Sources: Winston joining Giants for 2 years, $8M

Published in Breaking News
Friday, 21 March 2025 18:25

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Free agent quarterback Jameis Winston announced Friday that he has agreed to sign with the New York Giants.

The deal is for two years and $8 million, sources told ESPN, confirming a report by Fox Sports.

"Start spreading the neWs," Winston posted on his X account Friday, confirming his excitement over his new football home with an apple emoji.

The signing comes after weeks of the Giants flirting with Aaron Rodgers and missing out on Matthew Stafford, who remained with the Los Angeles Rams on a new contract. Rodgers visited with the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier Friday, hours before New York pivoted to Winston.

It was starting to seem in recent days as if the Giants were a long shot for Rodgers, the former three-time MVP. Winston gives them a quarterback capable of starting who can also serve as a mentor to a young quarterback from the draft.

New York is still expected to add to its quarterback room this offseason despite the addition of Winston. It still needs a young quarterback, who is most likely to come in the draft. The Giants currently hold the No. 3 pick.

Co-owner John Mara said earlier this year that finding the team's quarterback of the future was the No. 1 priority this offseason. Winston and Tommy DeVito are the only two quarterbacks currently on the Giants' roster.

Winston, 31, visited with the Giants earlier in the week. This came on the heels of Joe Flacco and Russell Wilson coming to New Jersey the previous week.

Winston began the 2024 season as the backup to Deshaun Watson but took over as the Cleveland Browns' starter after Watson's season-ending right Achilles tendon tear in Week 7.

He helped spark a Browns offense that failed to reach 20 points in any of Watson's starts. Winston engineered upset victories over the Baltimore Ravens and Steelers, and he threw for a franchise-record 497 yards in a Week 13 loss to the Denver Broncos.

Winston, though, was benched in Week 16 after throwing eight interceptions in a span of three games. The Browns were 2-5 in games that Winston started. Winston finished the year completing 61.1% of his passes for 2,121 yards, 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, while also running for one score.

While working as a media correspondent at the Super Bowl, Winston asked Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley where he should sign. Barkley told him New York.

Winston later expressed his interest in the Giants.

"Would I really sign with the Giants? Absolutely!" Winston told NJ Advance Media at the time. "I want to keep playing and do what I do best."

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Winston entered the NFL as the No. 1 pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015. After five seasons in Tampa Bay, Winston spent four seasons with the New Orleans Saints before signing with Cleveland last offseason.

In his 10-year career, Winston has appeared in 105 games with 87 starts. He has completed 61.2% of his passes for 24,225 yards, 154 touchdowns and 111 interceptions.

Two-time heavyweight champ Foreman dies at 76

Published in Breaking News
Friday, 21 March 2025 20:42

"Big" George Foreman, one of the most influential and recognizable boxers of all time, died Friday, his family announced on his social media account.

He was 76.

Foreman, who captured an Olympic gold medal in 1968, was a two-time heavyweight champion and Hall of Fame boxer.

He's perhaps best known for the historic Rumble in the Jungle bout with Muhammad Ali in 1974 in Zaire, a fight Foreman lost in an upset via eighth-round KO. It's arguably the most famous fight of all time and the "When We Were Kings" documentary that chronicled the fight won an Oscar for best picture.

Foreman, of course, made history yet again later on in his career. He fought five more times after he lost the heavyweight championship to Ali at age 25, including another fifth-round TKO victory over Joe Frazier (whom he stopped in two rounds to first win the title) and a fifth-round KO of Ron Lyle in a classic.

After that fifth fight at 28, Foreman shockingly announced his retirement and began a career as an ordained minister in his native Texas.

Foreman was retired for 10 years. He returned in 1987 at age 38. And he went on to mount arguably the most-impressive sports comeback ever.

At first, Foreman padded his record with easy KO wins. One of them was a KO-2 of Gerry Cooney. But then, in 1991, Foreman proved this comeback was for real when he pushed the great Evander Holyfield to the brink in a classic heavyweight title fight at age 42. Though he was unsuccessful in his bid to become a two-time heavyweight champion, Foreman was undeterred.

Five fights later, following a loss to Tommy Morrison, Foreman accomplished the unthinkable.

Down on the scorecards, Foreman landed a two-punch combination that laid Michael Moorer down for the count of 10 in 1994. At age 45 and 299 days, Foreman was the unified heavyweight champion of the world, the oldest man in history to hold boxing's greatest prize (and also the oldest champion ever, a record that stood for 20 years).

