Thursday's first game went as expected with the Bears beating the Lions, who were down to their third-string quarterback. The Bills proved they were for real in the second game, beating the Cowboys at Dallas. And, the Saints clinched the NFC South with a win over the Falcons.

Here are Week 13's biggest takeaways from NFL Nation.

CHI-DET | BUF-DAL | NO-ATL

Chicago Bears 24, Detroit Lions 20

Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky played his best game of the season. It's easy to pick apart the handful of mistakes Trubisky committed against the Lions. Yes, Trubisky needed to run straight ahead and not bounce outside on a third-and-short scramble near the end of the first half. Last season, Trubisky probably plows ahead for the first down. This season, because of shoulder and hip injuries, it's not that simple. Trubisky also threw a bad interception on a ball intended for Allen Robinson. But he completed 29 of 38 passes for 338 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, and led Chicago on its winning drive. The Bears will take those results any day of the week. -- Jeff Dickerson

Next game: vs. Dallas (Dec. 5, 8:20 p.m. ET)

The Lions still haven't figured out how to win. Two-thirds of the way through the season and the Lions are in the same place they were two months ago. As coach Matt Patricia said, they are trying to "break through that thing that's stopping us right now and smash that so we can get this thing going." Except Detroit hasn't done that, and it's different versions of the same story every week -- an offense that does well enough to win and a defense that fails at key moments. Five consecutive losses have ended the meaningful part of Detroit's season, and the next month could determine what things look like in 2020 and beyond. -- Michael Rothstein

Next game: at Minnesota (Dec. 8, 1 p.m. ET)

Buffalo Bills 26, Dallas Cowboys 15

The Bills can beat good teams, too. The bulk of the criticism against Buffalo has centered on its seven wins against teams with losing records and lack of a "marquee" victory. The regular-season stage doesn't get much brighter than Thanksgiving at Dallas, and the Bills turned in their best performance -- yet they don't see it as a statement win. With 10 days to prepare for the Ravens in Week 14, Buffalo thinks it simply met its expectations. "No statement game, this is just another week in Buffalo Bills land," defensive end Jerry Hughes said. "This is what we do, this is what the [Bills] Mafia expects us to do." -- Marcel Louis-Jacques

Next game: vs. Baltimore (Dec. 8, 1 p.m. ET)

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will not make a coaching change with four games to play. He does not believe moving on from Jason Garrett will make a difference in how the team plays, despite Dallas losing for the sixth time in nine games with Thursday's defeat to Buffalo. "I believe in redemption," Jones said. The owner's strategy is more hope than anything else. At 6-6, the Cowboys will remain in first place in the NFC East regardless of what Philadelphia does Sunday, and they say they remain confident despite evidence to the contrary. When asked why the Cowboys haven't righted the ship yet, quarterback Dak Prescott, who also expressed confidence in Garrett, said, "It will happen." That's the closest thing to a guarantee that came from the locker room. -- Todd Archer

Next game: at Chicago (Dec. 5, 8:20 p.m. ET)

New Orleans Saints 26, Atlanta Falcons 18

The Saints (10-2) became the first team to clinch a playoff spot this season. And they got to serve up some revenge on Thanksgiving night after their ugly loss to the Falcons 18 days earlier. But they were still far from perfect, thanks to another barrage of penalties, some dropped passes and a shocking inability to recover onside kicks. They need a much cleaner performance if they want to aim for a higher seed, with a critical home date looming against the 49ers in Week 14. -- Mike Triplett

Next game: vs. San Francisco (Dec. 8, 1 p.m. ET)

The best move Falcons made Thursday night was keeping receiver Julio Jones out of the lineup with a shoulder injury. Although the now 3-9 Falcons had little to play for with the postseason essentially out of reach, they needed to be cognizant of the future of their best player. The Falcons obviously weren't the same on offense without Jones on the field. Matt Ryan didn't have his safety net on the field. And the Saints could focus their defensive attention on closing down Calvin Ridley as the primary target. Now let's see if the Falcons continue to play it cautious with Jones moving forward. -- Vaughn McClure

Next game: vs. Carolina (Dec. 8, 1 p.m. ET)

The NFL's trio of Thanksgiving Day games delivered one divisional championship and put a second team on the cusp of a playoff berth. The Saints clinched the NFC South with a 26-18 victory over the Falcons, securing the first of 12 playoff spots. They are the 15th team to win a division in Week 13 or earlier since the league realigned into eight divisions in 2002. Another of those teams? The 2009 Saints, who also went on to win the Super Bowl.

