Wrexham boost promotion hopes with 1-0 win

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 22 March 2025 11:32

Wrexham made progress in their hunt for automatic promotion from League One on Saturday as they moved into second place with a 1-0 win over 10-man Stockport County.

Wrexham are bidding for a remarkable third straight promotion this season, and Jay Rodríguez's first-half strike was enough to earn all three points and keep up the fight for a place in the Championship.

The Welsh side were awarded a penalty before the half-hour mark after Ibou Touray was penalised for a handball. Rodriguez stepped up to take the penalty and saw his attempt saved by goalkeeper Corey Addai, although the forward netted the rebound -- his first goal for the club since joining in January.

Stockport pushed for an equaliser, almost coming when a Callum Connolly header forced Wrexham's Arthur Okonkwo into a superb save, but couldn't find it. Things went from bad to worse for Stockport when Brad Hills was shown a second yellow card on 81 minutes.

Wrexham face a near-impossible task to reel in leaders Birmingham City, who are nine points clear with two games in hand. Their best chance of promotion will be through finishing second.

Wycombe Wanderers, who are in third place, are three points behind Wrexham with a game in hand.

Royals acquire veteran OF Canha from Brewers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Royals confirmed Saturday they have acquired outfielder Mark Canha from the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Royals will send a player to be named later or cash to the Brewers for Canha, 36.

Canha, who can also play first base, was with the Brewers on a minor league deal and had the right to opt out of his contract on Saturday. He was 2-for-23 with one homer this spring.

Canha made his major league debut with Oakland in 2015, his first of seven seasons with the A's. He has also played for the New York Mets, Detroit and San Francisco. He has a .249 career batting average with 120 homers, including a career-high 26 with Oakland in 2019.

Canha played a combined 125 games with Detroit and San Francisco in 2024 and hit .242 with seven homers.

Tigers clear way for prospect Jobe to join rotation

Published in Baseball

The Detroit Tigers cleared the path for top prospect Jackson Jobe to open the season in the rotation when they optioned right-handed pitcher Keider Montero to Triple-A Toledo on Saturday.

Jobe is expected to join American League Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal, Jack Flaherty, Reese Olson and Casey Mize in the rotation when Detroit opens the season at the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday.

Jobe, who is from Oklahoma City, was selected third overall out of high school in the 2021 amateur draft by the Tigers and is regarded as one of the top prospects in baseball. The right-hander has posted a 3.65 ERA in four spring training games.

Jobe made his major league debut late last season when he was called up during the Tigers' playoff push. He threw a combined four scoreless innings, giving up only one hit, in two relief appearances.

The Tigers also optioned infielder Ryan Kreidler to Toledo.

Detroit manager A.J. Hinch did not have as positive an update on center fielder Parker Meadows. Meadows will not be allowed to throw a ball for at least four more weeks as he continues to recover from a nerve issue in his throwing shoulder.

"There's no damage to the nerve, which is encouraging," Hinch said. "But not all appointments come with great news. It's also not firing at the level that we need to advance."

Hinch said Meadows can participate in baseball activities that don't include throwing.

"He's not shut down from anything else," Hinch said. "It's strictly about the throwing."

Meadows, 25, was injured in the Tigers' first spring training game on Feb. 22. He played in 82 games last season for Detroit, batting .244 with nine home runs and 28 RBIs.

Information from The Associated Press and Field Level Media was used in this report.

NYY's Schmidt set for IL, Carrasco makes roster

Published in Baseball
Saturday, 22 March 2025 12:26

TAMPA -- New York Yankees right-hander Clarke Schmidt will begin the season on the injured list after being slowed by a shoulder injury this spring, general manager Brian Cashman announced Saturday, opening the door for Carlos Carrasco to make the team as a non-roster invite to spring training.

Schmidt is the third member of the Yankees' projected starting rotation that will be unavailable when the team breaks camp for opening day on Thursday, joining Gerrit Cole (elbow) and Luis Gil (lat). Cole is out for season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Gil will miss at least the season's first two months.

On the other hand, the 29-year-old Schmidt, who had a 2.85 ERA in 16 starts last season, should not miss ample time. A minor shoulder injury surfaced earlier this month, knocking him off track to build up the necessary pitch count, but he has said he is healthy.

