Two must-see TDs have Titans in front in Baltimore

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 11 January 2020 18:01

BALTIMORE -- Tennessee Titans tight end Jonnu Smith made an acrobatic catch in the end zone to open the scoring in the AFC divisional playoffs against the Baltimore Ravens. Smith's catch came as he jumped and tipped the ball to himself only to gather it against his body before landing in bounds.

Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill laid the ball up perfectly and showed trust in Smith to make the play. The score was set up by Kevin Byard's interception of Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson. The ball bounced off Baltimore tight end Mark Andrews and Byard returned it 31 yards and drew a personal foul to add 15 more yards.

According to ESPN Stats & Information research, Tannehill is now 6-for-6 with three touchdowns when targeting Smith in the red zone.

Then, after stopping the Ravens' offense on fourth down, Tannehill went deep, hitting receiver Kalif Raymond for a 45-yard score.

Drummond tossed after throwing ball at Gafford

DETROIT -- Detroit center Andre Drummond was ejected early in the second half of the Pistons' matchup with the Chicago Bulls on Saturday night.

Replays showed Drummond throwing the ball off the back of Bulls center Daniel Gafford's head. Gafford also received a technical foul from the exchange, and Drummond was tossed after a review with 10:42 remaining in the third quarter.

The Pistons were down 63-52 at the time. Drummond finished the game with nine points and four rebounds -- his first time all season being held to fewer than nine rebounds.

Harden passes 20K-point mark as Rockets cruise

HOUSTON -- James Harden scored 32 points in three quarters to surpass 20,000, and the Houston Rockets rolled to an easy 139-109 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday.

Not everything went smoothly for Harden, though, as he turned the ball over 11 times in the first half, marking the most turnovers in a half by any player in the past 20 seasons, according to ESPN Stats & Information. The only other player to have 10 in a half in the past 20 seasons was Gilbert Arenas on Nov. 10, 2009, in the second half against the Heat.

Harden became the first player this season with a points-rebounds-turnovers "triple-double," and he did it by halftime. It was done five times in a game last season.

Saturday marked Harden's sixth career game with 30 or more points and 10 or more turnovers -- twice as many as that of any other player in NBA history.

Harden, who had 12 rebounds and eight assists, is the 45th player in NBA history to reach 20,000 points and the seventh-youngest. He entered the game 10 points away and reached the milestone in fitting fashion: on a step-back 3-pointer midway through the second quarter.

The public address announcer simply said 20,000 after Harden hit the shot, before a video was played during the next timeout to mark the occasion. The video showed Harden making his first points in the NBA while with the Thunder, then making a free throw that gave him 10,000 points and a replay of the 3 that got him to 20,000.

Already without Clint Capela because of a bruised heel, the Rockets lost fellow starter PJ Tucker early in the first quarter, when he fell hard on his right shoulder. Houston was just fine without them, thanks to another big game from Harden and a 30-point, 6-rebound, 10-assist performance by Russell Westbrook.

Harden and Westbrook became the first pair of Rockets teammates to each have 30 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists in a game since Hakeem Olajuwon and Robert Horry on April 14, 1994.

Houston led by double figures for most of the game and used a huge run in the third quarter to put the game out of reach and bounce back after a lopsided loss to Oklahoma City on Thursday.

Seeking fourth appearance, Bojan Tokic senior statesman

Published in Table Tennis
Saturday, 11 January 2020 13:02

Currently listed at no.62 on the men’s world rankings, Bojan Tokic is the most experienced member of the Slovenian team in Gondomar but the leading name is 21 year old Darko Jorgic, he stands at no.40 on the current global order.

Deni Kozul, 22 years old and Peter Hribar, 20 years of age complete the selection; the goal is to repeat the form of 2017 at the European Championships when Bojan Tokic, Darko Jorgic and Deni Kozul combined to secure an unprecedented men’s team bronze medal.