Earlier in the day, the Bills put themselves as close as they could get to a wild-card playoff berth with an impressive 26-15 victory at Dallas. They now have nine wins and probably need to win only one more to ensure their second trip to the playoffs in three seasons.

Week 13 will pick up Sunday with two more teams in position to join the Saints (and soon the Bills) in the postseason. Let's take a closer look at the playoff picture as it stands now through the Thanksgiving Day games of Week 13, using ESPN's Football Power Index (FPI) to inform our analysis.

Note: X denotes a team that has clinched a playoff berth, while Z shows a team that has clinched its division and Y indicates a team that secured a first-round bye (an asterisk shows home-field advantage).

AFC

1. New England Patriots (10-1)

The Patriots are closing in on another AFC East title, but their winning formula is about to be tested. They'll play consecutive games against the Texans and Chiefs, two of the NFL's 10 highest-scoring offenses. Will the Patriots' league-leading defense hold up against them? Or will their offense, which has averaged 16.7 points over its past three games, need to keep pace? Regardless, the Patriots' favorable schedule thereafter -- they'll finish the season against the Bengals, Bills and Dolphins -- makes them a reasonable bet to clinch both the division and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. FPI gives them a 78% chance of the latter. They can clinch a playoff berth with a victory over the Texans and a loss (or tie) by either the Raiders or Steelers.

Next up: at Houston

2. Baltimore Ravens (9-2)

Can anyone stop the Ravens during the regular season? The Rams had no shot Monday night, getting blown out of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The Patriots have already tried and failed (in a 17-point loss during Week 9). The next -- and perhaps last -- chance will come Sunday when the Ravens host the 10-1 49ers. Not only do the 49ers have a physical defense, but they are also fast and athletic on the edge. That will prove an interesting, but hardly insurmountable, challenge for MVP front-runner Lamar Jackson. If they can get past the 49ers, the Ravens have an excellent opportunity to leapfrog the Patriots and grab home-field advantage in the AFC playoffs.

Next up: vs. San Francisco

3. Houston Texans (7-4)

How important was the Texans' comeback victory last Thursday night over the Colts? It returned them to a commanding position in the AFC South and made them a near-lock to at least make the playoffs, all while severely diminishing the Colts' chances to claw back into the race. The Texans now have an 89.7% chance to reach the postseason and a 74.5% chance to win the division. The schedule won't deal them any favors in Week 13, but at least they'll have the Patriots at home.

Next up: vs. New England

4. Kansas City Chiefs (7-4)

In a matter of six days, the Chiefs moved from a virtual tie in the AFC West to an opportunity to all but lock up the division by the end of Week 13. First, they held off the Chargers in Mexico City in Week 11. Then, the Raiders suffered an embarrassing loss Sunday to the Jets. So if the Chiefs can beat the Raiders at home this weekend, they'll complete a season sweep and clinch the head-to-head tiebreaker. In essence, that means they would have a three-game lead in the division with four games left. The likelihood of that scenario gives the Chiefs a 96.8% chance to win the West, per FPI.

Next up: vs. Oakland

5. Buffalo Bills (9-3)

Thursday brought one of the Bills' most meaningful and impressive victories in two decades. After dismantling the division-leading Cowboys on the road in a short week, the Bills showed they are capable of more than just feasting on a weak schedule. And as a result, they are now a near-lock for a wild-card playoff spot. They're even in position to swoop into the AFC East lead if the Patriots falter. The Bills' chance to reach the postseason is now 95%, according to FPI. With one more victory, they'll have their best regular-season record since 1999.

