinis, Daniel Sams, Chris Morris, Glenn Maxwell, Haris Rauf, Adam Zampa, Jonathan Cook

Captain: Alex Hales

Four fifties and a 47 in his last five BBL games makes Hales the most in-form player going around and an easy choice for captain coming into the game.

Vice-captain: Haris Rauf

Haris Rauf could write a love letter to the MCG when he retires. His hat-trick in the league stage was instrumental in beating the Thunder, and his strike rate this season is the best among bowlers who have bowled at least 25 overs. Need someone special to get your team out of a four-game losing streak? Rauf might be the man.

Hot picks

Marcus Stoinis: Three games without a significant knock, and Stoinis - the leading scorer this season - will have to step up and make things happen for the Stars. He's still value for your money and he smashed a fifty the first time the two teams met this season, so don't ignore him.

Daniel Sams: Thirty wickets in the season at an average of 14.00 is no joke. With a three-for in the last game, Sams comes into the game full of confidence and by looking at the Stars' last two batting collapses (98 and 115), Sams could even be your captain or vice-captain. And he can bat too.

Callum Ferguson: Cometh the crunch game, and you'd back Ferguson to come good. He's not been hot of late, without a 50 in his last ten innings, but he's still only behind Hales on the Thunder's leading run-scorers' list. His big-match experience also cannot be ignored.

Value picks

Jonathan Cook: He was outstanding in the knockout game against the Adelaide Strikers, returning 2 for 16 in his four overs, and was the star of the show against the Hobart Hurricanes in the Eliminator with 4 for 21 in his four overs.

Peter Handscomb: The Stars are searching for their batting heroes with Stoinis and Maxwell not showing up recently, and Handscomb, who has been batting at No. 4, might have a significant role to play in the game.

Point to note

The teams batting first have won the last two games here with the Stars collapsing in the chase both times. So, if the Thunder bat first, you can pick a captain from them and consider Sams as vice-captain. The average first-innings score at the MCG in six matches played in 2020 is 162, so if the batsmen get a good start, expect a high-ish scoring game.

Bangladesh's bowling gives Pakistan the edge

Published in Cricket
Wednesday, 05 February 2020 20:02

Big picture

Bangladesh and Pakistan meet each other for their first Test in five years at a time when both teams are at a crossroads. Bangladesh have had a woeful 2019 and are desperate to start off the new year with an improved performance. Pakistan, on the other hand, have just broken through by playing their first Test at home since 2009, and are also looking to establish themselves for the rest of 2020.

Their 263-run win over Sri Lanka in their last Test in December saw plenty of individual performances among batsmen and bowlers. Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Abbas and Naseem Shah all picked up wickets while there were hundreds for Shan Masood, Abid Ali, captain Azhar Ali and Babar Azam. It also involved a major fightback, which would be the most appeasing factor for Misbah-ul-Haq who is also trying to settle on his dual role of team coach and chief selector.

Pakistan's bowling attack is their strength, led by the steady and accurate Abbas who opens the bowling with Afridi. Naseem brings extra pace and Yasir Shah adds more experience to the bowling attack, and will be especially handy on a pitch which may be batting-friendly for most of the Test match.

Bangladesh also don't have a great record against legspin, which is just one of their many problems. They lost each of the five Tests they played in 2019. They are without two of their best cricketers on this tour. And they have to operate with the worst pace bowling attack in recent memory.

And yet, all of this could still an opportunity. Tamim Iqbal has returned to the Test side, and having scored a record-breaking triple-hundred in a first-class game last week, he will bring experience and confidence to the Bangladesh top-order. And sure, they are without Mushfiqur Rahim who held the middle order firmly for the last nine years, but that gives Mominul Haque, in his second series as Test captain, a chance to make a statement about his leadership quality. It is also also a chance for Mohammad Mithun, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Liton Das to cement their spot.

While there are opportunities available for the batsmen, Bangladesh's biggest concern is their bowling attack. Taijul Islam is their most skilled bowler, while Abu Jayed offers a bit of control. Ebadot Hossain has often blown hot and cold, but is said to be improving since the BPL and to round off, the team management is likely to pick Rubel Hossain, who has the all-time worst bowling average for anyone who has bowled more than 3,000 balls in Tests, for his first game in 18 months.

Bangladesh will be very eager to make the right turn at this crossroads.

Form guide

Pakistan WDLLL (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Bangladesh LLLLL

In the spotlight

Abid Ali easily qualifies for one of the best debuts of 2019, having struck two centuries in his first three Test innings. Both those knocks were against Sri Lanka in Pakistan's last series, where he batted so sensibly to get his Test career off to a superb start. Now, however, there will be added expectation on the newcomer, which is only natural in a player's second series.

Mominul Haque had a baptism of fire in India where he made his captaincy debut. He made only 44 runs in four innings, including his first pair, in the Kolkata Test. But with the wretched 2019 over, Mominul has a chance to make a fresh start as he looks to salvage a Test side also lacking in form.

