Sources: Springer among stars facing arbitration

Published in Baseball
Friday, 10 January 2020 18:11

Several MLB players did not settle with their teams Friday and are expected to go to arbitration hearings, including George Springer, Trevor Story, J.T. Realmuto, Eduardo Rodriguez and Josh Hader, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan.

The biggest arbitration case in terms of both salary and the gap between sides involves Springer, who is asking for $22.5 million while the Houston Astros are offering the outfielder $17.5 million, sources said.

Realmuto and the Philadelphia Phillies, meanwhile, are headed to arbitration over a $2.4 million gap, sources said. The catcher filed at $12.4 million while the Phillies filed at $10 million.

Four Los Angeles Dodgers -- Joc Pederson, Max Muncy, Chris Taylor and Pedro Baez -- are expected to hit arbitration, sources said. Pederson asked for $9.5 million with the Dodgers offering $7.75 million. They offered $4 million to Muncy, who asked for $4.675 million.

The Dodgers haven't been to an arbitration case since 2007 and haven't lost one since 2001.

In addition to left-hander Rodriguez, the Boston Red Sox are also expected to go to arbitration with outfielder Andrew Benintendi.

Source: Twins reward Sano with 3-year extension

Published in Baseball
Friday, 10 January 2020 19:58

Third baseman Miguel Sano is in agreement with the Minnesota Twins on a three-year contract extension, a source familiar with the deal told ESPN's Jeff Passan.

Sources confirmed to ESPN that the extension, which includes a club option for the 2023 season and will buy out two years of free agency, is for $30 million. There is $27 million spread over the first three years and $3 million on a fourth-year option, a source said. If the $14 million option is picked up, the deal maxes out at $41 million over four years. MLB Network was first to report the financial terms of the deal.

Sano, 26, slugged 34 home runs and had 79 RBIs for the Twins in 2019. After getting off to a dreadful start, he finished the season with a .247 average.

Following June 28, Sano batted .279 with a .994 OPS. In the stretch run, Sano was one of the best hitters in baseball.

Sano made $2.65 million last season in his first year of arbitration eligibility. The sides swapped proposed figures in arbitration as placeholders, the player asking for $6.25 million and the team offering $5.1 million.

Minnesota reached one-year deals with outfielder Eddie Rosario ($7.75 million), left-hander Taylor Rogers ($4.45 million), outfielder Byron Buxton ($3,075,000), and right-handers Trevor May ($2,205,000) and Tyler Duffey ($1.2 million).

Right-hander Jose Berrios did not reach an agreement and remained on track for a hearing next month. He asked for a raise from $620,000 to $4.4 million and was offered $4,025,000. The 25-year-old Berrios was selected for his second All-Star team last season and went 14-8 with a 3.68 ERA to lead the rotation for the AL Central champion Twins. He had 195 strikeouts in a career-high 200 1/3 innings and figures to be in line for a long-term contract with a team that's a bit short on starting pitching.

The 28-year-old Rosario, who made $4.91 million last season in his first year of arbitration eligibility, contributed a career-high 32 homers to a Twins team that set the big league season record with 307. He batted .276 with a career-best 109 RBI and had seven assists, the third-most among AL left fielders.

Rogers took over the closer role from Blake Parker, who was released in July, and had 90 strikeouts with only 11 walks in 69 innings. The 29-year-old left-hander had 30 saves with a 2.61 ERA. He made $1,525,000 last season in his first year of arbitration eligibility.

Buxton, who made $1.75 million in 2019 in his first year of arbitration eligibility, was waylaid again by injuries. He had surgery on his left shoulder in September, putting his availability for the start of spring training in question. The 26-year-old has played in more than 92 games only once in five major league seasons. The 2017 Gold Glove winner had a career-best .827 OPS in 2019, batting .262 with 30 doubles and 10 homers in 87 games.

After missing the 2017 season following Tommy John surgery, the 30-year-old May has come back strong as a key cog in the bullpen. He had a 2.94 ERA in 64 1/3 innings with 79 strikeouts in 2019, while opponents batted just .184 against him. The right-hander made $900,000 in 2019 in his first year of arbitration eligibility.

Duffey is a 29-year-old right-hander who had a breakout 2019 season. Duffey had 82 strikeouts in 57 2/3 innings with a 2.50 ERA, earning $562,500. He had a 26-game scoreless streak from July 28 to Sept. 25, with just 11 hits allowed in 23 2/3 innings while the Twins went 20-6 in those games.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Friday, 10 January 2020 12:33

INDIANAPOLIS – Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing Development is making its annual voyage to Tulsa, Okla., for the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals with a strong driver lineup.

SFH Racing Development will welcome back two Chili Bowl veteran team members in Ryan Smith and Kyle O’Gara while also adding Chase Jones, who will be competing in his first Chili Bowl with the team.