Epic contests

Memorably, it was the wins recorded by Bojan Tokic against both Anton Källberg and Mattias Falck plus, in the vital fifth match of the fixture by Darko Jorgic in opposition to Pär Gerell, that secured a stunning 3-2 quarter-final victory.

The contest lives long in the memory as does his epic fourth round men’s singles encounter at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games against Germany’s Dimitrij Ovtcharov. He won a mammoth opening game of 64 points in total, before losing the next four (31-33, 12-10, 11-4, 11-5, 11-7).

Relishing challenge

A tough task awaits in Gondomar but Bojan Tokic, as always, is confident; full of endeavour. He considers the challenge ahead.

“Of course we have chance to qualify and if not we would not even participate in the tournament in Portugal. Our number one player Darko Jorgic has been playing fantastic table tennis in recent times and we are all in good shape. I think we are ranked 10; we also need to be a little lucky in the draw.

We do not have much time to prepare together because our club schedule is tight, we play league matches every weekend. Just need to take care of ourselves to ensure we are in good shape and we are healthy to compete well in Portugal.

To be part of Olympic Games is the highest an athlete can achieve in life and you cannot describe the feeling when representing your country in such prestigious tournament. Table tennis have given me everything. I always think how would my life look without table tennis? There is of course no answer.”

Gloucester still in the hunt after bonus-point win

Published in Rugby
Saturday, 11 January 2020 12:24

Gloucester kept alive hope of reaching the Champions Cup knockout stages with a bonus-point victory over Montpellier.

The hosts had to win to stay in contention for one of the three best runner-up spots and led 7-3 at half-time after a Willi Heinz try.

Louis Rees-Zammit, Ben Morgan and Todd Gleave then crossed in the second half.

Gloucester must win their final pool game at leaders Toulouse next Sunday to have a chance of going through with the French side.

Eddie Jones was among the crowd at Kingsholm and the England coach watched Gloucester fly-half Danny Cipriani hobble off after just 12 minutes, with Owen Williams coming on for just his second appearance in 10 months after returning from a knee injury in last week's win over Bath.

Although the hosts dominated territory in the first half, they struggled to get to grips with the windy conditions and were penalised for holding on at the breakdown on 20 minutes, with Francois Steyn kicking from just short of halfway for Montpellier, who are bottom of Pool 5 and have won just one of their previous five matches in all competitions.

With Montpellier's Henry Immelman down injured, Gloucester failed to take advantage as they threw a forward pass, but moments later teenage wing Rees-Zammit came inside to burst into a gap and make a one-handed offload over his shoulder to the supporting Heinz, who eased over for a 32nd-minute try.

A loose pass by back row Lewis Ludlow saw the hosts spurn the chance to claim a second try before the interval, but with Montpellier having lost three men to injury in the first half, Gloucester were able to secure the bonus-point win they craved.

An Ollie Thorley break right at the start of the second half put the visitors on the back foot and they strayed offside, with Billy Twelvetrees taking the chance to extend Gloucester's lead with a penalty.

A line-out on the left wing then allowed Gloucester to attack the Montpellier line on 49 minutes and the ball swept through the hands of Twelvetrees and Williams before Jason Woodward tapped it on for the in-form Rees-Zammit to slide over for his ninth try of the season.

Twelvetrees hit a post with his conversion attempt before Thomas Darmon cut the deficit with a penalty, but Morgan and Gleave then burrowed over to ensure a comfortable finish for the hosts.

'We'll go down there and give it our best shot'

Gloucester coach Johan Ackermann told BT Sport: "There's a lot of character in the group and it's great to see the growth of the team, that they're taking in messages and implementing them.

"You have to have that patience, to trust they [the opposition] can't keep it up and holes will open up. We made mistakes in the first half which weren't good enough but credit to the players for staying composed and implementing it [the game plan] in the second half.

"We don't do it on purpose, but I'd love to see the team when we can play well in the first half as well."

