Thunder evacuated from OKC mall after shooting

Published in Basketball
Thursday, 19 December 2019 16:24

Thunder players were among those evacuated from an Oklahoma City mall when an isolated shooting took place on Thursday.

The players were attending a movie at the Penn Square Mall when a man was shot elsewhere at the shopping complex.

"Thunder security was made aware immediately. The team was never in danger and was safe during the entirety of the event," the team said in a statement.

Police tweeted that a suspect was seen fleeing from the area of Foot Locker. Police were searching the stores for the suspect while also clearing out shoppers who were still hiding.

Sgt. Kris Gellenbeck said the victim was hospitalized in critical condition after being shot in the upper body.

Gellenbeck said it wasn't known whether the suspect had left Penn Square Mall. Video from the scene showed a heavy police presence in the parking lot Thursday evening.

Raptors' Gasol out at least 2 weeks for hamstring

Published in Basketball
Thursday, 19 December 2019 16:27

Toronto Raptors center Marc Gasol will miss a period of weeks with a left hamstring strain, league sources told ESPN.

Gasol's rehabilitation program will dictate how soon he'll be able to return, but he's expected to be out of the lineup for the foreseeable future, sources said.

Gasol has started all of Toronto's games this season but has been used in a reduced-minutes role. He's averaged nine points and 6.6 rebounds in 24 minutes per game. Serge Ibaka and Chris Boucher are expected to take on increased center minutes during Gasol's absence.

Gasol, 34, was a key part of the Raptors' championship run a year ago, joining the team at the February trade deadline from Memphis. Gasol is a three-time All-Star and a 2015 first-team All-NBA player and NBA Defensive Player of the Year.

AD to return against Bucks after 1-game absence

Thursday, 19 December 2019 16:01

Los Angeles Lakers forward Anthony Davis will return Thursday night at Milwaukee after missing one game with a sprained ankle.

Davis did not play in the Lakers' loss at Indiana on Tuesday due to the mild ankle sprain. It was the second game Davis has missed this season. He is leading the team in points (27.4), rebounds (9.3) and blocks (2.6) per game.

Davis tweaked the ankle during Sunday's win against the Hawks. He grabbed at his right ankle when fouled on a layup in the closing minutes, but he was able to finish the game.

The Lakers and Bucks square off with matching 24-4 records, each at the top of their conferences. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the game will be only the third in NBA history between teams 20 games over .500 before Jan. 1.

On Dec. 30, 1980, the 28-8 Celtics beat the 32-8 Suns 116-97. Larry Bird had a triple-double and added five steals, while Tiny Archibald had 25 points and 10 assists in the win. Boston went on to win the NBA Finals that season.

On Dec. 15, 1972, the 23-3 Celtics beat the 25-4 Lakers 102-98. Dave Cowens and John Havlicek outscored Wilt Chamberlain and Jerry West 50-40 in the win. The Lakers would go on to reach the NBA Finals.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Dick Klamfoth, a three-time winner of the Daytona 200 at Daytona Int’l Speedway, has died at the age of 91.

Born in Columbus, Ohio in 1928, Klamfoth began riding motorcycles at the age of 14. He won the Daytona 200 on a Norton in his first outing in 1949, following that up with additional victories on the beach course in 1951 and 1952.

From 1954 to 1961, Klamfoth made his mark on the Grand National Championship, finishing in the top 10 each year and scoring five national Half-Mile wins on his BSA. After retiring from racing, he was inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame in 1998 and the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2017.

Klamfoth’s record of three Daytona 200 victories held for nearly 50 years, but he will be synonymous with America’s most historic motorcycle race forever. A perpetual promoter of motorcycle racing, Klamfoth and his wife Bev led the charge to create the Daytona 200 Monument in 2002. Located on the beach near Main Street in Daytona Beach, the monument is dedicated to preserving the history of the legendary beach race that birthed Daytona Bike Week.

Klamfoth’s funeral will be held on Saturday, December 21. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Daytona 200 Monument at www.daytona200monument.com.

Kucherov back on Lightning's top line vs. Stars

Published in Hockey
Thursday, 19 December 2019 14:03

Tampa Bay forward Nikita Kucherov, the defending league MVP, was back on the first line during morning skate on Thursday, in preparation for the Lightning's home game vs. the Dallas Stars.