“We are excited to start our season once again at Chili Bowl,” SFH Racing Development Co-Owner Wink Hartman said. “The event brings the best of the best and our team has worked hard to make sure we are ready to compete at the highest level.”

This is the eighth straight year SFH Racing Development will contest for a Golden Driller at one of the crown jewel races of midget racing. The 34th annual Chili Bowl is scheduled for Jan. 13-18.

Smith, from Kunkletown, Pa., will rejoin SFH Racing Development for the third year in a row and mark his seventh Chili Bowl appearance. He has a best finish of eighth place was a year ago in the second of two B Mains. Smith will pilot the No. 67S sponsored by Speedway Indoor Karting with associate sponsors Direct Supply and 1911 Grill.

“We have a lot of confidence in Ryan and what he brings to our team,” team co-owner Sarah Fisher said. “He had a great season in 19 and we are hoping to get him the little bit he needs to push into the A Main this year.”

Smith spent the season competing for Heffner Racing Enterprises. In 65 races he had three wins, 30 top-five finishes and 42 top-10 finishes.

Jones, from Greenwood, Ind., is making his first Chili Bowl start for the SFH Racing Development team, but is no stranger to the event or the team. This will be his fourth attempt at a Golden Driller.

He ran multiple events with the team this year, taking a win at a regional midget race at Bloomington Speedway. In 17 races in 2019, Jones had two wins and four podium finishes.

For Chili Bowl he is bringing a well-known race sponsor on board the No. 67J with Speedtown Comfort Heating and Cooling.

“We support racers because racers support us,” Speedtown Comfort Heating and Cooling owner Jerry Wilson said.

For the eighth straight year, O’Gara, from Indianapolis, will wheel a SFH Racing Development midget in a quest for a Golden Driller. O’Gara will behind the wheel of the No. 67O sponsored by Speedway Customs with associate sponsors Hartman Oil and Direct Supply.

“Chili Bowl is a great place to gauge the strength of a team,” O’Gara said. “We’ve developed a solid team over the last year or so and put in a lot of work to get us to the next level and I think that will show this week.”

O’Gara goes into Chili Bowl off of a season in multiple types of cars on multiple surfaces. He finished second in the Auto Value Bumper to Bumper Super Sprint Pavement Non-Wing Series and also competed in Silver Crown and USAC Races.

Kaulig Racing & Haley To Attempt Daytona 500

Published in Racing
Friday, 10 January 2020 12:41

LEXINGTON, N.C. – Defending Coke Zero Sugar 400 winner Justin Haley and Kaulig Racing will attempt to qualify for the Daytona 500 next month at Daytona Int’l Speedway.

Haley will drive the No. 16 Fraternal Order of Eagles Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE in Kaulig Racing’s NASCAR Cup Series debut.

Kaulig Racing, who recently announced the team will be fielding three entries in the NASCAR Xfinity Series season opener at Daytona Int’l Speedway with Justin Haley, Ross Chastain, and A.J. Allmendinger, is thrilled to have the opportunity to attempt the Daytona 500 at Daytona Int’l Speedway.

”I am super excited to attempt not only our first NASCAR Cup Series race, but our first Daytona 500,” said team owner Matt Kaulig. “To be competing at the World Center of Racing on the main stage is incredible, especially for our team that began just four years ago. I have all the confidence in the world that Justin Haley will make everyone at Kaulig Racing proud and truly let everyone know that Kaulig Racing is here to compete.”

In the series’ most recent visit to Daytona Beach last July, Haley shocked the racing world by winning the rain-shortened Coke Zero Sugar 400.

“I am eager to try and qualify for the Daytona 500,” said Haley. “It is an honor for me to compete for a starting spot in Kaulig Racing’s first NASCAR Cup Series race. The F.O.E. has been with me since 2016. The Eagles were on my car when I won in July at Daytona, so it’s a great fit for them to be back on my car as we try to lock ourselves into the Daytona 500.”

The Fraternal Order of Eagles, an international non-profit organization, is a family of nearly 700,000 members throughout North America, dedicated to raising money for charity through a variety of social events. Unlike other nonprofit organizations, 100 percent of the $10 million raised by Eagles each year goes directly to the individuals and communities who need it most.

“We couldn’t be happier to partner with Justin and Kaulig Racing in their Daytona 500 effort,” said F.O.E. Grand Worthy President Ron Malz. “Last year’s win at Daytona was the highlight of our 15-plus years in NASCAR and our members are excited for a chance to replicate that feat in the sport’s signature race.”

During his Xfinity Series rookie season last yaer, Haley recorded 20 top 10s and four top fives, including a runner-up finish last July at Daytona. The season also marked the team’s best overall effort since its inception in 2016.

