Titans' Derrick Henry throws unexpected jump TD pass

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 11 January 2020 19:32

BALTIMORE -- Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith dialed up a perfect play to trick the Baltimore Ravens and score a touchdown. The play resulted in a touchdown pass from running back Derrick Henry to receiver Corey Davis.

Smith had backup QB Marcus Mariota trot onto the field and line up in shotgun. Mariota motioned out wide and Henry lined up as a Wildcat QB. Henry took the snap and executed a perfect jump pass to hit Davis for the score.

The touchdown came three plays after Henry ripped off a 66-yard run through the middle of Baltimore's defense.

McCann Racing’s Midwesterners Ready For IMSA Debut

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – It’s not uncommon for recent high school or college graduates to take an off-year after completing their studies to travel or wind down.

For Michael McCann Jr. – a recent graduate of Ohio University – he wanted to go sports car racing.

“When I graduated, I had full anticipation of accepting a job at an IT company in Columbus,” said McCann, who graduated with a degree in Science and Management Information Systems. “A couple of days before Christmas, my dad came to me. My dad and I always had a mutual agreement with racing where, you know, keep your nose clean, stay out of trouble, get good grades, do well in school.

“He said that now is the time to go racing if you want to go racing. I told him that I don’t want to look back in 10 years and be like, ‘I wish I would’ve taken that opportunity.’ I held off on the corporate life, and I started doing this, and I instantly fell in love with it.”

McCann Racing joins the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge paddock in the No. 8 Audi R8 GT4. McCann – son of the former GT racer with the same moniker – will be sharing driving duties with a fellow Midwesterner, Britt Casey Jr.

Hailing from Illinois, Casey returns full time to the series after his championship-winning season in TCR in 2018. He completed a partial season in 2019, which yielded two pole positions, one win and two additional podium finishes in just four starts.

“It’s rewarding to be back in the paddock full time after a successful, but partial, season last year being in an Audi RS3 TCR car again,” said Casey. “We still found a lot of successes, but the move up to GS, I think, is something Audi wanted to see in terms of a ladder progression, as one of the Audi customer racing offerings of TCR, GT4 and GT3 and GT2 machinery. I know they’re excited about that. McCann has long been an Audi team as well, and it was a good fit.”

It can’t be argued that the program as a whole is a good fit. Nearly all of the crew is Midwest-based, and Casey himself is nearing his college graduation from Ohio’s Miami University.

“It’s a Midwest team,” said Casey. “Pretty much everyone on the team is from the Midwest, so we all get along in the same way and laugh at the same jokes. A lot of mutual friends and a lot of mutual experiences that we can all relate to. It’s fun. It’s is a cool team to be on because everyone is cool people.”

His co-driver – who he met in World Challenge last year – echoed the same sentiments.

“The first thing with bringing other people in is that you just hope they get along,” said McCann. “The first night (at the Roar Before the Rolex 24), we’re all working together and we go out to dinner and it was perfect. It was like a happy marriage. Everything is going well so far, I can’t complain. Having Britt as a teammate, that’s huge for me. When we were teammates for one race last year, we just kicked things off.”

The duo is hoping to kick off the 2020 Pilot Challenge season with a bang. Although they’re new to the grid, they’re not necessarily lagging behind the veteran teams.

“There are little things that new teams don’t think about, but we have a lot of guys that have previous experience with IMSA like myself that are on the team,” said Casey. “We all know the little elements that go into a championship that may be a new team doesn’t think about. Our goal is to be upfront every single race as much as we can.

“We’re expecting to do well, not in a big-headed manner, but with a calculated approach. We have already started to recognize the little things we need to do to make sure we’re taken as an established team, rather than a first-year team in IMSA because it’s not going to be that way.”

ARCA Testing Concludes At Daytona

Saturday, 11 January 2020 16:27

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Dominique Van Wieringen led the way in the final day of testing for the ARCA Menards Series at Daytona Int’l Speedway on Saturday afternoon.

The two-day test session, leading into the Feb. 8 Lucas Oil 200 Driven by General Tire, was plagued by overnight rain showers that delayed the start of testing each day, but the teams on hand were able to get nearly 15 hours of track time over the course of both days.

Van Wieringen, who has a career-best third place finish in the ARCA Menards Series East at Langley Speedway, piloted the No. 30 Rette Jones Racing Ford to a fast lap at 49.615 seconds at 181.397 mph. Van Wieringen’s fast lap also marks the second consecutive season a female driver led the way in a test session at Daytona as now-retired Leilani Munter led the first day of the open test last year.