Next up: vs. Baltimore (Week 14)

6. Pittsburgh Steelers (6-5)

There is no problem so big it can't be solved by playing the Bengals. Fresh off their disastrous loss to the Browns, the Steelers did just enough to win in Cincinnati in Week 12. That victory, plus the Raiders' loss to the Jets, pushed the Steelers to the top of a four-team pileup at 6-5. The Steelers have a better conference record than the Raiders and hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Colts. (The Titans would be eliminated from the four-way tie because they lost earlier this season to the Colts.) But there is a long way to go for the Steelers, and FPI predicts only a 30.5% chance to make the playoffs.

Next up: vs. Cleveland

Next four

7. Oakland Raiders (6-5)
8. Indianapolis Colts (6-5)
9. Tennessee Titans (6-5)
10. Cleveland Browns (5-6)

NFC

1. San Francisco 49ers (10-1)

The 49ers put up an awfully impressive start Sunday night to one of the most challenging late-season stretches we've ever seen for a conference leader. They thrashed the Packers at home to keep one step ahead of the Saints (in the NFC) and the Seahawks (in the NFC West). But two taller tasks await: consecutive games at the Ravens and Saints. San Francisco looked very good Sunday night. But could any team make it through that gantlet unscathed? That said, the 49ers can clinch a playoff berth this weekend with a win over the Ravens and a Rams loss at the Cardinals.

Next up: at Baltimore

2. New Orleans Saints (10-2) -- Z

With the NFC South division title claimed, the Saints have their sights set on a bigger goal: earning home-field advantage in the NFC playoffs for the second consecutive season. They could leapfrog the 49ers as early as Week 14. That scenario would require a 49ers loss Sunday in Baltimore -- a reasonable possibility -- and then a Saints victory in the teams' head-to-head matchup Dec. 8. The Saints wouldn't have clinched by that point, but they would be in control of the top spot entering Week 15.

Next up: vs. San Francisco (Week 14)

3. Green Bay Packers (8-3)

Sunday's loss left the Packers clinging by the smallest of margins to the NFC North lead. They have the nominal head-to-head tiebreaker against the Vikings and also a better division record. Even better news: Their schedule eases considerably in the coming weeks with games against the Giants, Redskins and Bears in consecutive weeks. In fact, the only team left with a winning record on their schedule is the Vikings in Week 16.

Next up: at New York Giants

4. Dallas Cowboys (6-6)

The Cowboys are now 0-5 against teams with winning records after losing Thursday to the Bills. But here's the thing: They can still win the NFC East without beating a single team that is currently over .500. If they can defeat the Bears (6-6), Eagles (5-6) and Redskins (2-9), they'll go to the playoffs with a 9-7 record. If not, they'll have to hope that the Eagles can't get their act together and overtake them. All told, FPI is still giving the Cowboys a 64.6% chance to go to the playoffs. As bad as they seemed Thursday, things could be much worse.

Next up: at Chicago (Week 14)

Cowboys' costly turnovers seal Bills' win

Dak Prescott throws an interception and fumbles the ball on back-to-back drives, then throws an incompletion on fourth-and-goal as the Cowboys fall to the Bills 26-15.

5. Seattle Seahawks (9-2)

Sunday's game in Philadelphia carried one of the largest postseason swings in Week 12. Earning a conference victory gave the Seahawks an additional 19.1% chance to make the playoffs; FPI now puts their chances at 95.0%. Now the question is whether they can catch the 49ers. That question might not be answered until Week 17, when the teams meet in Seattle. As long as the Seahawks are within one game of the 49ers at that point, they can overtake them with a victory on the strength of the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Next up: vs. Minnesota

6. Minnesota Vikings (8-3)

The Packers' loss Sunday night put them in a numerical tie with the Vikings in the NFC North. The Packers have a lead in the first two tiebreakers, head-to-head and division record. But the Vikings could render those moot by matching the Packers over the next three games before the teams meet at U.S. Bank Stadium in Week 16. That is easier said than done, of course. The Vikings play in Seattle on Monday night, and the Packers will play at the Giants.