On still being able to qualify after losing three pool games: "It's bizarre, but that's the great thing about this game, it keeps you humble the whole time and it's a nice challenge for the players to go down there and try to get that win. We'll see who's fit and give it our best shot."

Teenage wing Louis Rees-Zammit on his recent form: "It's all come quite quick but I'm over the moon and we'll look forward to Toulouse next week. We're ready to take them on and get into the quarter-finals."

Gloucester: Woodward; Rees-Zammit, Harris, Twelvetrees, Thorley; Cipriani, Heinz (capt); Rapava Ruskin, Gleave, Knight, Grobler, Mostert, Ackermann, Ludlow, Morgan.

Replacements: Williams for Cipriani (12), Clarke for Morgan (63), Craig for Mostert (67), Simpson for Heinz (67), Seville for Rapava Ruskin (69), Atkinson for Twelvetrees (69), Walker for Gleave (71).

Not Used: Hohneck.

Montpellier: Steyn; Randle, Goosen, Serfontein, Immelman; Darmon, Fotuali'i; Tcheisvhili, Giudicelli, Guillamon, Le Devedec, Mikautadze, Galletier, Bardy, Du Plessis.

Replacements: Layglon for Immelman (30), Kornath for Bardy (34), Azariashvili for Guillamon (34), Delhommel for Giudicelli (59), Willemse for Le Devedec (59), Aprasidze for Randle (61), Pollard for Fotuali'i (67), Seille for Mikautadze (75).

50 Years Of Pro Stock

Published in Racing
Saturday, 11 January 2020 12:11

As NHRA celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Pro Stock class, we look back at some of its milestones.

NHRA Pro Stock champion Erica Enders earned her third championship in 2019. (Steve Himelstein photo)

2019 — Erica Enders claimed her third series crown, becoming the third female (along with Top Fuel’s Shirley Muldowney and Pro Stock Motorcycle’s Angelle Sampey) to earn three series titles. She also joined the late Bob Glidden and Lee Shepherd along with Warren Johnson, Jeg Coughlin Jr., Darrell Alderman, Greg Anderson and Jason Line as drivers to capture three or more Pro Stock titles.

2018 — The NHRA announced it would trim the Pro Stock schedule from 24 races to 18. Series champion Tanner Gray, 19, the sport’s youngest winner and champion, left NHRA to compete in the ARCA Menards Series East.

2017 — NHRA officials surprised the Pro Stock class by announcing a “Pro Stock Battle Of The Burnouts: Smoke ‘Em If You Got ’Em” initiative for the Labor Day U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis and drew mixed reaction from racers. By early December, the NHRA broke completely with tradition and announced it would allow racers to mix or match engine combinations with any (approved) manufacturer body. Few teams ended up taking advantage of the new rule, which observers thought might be a cost-saving measure for smaller-budgeted teams. Before a pivotal pow-wow among Pro Stock teams and the sanctioning body in which the racers proposed the new engine platform, the NHRA had threatened to limit the Pro Stock fields from 16 to eight and erase the class from a handful of events.

2016 — The electronic-fuel-injection era began for the Pro Stock class. All teams were required to equip their cars with electronically controlled throttle body fuel-injection systems, making engines more relevant from a technology standpoint. NHRA also mandated a 10,500 RPM rev limiter.

2015 — Erica Enders won her second consecutive series championship, racing to a class-best nine victories, the most by any female driver in a single season in NHRA history. NHRA mandated that by the July race in Sonoma, Calif., teams would back their cars into the pits and leave engines uncovered so spectators have better accessibility to see the cars, drivers and crew members.

March 29, 2015 — At zMAX Dragway in Concord, N.C., Jason Line set the national elapsed-time record of 6.455 seconds. The record still stands.

Nov. 2014 — Erica Enders defeated Jason Line in a winner-take-all final round during the NHRA Finals at California’s Auto Club Raceway to earn her first championship.

May 30, 2014 — Erica Enders set the still-standing national speed record of 215.55 mph at New Jersey’s Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.

