Blues put forward Sundqvist on injured reserve

Published in Hockey
Thursday, 28 November 2019 15:15

The St. Louis Blues have placed forward Oskar Sundqvist on injured reserve with a lower-body injury sustained during the Blues' 4-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday.

Sundqvist, 25, has 12 points (eight goals, four assists) in 26 games this season. The Swedish native was acquired by the Blues from the Pittsburgh Penguins in June 2017.

The Blues recalled forward Austin Poganski from San Antonio of the AHL to fill Sundqvist's roster spot.

Xhaka, Emery 5/10 as struggling Arsenal lose again

Published in Soccer
Thursday, 28 November 2019 14:25

Arsenal were booed off the pitch by a sparsely populated Emirates crowd after relinquishing a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was on hand to tuck away a Gabriel Martinelli cross to put the Gunners ahead in first-half stoppage time, but two excellent Daichi Kamada goals in nine second-half minutes completed an excellent turnaround for the Germans.

Positives

It's difficult to pick something out in what was a poor Arsenal display, but Granit Xhaka's return to the first-team fold following his run-in with the Emirates crowd last month will give the midfield some form of closure.

Negatives

Inconsistency reared its ugly head once again for Unai Emery's side in what was a real Jekyll & Hyde performance: A complete stroll in the park in the first half, followed by a feeble surrender in the second.

Manager rating out of 10

5 -- Emery can't buy a result at the moment, and the Spaniard was unable to muster a meaningful response to Frankfurt's fearless second-half fightback.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Emiliano Martinez, 6 -- A complete bystander in a first half that Arsenal dominated, but could do nothing about either of Kamada's precisely-arrowed strikes as the visitors rallied after the break.

DF Calum Chambers, 6 -- Got forward well on the overlap and defended solidly in the first half, before facing a tough examination from the dangerous Filip Kostic in the second period.

DF Shkodran Mustafi, 6 -- The German can't get a look-in on the Premier League scene, but comfortably looked the more assured of Arsenal's central defensive pairing. Booked for chopping down Eintracht striker Goncalo Paciencia, and will miss the away trip to Standard Liege in a fortnight.

DF Sokratis Papastathopoulos, 5 -- Caught defending too square against Frankfurt goal scorer Kamada, allowing the Japanese midfielder to work some space on the edge of the box and fire home an excellent equaliser.

DF Kieran Tierney, 6 -- The former Celtic man had a couple of nervy moments in the opening half-hour, but recovered to make some smart interceptions. Gunners fans would probably like to see more of the full-back going forward, though.

DF David Luiz, 6 -- The Brazilian only lasted half an hour in the holding midfield role, before coming off with what looked like a rib injury, and was replaced by Matteo Guendouzi.

MF Granit Xhaka, 5 -- It was a disappointing return to the side following a five-game hiatus, and it was a scruffy performance from the Swiss international, who looked a touch rusty. Booked in the closing stages for dissent.

MF Joe Willock, 5 -- If you're going to get in the way of Aubameyang as the striker looked set to head home, just make sure you score yourself. He didn't -- and that wasn't the only time he should've scored.

FW Gabriel Martinelli, 7 -- Fired an instinctive volley straight at goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow from six yards out after 15 minutes, before having a glancing header cleared off the line from the resulting corner. The Brazilian's drilled cross fell to Aubameyang to drill home the opener and he was replaced in the second half by Mesut Ozil.

FW Bukayo Saka, 6 -- Showed great pace to get on the end of an Aubameyang through ball just before the half-hour, but clipped his strike straight at Ronnow in the Eintracht goal. Started the move for Arsenal's opener with some neat footwork.

FW Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, 6 -- Made no mistake with his only clear sight on goal in first-half stoppage time, with his shot carrying just about enough zip to beat Ronnow and cannon home off the crossbar.

Substitutes

MF Matteo Guendouzi, 6 -- Certainly gives the Arsenal midfield something extra, but will be disappointed he couldn't block Kamada's second. Booked late on for a mistimed tackle.

MF Mesut Ozil, 6 -- Didn't see enough of the ball to haul his side back into the game.

MF Lucas Torreira, N/R -- Came on for the final 15 minutes following an injury to Mustafi, but couldn't make an impact.

England won the toss and chose to bowl first against New Zealand

Zak Crawley has been handed a Test debut for the second Test in Hamilton, with Ollie Pope taking over as wicketkeeper, after Jos Buttler failed to recover from the back strain that he suffered in the gym in the build-up to the match.