After a costly turnover, Kucherov spent most of the third period and then overtime on the bench during the Lightning's 4-3 win over the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday. It was a particularly surprising move, given Kucherov had scored earlier in the game.

But Thursday morning, last year's Hart Trophy winner was back on the Lightning's top line, with Brayden Point and Ondrej Palat.

"Kuch is going to be fine. He's a very prideful player," captain Steven Stamkos said. "He's going to come out and be great and hopefully we'll never have to talk about it again."

On Saturday, in a 5-2 loss to the Washington Capitals, Kucherov left midway through the second period after taking John Carlson's shot off the right foot-shin area. He did not return. But he started against the Senators, and remained in his normal slot until the third.

"It was just our decision. It could have been anybody," Lightning coach Jon Cooper said Tuesday night. "As a group, we put ourselves in a position that we wanted to win this game, and this is what we were going with tonight."

Like the Lightning, Kucherov is battling to regain last season's form. Leading Tampa Bay to the Presidents' Trophy for the best regular-season point total (128), Kucherov had 41 goals and 128 points. This season, he has 11 and 35.

The Lightning have won three of the last four games, though they are still out of playoff position in the Eastern Conference, entering Thursday.

"It's just an ongoing process," Stamkos said. "We are improving in the right direction with puck possession and shot attempts. It's trending the right way. We'll keep trying to improve."

Dak on hurt shoulder: 'I'll be good to go Sunday'

Published in Breaking News
Thursday, 19 December 2019 13:06

FRISCO, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott eliminated any drama regarding his availability to play against the Philadelphia Eagles because of a sprained right shoulder.

"I'll be good to go Sunday," Prescott said Thursday.

Prescott has not taken a snap in practice the past two days and he has yet to attempt to throw, but he said he might try to do that Friday or definitely on Saturday before the Cowboys fly to Philadelphia for the de facto NFC East championship game at Lincoln Financial Field. He said he will go through a full workout before the game to test his arm.

"I'm getting better, simple as that," Prescott said. "Mobility, function of it, it's all improving. That's the key. That's the goal."

Prescott said he dealt with similar injuries "every other week" while at Mississippi State and did not miss a game because of it.

"It's just annoying," Prescott said. "I mean, it's nagging. Definitely dealt with a lot more pain, so it's just annoying."

He said it is unlikely that he will wear any added protection for his shoulder because he doesn't want it to hinder his throwing motion, and he was not sure if he would need any pain-killing injection before the game.

While he did not attempt to throw during the portion of practice open to the media on Thursday, he went through individual drills. During the team portion of practice, he went through his drops off to the side, doing everything but finishing with a pass.

"It's frustrating. I'm a guy that likes to be in the action," Prescott said. "I don't like to sit back, don't like to take any reps off, but it's good mentally. It's always fun just challenging yourself, and right now it's just a mental challenge. Same preparation in the game plan, if not doubling down, since I don't get those physical reps."

Prescott suffered the injury in the first quarter of last week's win against the Los Angeles Rams. He said the pain was at its worst on Tuesday, which led to an MRI.

"It happened early in the game and I was fine, played throughout the whole second half without it being a problem, without it being an issue," he said. "And I expect the same this Sunday."

Prescott has not missed a start in his career and the past two days have been the first two times he has not practiced fully. While it was strange not seeing him practice, Jason Witten does not believe the absence will disrupt the preparation of the offense.

"He's communicating when we're in meetings," Witten said. "We're talking a lot, he runs the meetings this afternoon, does it all week. I think he's been above and beyond in all of those aspects. It's just those 35, 40 passes you throw in a week you're not getting from, him but he's constantly communicating, so I don't think that's an issue."

At 7-7, the Cowboys can clinch the division and a playoff spot for the second straight year and third time in Prescott's four seasons. A loss would not eliminate the Cowboys from the postseason, but they would need to beat the Washington Redskins in Week 17 and have the Eagles lose to the New York Giants.

"This is what you play the game for," Prescott said. "When I was a little boy and dreamed about being the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, this is the situation you thought about being in and excited for this moment, this opportunity for our team."

