Stefanos Tsitsipas says he did not mean to hit his dad with his racquet when he lost his temper during his ATP Cup defeat by Australia's Nick Kyrgios.

The Greek, 21, smashed his racquet twice near the team bench after losing a first-set tie-break, catching his dad Apostolos' arm with the second swipe.

Apostolos, also his son's coach, looked stunned and went to sit in the stands, clutching his bruised right arm.

Stefanos, meanwhile, was warned by the umpire and then told off by his mum.

"It happened accidentally. I didn't mean to do it and straight away forgot about it and moved on from there," Tsitsipas told reporters after the 7-6 (9-7) 6-7 (3-7) 7-6 (7-5) loss in Brisbane.

"It happens, I wasn't aiming to do that. It just went out of control, unfortunately.

"Maybe I'll stay in my room for three days, grounded by my father," he joked.

Mum Julia, a former professional tennis player, came down from the stands to lean over the barriers and give her son a telling-off.

Tsitsipas was later docked a point for unsportsmanlike behaviour after smashing a ball towards his team bench.

Kyrgios, who is no stranger to on-court meltdowns himself and is serving a six-month probationary period as part of a suspended 16-week ban for "aggravated behaviour", played down the incidents.

"I've done some stupid things as well in the heat of the moment, so it was obviously an accident," he said after Australia's 3-0 victory in the tie.

Hosts Australia play Great Britain in the quarter-finals of the inaugural ATP Cup in Sydney on Thursday (starts 23:00 GMT Wednesday).

Sources: United's Young in talks with Inter

Published in Soccer
Wednesday, 08 January 2020 02:02

Manchester United defender Ashley Young is in talks with Inter Milan, sources have told ESPN.

The 34-year-old could sign for the Italian side this month or, if United block the deal, sign a precontract agreement and move to Serie A on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Young's contract at Old Trafford is due to expire on June 30 and he has been free to negotiate with clubs outside England since Jan. 1.

- When does the transfer window reopen?
- All major completed transfer deals

He was left out of the squad ahead of the 3-1 defeat to Manchester City on Tuesday, although after the game United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer suggested he was not keen to let the England international leave midway through the season.

"Tonight is not the time to talk about players leaving because we need the players we have in the squad and we've got a few months left of this season," Solskjaer said.

"We can't weaken ourselves, we need to strengthen ourselves, if any movement is going to happen."

Young has made more than 250 appearances for United since arriving from Aston Villa under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2011.

He was named club captain in the summer following the departure of Antonio Valencia but has found opportunities limited this season with Solskjaer preferring Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka as his first-choice full-backs.

If Young does join Inter, he will be the third player make the switch to the San Siro in the last six months after Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez both joined Antonio Conte's side in the summer.

Inter are top of the Serie A table after 18 games, ahead of champions Juventus on goal difference. After finishing third in their Champions League group they have dropped down into the Europa League and could draw United later in the competition.

Bid for Shane Warne's baggy green crosses AUD 500,000

The baggy green cap that Shane Warne has put up for auction has crossed AUD 500,000, with two days still remaining for the bidding.

The auction is being held to raise funds for the bushfire appeal, with the disaster hitting large parts of Australia. In addition to Warne, another legendary former bowler has also put his baggy green up for auction in Jeff Thomson.

The current price for Warne's cap is the highest ever bid for a baggy green, beating the AUD 425,000 that was bid for Don Bradman's cap in January 2003.

Warne, 50, is Australia's most successful Test bowler with 708 wickets, and is commonly regarded as the game's greatest ever legspinner.

Thomson, 69, played 51 Tests for Australia from 1973 to 1985, taking 200 wickets, and was widely held to be the fastest bowler in the world. He will be auctioning his last remaining baggy green and his cricket vest. All funds raised through the auction of Thomson's items will be donated to charities and fire services.

"I don't have much of my memorabilia left, so these two items are quite rare and special," Thomson was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au. "It's hard to say what these pieces may go for, but I just hope that they can raise some decent funds that will really make a difference for all of those in need right now."

How Rashid Khan and Haris Rauf got their hat-tricks

Published in Cricket
Wednesday, 08 January 2020 02:09

Rashid Khan and Haris Rauf turned it on in the new year playing for Adelaide Strikers and Melbourne Stars. First, the Afghanistan legspinner nearly turned the game, turning a simple Sydney Sixers chase into a very nervy finish

10.5 Rashid Khan to Vince, OUT, that's what Strikers needed! Length ball outside off, and a bit of turn away from Vince. He looks to defend, but it takes a big nick into the keeper's gloves

JM Vince c †Carey b Rashid Khan 27 (20b 4x4 0x6) SR: 135.00

10.6 Rashid Khan to Edwards, OUT, two in two! First-ball duck. Good length on off, but the googly spins inwards. Edwards is caught on the wrong line, and the ball hits him in front of leg stump. Rashid's massive appeal may have convinced the umpire, because that was sliding down leg for certain

J Edwards lbw b Rashid Khan 0 (1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

12.1 Rashid Khan to Silk, OUT, he's got a hat-trick! Full on off, and the googly turns through Silk's defense, and clips middle stump. The Strikers are now roaring! The BBL's fifth hat-trick

JC Silk b Rashid Khan 16 (17b 2x4 0x6) SR: 94.11

Then the Pakistan fast bowler took centre stage at the MCG, going bang, bang and bang against Sydney Thunder.