Crusaders keep name despite mosque killings

Published in Rugby
Thursday, 28 November 2019 20:30

New Zealand's most successful rugby side, the Crusaders, have decided to keep their name - after a review that began when 51 people died in the Christchurch mosque attacks.

Concerns had been raised about the association with the medieval religious wars between Christians and Muslims.

The club had already said it was dropping its knight and sword logo.

But the name will remain - with the club saying it stood for crusading for social improvement and inclusiveness.

The club said: "It was decided that no name better represented the club's commitment to living its values - crusading for social improvement and inclusiveness, and crusading with heart for our community and for each other."

At a news conference on Friday, the club also presented a new logo, saying it would seek to "reclaim its meaning through a new brand".

"The imagery we were using, with its nod to Christchurch's English heritage, did not effectively portray the region we represent or who we are as a team," Crusaders chief executive Colin Mansbridge said.

The new logo includes a Maori proverb - "ma pango, ma whero, ka oti te mahi" - meaning "with black, with red, we can achieve". The club will start using it next year.

The Crusaders - who have won the international Super Rugby title a record ten times - adopted their name 23 years ago, when rugby went professional.

They are based in Christchurch and represent the upper part of New Zealand's south island.

But their name and the imagery came under scrutiny after the mosque attacks.

What were the crusades?

The crusades were a series of wars during the Middle Ages when Christian armies tried to recapture sites of the Holy Land from their Muslim rulers.

In 1095, Pope Urban II called for a war to take Jerusalem, leading to the first crusade and high numbers of casualties.

It did capture the Jerusalem and several sites thought to have been locations of biblical stories.

Wars between Christian crusaders and the Muslim rulers of the Middle East continued until the late 13th Century.

Wars in other places, including the Iberian peninsula, were also considered crusades.

On 15 March 2019, a gunman opened fire on Muslims during Friday prayers at the Al Noor mosque and the Linwood Islamic Centre, both located in Christchurch.

Fifty-one people were killed and dozens injured. The trial for the suspect has been set for 4 May next year.

At the time, the club was quick to stress the name was "not a religious statement", but said it would look into possibly changing the name.

It also ended the practice of having sword-wielding knights riding on horseback into the stadium before matches.

Pochettino: I gave Tottenham 'the best of me'

Published in Soccer
Thursday, 28 November 2019 20:53

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino said he had given the Premier League club "the best of me" during a five-and-a-half year tenure which ended with his sacking last week.

The Argentine, who led Spurs to the Champions League final last season, was dismissed after a poor run of results in all competitions this season and replaced by Jose Mourinho who has since guided the team to two wins in two games.

Speaking for the first time since losing his job, Pochettino reflected on "tough challenges" and "exciting success."

"I gave the best of me to accomplish the objectives I was asked for in our first meeting," Pochettino said in a statement released by the League Managers Association. "There were equally tough challenges as exciting success."

"I'd like to thank [owner] Joe Lewis and [chairman] Daniel Levy for giving me the opportunity to be part of Tottenham's history... also everyone I met at Tottenham, club staff and football players during these 5-1/2 years.

"Finally, I'd like to give a special mention to the fans who make this club so great with their fantastic support ... best wishes for the future, I'm sure we'll cross paths again."

Ben Stokes may not be able to bowl in the rest of the second Test against New Zealand after experiencing a recurrence of a knee problem.

Stokes reported pain in his left knee as he completed his second over in Hamilton. While he remained on the field, the England management reported the injury would be assessed before a decision was made over whether he would bowl again in the first innings. There has been no official word of a scan from the England camp, but it would be a surprise if Stokes was not sent for one.

Stokes has long had to manage his left knee. He underwent surgery on it in May 2016 after tearing cartilage while bowling against Sri Lanka and, ahead of the first Test of this series, admitted he was managing it. He was used sparingly compared to his seam-bowling colleagues in that match - he bowled 26 overs compared to Jofra Archer's 42, Sam Curran's 35 and Stuart Broad's 33 - and England named an extra seamer in their second Test team partially as cover for Stokes.