He's appeared in just one game this spring, throwing 38 pitches over 1 innings. He threw 32 pitches across two innings of live batting practice Thursday. The Yankees want him to be built up to 70 to 80 pitches before starting a game in the regular season.

"He just hasn't had a spring training yet," Cashman said. "He's certainly going in the right direction."

The 38-year-old right-hander, a cancer survivor, has tallied a 6.18 ERA in 41 starts over the last two seasons, but he has impressed the club in his five outings this spring, compiling a 1.69 ERA across 16 innings.

"He's had a good camp and obviously he's earned the right to come north with us," Cashman said.

Rookie Will Warren is the likely choice for the final vacant spot in the Yankees' rotation, but Cashman declined to say whether the former top prospect will be on the roster.

Warren, 25, struggled in his first taste of the majors last season, giving up 27 runs (26 earned) in 22 innings over six games (five starts). But the team has been encouraged by his performance this spring; Warren has a 4.19 ERA in 19 innings across six outings.

Cashman also announced right-handed reliever Ian Hamilton will also start the season on the injured list. Hamilton, 29, made his Grapefruit League debut Thursday, giving up a run on three hits in one inning, after being sidelined with an infection.

Ex-cop Brown wins women's featherweight belt

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 22 March 2025 09:50

SYDNEY -- Former police officer Tiara Brown became WBC world featherweight champion by beating Skye Nicolson in a split-decision victory Saturday.

Brown, 36, took Nicolson's belt when judges scored the bout 97-93 and 96-94 in her favor, with one judge scoring it 96-94 for Nicolson.

Brown (19-0) dropped to the canvas in tears when she was announced as the winner. It was the first professional loss for Nicolson (12-1), an Australian.

Brown had been an officer both in the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C., and more recently for the Fort Myers Police Department in her native Florida.

The Fort Myers PD had wished Brown good luck ahead of the 10-round bout, saying on Instagram that she "has always been a fighter -- both in and out of the ring."

Brown is a boxing coach with the Fort Myers police athletic league.

Speaking ringside to broadcaster DAZN, Brown gave a shoutout to God and her hometown of Fort Myers and said it's been "20-plus years of wanting this moment."

The new champion said she's not focused yet on her next bout.

"I like my options, my options are good, [but] right now I just want to go home and eat some cupcakes and some cookies and watch some cartoons," Brown said.

After two jam-packed days of college basketball, it's time to start the second round. The field has been cut in half, the contenders have emerged -- and we get to do it all again today.

The schedule is headlined by Arkansas vs. St. John's, a matchup of two Hall of Fame coaches in Rick Pitino and John Calipari, in the afternoon. Elsewhere, the Houston Cougars take on the red-hot Gonzaga Bulldogs, while the McNeese Cowboys -- at 12, the lowest seed still alive -- take on Purdue.

We've got you covered with all the action right here, featuring updates from writers at every site and analysis on what each final result means.

Vintage Ford is genuine Lions contender - Sanderson

Published in Rugby
Saturday, 22 March 2025 06:08

Ford's 25-minute spell at the Principality Stadium was his only rugby of the Six Nations, but he set up two of England's four tries while he was on the field.

Then he took the form with him to Kingston Park in a player-of-the-match display described as a "masterclass" by former Scotland full-back Hugo Southwell, who was on co-commentary duty for TNT Sports.

Ford was orchestrating his team-mates, he had a kicking percentage of 86%, while he provided the highlight of the match with a gorgeous cross kick for Joe Carpenter to slide down on to score, as a sign of a player at the top of his powers.

Ford now has 99 England caps, but despite over a decade of international experience, he has never made a Lions squad.

Although he has had the two Smiths, Northampton's Fin and Marcus of Harlequins, ahead of him in the England pecking order, Lions selection is different.

It is expected that Scotland's Finn Russell will be one of the number 10s selected, so the question will be who Farrell picks to complement the Bath player.

Both Smiths will come into the equation to make it onto the plane along with Ireland duo Rory Prendergast and Jack Crowley.