Aug. 5, 2012 — Erica Enders and Funny Car’s Courtney Force marked the first time two pro-class women have won during the same event.

July 1, 2012 — Erica Enders became the first female Pro Stock winner during an event at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill.

Greg Anderson has been one of the most dominant drivers in Pro Stock in the last 15 years.

May 2, 2010 — At age 66 (66 years, 10 months) Warren Johnson became the oldest Pro Stock winner during the AAA Midwest Nationals at Gateway Motorsports Park in Madison, Ill.

2007 — Jeg Coughlin Jr. earned the first Pro Stock title during the Countdown to the Championship era.

Oct. 2, 2005 — Erica Enders was the first woman to reach a Pro Stock final round at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill.

2004 — Greg Anderson became the third drag racer to be named SPEED Driver of the Year after a 15-victory season in which he qualified first 16 times and compiled a 76-8 race-day record. Anderson earned the championship over runner-up and teammate Jason Line by 742 points, the largest margin in class history.

2001 — Warren Johnson earned his class-leading sixth series championship and was named No. 7 among the Top 10 Drivers from NHRA’s first 50 years of competition.

Warren Johnson was the first driver to break the 200 mph barrier in the NHRA Pro Stock class.

April 25, 1997 — Warren Johnson broke Pro Stock’s 200-mph barrier at Virginia Motorsports Park with a 200.13 mph run in his GM Performance Parts Pontiac. He posted a 200.53 mph speed to cement both ends of the national record.

May 1995 — A still unsolved break-in occurred at the Fairfield, Ill., Wayne County Speed Shop, which housed the Pro Stock race cars of the class-dominant “Dodge Boys,” Darrell Alderman and Scott Geoffrion. The Team Mopar gang, long rumored to be but never exposed as using illegal, performance-enhancing nitrous, found all six of their engines damaged beyond repair and didn’t finish the season. Nothing else of significance was damaged during the break-in at the shop.

May 1994 — Kurt Johnson clocked the first Pro Stock elapsed time quicker than seven seconds (6.988) at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in New Jersey

May 17, 1992 — Lucinda McFarlin became the first female to win a Pro Stock elimination round, beating Don Beverley in the opening round at Memphis Motorsports Park.

1989 — Bob Glidden recorded his fifth straight, 10th overall, and final Pro Stock championship.

1985 — Bruce Allen won the first Horsepower Challenge bonus race, defeating Butch Leal. They repeated the final-round results in 1986.

March 1985 — On his way to a fifth consecutive Pro Stock championship, Lee Shepherd was killed while testing his car in Ardmore, Okla. With partners David Reher and Buddy Morrison, Shepherd earned 26 victories and four titles from 1980 to ’84.

1984 — Lee Shepherd earned his fourth consecutive Pro Stock championship.

1983 — Oldsmobile unveiled the Drag Racing Competition Engine, the first factory block and cylinder head combination developed by a major automaker specifically intended for drag racing.

1982 — The NHRA introduced a maximum engine size and minimum weight of 2,350 for all brands, effectively banishing all weight-break controversies that had become an annoyance for the better part of a decade.

Feb. 1982 — Frank Iaconio lowered the national elapsed-time record to the sub-eight-second range at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, Calif.

1978 — Bob Glidden became the first and only racer in any class to advance to the final round at every event in the series (nine).

Bob Glidden after a victory in 1973.

1974 — Bob Glidden was crowned the first Pro Stock champion as NHRA instituted a points system for the first time.

July 14, 1974 — Larry Lombardo became the only Pro Stock driver to win his first professional start at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in New Jersey.

March 1973 — “Dyno Don” Nicholson reset the national speed record at 150.50 mph in Gainesville, Fla.

1970 — NHRA introduced Pro Stock as a professional category. Bill “Grumpy” Jenkins won the first race driving his big-block ’67 Camaro. Herb McCandless was the first Pro Stock winner during the U.S. Nationals, competing for the famed Sox and Martin team in a ’70 Plymouth Duster.