Also read: Latham century drives NZ before rain hits

It may be that his relative lack of mobility contributed to his failure to cling on to a chance offered by Tom Latham on 66. It was not by any means an easy chance but Stokes is probably the best catcher in this England side and will have been disappointed not to hold on. Latham went on to finish the day unbeaten on 101.

Given Stokes' importance to the team and the relative unimportance of the Test - it does not form part of the World Test Championship - it would be a surprise if he was asked to bowl for the remainder of this game.

It would be premature to speculate on his fitness for the South Africa tour. But with the first Test in that series starting on Boxing Day it does not leave a huge amount of time for recovery if the problem is significant. Stokes is travelling to South Africa a few days after the rest of the squad in order to allow him to attend the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year award presentation. Stokes is favourite for the award.

West Indies 277 (Brooks 111, Campbell 55, Hamza 5-74) and 33 for 1 (Campbell 19*, Hamza 1-5) beat Afghanistan 187 (Ahmadi 39, Cornwall 7-75) and 120 (Ahmadi 62, Chase 3-10, Holder 3-20, Cornwall 3-46) by nine wickets

West Indies took just an hour on the third morning to wrap up the one-off Test against Afghanistan, winning by nine wickets in Lucknow.

Resuming the day on 109 for 7 in their second innings - under floodlights due to poor visibility - Afghanistan could last only 7.1 more overs as Jason Holder picked up the remaining three wickets. Rashid Khan fell to Holder's first ball of the day with Shane Dowrich taking a wobbling catch diving to his right.

Next, with Afsar Zazai trying to farm the strike, Holder flattened Yamin Ahmadzai's off stump when he got the opportunity.

In his next over, the West Indies captain dismissed Zazai too as Afghanistan were bowled out for 120. Holder finished with figures of 3 for 20, his unexpected decision to bowl after winning the toss two days ago now just a distant memory.

Set 31 to win, West Indies eased to the victory but not before Amir Hamza got Kraigg Brathwaite caught behind for eight. The Barbados batsman now averages 12.26 in his last ten Tests with a highest score of 49.

For debutant Hamza, it was a good outing personally as he finished with six wickets in the match, apart from hitting 34 from No. 9 in Afghanistan's first innings.

Bills' Beasley: Glad to be on this side in Dallas

Published in Breaking News
Thursday, 28 November 2019 20:07

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Buffalo Bills receiver Cole Beasley swore his first game back in Dallas was not a "revenge game," but he didn't play like it.

The former Cowboys receiver turned in his best game of the season in the Bills' 26-15 victory over Dallas on Thanksgiving Day, catching six passes for a game-high 110 yards and one touchdown in his first game against the team with which he spent his first seven NFL seasons.

Speaking from a locker room he'd never been inside of before Thursday's game, Beasley said his joy stemmed from a happiness with his current team, rather than a disdain for his old one.

"I'm just glad I'm in a place coaches believe in me, teammates believe in me and they give me opportunities to do what I do," he said. "I was telling everybody before the game, I'm just glad I'm on this side while we're here.

"It's been a great experience, and everybody else played their butts off and got win No. 9. That's the most important thing, so I'm just glad to take another step forward."

In his first season in Buffalo, Beasley is on pace for a career-high 847 receiving yards on 73 catches. His projected seven touchdowns and 108 targets would also set career highs.

The former SMU player also went to high school in the Dallas area, and signed a four-year, $29 million deal with the Bills this offseason. It hasn't taken long for him to ingratiate himself with his new teammates.

Beasley was the last one into the Bills' locker room after the game, and his teammates erupted in cheers as soon as he turned the corner.

"I'm just grateful, really, for [Cole] and his mindset, as well, because of what he comes from and what he stands for," Bills coach Sean McDermott said. "He's just one piece but there's a lot of other stories in our locker room of guys like Cole -- that maybe it didn't work out in one place, but it works out in Buffalo.

"That's the culture we're trying to build, where guys come to Buffalo ... and they can become the best version of themselves."

Bills defensive end Shaq Lawson, one of four players left from the previous front-office regime, spoke to the obvious culture change throughout the organization.