“Kaulig Racing has made continuous strides to be competitive in the Xfinity Series in the past few years,” said Kaulig Racing President Chris Rice. “In 2018, we fielded two cars at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Then in 2019, we not only fielded two cars for multiple races, but we added a third entry at Daytona in July and got our first win with Ross Chastain. As we continue to grow, I feel it is time to go to Daytona and compete in the Cup Series.”

Hall Leads First Day Of Daytona ARCA Testing

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – On a day that started off delayed due to a wet track surface, the ARCA Menards Series open test at Daytona Int’l Speedway was also cut short Friday afternoon by inclement weather.

Connor Hall, in the No. 22C Chad Bryant Racing Ford, had just moved to the top of the leaderboard as a group of drivers had started to work the draft, raising speeds above 180 mph.

Hall’s fast lap of 49.711 seconds at 181.046 mph just narrowly nipped Ronnie Osmer’s fastest lap. Osmer timed in with a lap at 49.754 seconds at 180.890 mph, just .043 seconds off Hall’s fastest lap.

“We were working on single car runs this morning,” Hall said. “We had a game plan to work on the car and getting air where we wanted it. We made some gains and learned some things we liked and didn’t like. That’s what testing is all about. We were focused on what we needed to be better on last year. We have a great racecar. We are happy but not totally happy so we’ll get back to work tomorrow.”

Chad Bryant Racing’s Jacob Haefner was third at 49.767 seconds at 180.843 mph.

“It was a learning curve atthe beginning,” Haefner said. “I calmed myself down and got to driving. It is a big change coming from late models on short tracks. We worked a little on single car runs and then got out there in the draft a little. We’re learning a lot and ready to come back in February.”

Ty Gibbs was fourth quick at 49.772 seconds at 180.825 mph and Andy Suess rounded out the top five at 49.828 seconds at 180.621 mph.

Others that teamed up to work the draft and exceed 180 miles per hour included Gus Dean (No. 32 Win Tron Racing Chevrolet), Riley Herbst (No. 18H Joe Gibbs Racing Chevrolet), Dominique Van Wieringen (No. 30D Rette Jones Racing Ford), and her brother Tristan Van Wieringen (No. 30T Rette Jones Racing Ford). Bret Holmes (No. 23 Bret Holmes Racing Chevrolet) rounded out the top ten.

Thirty-seven drivers took time of the 50 that have registered. No incidents were reported throughout the day.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Rick Mears and NASCAR Gander Outdoors & RV Truck Series champion Mike Bliss headline the 10 finalists for election into the West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame.

Mears and Bliss are among nine, multi-time nominees to emerge from the Hall’s first round of voting that ended Dec. 31. Only two first-time nominees – Craig Keough and Jerry Pitts – transferred onto the final ballot.

Previous nominees advancing to the final vote are Mears, Bliss, Ernie Cope, Tom Gloy, Tommy Kendall, Jim Pettit II, Greg Pickett and Tom Sneva.

Final voting by the Hall’s board of directors continues through Jan. 31. to select the five 2020 inductees, whose identities will be announced during the February 28-March 1 NASCAR Cup Series Auto Club 400 weekend at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif.

Five Heritage candidates from racing’s historic era also will be inducted in the Class of 2020. Their selection will be announced later this spring.

The Class of 2020 will be enshrined June 11 at the Meritage Resort and Spa in Napa, Calif. The event, presented by World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway, again accompanies the annual NASCAR Cup Series and ARCA Menards Series West weekend at nearby Sonoma Raceway.

“We’re proud to announce that the Round 1 voting was the closest since the Hall’s inception with just a few votes separating the first and 11th finalists,” said Ken Clapp, Chairman and CEO of the West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame. ”Each of the 11 was supported by a majority of the votes cast.

“The 2020 class will be among the most diverse in terms of motorsport disciplines – from weekly racing to national and international stardom. Choosing just five will be extremely difficult.”

Pavelski says return to San Jose will be 'awkward'

Published in Hockey
Friday, 10 January 2020 12:29

SAN JOSE -- Joe Pavelski admits it's going to be awkward. There's no other way for him to feel as he returns to San Jose as a member of the Dallas Stars, months after his hopes of remaining with the Sharks were dashed.

"I always had a feeling that something would probably work out. Until it didn't, I didn't have any reason to think it wouldn't," said Pavelski, the former San Jose captain who signed a three-year, $21 million deal with Dallas after the Sharks let him walk into free agency.

Pavelski, 35, was drafted by the Sharks in 2003 and played 963 games for San Jose from 2006 to 2019. He was an immensely popular player locally, especially for his sacrificial play in the playoffs, where he had 100 points in 134 games.