It will be Pope's turn to embrace his new role before Crawley's, after Joe Root won the toss and chose to bowl first. "There's quite a lot of live grass and history suggests we'll get the most out of it on the first day," was Root's reasoning, particularly as he has gone into the match with a five-man seam attack.

That is because Chris Woakes has been recalled to their ranks as an extra seamer in place of the spinner Jack Leach, who was out-bowled by his counterpart Mitchell Santner in the first Test, but who can still consider himself unlucky. His omission perhaps has something to do with the extra batting prowess that Woakes brings in Buttler's absence - Leach's Headingley heroics notwithstanding.

"We are still trying to find 20 wickets, and on a surface like this it's a good opportunity to try something different," said Root. "It's pretty simple what we need to improve on, and now it's about putting our heart and soul into these five days."

For New Zealand, Daryl Mitchell makes his Test debut as a like-for-like replacement for the injured Colin de Grandhomme, who was a major factor in the first Test win, while Matt Henry has leapfrogged Lockie Ferguson into the starting XI after Trent Boult suffered a side strain.

The pitch, which had looked pretty green in the build-up to the Test, has mellowed to a more true-looking yellow surface, albeit with 16mm of grass still on the surface, and there is the prospect of rain in the air in the afternoon

"There are a few unknowns," said Kane Williamson, New Zealand's captain. "It's a pretty good surface, we'll have to see how it handles."

Crawley's call-up was confirmed when he received his cap from his Kent team-mate Joe Denly shortly before the toss, and added a further sheen of disarray to England's attempts to recover from last week's thumping defeat in the first Test at Mount Maunganui.

Speaking on the eve of the match, England's assistant coach had backed Crawley to succeed at Test level, having impressed the management with his application in the course of the tour, and with a century in his solitary warm-up outing of the tour.

"Technically he looks very strong," Collingwood said. "He's willing to learn all the time. He's been brilliant in the conversations that we've had in the nets. He's always questioning things and that's what you want.

"He's good fun, he's a good athlete in the field as well, so he ticks a lot of the right boxes. He looks very good. But you never know until you get in the pressure of a Test match situation. The signs are really good, though."

Source: Cowboys won't fire Garrett during season

Published in Breaking News
Thursday, 28 November 2019 13:30

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones and executive vice president Stephen Jones will allow Jason Garrett to finish the season as the team's head coach -- no matter what, a high-ranking source familiar with their thinking told ESPN on Thursday.

That is the plan even though Jones has been publicly critical of Garrett and the coaching staff since the team's 13-9 loss to the New England Patriots in Foxboro on Sunday. That is unusual for Jones, who has been Garrett's most ardent supporter throughout his career. Garrett is in the final year of his contract.

The Cowboys failed to score a touchdown on offense, created no turnovers on defense and allowed a blocked punt that set up the game's only touchdown.

"I don't think there's a game that a coaching staff has ... that it couldn't do better in," Jones said after Sunday's game. "I just don't like it that we've got so many as I'm standing here tonight."

Jones told 105.3 The Fan in Dallas that he hoped his criticism would inspire the team.

"The dream is that something that I might have said might have caused us to do something that made a difference," Jones said before Thursday's game against the Bills. "That's not the way it works, I'll tell you that right now. But Jason has tremendous respect of the players on this football team. I'll assure you that you won't find somebody that knows how to do all of the things a head coach has to do better than Jason Garrett ... I've said this: To have the perfect picture, we just need to get him a Super Bowl, then we'll settle up."

Regardless of what happens for the Cowboys heading into Thursday's game or Sunday when the Eagles play the Dolphins, Dallas is assured of being no worse than tied for the NFC East lead heading into Week 14.

The Cowboys are 6-5 but have yet to defeat any opponent with a winning record. Garrett's team is 0-4 in games decided by four or fewer points.

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Buffalo Bills captured all of the game's momentum late in the first half of Thursday's game against the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium.

After forcing turnovers on back-to-back Cowboys possessions, Buffalo converted on fourth-and-1 when quarterback Josh Allen fumbled the snap, recovered it and dove over the pile for a first down. On the next play, Allen took the snap and handed it off to wide receiver Andre Roberts, who tossed it to John Brown on the double-reverse. Brown lofted the ball to a wide open Devin Singletary 28 yards down field for the touchdown, giving Buffalo a 13-7 lead.

According to Elias, Brown is the first non-quarterback to throw a pass TD on Thanksgiving Day since Dan Reeves with the Cowboys on Nov. 23, 1967 -- it was a 74-yard TD pass to Lance Rentzel.