"I told people we built different, man, this team too different," Lawson said. "Not high-powered superstars, you know what I'm saying -- we're just built different.

"It feels great to be a part of this. Like I told these guys, I've seen a change since my rookie year -- it was completely different. To see us winning, man, and see the city love us, it feels great. You get the right people and culture change -- it'll change quick. They've got the right people here to do it."

Beasley swapped jerseys with Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott and embraced several AT&T Stadium staff members before and after the game. From his perspective, it's hard to be angry with the past when the present is going so well.

His time with the Bills is proof.

"Man, there's a bond here that I don't think can happen in many places, just with the way it's kind of set up," he said. "I can't explain everything, but we're always together. It's a different kind of brotherhood here, and we're always together. Our kids are together, the coaches, the players -- everything.

"It's really a unique and awesome thing that we have here in Buffalo, and I know my family has loved every bit of it. That's part of why I said I'd play here until the wheels fall off."

Saints first into postseason with win vs. Falcons

Published in Breaking News
Thursday, 28 November 2019 20:44

ATLANTA -- One down, 11 to go.

The New Orleans Saints became the first team to clinch a playoff spot, winning the NFC South on Thanksgiving night and serving up some revenge on the rival Atlanta Falcons for good measure.

The Saints (10-2) beat Atlanta 26-18 just 18 days after their stunning 26-9 loss in the Superdome to these same Falcons (3-9).

The New England Patriots (10-1) and San Francisco 49ers (10-1) could also clinch playoff berths this weekend.

As of now, the Saints are the 15th team to clinch a division title in Week 13 or earlier since the league went to eight divisions in 2002, according to ESPN Stats & Information. Only one of those teams went on to win a Super Bowl, and that team was the 2009 New Orleans Saints.

New Orleans will have a chance to improve its playoff seeding next week, with a critical home date against the 49ers.

The Saints were far from perfect on Thursday, thanks to their latest barrage of penalties and some dropped passes by Jared Cook and Michael Thomas (his first since Week 7 of last season).

The Saints built an early lead thanks to their swiss-army backup quarterback, Taysom Hill, who deflected a punt, caught a 3-yard touchdown pass and ran for a 30-yard score in the first half. Hill's four TD catches this season are more than that of Odell Beckham Jr. and Davante Adams combined, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

Then the Saints' defense closed out the game with a pair of second-half interceptions by rookie defensive tackle Shy Tuttle and rookie safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson and a forced fumble by defensive end Marcus Davenport.

New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees had a quiet night, completing 18 of 30 passes for 184 yards. But his pass to Hill tied him with Tom Brady for second in NFL history with 532 TD passes as they race to break Peyton Manning's record of 539.

Ole Miss falls after WR's urinating dog celebration

Published in Breaking News
Thursday, 28 November 2019 20:25

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Luke Logan missed a 35-yard extra point after Mississippi receiver Elijah Moore was penalized for celebrating a touchdown by crawling and pretending to urinate like a dog, and Mississippi State ended up with a 21-20 victory Thursday night in the 116th Egg Bowl.

Ole Miss (4-8, 2-6 Southeastern Conference) pulled within a point with 4 seconds remaining on Matt Corral's 2-yard pass to Moore, but Logan hooked the extra point after Moore cost the Rebels 15 yards.

"That's not who we are. We've been a disciplined team all year, and so just disappointed that happened," coach Matt Luke said. "That's not who he is. Elijah is a good kid, and he just got caught up in the moment."

The penalty was another in a long line of unsportsmanlike conduct fouls between these two teams in recent years, and oddly not even the first one for pretending to urinate. Luke said he knew that as emotions flared in the annual rivalry game, that type of showboating would need to be avoided.

"Absolutely," Luke said. "We talked about it. We had five penalties. We just wanted to play a clean game. Nothing after the whistles or before the whistles was going to help us win the ballgame."

Mississippi State (6-6, 3-5 Southeastern Conference) beat Ole Miss at home for the first since 2013, possibly saving second-year coach Joe Moorhead's job.