Team news

Pakistan have plenty of options in their bowling line-up after they included offspinner Bilal Asif and allrounder Faheem Ashraf but they probably won't be tempted to change a winning combination.

Pakistan (likely): 1 Shan Masood, 2 Abid Ali, 3 Azhar Ali (capt), 4 Babar Azam, 5 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 6 Haris Sohail, 7 Asad Shafiq, 8 Yasir Shah, 9 Mohammad Abbas, 10 Naseem Shah, 11 Shaheen Afridi

Bangladesh coach Russell Domingo revealed his top seven in the departure press conference in Dhaka. Depending on how they view the Rawalpindi pitch on the day before the Test, they would either go for a three-man pace attack, or both spinners - Taijul and Nayeem Hassan.

Bangladesh (likely): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Saif Hassan, 3 Najmul Hossain Shanto, 4 Mominul Haque (capt), 5 Mohammad Mithun, 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Liton Das (wk), 8 Taijul Islam, 9 Rubel Hossain, 10 Abu Jayed, 11 Ebadot Hossain

Pitch and conditions

The forecast for these five days is better than December when most of the Pakistan-Sri Lanka game was washed out. The pitch is likely to favour the batsmen although Bangladesh are anticipating a lot more bounce than they get at home.

Stats and Trivia

  • Pakistan have not won a Test in Rawalpindi for 23 years, having lost three of the last four to Australia (1998), Sri Lanka (2000) and India (2004).

  • The last Test match between Bangladesh and Pakistan in Pakistan took place more than 16 years ago and it was a heart-breaker for Bangladesh. Inzamam-ul-Haq maneuvered the home side to a one-wicket win in Multan.

Ellyse Perry expects pace to be key at T20 World Cup

Published in Cricket
Wednesday, 05 February 2020 20:07

Australia allrounder Ellyse Perry believes pace bowling could play a huge part in the T20 World Cup after she and Tayla Vlaeminck ripped through India's middle order last weekend.

The pair took 7 for 26 between them in eight overs at Manuka Oval, including five wickets in 10 balls, to help set up a four-wicket win.

Vlaeminck touched speeds of 120kph and bounced out both Jemimah Rodrigues and Arundhati Reddy while Perry's extra bounce forced three catches to be sliced behind square on the off side.

A large number of matches could be played on quicker pitches than some of the regular women's international and WBBL venues including the WACA, Manuka Oval, the SCG, and MCG.

"I think fast bowling in general, if you look at the trend across the WBBL earlier this season, it's almost come back into vogue a little bit in a sense," Perry said.

"I think maybe the last couple of years, spin's been a little bit more dominant from a bowling point of view but certainly later in the summer, the wickets are a little bit harder, they've probably had a bit more time so they've got a bit more carry and bounce, and if you look at Tayla Vlaeminck's performance last weekend in Canberra, she's got incredible x-factor on Australian wickets and that was really crucial for us in that second game against India. So I think across the board, fast bowling is going to play a big role in this world cup which is really exciting."

Perry bowled superbly in eight of the nine overs she delivered last weekend taking 1 for 9 against England and 4 for 13 against India but did suffer some punishment at the hands of England's Heather Knight in the Super Over on Saturday where she conceded 10 in four balls defending just eight.

Perry said Australia's loss in the opening game was the perfect preparation for what is to come. "You certainly want to have those kinds of moments leading into a tournament rather than when you're in them," she said.

"But a big part of that is just the habit of winning and making sure that, whatever circumstances you face, because every game is going to be different, every [set of] conditions are going to be different, oppositions are different, so it's really about just having that knack of finding a way to win.

"We've had some really good chats around that over the last couple of days, just making sure that we're able to adapt quickly to whatever is thrown at us and also I think you're always better for a few games. It's nice to be back together. We haven't played together for quite a while. So, all in all, I think it's brilliant preparation for us."

Australia face India and England again at the Junction Oval in Melbourne on Saturday and Sunday and two wins would guarantee a spot in Wednesday's tri-series final.

Australia skipper Meg Lanning is expected to return after missing the England Super Over and the India game in Canberra due to a back issue.

Perry said the batting group has had some honest discussions this week after disappointing showings in the first two matches of the series.

"I think it's probably just a little bit around decision-making and also taking the game on at the right time and the right circumstances. I think we were maybe a little bit timid in some ways. It's funny when you come back together with a group you haven't played with for a while, just finding your place again and the roles that you've got to play in that order, and we're really fortunate to have great depth in our batting line up and it was wonderful to see Annabel Sutherland do as well as she did.

"But at the same time, I think you've still got to take ownership at the top and we probably didn't do that well over the weekend. Certainly, at the Junction Oval, which is a wonderful place to bat, it's a good opportunity for us all to do a little bit better this weekend."