Jets' Bell expects Steelers fans' boos at home

Published in Breaking News
Thursday, 19 December 2019 14:14

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets running back Le'Veon Bell will encounter a potentially weird dynamic Sunday: He could get booed in his own stadium by fans who used to cheer his name.

Bell faces the Pittsburgh Steelers for the first time since their messy breakup, and he suspects the Terrible Towel-waving fans -- known for traveling well throughout the NFL -- will invade MetLife Stadium with mixed emotions about him.

"It'll probably be 50-50," Bell said Thursday. "I think half will be happy to see me and still love me, and half that hates me, despises me. It is what it is. I'm going to show love, regardless. Anybody who's wearing my jersey, I'll go sign it. It's going to be fun."

Bell downplayed the matchup, but this figures to be emotional game for him. He was one of the Steelers' best players from 2013 to 2017, but the two sides engaged in a nasty contract dispute in 2018, prompting Bell to sit out the entire season as an unsigned player. Some teammates were critical of his decision.

Bell played the bygones card, insisting there's no bad blood.

"No, last year was last year and two years ago was two years ago," he said. "I'm over it now. I'm past it. I'm here. I'm with the New York Jets, and I'm happy."

Bell, who signed a four-year, $52.5 million contract with the Jets, insisted this game will have no more juice than any other contest. With a smile, he added, "I guess if I could find an extra squeeze in there, I'll try."

The Steelers (8-6), battling for the second wild-card spot, are desperate for a win. The Jets (5-9) are out of the playoff race, looking to finish the season on the upswing.

They expect to feel like the road team in their own home, much like they did Nov. 24 against the Oakland Raiders. The Jets were booed during pregame warm-ups, which they used as fuel for their victory, according to safety Jamal Adams.

The atmosphere will be similar against the Steelers. In fact, the Jets are practicing their silent count on offense, just in case it gets loud.

"It's going to be packed with Steeler fans," Bell said. "When we played the Raiders, there were a lot of Raider fans and it was loud. I think it'll be the same as that, if not more. Steeler fans travel well. I definitely know that."

This has been a disappointing season for Bell, who hasn't approached his Pittsburgh production. After averaging a league-record 129 total yards per game in Pittsburgh, he's down to 83 yards with the Jets, who have struggled to find ways to use him in the passing game.

Bell said he doesn't regret his decision.

"I'm happy where I'm at," he said. "The way things are going, obviously it's not ideal with the way our record is. But like I said in Week 2, Week 3, this is kind of like rebuilding. I want to be a part of it and see it grow."

Bell is coming off his best rushing day -- a season-high 87 yards against the Baltimore Ravens -- perhaps an indication that things are turning.

"I feel like the last few outings, it's looked more like we thought it was going to look," coach Adam Gase said.

Bell isn't getting as many carries as he did in Pittsburgh, prompting him to say last week that his talent isn't being maximized. On Thursday, he reiterated that notion, saying, "I feel like I've been playing some of my best football. When I get opportunities to touch the rock, I feel like I make the most of it."

A year ago, Bell's absence created tension in the Steelers' locker room. Now?

"I'm telling you, we love Le'Veon," Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey said Wednesday. "At the end of the day, the outside world can think whatever they want, but everyone in this locker room loves and respects him. At the end of the day, hell, if he was still here, we'll be riding with him."

ESPN's Brooke Pryor contributed to this report.

Peeke joins long list of injured Blue Jackets

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The trainer's room is getting crowded for the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Rookie Andrew Peeke is the latest to head there. The 21-year-old defenseman suffered a broken finger Tuesday night at Detroit in just his seventh game after being called up from the Blue Jacket's AHL affiliate in Cleveland. He is expected to miss four to six weeks.

Defensemen Ryan Murray (upper body) and Markus Nutivaara (upper body) also have gone out with injuries this week.

Forwards Sonny Milano (concussion), Josh Anderson (shoulder) and rookie Emil Bemstrom (ribs) also are on the shelf for the Blue Jackets, who are in seventh place in the Metropolitan Division despite winning back-to-back games this week.