Moorhead was fiery in his defense of the job his staff has done with this team, overcoming a litany of academic suspensions and several injuries to key players.

"To me it was an exclamation point on the narrative that I'm not the right man for this job or this team, or that I can't coach in this league," Moorhead said. "This is my school, my team, and this is my program. They'll have to drag my Yankee ass out of here."

The teams combined for seven sacks and 17 tackles for loss, and Mississippi State won the turnover battle 3-1. The Bulldogs' Erroll Thompson had a game-high 11 tackles, one for a loss, a pass deflection and a forced fumble.

"Erroll's our team captain, you know, and he has the confidence of the team," Moorhead said. "For him to play the way he did, and just the entire defense, it was a great team win."

The Bulldogs scored two first-half touchdowns, the first on Nick Gibson's 27-yard run and the second on the next possession on quarterback Garrett Shrader's 1-yard run. Ole Miss responded with two touchdowns of its own, with J.R. Plumlee scoring on a 2-yard run and Jerrion Ealy on a 5-yarder to tie it at 14 at the half.

Midway through the third quarter, the Bulldogs sacked Plumlee three times on the same drive, the third forcing a fumble. Seven plays later, Shrader scored on a 5-yard run to put Mississippi State up 21-14.

After pulling Plumlee in favor of Corral, Ole Miss had two different red-zone opportunities in the fourth quarter. The other ended with a Marcus Murphy interception.

On the final drive of the game, Mississippi State committed three of its five total penalties and Ole Miss ran nine plays inside the 15 before eventually connecting for the touchdown.

THE TAKEAWAY

Ole Miss: The Rebels are young and continue to show signs of life under Luke, but inconsistent play and the lack of a clear offensive strategy are the biggest reasons they'll be sitting at home this bowl season.

Mississippi State: After a long season that fell well short of expectations, an emotional home win over a hated rival might just be enough to keep Moorhead from losing his job. But maybe not.

Day One: Chengdu Airlines Men’s World Cup Group Stage

Sathiyan wins epic!

Well that certainly was a ride! Sathiyan Gnanasekaran has come back from 0-2 down to win 4-3 (11-13, 9-11, 11-8, 14-12, 7-11, 11-5, 11-8) against Simon Gauzy in a magnificent start to the Men’s World Cup group stages!

In this 1 hour 4 minute epic, Gnanasekaran has certainly shown his immense quality at the table and the grit he has to do what he’s done. Gauzy looked like he was in control early on but the consistent backhand block and return shots from Gnanasekaran have turned this match on its head. More of this, please!

Sangsu secures victory as Sathiyan takes it to a decider

Lee Sangsu managed to wrap up his match with Omar Assar in the fifth game (14-12, 11-9, 11-4, 13-15, 11-6) after the Egyptian gave him a tough battle when he won the fourth game 15-13. It was to be in vain and he will now need to win his next match to have any hopes of reaching the knockout stages.

Frenchman Simon Gauzy and Indian Sathiyan Gnanasekaran are headed to a deciding seventh game after both athletes won another game each in a thrilling early contest here at the Sichuan Gymnasium. Who will get the win?

Sathiyan gets one back – and then another!

Well now things are getting very interesting over at table 2, with Gnanasekaran having levelled up the score to 2-2 after winning two games back to back against Gauzy. The Indian athlete has certainly risen to the occasion here, but can he find the victory?

Over at the other end, Lee Sangsu has a 3-0 (14-12, 11-9, 11-4) lead over Omar Assar with less and less chance for the Egpytian to make a return – unless he can channel Gnanasekaran’s spirit!

Strong starts for Sangsu & Simon

Korea Republic’s Lee Sangsu has taken an early lead in his match against Egypt’s Omar Assar here in Chengdu, on the first day of action. The 10th seed has started well with good shots deep off the table, making life difficult for Assar (14-12).

Meanwhile, Frenchman Simon Gauzy is in total control of his match versus India’s Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, leading by 2-0 (13-11, 11-9) in under 20 minutes. Is there any chance for Gnanasekaran to make a comeback?