"It happened," Jim Lampley called on the HBO broadcast. "It happened!"

Foreman went on to have a successful career alongside Lampley as an HBO boxing analyst. But his greatest success following his in-ring career was yet to come.

The same year Foreman defeated, he launched his eponymous grill. He went on to sell more than 100 million grills worldwide.

In 1999, he sold the commercial rights to the George Foreman grill for $138 million.

Foreman's final fight came in November 1997, a majority-decision loss to Shannon Briggs.

He held his role with HBO as a ringside analyst for 12 years, ending in 2004.

The Ring named Foreman the ninth-greatest puncher of all time and in 2002, one of the top 25 best boxers of the past 80 years.

In a statement, Top Rank called Foreman "one of the biggest punchers and personalities the sport as ever seen."

"George was a great friend to not only myself but to my entire family," Top Rank chairman Bob Arum said. "We've lost a family member and are absolutely devastated."

Celtics' Brown out at least 2 games due to knee

Published in Basketball
Friday, 21 March 2025 19:25

The Boston Celtics said Friday that All-Star forward Jaylen Brown will miss at least two games after he was diagnosed with a bone bruise with posterior impingement in his right knee.

Brown sat out Friday night's game against the Utah Jazz and will miss Sunday's matchup against the Portland Trail Blazers. The Jazz game in Salt Lake City was the start of a six-game road trip for the reigning NBA champions.

Brown will be reevaluated Monday, the team said.

Boston (50-19) entered Friday firmly in second place in the Eastern Conference, six games behind the first-place Cleveland Cavaliers and seven ahead of the third-place New York Knicks.

Brown is averaging 22.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and 4.7 assists this season, playing in 56 of the Celtics' 69 games.

O's reinforce rotation, sign Gibson to 1-year deal

Published in Baseball
Friday, 21 March 2025 20:28

The Baltimore Orioles signed right-hander Kyle Gibson to a one-year contract Friday, the club announced, reuniting with the veteran to reinforce their rotation less than a week from Opening Day.

The deal is worth $5.25 million with $1.525 million more in possible incentives, a source told ESPN.

Gibson, 37, returns to the Orioles after being a reliable option in 2023 for their upstart 101-win club. He went 15-9 with a 4.73 ERA in 33 outings that season as the Orioles won the American League East for the first time since 2014 and reached the postseason for the first time in seven years.

This time, Gibson joins a roster -- highlighted by a talented young core of position players --- with lofty preseason expectations. The rotation is, on paper, the team's weak link.

Corbin Burnes left in free agency over the winter after posting a 2.92 ERA in 32 starts and finishing fifth in AL Cy Young voting in his only season with the Orioles. The team didn't acquire an ace to replace him, instead signing Charlie Morton, 41, and Tomoyuki Sugano, 35, to one-year deals for a combined $28 million.

The rotation took another hit earlier this month when Grayson Rodriguez, the team's anticipated No. 1 starter, was shut down because of elbow inflammation. He will start the season on the injured list.

Gibson does not project as a No. 1 starter, but he should provide stability. A first-round pick in 2009, Gibson has made at least 25 starts in each of his 10 full major league seasons -- and at least 29 starts in nine of the 10.

He went 8-8 with a 4.24 ERA in 30 outings for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2024, finishing the year with 169 innings pitched. Meanwhile, besides Burnes, the Orioles didn't have a pitcher log more than 133 innings.

Djokovic cruises into third round at Miami Open

Published in Tennis
Friday, 21 March 2025 15:47

However, in his first match in Miami since 2019, the 37-year-old showed no signs of being distracted as Hijikata was swiftly swatted aside.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion broke in the second game of the match and never looked back, winning the first set to love in 28 minutes.

It was more of a contest in the second, but Djokovic dominated in the tie-break to move a step closer to a seventh Miami Open title.

"I was playing really well, I mean on a very high level from the beginning, I knew exactly what I wanted to do tactically," he said.

"Obviously it's just the first match but the way I felt on the court and the way I played is really encouraging."

Raducanu 'scraps' in Miami to earn best win of season

Published in Tennis
Friday, 21 March 2025 14:25

Raducanu continues to be without a full-time coach after she ended a short-lived trial with Slovakian Vladimir Platenik earlier this week.