Earlier in the second quarter, receiver Cole Beasley checked off one of the "revenge game" boxes, scoring a touchdown against his former team on national television.

The former Cowboys player (seven seasons) took a pass from Bills quarterback Allen 25 yards to the end zone midway through the second quarter, which tied the game at 7-7 after a Stephen Hauschka extra point. Lined up in the slot, Beasley found space between Cowboys linebacker Jaylon Smith and safety Xavier Woods, bringing his total to a game-high 54 yards on four catches. He converted a third down earlier in the game with a 29-yard reception.

It marked Beasley's fifth touchdown catch of the season, tying the career-high he set in 2015 and 2016. All five of his scores this season have come since Week 7, putting him behind only Lions receiver Marvin Jones for most in the NFL in that span.

Irving to miss Friday's home game vs. Celtics

Published in Basketball
Thursday, 28 November 2019 15:48

Kyrie Irving will miss Friday's game against the Boston Celtics in Brooklyn, the Nets announced Thursday, the eighth game Irving has missed due to a right shoulder impingement.

Irving did not make the Nets' most recent road-trip, including a game in Boston on Wednesday night. His absence was noted by fans in TD Garden, who booed and sported signs denouncing the former Celtics star.

"It happens all the time and Tonight just shows how Sports/Entertainment will always be ignorant and obtrusive," Irving said at the start of a lengthy post via an Instagram story after Wednesday's game. "It's one big SHOW that means Very VERY little in the real world that most people live in because there are Actually things that matter going on within it."

In the fall of 2018, Irving told an arena full of Celtics fans that he intended to re-sign with Boston during his 2019 free agency. Instead, he chose the Nets alongside Kevin Durant and DeAndre Jordan.

After Boston, the Nets host the Miami Heat on Sunday and travel to Atlanta for a game on Wednesday night.

The Men’s World Cup forms part of the Grand Slam trio of titles, alongside the Olympic Games and World Championships. Whoever celebrates this Sunday will have to navigate their way past a highly competitive field of talent, stretching the entire globe.

That is because the all-star event features a series of former Men’s World Cup winners: reigning world champion, Ma Long of China (Men’s World Cup winner in 2012 & 2015), world no. 1, Fan Zhendong of China (2016, 2018), Timo Boll of Germany (2002, 2005), Dimitrij Ovtcharov of Germany (2017) and Vladimir Samsonov of Belarus (1999, 2001, 2009).

While Fan Zhendong and Ovtcharov qualified as Asian and Europe Cup champions respectively, the Men’s World Cup also features Africa Cup champion, Omar Assar (Egypt), Pan American Cup champion Hugo Calderano (Brazil) and Oceania Cup champion Heming Hu (Australia), as well as a whole host of household names, who also qualified via their Continental Cups, plus wild card Mattias Falck (Sweden), whose highlight of the year was undoubtedly his silver medal at the 2019 World Table Tennis Championships.

Let the group stage begin!

Friday 29th November is dedicated to the group stage, where the players seeded 9th to 20th play off against one another in a bid to reach the weekend’s knockout rounds.

The top two players from each group will qualify for the main draw, where they will be pitted against the 1st to 8th seeds.

Let’s take a look at the groups in detail:

Group A: European extravaganza

The highest seeded player involved in group action, Dimitrij Ovtcharov has been handed a difficult draw. The German world no. 12 faces Belarussian legend Vladimir Samsonov and Men’s World Cup debut maker, Austria’s Daniel Habesohn, thus providing an all-European affair.

Undeniably the standout match sees Ovtcharov and Samsonov meet in a clash of former Men’s World Cup champions. Meanwhile, Habesohn booked his Men’s World Cup ticket following a noteworthy fourth position finish at the Europe Top 16 Cup competition in February.

“I think it’s quite unlucky, I’m drawn into the hardest group. Obviously it’s my first Men’s World Cup appearance. With a group like this, it’s hard for me, but I’ll try my best and see.” – Daniel Habesohn

Group B: An opportunity for revenge

Meeting face-to-face at exactly the same stage in 2017, Korea Republic’s Lee Sangsu and fast-rising United States prodigy Kanak Jha have been placed in the same group. Egypt’s Omar Assar, the 2019 Africa Cup champion, completes the line-up.

Seeded 10th in Chengdu, Lee heads into Friday’s action as favourite to progress from the group and will draw heart from his victory over Jha at the 2017 event. On the flip side, Jha will be out for revenge this time and is looking to reach the round of 16 for the second year running. Meanwhile, the powerful Assar is searching to return to the main draw for the first time since 2015.