“I was really surprised when Mark (Rette) said we went to the top of the charts,” Van Wieringen said. “I was practicing trying to time the draft for qualifying and I didn’t get it times just right. Hopefully when we come back for the race I can time it out a little better in qualifying and get even more.

“It’s been a good experience. It’s really intimidating because you go really fast and when things go wrong they go wrong really fast. For the first time out, it was better than I thought it would be. It was actually really relaxing. I don’t know how to explain it, it was just really relaxing.”

World of Outlaws star David Gravel, driving the No. 28 KBR Development Chevrolet, timed in second fastest at 49.659 seconds at 181.236 mph. Gravel is slated to run a partial season for GMS Racing in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series and will make his first ARCA Menards Series start in the ARCA Menards Series opener at Daytona.

Sean Corr was third fastest. He was followed closely by a trio Venturini Motorsports teammates, last year’s season runner-up and former Daytona winner Michael Self, Drew Dollar and Ryan Repko.

Alabamian Bret Holmes was seventh, the final driver over 181 mph. Riley Herbst, who led Friday morning’s session in the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, was eighth, just in front of the two Chad Bryant Racing teammates Jacob Heafner and Friday’s overall fastest Connor Hall.

Other notables throughout the field included former Talladega winner Gus Dean in 12th, former NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Pro Stock national champion Tanner Gray in 13th, Hailie Deegan in 16th, and Tom Hessert III in 20th.

Two ARCA touring champions, ARCA/CRA Super Series champion Greg Van Alst and ARCA Menards Series East champion Sam Mayer, took part in Saturday’s action, making single-car runs in a car prepared by two-time Daytona winner and 1995 series champion Andy Hillenburg. Van Alst timed in 28th quickest while Mayer was 34th.

Signs of Sid: Crosby practices in full with Pens

Sidney Crosby was a full participant in practice on Saturday in Arizona, as the Pittsburgh Penguins' captain took a large step toward a return from core muscle surgery.

Crosby, who has largely practiced with a noncontact jersey in his recovery, took part in line rushes Saturday and also worked with the first power-play unit.

"He obviously had another strong day today. We are encouraged by his progress," Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. "We'll take each day as it comes. We'll see how he responds, and we'll make decisions accordingly."

Crosby's mere presence on this three-game road trip to the Western Conference signified that the eight-time All-Star is near his return. Saturday's practice might have advanced the timeline. The Penguins take on the Coyotes on Sunday night before returning to Pittsburgh.

"We're not ruling out anything," Sullivan said.

The Penguins have battled without Crosby, who has missed 27 consecutive games. They are 2-0 on this road trip, and have won six of their past eight. As play began on Saturday, Pittsburgh had the second seed in the Metropolitan Division, with 59 points.

"When he practices, it's amazing the influence he has on our team. The pace of the practice just elevates significantly, and I think that's a credit to how hard he works," Sullivan said. "His practice habits become contagious around our group. I know our guys are excited when he's out there with us.

"He improves our morale."

Perron, Oshie among NHL's final All-Star adds

Saturday, 11 January 2020 16:49

WASHINGTON -- St. Louis Blues winger David Perron and former teammate T.J. Oshie were voted by fans as two of the final representatives for NHL All-Star Weekend in St. Louis.

After helping the Blues win the Stanley Cup last spring in his third stint with them, Perron is having one of the best seasons of his career. The 31-year-old Perron has 19 goals and 26 assists and is a first-time All-Star.

Perron is set to be one of four Blues at All-Star Weekend, joining goaltender Jordan Binnington, reigning playoff MVP Ryan O'Reilly and captain Alex Pietrangelo. The host team launched a significant social media campaign to help get Perron selected.

Oshie has 18 goals and 15 assists for the Washington Capitals. The 33-year-old spent his first seven NHL seasons with the Blues and won the Cup with Washington in 2018.

"We all know he wants to go," Capitals teammate Nicklas Backstrom said of Oshie. "Especially it's his former hometown, too -- St. Louis. That would be something special for him."

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner and Vancouver Canucks defenseman Quinn Hughes were also voted in by fans. The league announced its final All-Stars on Saturday night.

Oshie joins fellow Capitals Braden Holtby and John Carlson and coach Todd Reirden for the Metropolitan Division at All-Star Weekend. Captain Alex Ovechkin opted not to participate and will serve a one-game suspension.

Ovechkin, 34, was once again voted by fans as the Metropolitan captain, but he told reporters on Friday he would rather skip the All-Star festivities and rest his body for the second half of the season.