Against Navarro, she had Mark Petchey - a well-known figure in British tennis circles who worked with her as a teenager - offering coaching advice from her box.

Raducanu's representatives described Petchey as a "familiar face" who was providing "support".

It is not clear, though, how long the arrangement will go on for.

Petchey, 54, also coached Andy Murray in the early part of the three-time major champion's professional career, before becoming a prominent television commentator and analyst.

He watched the match against Navarro alongside Raducanu's team, which consists of long-time ally Jane O'Donoghue and fitness trainer Yutaka Nakamura in Florida.

"I came here with someone and it didn't work out, but we put in some great work," said Raducanu, who plays 48th-ranked American McCartney Kessler in the last 32.

"I have good friends here with me, who know my game and know me so well - it's about trusting your gut and trusting your feeling.

"I think that's how I got through to be honest."

Déjà Vu For Menard
For the second year in a row, Paul Menard kicked off the season with a victory, driving to GYM WEED Winners Circle in his No. 3 Pittsburgh Paints/Menards Ford Mustang at Sebring International Raceway. After winning the season opener in 2024, Menard went on the claim the TA championship on the strength of six wins and nine podium finishes.

Another Tough Start For Dyson
Another driver experiencing déjà vu is three-time TA champion Chris Dyson (No. 16 GYM WEED Ford Mustang). Once again, Dyson unloaded a fast car at Sebring, but his day ended in a hard crash due to a mechanical failure. Relegated to an eighth-place finish in class, Dysons pursuit of his fourth Trans Am title begins with a points deficit, as he currently sits 33 markers behind leader Paul Menard. However, given his dominance in the series since his first title season in 2021, its nothing that Dyson cant overcome between now and the season finale at Circuit of The Americas.

Drissi Hoping for Another Podium at Road Atlanta
Road Atlanta is a track where Tomy Drissi (No. 8 Trench Shoring Co./Motul Chevrolet Camaro) has found lots of success in the past in Trans Am and beyond. Drissi scored podium finishes at the Braselton, Ga. facility in four of the last six years in TA, with finishes of second in 2019, 2020 and 2022, and a third-place finish in 2023. Drissi also found his way to the Road Atlanta podium many times in IMSAs WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, earning a victory in the Petit Le Mans in 2017, as well as earning two second-place finishes and one third-place result. Joining Drissi under the Drissi Motorsports banner this weekend is Keith Grant (No. 7 Trench Shoring Co./Motul Chevrolet Camaro), who earned a podium for the team there last year with a third-place finish.

Burtin Hosts CCYA Guests
This weekend at Road Atlanta, Burtin Racing team owner Claudio Burtin, who fields the No. 17 Top Liner Chevrolet Camaro for Adam Andretti, will be hosting approximately 40 guests from the Center for Children and Young Adults (CCYA). CCYA is a 40-bed residential facility in Marietta, Ga. that provides safe housing and basic needs to children and young adults who have been abused, neglected, exploited or abandoned. The organization offers a full array of supportive housing services, such as emergency and temporary shelter programs and transitional and independent living for youth and young adults. CCYA feeds, houses, teaches and nurtures up to 100 youth each year. For more information, visit ccyakids.org.

Crews Wins Between Races
Since kicking off his first full-time season in the TA class, Brent Crews (No. 70 Nitro Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro) captured a checkered flag on an oval track. Crews competed in his first race with Joe Gibbs Racing in the ARCA Menards Series at Phoenix Raceway, where he had a late-rate comeback to score his third-career win in the series. With two previous ARCA victories, both on dirt tracks, Crews win at Phoenix was his first on a pavement track.

New Colors for Joshua Carlson
SGTs Joshua Carlson kicked off the 2025 season with new colors on his No. 36 Enseva/Diercks Ltd/TC Fab Ford Mustang. Carlson secured a new sponsor in Vivid Auto Wraps with Auggi Jimenez in his home state of Iowa and opted for a new blue wrap to pay homage to the Ford Mustangs Detroit roots. It seems to be bringing the team good luck, as Carlson piloted to the win in the SGT class in the season opener at Sebring International Raceway.

Rob Dickey Joins GT1 Challenge
Making his Trans Am debut this weekend is GT1 Challenge competitor Rob Dickey in the No. 64 Forty48 Competition Chevrolet Camaro. Dickey comes to Trans Am from SCCA and SVRA, but has also raced karts, motorcycles and standup Jet Skis. Dickey has dreamed of racing in Trans Am since he was a kid, but that goal became more important to him when a close friend hed shared that dream with passed away. This weekend he finally gets to make his dream a reality.

CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series

Toyota Camry Comes to TA2
This weekend will see the debut of a new manufacturer in the CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series: Toyota. For the past several months, TRD has worked closely with Five Star RaceCar Bodies and Trans Am officials on the design, development and production of the Toyota Camry. The culmination of their hard work will be showcased this weekend, where two Toyota Camrys are set to compete. Toyota Development Driver Tyler Gonzalez will pilot the No. 10 Mobil 1 Camry for Nitro Motorsports, while Sebring winner Thomas Annunziata will debut a GR livery on his No. 90 Nitro Motorsports Camry.

Both Toyota drivers have been busy since the Sebring season opener. Gonzalez won the MX-5 Cup race at St. Petersburg, while Annunziata made a NASCAR Xfinity Series start at Circuit of The Americas with Cope Family Racing in partnership with Nitro Motorsports team owner Nick Tucker.

Jordan Menzin Joins Silver Hare
Silver Hare Racing announced this week that it has signed Jordan Menzin to a part-time schedule in the Pro/Am Challenge this season. Menzin is an accomplished competitor in the World Racing Leagues Supra GT4, as well as driving LMP3s in IMSAs VP Challenge. He made his Trans Am debut in the TA2 season opener at Sebring International Raceway. In his first start for Silver Hare this weekend, Menzin will pilot the No. 5 Silver Hare Racing/Waukegan Farms Chevrolet.

Rob Clifton Returns to TA2
This weekend will see the return of Rob Clifton to CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series competition. Clifton made his debut at Road Atlanta in 2023 and returns to pilot the No. 8 Team SLR-M1 Racecars Chevrolet Camaro. A native of Evans, Ga., Clifton is a former Auburn football player who was recently voted into the Georgia State House of Representatives for his first term during the November election. The second-generation racer has previously competed in Spec Formula Fords in SCCA.

Odrick Debuts New Racecar
Jared Odrick comes to Road Atlanta armed with a brand new M1 Racecars chassis this weekend. The Pro/Am Challenge contender recently took delivery of a new No. 00 Black Underwear Chevrolet Camaro, which will make its Trans Am debut this weekend. Odrick stretched the cars legs at the SCCA Super Tour race at Road Atlanta earlier this month, winning both GT2 races from the pole.

Skeen to Compete Full Time in 2025
Another new M1 Racecars chassis hitting the track this weekend is the No. 2 Guthries Garage Chevrolet Camaro, which will be driven by 2020 CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series champion Mike Skeen for the remainder of the season. Skeen has been tagged by team owner and TA2 competitor Jim Guthrie to take his seat for the remainder of the season while Guthrie recovers from a shoulder injury. After sitting on the pole with a record-breaking time and finishing second in the season opener at Sebring, Skeen is poised to battle for his second title this year. Skeen has four previous victories at Road Atlanta, including a doubleheader sweep in 2020. His most recent victory at the track came in 2022.

Gian Buffomante Hoping to Channel Father at Road Atlanta
Third-generation driver Gian Buffomante is hoping to channel his father, 2016 TA2 champion Tony Buffomante, this weekend when he gets behind the wheel of his No. 95 Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang. The elder Buffomante has two victories at Road Atlanta, standing atop the podium in back-to-back seasons in 2016 and 2017. Gian, who has Tony in his ear when he spots for him on race weekends, considers his father to be his racing hero.

Lovell & Boes Earn Podiums on West Coast
Mia Lovell (No. 40 Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang) and Barry Boes (No. 27 Accio Data/SLR-M1 Chevrolet Camaro) competed in the Western Championship season opener last weekend at Buttonwillow Raceway Park, with both finding success with podiums at the California track. Lovell finished second and Boes finished third in the CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series.

Pro/Am Drivers With Past Road Atlanta Success
There are a few Pro/Am Challenge drivers in this weekends race who have found success at Road Atlanta in other disciplines of racing.

Cale Phillips (No. 99 Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang) has several NASA wins at the track between 2018 and 2020.

Matt Griffin (No. 67 Griffin Concrete Construction Chevrolet Camaro) has won at the track in SCCA. Griffin was the 2024 SCCA SeDIV SARRC champion, as well as the 2024 SCCA CFR GT1 champion.