They return to action Thursday night against the Los Angeles Kings.

Prosecutors find no crimes in Santa Anita deaths

Published in Breaking News
Thursday, 19 December 2019 11:45

LOS ANGELES -- California prosecutors found no evidence of animal cruelty or other crimes during an investigation into a spike in horse deaths at Santa Anita Park racetrack over the past year, according to a report issued Thursday.

A task force formed by the Los Angeles district attorney found the 49 deaths at the track during a 12-month period ending in June occurred at a rate higher than the national average but lower than previous years in the past decade and lower than Churchill Downs in Kentucky.

District attorney Jackie Lacey made two dozen recommendations for improving safety at racetracks and said she would sponsor legislation to make veterinary records more transparent for horses racing in California.

"Horse racing has inherent risks but is a legally sanctioned sport in California," Lacey said in a statement. "Greater precautions are needed to enhance safety and protect both horses and their riders.''

PETA reacted strongly to the report.

"It's beyond credible that the district attorney doesn't see that trainers who medicate horses obviously know that they are injured and sore, so they should be criminally culpable if they then force them to race to their deaths," PETA senior vice president Kathy Guillermo said in a statement. "Fortunately, the D.A. agrees with what PETA has said for the last decade: The racing industry has not done enough to protect horses on race tracks and the industry is dead itself unless it does far more. Legislation to increase transparency in this secret and deadly industry is essential, and PETA will continue to work to ban drugging, whipping and all abuse in California and every racing state. No sane person can find it acceptable for horses to suffer and die in a sport.

Wiseman leaves Memphis, to enter NBA draft

Published in Basketball
Thursday, 19 December 2019 12:05

The James Wiseman era at Memphis has ended after just three games.

Wiseman, who has missed the past seven games due to a 12-game suspension stemming from an NCAA investigation and was set to return at South Florida on Jan. 12, announced on Instagram on Thursday that he will leave the program, hire an agent and prepare for the 2020 NBA draft.

View this post on Instagram

Today I formally withdrew from the University of Memphis and I will be preparing for the next chapter of my life. Ever since I was a little kid, it's been a dream of mine to play in the NBA. Throughout this process, I've asked God to ordain my steps and lead me in the right direction. God is my lord and salvation, and throughout this process he has comforted me. This was not how I expected my freshman season to be, but I'm thankful for everyone who has supported my family and me throughout this process. I want to thank the coaches and staff for all their support and my teammates for pushing me everyday at practice. I feel blessed for the opportunity to be a Tiger and for having the honor to play with these special group of guys. I can't wait to see what all they accomplish this season. The friends and fans of Tiger Nation will always hold a place in my heart. #GoTigersGo ???

A post shared by James Wiseman (@bigticket_j13) on

Wiseman is currently the projected No. 3 pick in the upcoming draft on ESPN.com. In three games with Memphis (9-1), he averaged 19.7 points, 10.7 rebounds and 3.0 blocks. The 7-foot-1 center was suspended after the school admitted that Penny Hardaway made an $11,500 payment to Wiseman's mother in 2017 before accepting the head-coaching job at his alma mater.

Per the NCAA, Hardaway's $1 million donation to the school in 2008 made him a booster and therefore his payment to Wiseman's mother was an improper benefit. The school vowed to appeal the NCAA's ruling, and Wiseman's lawyers filed for a temporary injunction that allowed Wiseman to play while the investigation continued. But the NCAA announced the 12-game suspension last month and the school lost its appeal.

The Tigers are 7-0 without Wiseman, a streak that includes Saturday's 51-47 win over a nationally ranked Tennessee team.

If Hardaway had any inclination that Wiseman might leave the team, he did not offer any insight after the win over the Vols.

"I think this was a building win for us, meaning like everybody in that building, from the trainer to the [graduate assistants] to the managers, everybody that had any part to do with these kids just getting prepared and ready to go to play this game," Hardaway said. "It takes everybody, man. As a team, you can only keep preaching: We're down, but we're not out. And we just keep fighting."

With the team's success sans Wiseman and previously pending return of the projected lottery pick, Memphis seemed capable of evolving into a national title contender. The ceiling for the program, however, is lower now with Wiseman's departure.