"Thanks, first of all, fans, for voting me," he said after the Capitals' 2-1 overtime win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. "It's a hard decision, but I have to listen to my body. I have to get ready for the second half of the year. I have to be healthy and focus on different things."

Reirden was supportive of Ovechkin's decision.

"I know it's something that he put a lot of time and thought into," Reirden said. "It's the right thing for him at age 34 to rest and get ready for what he ultimately wants, and that's another run at the Cup. That's what he's playing the game for now."

Boston's David Pastrnak was voted captain for the Atlantic Division, Colorado's Nathan Mackinnon for the Central and Edmonton's Connor McDavid for the Pacific.

NHL All-Star Weekend is Jan. 24-25.

McDowell makes seven consecutive 3s in Saturday 67 at Sony

Graeme McDowell wrote down just one number for seven consecutive holes on Saturday.

McDowell, who started his third round on Waialae Country Club's back nine, went 3-3-3-3-3-3-3 on Nos. 16-4, playing the seven-hole stretch in 6 under par, with four birdies, two pars, and an eagle.

Scorecard for player 18463 during event 18476. Round pinned: 3

Seven straight threes are a PGA Tour career best for the Ulsterman.

Unfortunately, he bookended his stellar stretch with a trio bogeys for to erase half his hard work.

McDowell, who is making just his second start at the Sony after a missed cut back in 2016, finished the round 3 under for the day and the week.

Klopp: Reds points record 'doesn't feel special'

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 11 January 2020 16:25

Liverpool continued to break new ground as they set a Premier League record with a 1-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, but for Jurgen Klopp, whose focus in on the title, it "didn't feel special."

Roberto Firmino's 37th-minute goal proved sufficient for Liverpool to rack up a 20th win in 21 Premier League games and extend their unbeaten league run to a club record 38 games.

They were not even at their best but Liverpool, who have kept six successive clean sheets, have simply forgotten how to lose as they romp towards a first English title since 1989-90.

They are 16 points clear of second-placed Leicester City and their haul of 61 points is two more than the previous Premier League record after 21 games, Manchester City's 59 in 2017-18.

It is also more than any club in Europe's big five league's has managed after 21 games, and the way things are going the title might be wrapped up by Easter.

Yet Klopp was subdued after Saturday's win -- disappointed his side had not dispatched Jose Mourinho's faltering Tottenham side with ease after a dominant first half.

"Our lead is really not interesting. The moment we have so many points that nobody can catch us anymore, that's when I'll be interested," said Klopp, who took over during the 2015-16 season when Liverpool only amassed 60 points.

Klopp said he had been unaware of the new points record until one of his staff told him.

"It doesn't feel somehow special. We know about it and it is special but I can't feel it," he said. "When someone gives you a trophy it is done, but until then you need to fight.

"It is only the start. We need to continue because our contenders are so strong. Pep [Guardiola, Man City boss] will not give up. I will do the same. So far, so really good.

"Today it wasn't our best game but a very good one. In the end it was a proper fight."

For Tottenham manager Mourinho, the initial bounce he induced after replacing Mauricio Pochettino in November has been replaced by a chastening reality that the squad he has inherited has fallen an alarmingly long way since facing Liverpool in last season's Champions League final in Madrid.

His side played admirably in the second half to push Liverpool back and might have snatched a draw had substitute Giovani Lo Celso not wasted a glorious late chance.

But he knows he faces a tough task to provide Champions League football again next season with Tottenham now in eighth place and nine points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

There were some positives, such as a better defensive shape and an encouraging Premier League debut for 20-year-old defender Japhet Tanganga, who can be pleased with the way he coped against Firmino and Mohamed Salah.

The way Tottenham came back in the second half after having only 26% possession in the opening period was also impressive, although his post-match comments may rankle with former boss Pochettino, who instilled a Klopp-like pressing game at Spurs.

"If we try to play the way we did in the last 20 minutes I think we would collapse because the players are not used to play in this style," Mourinho told reporters.

"I think we deserved a point. We're talking about one of the best teams in the world at the maximum of their potential.

"We are a team with the difficulties you know. I think we deserved more."

Patriots QB Brady unfazed by unsettled future

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 11 January 2020 17:38

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who is scheduled to be a free agent on March 18, said Saturday that he isn't putting a timetable on making a decision about his future plans.