He said it'll be odd to watch from the visiting bench as the home team skates through a smoking shark's head to start the game. "I think it'll be weird. Probably seeing the jersey will be the hardest part. It'll be awkward in a lot of ways," he said.

Pavelski's current team and former team are headed in opposite directions. The Stars are second in the Central Division with 56 points in 44 games, having won six in a row. The Sharks are third from the bottom in the Western Conference with 44 points in 46 games, and are 4-4-2 in their past 10 games.

The Sharks and Pavelski were in the Western Conference finals last season, a postseason that saw him become an inspirational leader after coming back from a concussion in Game 7 of the opening round against Vegas. He's stunned by San Jose's tumble in the standings, which led to the dismissal of coach Peter DeBoer last month.

"I am. It's a situation that you can never predict, especially in the NHL right now. You always think you have it figured out. Tough start, and they claw their way back and they stumble again," he said.

"I am surprised they're struggling a little bit. I would have thought they'd be a little bit more successful this year. But that's just the way it goes. There are just teams like that."

The Stars and Sharks are scheduled to face off at 10:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. PT (ESPN+) on Saturday night. Pavelski will be honored at the game for his time in San Jose, and injured captain Logan Couture let it slip on Twitter that a Rolex watch will be part of it.

"The hockey's always the easiest part. The toughest part of the transition was leaving the relationships that we had here," Pavelski said. "I was definitely excited to get back here and see all the faces."

A teenage amateur is looking to crash the pros’ party this weekend at the European Tour's South African Open.

Jayden Trey Schaper, an 18-year-old from Benoni, South Africa, is just one shot off the lead after 36 holes at Randpark Golf Club in Johannesburg.

Schaper caught fire on the back nine, making five birdies in a six-hole stretch beginning at No. 11, and finished with a second-round, 4-under 67 to move to 10 under on the leaderboard, where he is only behind leader Tapio Pulkkanen of Finland.

The last amateur winner of the South African Open was Denis Hutchinson in 1959.

“We're all here to try and win, but my goal is just to go out and take things one shot at a time and see what happens,” Schaper told reporters on Thursday.

Schaper is ranked 85th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and last month played in his second Junior Presidents Cup. He also won the AJGA Junior Players and South African Stroke Play Amateur last year.

“Jayden's got this wonderful ball flight off the tee with a little cut,” said Louis Oosthuizen, Schaper's golf idol who played with the teenager during the first two rounds. “A lot of the guys hit high draws for more distance, but what Jayden has is pure class. We'll be seeing him right at the top in the future.”

Oosthuizen is two shots behind Schaper in a tie for 11th, part of a group that also includes fellow South Africans Branden Grace and George Coeztee.

Recent UNLV grad and GB&I Walker Cupper Harry Hall is in a four-way tie for seventh at 9 under while Schaper is joined by four other players at 10 under, including former Florida standout Sam Horsfield, who fired a bogey-free 68 on Friday.

Pulkkanen has made just one bogey through 36 holes.

In the span of two days, Justin Thomas has gone from favorite to likely off the board.

Thomas entered this week’s Sony Open as the clear betting favorite to win at Waialae Country Club, but rounds of 72-71 will probably lead to an early exit in Honolulu.

"I mean, played like crap so I deserve to have a weekend off," Thomas told reporters after Friday's round.

Thomas' 3-over performance was surprising, especially considering Thomas’ current form and past Sony record. Last Sunday, Thomas outlasted Patrick Reed and Xander Schauffele in a playoff to win the Sentry Tournament of Champions at Kapalua, and in 2017, Thomas shot 59 in the opening round before winning at Waialae, where he also has posted finishes of T-16 or better in each of the past two editions.

"Playing plenty good enough to still be winning this week," Thomas said. "Probably was a little exhausted from last week."

Thomas’ missed cut would be his first since last summer’s U.S. Open and just his third since the beginning of the 2017-18 PGA Tour season.

In windy conditions at Waialae, Thomas struck the ball decently well, even leading the field in strokes gained: off-the-tee on Thursday. However, his short game and putting let him down majorly, as Thomas needed 66 putts in two rounds and ranked near the bottom of the field in strokes-gained categories both on and around the greens.

Thomas’ second-round 71 included four birdies, though three of them came on his final five holes. Thomas also recorded two doubles.

"Just didn't execute," Thomas said. "I mean, it's really, really tough out there. But I played fine. I played plenty good enough to be at 4 or 5 under and right in contention. I missed about every putt. I think honestly playing in course as often as I have in the past hurt me this year because it's just so weird the greens being as soft as they are, especially out of the rough when the ball flies as much as it does. So much top-spin and it's still coming back, so sometimes you have to get adjusted to that. But everybody has to; it's not just me.

"Yeah, just was a rough couple days."