19.2 Haris Rauf to Gilkes, OUT, another slower ball on the legs, skies this flick aiming for midwicket but it sails toward Lamichhane at deep fine leg. He comes in off the rope 15 yards and judges it fairly well, lunging forward at the end to claim this. Give an assist to Zampa for cutting the previous ball to a single to put Gilkes on strike.

M Gilkes c Lamichhane b Haris Rauf 41 (35b 1x4 2x6) SR: 117.14

19.3 Haris Rauf to Ferguson, OUT, on a hat-trick! Another cutter at 125 kph on a fullish length. Ferguson hasn't looked comfortable since being struck on the toe in Rauf's previous over. Ferguson shuffles well across his stumps mistimes this off his thigh and ricochets into the stumps.

CJ Ferguson b Haris Rauf 35 (27b 3x4 1x6) SR: 129.62

19.4 Haris Rauf to Sams, OUT, a doubleheader double hat-trick! Good length ball skids on to beat Sams' flick across and pinned lbw in front of middle. Replays indicate Sams was struck high on the back leg in front of middle and leg with the ball tailing in. Very favorable decision on height and line but he's bowled very well today.

Stuart Meaker signs for Sussex in bid to revive career

Published in Cricket
Wednesday, 08 January 2020 02:21

Stuart Meaker, the fast bowler who played four white-ball internationals for England in 2011 and 2012, has become the latest in a line of seamers to sign for Sussex in an attempt to get their career back on track.

Meaker, 30, had a year left on his contract at Surrey, but director of cricket Alec Stewart agreed to let him move to Hove in order to pursue first-team opportunities.

Once considered the fastest bowler in the country after being clocked at 95mph in ECB trials at Loughborough, Meaker has struggled due to a series of injuries, playing only one County Championship game in the last two seasons.

Sussex has become something of a go-to destination for fast bowlers hoping to revive their careers in recent years. Chris Jordan, Tymal Mills, Ajmal Shahzad, Ollie Robinson and Aaron Thomason are among the bowlers to join the club after struggling to make an impression at their previous counties, while Ishant Sharma recently attributed his international revival to his time at Hove as an overseas player.

Meaker made his England debut in 2011 as a 22-year-old, taking a wicket in ODIs at Mumbai and Kolkata, and toured India with the Test squad in their victorious 2012 series. He played two T20Is immediately after that series, but was soon "bordering on the yips" following various confidence-denting injuries.

England have continued to monitor his progress. He has worked extensively with Kevin Shine, the former ECB fast-bowling coach, at the national performance centre in Loughborough, and played for the Lions as recently as the 2016-17 winter.

"I am undoubtedly grateful to Surrey for the opportunities and memories I've had at the club since I was 13," Meaker said. "I have been fortunate to have played alongside some of the greats of the game and in front of some of the best crowds the game has to offer.

"While I've loved being a part of the wider squad and their successes the last few seasons, I feel now is the time for me to seek opportunities to get more regular game time and get back to enjoying the game that I love.

""I look forward to being able to contribute to an already supremely talented squad of players as well as a team with direction and desire to achieve success and silverware in the future."

Jason Gillespie, Sussex's head coach, said: "I'm really excited that Stuart has agreed to join us.

"He gives us some real depth in our pace department and Stuart is very keen to show what he can do for Sussex.

"As someone who has played international cricket in the past, we know what Stuart is capable of. Everyone at Sussex is really looking forward to working with him and seeing him perform strongly for our club."

Roger Federer, Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal will take part in an exhibition match to raise money for a bushfire relief fund in Australia.

The match is scheduled for 15 January, five days before the start of the Australian Open, and will take place at Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena.

Australian Nick Kyrgios will also be playing, along with Stefanos Tsitsipas, Naomi Osaka and Caroline Wozniacki.

Fires in Australia have killed at least 25 people since September.

Millions of animals have also been killed and almost 2,000 homes destroyed.

Milder weather brought brief respite last weekend but fire crews are again preparing for worsening conditions with temperatures predicted to soar on Friday.

"For a period of about two and a half hours we're going to be showcasing the game, but also coming together as a community to play our part in the relief effort," said Tennis Australia chief Craig Tiley.

Kyrgios is donating 200 Australian dollars (£106) for every ace he hits in events held in Australia in January as part of the fundraising effort, while compatriot Ashleigh Barty will donate all of her prize money from the Brisbane International.

Meanwhile, a group of nine Australian players from the National Basketball Association (NBA) have pledged 750,000 Australian dollars (£392,000) towards the relief and recovery efforts.