"The contract things, a week after the season, I would say these things haven't even started to pick up. It's really not my concern at this point," Brady told host Jim Gray in his weekly interview with Westwood One. "It's been about decompressing and resting my mind a little bit and resting my body and spending time with the people who have supported me over the last six months."

Patriots owner Robert Kraft told Peter King of NBC Sports that his "hope and prayer" is that the 42-year-old Brady either plays for New England or retires.

In his Westwood One interview, Brady once against asserted his plans to play in 2020. And when asked about Kraft's remarks, Brady said, "I love playing football. I love playing for this organization. I really don't know what it looks like moving forward, and I'm just taking it day to day."

"We are a week removed from the end of our season," Brady continued. "There is a lot of time to figure these things out. I don't think any player or team is ready to make any commitments at this point, and I'm sure as the offseason progresses those things will take care of themselves."

Brady had agreed to a revised contract with the Patriots in August, and sources said the sides haven't had any substantial talks about an extension since that time.

In his season-ending news conference, Patriots coach Bill Belichick acknowledged that Brady is an "iconic figure in the organization," before adding that any decision about his future will come in time and involve multiple people. Belichick added that "nobody respects Tom more than I do."

Brady was asked about continued speculation on his future in the Westwood One interview.

"I can only say how I feel, and that's what's the truth to me and what's authentic to me," he said. "And I have no decision that I have made, and there won't be for some considerable time. So I know there is speculation; there always is. That's just part of being in professional sports; that's part of being a professional athlete.

"When people aren't talking about this season, they want to talk about next season, and the reality is that next season is quite a ways away. I have some other things that are happening at this time. Like I said, spending some time with my family, my loved ones and giving them the time they need. And then as people begin to plan for next season, like I said, these things will take care of themselves."

On Wednesday, Brady posted a thank-you message to Patriots fans in which he wrote he has more to prove. He was asked what that might be.

"It's always been proving it to myself and being motivated internally to push myself to the limits. Sometimes the limits push back. I've experienced that," he said in the radio interview. "But I also think I'm inspired by so many people who push the limits. I love watching documentaries of incredible human feats. They're inspiring. People climb these mountains and do things that people never thought were possible. I'm at a certain point in my career where people think what I'm doing is to a degree impossible.

"For me, it's about continuing to prove to myself that I can lay it on the line and we can still try to achieve the ultimate goal, which is winning Super Bowls."

Bill Cowher elected to HOF's centennial class

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 11 January 2020 17:25

Former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher was formally named the first member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame's centennial class on Saturday, when the Hall's president, David Baker, informed Cowher of his selection to be enshrined during CBS' "NFL Today" program.

The Hall's centennial class was selected by a blue-ribbon panel this past week. The remainder of the 15-member class will be revealed Wednesday morning.

Cowher, a Crafton, Pennsylvania, native who coached the Steelers for 15 seasons, was visibly moved by the announcement.

"Just thinking about the Pittsburgh franchise and Dan Rooney when he hired me," Cowher said, before joking, "my first goal was just not to get fired before my 20th high school reunion.''

The centennial class, when revealed, will include 10 seniors, three contributors and two coaches -- one of whom is Cowher.

"Congratulations to Bill Cowher on his election into the Pro Football Hall of Fame," Steelers president Art Rooney II said in a statement. "One of our most successful coaches in team history, Bill's energy and dedication for coaching was evident in every practice and every game.

"His Pittsburgh roots were perfect for our organization because he knew the history and passion of our fans, and he wanted to bring a Super Bowl back to his hometown. He accomplished that feat in dramatic fashion in Super Bowl XL."

Steelers great and Hall of Famer Jerome Bettis congratulated Cowher in a tweet, calling him "my coach in Pittsburgh and now my forever coach in Canton."

The centennial class was chosen as part of the NFL's 100th anniversary, and the formal enshrinement for the class will be in September in Canton, Ohio.

The blue-ribbon panel -- which included members of the Hall's board of selectors, league historians, Hall of Famers and Patriots coach Bill Belichick -- chose the centennial class from a list of 38 finalists during a meeting at the Hall of Fame this past Wednesday.

The 38 finalists were chosen from a list of almost 300 nominees over the course of the past five months.

The Hall of Fame's Class of 2020 will be selected Feb. 1 in Miami Beach, Florida, the day before Super Bowl LIV, and the five who are selected will be enshrined at the Hall in August.

Cowher succeeded Hall of Famer Chuck Noll as Steelers coach in 1992. At the time, the then-35 year-old was the youngest head coach in the league as he went on to lead the Steelers to 11 wins in his first season. And by the time he stepped down in 2006, he had accumulated 149 regular-season wins, 12 playoff wins, nine seasons with at least 10 wins, 10 playoff seasons and a Super Bowl win.