Group C: Group of unpredictability

A late addition to the roster following the withdrawal through injury of Hong Kong China’s Wong Chun Ting, the dynamic Quadri Aruna is keen to make his presence felt on his sixth Men’s World Cup appearance. The Nigerian will meet Sweden’s 2016 Men’s World Cup semi-finalist Kristian Karlsson and Australia’s Heming Hu.

Eliminated in round one last year in Disneyland Paris, Aruna will be hoping to avoid the same fate in Chengdu but is faced with an air of uncertainty. Only on one prior occasion has Aruna faced Karlsson at an international ranking competition and that was on the ITTF World Tour in Poland; Aruna won in straight games. Hu has never been involved in a head-to-head with either player on the international scene.

Group D: Three G’s fighting over two qualification places

Simon Gauzy, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, Jonathan Groth. Otherwise known as the “three G’s.” Frenchman Gauzy is the highest seeded player in the group while India’s Gnanasekaran and Denmark’s Groth occupy the two remaining spots.

Finishing fourth at the 2017 edition of the event, Gauzy knows the secret ingredient when it comes to enjoying a successful campaign on the Men’s World Cup stage, but he’ll need to be at his best right from the start.

The first Indian player to reach the quarter-finals stage of an ITTF Asian Cup, Gnanasekaran will be desperate to impress on his Men’s World Cup debut, while Groth knows how to negotiate group-stage action, having reached the round of 16 last year.

“I’m a little bit anxious, but I will calm down and prepare with my coach. We’ll work on strategy, give our best, and you can’t control the results. I’m here to have fun and really give my all.” – Sathiyan Gnanasekaran

The 15 year old accounted for Nigeria’s Emmanuel Augustine (11-2, 11-8, 9-11, 11-6, 11-8) and Peru’s Jhon Loli (11-2, 11-8, 9-11, 11-6, 11-8) to end the day the one unbeaten player from India in the group stage of the boys’ singles event.

Colleagues Anukram Jain, Deepit Patil and Raegan Alburquerque all experienced defeats, he now faces Belgium’s Adrien Rassenfosse to determine first place in the group.

A measure

Thoughts of a medal are somewhat distant, the tournament is a test, the contest against Adrien Rassenfosse is a measure to determine the progress of the 15 year old. Notably, in the first week of September he impressed at the Asian Junior and Cadet Championships in Ulaanbaator. In illustrious company he reached the final of the cadet boys’ singles event, losing to China’s Chen Yuanyu.

Notably Payas Jain played Adrien Rassenfosse some three years ago at the 2019 Belgium Junior and Cadet Open; he lost in four games. Much water has flowed under the bridge since those times, Payas Jain and the one year older Adrien Rassenfosse are both at ages when improvement can be made at a quite rapid rate.

Diya Parag Chitale

Likewise, in the group stage of the junior girls’ singles event, colleague Diya Parag Chitale impressed, she accounted for Hong Kong’s Ng Wing Lam (7-11, 11-9, 11-8, 12-10, 9-11, 11-7), prior to accounting for Nigeria’s Sukurat Aiyelbegan (11-6, 11-9, 11-8, 11-8).

She now faces exactly the same scenario as Payas Jain. She opposes the highest rated player in the group and a player of a similar age to determine first place and progress to the main draw. She confronts Rachel Sung of the United States; Diya Parag Chitale is 16 years of age, Rachel Sung is one year younger.

Places in the main draw for India; hard fought contests await but one place is assured, Swastika Ghosh is the no.5 seed and received a direct entry.

Tom Watson's wife, Hilary, passes away after fight with cancer

Thursday, 28 November 2019 06:30

Hilary Watson, wife of eight-time major champion Tom Watson, lost her battle with pancreatic cancer and passed away Wednesday at age 63.

Hilary was diagnosed in October 2017 and went through numerous rounds of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. In May 2018, Hilary went through an extensive surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and was soon deemed cancer-free. However, the cancer returned shortly after, as did the rigorous treatment process.

The Watsons flew back to their home in Stillwell, Kansas to put Hilary in hospice, where she remained until she passed just before midnight Thanksgiving Day.

The family will hold a memorial service Dec. 4 in Leawood, Kansas at United Methodist Church of the Resurrection. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be given to the Children's Bereavement Camp of Crossroads Hospice Kansas or to United Methodist Church of the Resurrection.