Ben Simmons, Aron Baynes, Jonah Bolden, Ryan Broekhoff, Matthew Dellavedova, Dante Exum, Joe Ingles, Thon Maker and Patty Mills are the players involved.

"We are heartbroken over the devastation these fires are causing all across our homeland," the players said.

"Our thoughts are with our families, friends and all of the people of Australia. We hope you feel our love and support and know that we will continue to bring awareness to this crisis globally and provide assistance in any way we can."

Maria Sharapova given Australian Open wildcard

Published in Tennis
Wednesday, 08 January 2020 00:09

Former champion Maria Sharapova has been handed a wildcard for the Australian Open as she seeks to put behind her an injury-hit 2019.

The 32-year-old Russian former world number one has dropped to 147th after playing just 15 matches last year because of a long-term shoulder injury.

Five-time Grand Slam champion Sharapova was beaten in the first round of the Brisbane International on Tuesday.

It was her first match since losing in the US Open first round in September.

Her current ranking means she would have had to come through qualifying to reach the main draw of the opening Grand Slam of the year in Melbourne.

The 2008 Australian Open champion failed a drugs test at the 2016 edition, which led to a 15-month ban from tennis.

She reached the fourth round of last year's tournament, losing in three sets to Ashleigh Barty, who has since become world number one.

"To be in the draw of the Australian Open is incredible," said Sharapova, who also reached the final in 2007, 2012 and 2015.

"I've had wonderful experiences there, from holding the championship trophy to losing some very tough finals as well - there's been a lot of ups and downs in Australia.

"So to have another chance, another opportunity, to compete on all those courts is very special."

ATP Cup: Rafael Nadal puts Spain into quarter-finals

Published in Tennis
Tuesday, 07 January 2020 23:42

Rafael Nadal came back twice from a break down against Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka to put Spain into the ATP Cup quarter-finals in Australia.

The world number one won 7-6 (7-4) 6-4) to give Spain an unassailable 2-0 lead in the tie after Robert Bautista Agut had earlier beaten Go Soeda 6-2 6-4.

Japan must win the doubles rubber to stay in contention for a last-eight spot as one of the two best runners-up.

Davis Cup champions Spain have won all three of their group matches.

An unusually sluggish Nadal was made to work hard against world number 72 Nishioka, making 19 unforced errors and dropping serve twice in the first set.

It was the first time Nadal, who has not dropped a set at the tournament yet, had played in the hot conditions of the Perth day session.

"It's the first time I played under these heavy conditions, so the feeling on court is completely different," said Nadal, who will be seeking to equal Roger Federer's record of 20 Grand Slam singles titles at the Australian Open, which starts on 20 January.

The ATP Cup is a new 24-nation knockout tournament that has been set up by the men's professional tour to kick off the 2020 season.

It features six groups of four teams, who each play three round-robin ties in an event played across Sydney, Brisbane and Perth.

Among the countries who have already qualified for the quarter-finals are Great Britain, who face hosts Australia on Thursday (starts 23:00 GMT Wednesday).

Novak Djokovic's Serbia and Russia are also through to the knockout stage, which will be played in Sydney.

Japan names Olympic Games team

Published in Table Tennis
Wednesday, 08 January 2020 00:17

Newly established world no.5 Harimoto and world no.11 Hirano, silver medallists in the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games,  are set to make their debuts on the grandest stage of sport on their home turf, with the likes of world no.3 Ito making her second appearance at the Olympic Games, after she secured the bronze medal for her national team in Rio 2016.

Ito and Ishikawa – set to play in her third consecutive Olympic Games – had previously confirmed their spots in the women’s singles as they were Japan’s top-ranked female athletes as on the latest January rankings. Hirano joins her compatriots for the team event – securing her place ahead of the likes of Hina Hayata and Hitomi Sato – both of whom have previously made impressive pairings with Mima Ito.

However, Hirano adds a wealth of podium experience alongside Ishikawa, having secured bronze at the Liebherr 2017 World Championships, after winning the Asian Championships in the same year. The selection suggests that they have favoured an an athlete who is reliable for both singles and doubles.

Modern look

Meanwhile, for the men’s singles, Harimoto will be joined by Niwa and Mizutani… Niwa and two-time Olympic Games medallist Mizutani are set to make their third and fourth straight appearances respectively, giving this Japan side a modern look of “been there, done that”.

The choice of Mizutani for the team event was made easy because of his seven doubles titles as well as superior results. It is also the reasoning for the choice of pairing for the newly-added mixed doubles event at Tokyo.

Powerful pair

Jun Mizutani and Mima Ito will take centre stage in the mixed doubles event, fresh from their engaging final at the ITTF World Tour Grand Finals against Chinese pair Xu Xin and Liu Shiwen – which they lost 3-2, despite leading 2-0; their competitive nature makes them the most powerful pairing – and have rightly deserved their tickets to the Olympic Games.

Just how impressive will be the results this roster of champions brings for the Japanese?