IMCA Sanctions Modifieds At Winston

Published in Racing
Saturday, 11 January 2020 13:08

ROTHBURY, Mich. – After making the announcement that he’d run IMCA Modifieds beginning in 2020, Winston Speedway promoter Dean Wilkerson had one of the hottest properties in town.

Twenty Friday night dates for the sanctioned division are scheduled this season at the three-eighths-mile clay oval in Rothbury. It didn’t take long for area drivers to start a rush on pit parking reservations at the newest track in IMCA’s Dirt Works Eastern Region.

“We made the announcement that we would sanction with IMCA and posted pit spots for sale. We’ve already sold more than 30,” Wilkerson reported. “The response has been unreal. It’s been more than I ever expected.”

The second of three generations to race at Winston – his father Dean Sr. was a multi-time track champion while son Drew has earned rookie of the year honors there – Wilkerson and wife Lynette took over as promoters last September.

Wilkerson had been in charge of track prep at both Winston and Saturday speedplant Thunderbird Raceway in Muskegon, half an hour to the south

“I grew up at the track and have been a big fan of the IMCA Modifieds over the years,” he said. “Thunderbird has had success with them and the racing family in the Muskegon area is pretty big. We look forward to working with them.”

Some 1,500 yards of clay have already been added to the widened racing surface at Rothbury. A new tech building will be constructed and improvements made to spectator seating before the IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing point season opens on April 17.

Points run through Aug. 28.

“I’m friends with Ron Flinn, the promoter at Crystal Motor Speedway, and he’s been a great help going through the sanction process,” Wilkerson said. “He said you always got a good car count with IMCA and the drivers are loyal to IMCA tracks.”

“What really sold me was the support you get from IMCA when you’re a sanctioned track,” he continued. “I like how they stand on their rules. When drivers travel to different IMCA tracks, they know what the rules are going to be when they get there. IMCA is one of the only sanctioning bodies that stands tall on their rules.”

A two-day special is planned on the final weekend of the season at Winston.

“Winston Speedway is a perfect fit for Michigan and for our Eastern Region,” stated IMCA Vice President of Operations Jim Stannard. “This new sanction gives more drivers the opportunity to challenge for national, regional and state points.”

Van de Beek rules out January Man United move

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 11 January 2020 14:12

Donny van de Beek has ruled out a January move to Manchester United, with the Ajax midfielder insisting that he will stay with the Dutch club at least until the end of this season.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had identified the Netherlands international as a potential solution to the Old Trafford club's determination to bolster their midfield options during the January transfer window.

With Ajax suffering elimination from the Champions League at the group stage last month, sources told ESPN that the United hierarchy were confident that the Dutch club could be persuaded to sell the 22-year-old this month.

Real Madrid are also monitoring the £50m-rated Van de Beek, who has scored eight goals in 26 games for Ajax this season.

But speaking after Ajax's friendly against Club Brugge in Qatar, Van de Beek made it clear that he will not leave the Amsterdam club in January.

"It is not that I can or want to do something at the moment," Van de Beek told FOX Sports Netherlands. "I have said it before and I will say it again: I will remain at Ajax this season. And maybe next season as well.

"These reports about Real Madrid or Man United are a good sign, but it is not important now. I've said I will stay at Ajax and I will do so for 100%."

Despite making it clear that he will not leave the Johan Cruyff Arena this month, Van de Beek has not ruled out a summer move to United.

But when asked whether he could see positives and negatives in a move to United, a club which is currently struggling to rediscover their former glories, Van de Beek admitted that both apply.

"Yeah, you're right," he said. "You can look at it like that. It is not something that is in my mind right now, but what you say is true."

Liverpool's win shows Spurs just how far they have to go

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 11 January 2020 13:04

Another day, another win and another record for Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool. After Roberto Firmino's first-half goal secured a 1-0 victory against Tottenham, the Premier League leaders took their points haul to an incredible 61 from 21 games -- a number unmatched, ever, by any team in Europe's big five leagues.

Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Juventus had previously set the benchmark by accumulating 59 points from their first 21 games of the season, but Liverpool have now smashed that record.

"When somebody told me that, I didn't feel anything," Klopp said. "I don't exactly know what's wrong with me; it's really cool, it's exceptional, but I didn't think about it after the game, and somebody had to remind me about it.

"All we are trying to do is create a basis for the rest of the season. We have a lot of tough games to play, today was difficult, but we have to be ready for the games ahead."

Klopp can start to enjoy the view from the top, though. Liverpool sit 16 points clear of the chasing pack in the Premier League despite having played one game fewer than second-place Leicester City, and at their current rate of progress, could win the title -- the club's first since 1990 -- before the end of March.

Liverpool have been so impressive this season that it is sometimes easy to forget that they have only dropped two points, when drawing at Manchester United in October. They have also taken 88 points from the past 90 available, so their consistency is phenomenal.

United are next up, at Anfield next Sunday, and only the most optimistic Mancunian would expect anything other than Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team to be steamrolled like every other side that has travelled to Liverpool this campaign.

At Tottenham, Liverpool were uncharacteristically sloppy at times, especially in the first half, and they rode their luck after the interval, most notably when Giovani Lo Celso missed a golden chance to equalise on 83 minutes. It was a miss that saw manager Jose Mourinho sink to his knees on the touchline, but after the dust had settled, the Portuguese will also have admired the resolve and winning mentality of Klopp's team.

Whether they blow you away or stumble to victory, Liverpool get the job done, and Mourinho admitted he could have no complaints about the performance of his injury-hit team.

"I think we deserved something," Mourinho said. "That's why I have a good feeling with the boys, because Liverpool are probably the best team in the world, at maximum potential, capable of winning a big FA Cup tie with a second team.

"But we have our problems and I think we deserve more than we got, and I have only reason to be proud of my players. There were lots of positives. We have many difficulties in this moment with not many solutions, but to compete against such a good opponent, I can only be happy with our performance."

It was a fair assessment by Mourinho. Liverpool are untouchable right now, but his Spurs team are struggling to find form for a variety of reasons. The lack of confidence, which contributed to Mauricio Pochettino's dismissal in November, remains an issue, while injuries to Moussa Sissoko, Tanguy Ndombele, Hugo Lloris and, most significantly, Harry Kane, have hit Spurs hard.

There was a time when Mourinho's teams were breaking records and ripping the field apart, just as Liverpool are doing now, especially when he was at Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan, but his challenge at Spurs is entirely different. It is somewhere in between the revival job he had at United -- where he ultimately failed -- and the second time around at Chelsea, when he inherited a team capable of winning big and did so.

Spurs have the players, when everyone is fit, to challenge for silverware, but Mourinho needs to get as much as he can from this squad until the end of the season, when he can attempt to rebuild and make it more capable of delivering when it matters. He needs reliable cover for Kane and a top-class goalkeeper because neither Lloris, nor his deputy Paulo Gazzaniga, are good enough for a big-six Premier League team.

And he needs to move Christian Eriksen out of the club because the Danish midfielder, whose contract expires in the summer, played against Liverpool as though he had checked out months ago. Boos rang out around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when Eriksen was substituted late in the second half, and the jeers were certainly not for Mourinho's decision to take him off.

But there were enough positives for Mourinho to point to, such as Japhet Tanganga's impressive debut at right-back, Dele Alli's spirited performance and the limitless work ethic of Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura. Serge Aurier also looked like a player who could contribute much more in right midfield than at right-back, where his reckless tackling often makes him a liability.

But Spurs under Mourinho are a work in progress, one that is at a very early stage of transition. Liverpool, in contrast, are the finished article under Klopp. Every week brings another high point, and they are at the peak of their powers.

It will be a while before Mourinho, or anyone else, can stop them.