Cowher had just three seasons with a losing record, and his win total ranks 20th all time.

Williams: 'Fire me' after Clemson's 1st win at UNC

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 11 January 2020 16:41

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Year after year, every Clemson team that played at North Carolina left the court in the same fashion: by throwing another loss onto what had grown into a bizarrely long streak.

No longer. For once, the Tigers were the ones celebrating in Chapel Hill at Saturday's final horn while the Tar Heels were left to ponder a late collapse to add to their recent struggles.

The way the final moments of regulation unfolded stung Tar Heels coach Roy Williams so badly that he said athletic director Bubba Cunningham should probably fire him.

Forgetting to tell the Tar Heels to foul, Clemson's Aamir Simms hit an overtime-forcing 3-pointer with 3.5 seconds left in regulation and Clemson went on to erase decades of futility at North Carolina by beating the Tar Heels 79-76, earning their first win in 60 tries in Chapel Hill.

"We've had some great moments as a coach and right now I'd say this is my lowest one because losing this game was my fault," Williams said. "Told them if I die tomorrow or 20 years from now that'll be the biggest regret I had in 32 years as a coach. Cause these kids really need a win. And their coach let them down today."

Williams didn't stop there, either.

"Gotta tell Bubba he should probably fire me, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea," Williams said, folding up a stat sheet to put in his jacket pocket. "The coach is supposed to help his kids. I didn't help them very much.''

The mood was far lighter for Clemson coach Brad Brownell and his players.

"We're certainly glad to have it past us and not be asked about it any more," Brownell said, "and we can move on to other things that we need to accomplish in our program.''

Simms finished with 20 points for the Tigers (8-7, 2-3 Atlantic Coast Conference), who trailed by 10 with a little more than two minutes left in regulation. But Clemson made a frantic comeback to force the extra period, then came up with enough key baskets to do what no other predecessor had done in school history.

Clemson's streak began in 1926 and had reached 0-59 to give the Tar Heels (8-8, 1-4) an NCAA record for the longest home winning streak against once opponent. That included 28-0 in the Smith Center, UNC's campus arena that opened in January 1986.

All that pent-up frustration spilled out at the horn, with Tigers players running to midcourt to celebrate while John Newman III wrapped Brownell in an engulfing hug.

"A lot of excitement, just a lot of excitement,'' Newman said. "I've never hugged coach like that before.''

That celebration continued all the way to the Tigers locker room, too, with Brownell exchanging high-fives with players outside in a celebration that was still audible as Williams held his postgame news conference a few doors away.

Simms added a critical driving basket with 18.1 seconds left in OT, then the Tigers got a final stop when Garrison Brooks and then Brandon Robinson both missed tying 3-pointers on the final possession. Robinson's miss had the senior lying on the court as the Tigers launched their celebration despite his career-best 27 points.

Williams -- who remains tied with late mentor Dean Smith for fourth on the Division I men's career coaching wins list with 879 victories -- had no problems with Clemson's celebration.

"I thought they should be that excited, some people get disappointed or mad at the people who (celebrate), but he should be excited," Williams said. "... He hadn't been there every time, but he's had to listen to it. So first of all, I was not disappointed at all. You gotta understand that people have desires and dreams, too."

The Tar Heels were without Cole Anthony, their top player, for a seventh straight game following surgery and freshman point guard Jeremiah Francis didn't play due to left-knee soreness.

Williams said Friday he doesn't say much about the streak to his team beyond noting it has to end at some point and the goal should be to "try to put it off another year." But now, that run is over.

At 8-8, this is the latest into a season that UNC is .500 or worse since it was 16-16 in 2009-10. The Tar Heels led by 10 at the half, making this the largest halftime lead they've blown at the Smith Center since 1997, when Maryland erased a 12-point halftime deficit.

The longest active home court win streak by one opponent over another now belongs to Syracuse, which has won 38 consecutive home meetings vs Colgate.

The Tar Heels don't play until visiting Pittsburgh next Saturday and Williams says his team will get back on track.

"I've told em before things in life don't always work out and you have to face some adversity and you have to come back and keep coming back and keep coming back and keep coming back and I'm very hopeful and I strongly believe the team will keep coming back and keep coming back," Williams said. "And you know the injuries (are a factor). ... It's more than we've ever had, but no one is going to feel bad about North Carolina and it's OK"
